Chapter 18
They lost track of all scent after their breather so opted to settle down for the night and resume in the same direction tomorrow. Only change they made was to settle nearby a stream, not directly next to it however, since it would be a magnet for all sorts of creatures seeking its refreshing liquid. Inuyasha had been insistent to find another source of water since this one was surrounded with a very potent smelling flower, but a few 'sit's changed his tune quickly. They were just too tired to find a second waterway tonight. It even had an abundance of fish that the group was eager to take advantage off.
Sitting around the campfire roasting several large fish, Miroku was deep in thought, 'Something about this day feels fabricated. First we are led in a single direction till exhaustion took hold, as if we are being lured towards something. Then, when we do finally stop, we find this perfect stream with more fish than we'll be able to eat. It's a little too conveinient.' "I think we might be walking into a trap," Miroku spoke up, shocking the rest of them.
"A trap?" Inuyasha barked, baring his fangs at the idea.
"Do you think it has something to do with Kohaku?" Sango worried.
"So far," Miroku began, "Kohaku may only be a means to lure us to wherever Naraku wants us." He paused looking directly at Kagome, making her a bit nervous, even though she knew nothing. "I think he's using Kagome's power to sense the jewel shard to make us follow them somewhere."
"But, what can we do?" Sango asked pained. "I can't just ignore when Kohaku is near; I have to save him from Naraku's grasp."
"I'm not suggesting we do not follow, simply that we be wary of what we will find," Miroku clarified. "Then there's also this stream-"
"I knew there was something wrong with this place," Inuyasha responded swiftly, "lets go."
"Hold on, Inuyasha!" Miroku spoke a little firmer. "I do not sense any danger or ploy here, it just felt a little too convenient. It doesn't feel like something the Naraku we know would concoct. What good would it serve him to drag us to a location that lets us replenish our strength?"
'That's because you don't really know him,' Kagome thought to herself, mostly just listening in on the discussion. 'I wonder if he did show us to this stream.'
Gathering up her bathing supplies, empty water bottles, and her spare school uniform, Kagome called to Sango, "Want to go take a bath, Sango?"
"No, thanks," she replied, scrubbing away on Hiraikotsu. It was a hard job maintaining the gargantuan weapon. "I still feel pretty clean from the hot springs yesterday."
"Be quick about it," Inuyasha snapped as she walked off to the stream. He didn't want to admit his weakness, but these flowers really irritated his nose and keeping tabs on her via scent was pretty much out of the question. They were just too potent and he could barely keep his pack's individual scents differentiated this far from the stream as it was. He would have to rely on hearing until they moved on, which wasn't as reliable as his sense of smell.
"I'll take as long as I want, Inuyasha," Kagome huffed. 'Really, who does he think he is ordering me around like that?' She stomped off to go refill the water bottles, wash her current attire, and bathe herself. A little solitude would be nice, give her mind time to unwind from the flurry of events.
Just as she made it to the banks of the stream, the dwindling sunlight reflected off the water directly into her eyes. It was like walking out of a dark tunnel and into the blinding daylight. Squinting her eyes to adjust to the change of brightness, she saw the abundant flowers fluttering in the breeze. "Ah, its so beautiful!" She knelt at the edge of the stream and began filling the water bottles, humming to herself and inhaling the fragrance that surrounded her. It was just so tranquil and peaceful. Rising to her feet and screwing on the last cap, she turned around to set the bottles aside in favor of her next task, but nearly dropped them out of shock, for standing right in front of her was Naraku. His scent, aura, and even the jewel shards were hidden from the world by his shimmering, purple barrier. She opened her mouth to speak, then snapped it shut, casting a glance in the direction of her friends at camp. He held a hand out, beckoning her closer. She walked closer, but stopped at the barrier, unsure if it would stop her or not. Tentatively reaching out, her fingers slipped through as if it was nothing, emboldening her to step through and within arms reach. A tentacle slipped out and removed the water bottles from her arms, setting them down with her other belongings and freeing up her arms to embrace him, which she did enthusiastically.
"There is something I wish to show you," he spoke, not trying to be quiet. The volume made Kagome flinch and look towards camp again. "You needn't worry, this barrier is soundproof."
Kagome let out a breath she'd been holding and smiled, "What do you want to show me?" She was excited.
"First," he started as he plucked a hair from her head and then his own, "we need to make sure your absence," he pulled a wooden doll from his sleeve, "is not detected." Kagome watched transfixed as he worked, winding the hair around the doll before tossing it next to the stream. Kagome gasped when a demon puppet sprouted that looked exactly like her. It sat peacefully on the bank, dangling its legs in the water, humming absentmindedly.
"Wouldn't my friends be able to tell that that is not me?" she asked with uncertainty, still rubbing the place where he plucked a hair.
"Have you not learned to trust my foresight yet? These flowers render scent tracking useless, and the puppet has no demonic aura either," he answered, picking her up bridal style and making her gasp at the sudden action. He needed to make haste, before her companions became suspicious; they had much to do. Kagome quickly wrapped her arms around his neck to stabilize herself as he leapt into the air, flying in the same direction he had been leading them throughout the day. Kagome's stomach lurched, like it would on a roller coaster, but settled when his speed evened out as it does when riding in a car. The barrier also blocked out most of the wind, letting just a gentle breeze to rustle her hair. It was surprisingly gentle, but then all she had to compare it to was Inuyasha's chaotic up and down and the intense wind associated with Kirara's speed.
Kagome had been thinking on his words and realized Miroku had most likely been very accurate, "So, you did intend for us to stop at this stream, didn't you?"
"Of course, however, all the waterways in the vicinity have those same demonic flowers. Any one of them would have held the same results," Naraku informed with a sly grin. Kagome noted with astonishment, just how much effort had gone into his plan, and all to get her alone. Little did she know, she had barely scratched the surface, his schemes were never so segmented and singular. This was only one step in a much larger machination.
In her ignorance, Kagome looked up, flattered by the amount of time he spent in order to be with her. Heat radiated off of his masculine frame as they effortlessly flew through the twilight sky. She found herself staring at his lips and wanting to feel them against hers. Her body shifted minutely, arching up closer, before settling back into his hold as pink colored her cheeks. She wasn't sure how to go about it, unsure if he was in a receptive mood or not and too embarrassed and naïve to attempt anything. Instead, she squirmed in his hold, trying to build up her courage to do something, anything, and failing pathetically.
Naraku noticed her fidgety unease and easily figured out what was causing it by the shy, sideways glances she was giving him and wetting her lips. He found it amusing that last night she had the audacity and confidence to mount him, an act that many demons would consider an insulting attempt to establish dominance, but now she's even too shy to ask for a kiss. Her innocent nature and peculiar tendencies were certainly persistent, considering the amount of perversion he exposed her to the previous night. He figured now would be the only opportunity to indulge, for once they arrived at their destination it would be highly unlikely she would still be in such an amorous mood.
"You act as if there is something you want of me," he teased mercilessly, making her cheeks flush.
"Umm, well, kinda, I guess," she stammered quietly, not looking at his gleaming eyes.
"If you do not act on your desires, you will be left wanting," he informed shrewdly, a grin pulling at the corners of his lips.
'I'm not completely sure, but that sounded like an invitation,' Kagome wracked her flustered brain trying to determine an opening. He looked down at her, and somehow, she understood his gaze as permission. She pulled herself up, tilting her head to the side and angling her lips against his all before she could overthink it. This is what she wanted, to be close to him again. She started gentle but he did not let it remain so, urging her mouth open with a fevered hunger. He had no need to dose her with his alluring miasma; her genuine lust for him was proving to be a far stronger drug anyways. The memories of last night flooded back at the petal softness of her lips and gentle hands intertwined in his hair. It would be all too easy to forgo his duplicitous plans and simply let his libido take over his actions, except that it would take several weeks or so to set up this same scene anew. There would be many more opportunities to indulge in her womanly assets at later times.
Without warning, a familiar twinge of power sparked across Kagome's senses and made her gasp into Naraku's mouth. 'A jewel shard, and it's not his that I'm sensing either. Is that why he brought me, to have me help him find it? What do I do?' she worried, the scent of her anxiety thickening and breaking the mood of the kiss.
Naraku noticed the instant her senses picked up on the shard as well as the discomfort associated with that discovery. Pulling away to see her face, he saw she obviously didn't want to let on to what she knew since the jewel was one of the main areas of contest between the two. "You needn't hide you knowledge of a nearby jewel shard, for I already know the exact being in possession of it," he spoke emotionlessly but the words eased her mind slightly, seeing as she didn't have to try and lie. "In fact, I intend to collect it tonight." A sinister smile spread across his lips speaking of how he was looking forward to its acquisition.
"So, you're still after the shards?" she noted disappointedly.
"As are you, there are still many scattered about," Naraku reminded.
"You're not planning on using me to help, are you?" Kagome asked, defiance sparking in her aura. He took note of her emphasis on being used, identifying it as an obvious sore spot.
"Unlike Inuyasha, I am fully capable of scouting out the Shikon on my own, without the use of a shard detector," he watched her carefully, gauging reactions and acquiring knowledge about her deeply hidden insecurities. There it was, she flinched at the degrading title of shard detector. On the outside, he remained neutral, but inside, triumph; he had found a weakness, a whole in the wall she erected around her injured heart. He would take every advantage he could find. "I will not use you in such a crude manner."
Kagome's eyes widened at his promising declaration. For so long, she had been made to feel that that was her best, if not only, redeeming quality. Kouga only took interest because of that ability, hoping to gain more power for himself, and Inuyasha had bluntly stated, on multiple occasions, that her only use was finding the shards since she was too weak to fight. Yet Naraku, another demon after the Shikon shards, had interest in her beyond the jewel and wasn't using her for its completion? He never even made a move for her shards, even though he had plenty of opportunity. It was mind-blowing and she couldn't help but ask, "W-what about when all that are left are mine and yours?"
"You will give them to me of your own will," she gripped the jar in her pocket tighter, suddenly feeling a bit threatened.
"And if I don't?" she challenged.
"You will not be able to resist," he answered cryptically. 'For by that time, you will have no one but me. The fear of being alone will drive you to comply with anything I request. I will attain the complete, tainted jewel, and you will help me, but not in the way you have become accustomed to being used, I assure you.'
Kagome just glared at him, annoyed with his overconfidence. She knew she'd never just hand it over. He'd bring destruction… or would he? She never really stopped to ask why he wanted it. "Why do you want it anyways?" Kagome asked aloud, trying to alleviate her constant curiosity.
He stared at her for a tense while before forming an answer, "Power." His face remained blank, no sign of any anticipation for such an end. "And for what reason do you collect the shards?"
'That wasn't much of an answer,' Kagome noted deflatedly. 'Power, for what purpose?' His answer seemed partial or fabricated, as if he wasn't really looking forward to it or it was just a front he put up. She was able to recognize the standoffish way he stated it, however; he would not be elaborating any further today. She debated on giving a similar, curt answer, 'duty,' but decided that if she wanted him to open up to her, she'd have to do the same. 'One of us has to give in first.' She took a large breath to prepare for the story, "I was born with the jewel inside my body, until that centipede demon ripped it out. Kaede then told me I had to protect it and that only a pure wish could destroy it forever." She paused, reluctant to revisit the next part. "It got shattered when Inuyasha and I were trying to retrieve it from a demon. A crow had snatched it and flew away, my arrows couldn't fly high enough to hit it." Her voice was low, "I tied its severed foot to an arrow, since the foot was trying to get back to the body. I figured it would help my arrow reach it, but… it ended up shattering the jewel. I... sh-shattered the j-jewel." Her bangs covered her eyes and she flinched hard as Naraku let out a bellowing laugh. He couldn't help but find it terribly ironic and amusing, that the powerful miko in his arms, who injured him so, was unable to take care of a simple crow demon. The jewel was shattered by the very one who was supposed to protect it. His laughter ceased instantly when a whimper sounded from the girl.
Examining her pained features and sullen aura, he understood, "I see, you have been made to feel shame for this fact, by Inuyasha I presume." It seemed most of her insecurities were caused by the crass mongrel. All the better for him since the more emotional scars she has, the easier she will be to manipulate. Kagome is shocked. Does he not judge her for it? Everyone has blamed her for her attempt to help, she only assumed he would do the same. True to his assumptions, she looked up at him with astonished confusion shining in her innocent eyes. Her heart had been uncovered, laid bare for him to either crush or repair in this moment. The closer he got to her, the more she began to trust him with her deepest secrets and most painful memories, and thus, the more anguish he could thrust upon her later. She would never see his betrayal coming. "What would have been the alternative, if you had not shot the crow?"
Kagome startled back, no one had ever taken the time to ask her why she did it, only blamed the outcome on her. "It would have eaten a small boy," she all but whispered, still scared he would hold the same opinion of her everyone else had. "And probably gone on to eat more people…"
"Then, do you regret your attempt to make a difference?" he summarized, knowing he had her fully ensnared at this point.
"No," she answered now without hesitation and a smile on her face. "In hindsight, it may not have been the best course of action, but it did save the boy. I would feel even worse if I had done nothing." Kagome was radiant, her soul a little more at ease with Naraku's unexpected assistance. She snuggled in closer to his chest, feeling strangely safe, not just in the physical sense, but mentally, emotionally. She was beginning to trust him with all that she was, a feeling she'd never known before.
"You will have a chance to make a difference once again," he informed, his emotionless gaze fixed on something in front of them.
Looking out over the horizon, Kagome gasped aloud at a column of smoke rising against the dimmed sky, fueled by a brightly burning fire. The smoke was too thick to see what was on fire. Naraku touched down on the precipice of a spire and Kagome squirmed out of his grasp to get a better look, "What is it? Do some people need help down there?" Her voice turned suddenly frantic with worry.
"Not there," he informed, "there are none left alive in that village." A choked sob left her throat at this news and she briefly wondered if he was responsible but kept quiet. He turned to the left, looking down at an army encampment not far from them.
She followed his gaze, trying to understand, "Are they the ones who attacked the village?"
His malicious smirk widened, "Yes, and they took something from that village that I think would interest you greatly. Would you like a closer look?"
Kagome noted the jewel shard was in the direction of their camp, 'Is that what they took?' "Yes," she answered, having no idea the full extent of what she was about to see.
