A/N: I know, I know. It has been forever, but life has been crazy sine Christmas. First there was the tornado December 26th in Texas, which is where my house is. We haven't been living in it, but we were couting on selling it to buy a new house and we were actually less than a mile away from where it started it's 13 mile path of destruction across Rowlett. I had to spend like 10 hours a day for two weeks cleaning up our house, which has no ceilings at the moment and aparently had been housing some nasty squatters, as well as removing mountains of debris from the yard and cutting down trees, and aranging for repairs. We were lucky to only need a new roof, windows and fence, as the house right behind ours was taken down clean to the foundation. Then the cleaning process left me with horrible tendonitis in my right wrist that is still flaring up if I push it too hard. On top of that we've been looking to get out of this crappy rental house we are in and I probably don't have to tell anyone how horrible and stressful the process of finding and buying a house can be and then getting ready to move. But I have been working on my fics, and have definitely not abandoned them. I hope this chapter will be the return to regular updates. I intend for it to, barring other natural disasters and the like. To anyone still with me, thanks for your patience and understanding and I hope you enjoy.
Kagome was still sad and angry, but feeling much better as she lay curled up against InuYasha. Apparently a hot bath and several orgasms had been just what she needed to help her relax and ease her troubled heart after what had happened today.
“Shit,” InuYasha said suddenly.
“What’s wrong?” she asked pressing her lips against the hollow of his throat.
“The friend I called about doing the sketches, is going to be calling any minute, and since it’s going to be a video call, we both need to put something on,” he replied.
“Oh,” she said quietly, her stomach feeling a little sick as she thought about how that meant she was going to have to talk about that horrible man who had attacked her. “I guess I can wear one of the hotel robes.”
“Damn, I’m really off my game today,” he said as he sat up. “First I almost get you killed and then I didn’t even think about the fact that you don’t even have any clothes or how it you might like a little time to get over the shock.”
She laid a hand on his back. “Hey, we already decided that neither one of us is to blame. I don’t blame you. How could I when you’ve been doing your best to protect me, and even lost your home in the process? If anyone should be angry, it should be you, for all the trouble I brought into your life.”
home
He looked at her. “What life? I wasn’t living. I was hiding, feeling sorry for myself.”
“Even so, it was where you lived with your mother,” she offered. “You said it yourself that you had good memories there.”
“Keh, it was just a place,” he told her. “I still have all those memories and I considered it more than an even trade if that was what it took for me to get to meet you. Now, if you didn’t want to wear the robe you could always wear my shirt instead. I do like the idea of seeing you in my clothes.”
She rolled her eyes a little but smiled too. “Then your shirt it is.”
He got out of bed and quickly put on his underwear and slacks before tossing her his shirt. She pulled on over her head just as his cell phone started to ring. He grabbed it off the table and looked at the screen before accepting the call.
The voice that came on the line was somehow familiar. “Hey dog boy. Man this must really be important since I haven’t heard from you in ages.”
“Yeah, Inu-onii chan, you’ve been a bad dog, not calling us for so long,” a female voice added.
“You didn’t even call to tell us what you thought of the album,” another young woman chimed in.
Kagome’s brow furrowed and then she gasped. “Is that them? Kitsune Bi? Your sketch artist is one of them?”
“Unfortunately, Shippou here, is both the most annoying brat and the best artist I know,” InuYasha replied as he came to sat beside her.
Her eyes widened at the three faces that were all trying to squeeze into the picture together Clearly the handsome young man with the red hair and green eyes was Shippou the kitsune. “Hello,” she offered tentatively.
“From left to right. Shiori, Shippou, and Souten,” InuYasha introduced. “Guys this is Kagome.”
“Whoa, you do not deserve that,” Shippou said.
“Don’t I know it,” InuYasha agreed.
Kagome slapped his arm. “Don’t say that. You deserve to be happy just like anyone else. Besides it not about what you deserve. I mean does he really deserve not one beautiful girlfriend, but two? I doubt it.”
Souten and Shiori both laughed and the latter said, “Oh, I like her already nii-chan.”
“Me too,” Souten said.
Shippou scowled a little and nudged them both to the side. “So you said it was an emergency. You’d better not have just wanted to show off because our manager wasn’t happy when I told him we were going to be late to our own release party.”
InuYasha snorted. “Does that sound like me?”
“Yes!” the three said as one.
Kagome covered her mouth in an attempt to muffle her own laughter as InuYasha flashed her a halfhearted glare. She knew he wasn’t really upset with her.
“Well, it’s not why I called in any case,” he told them. “I need to you do a few sketches for me. There’s a group of mercs in town that work for the bastard who has been stalking my woman. Three of them went after her again and two people died. I need to get the word out and as much as it pains me to say this, you’re the best.”
“How bad are we talking?” Shippou asked.
“One of the worst I’ve ever seen,” InuYasha replied. “This asshole has serious resources and reach. He’s bought I don’t know how many cops, but enough that even murders are going uninvestigated.”
“I’ll get your things,” Shiori said quietly, disappearing from view.
Kagome slipped her hand into InuYasha’s out of the view of the camera as the time came to describe the men she’d seen. Thankfully InuYasha was able to do most of the talking when it came to the two men that had been waiting outside as they quickly came to the conclusion that they were same two he’d seen at the motel. It also helped to give her an idea of what kind of things she’d need to say when describing the one she’d kicked in the face.
“Oh! Don’t forget the purple marking on his forehead, like a four pointed star or something,” Kagome said. “It was hidden a little by his bangs, but there was definitely some sort of tattoo or something there.”
“Shit, that’s right,” InuYasha said. “And the girly one had these darts from his eyes down over his cheeks kind of purple but darker than the other one’s.”
“Okay, here’s what I’ve got,” Shippou said. He turned the camera towards the two drawings. “Tell me if you see anything I need to adjust.”
“Wow,” Kagome breathed. “I hate the subject, but those are really amazing. It almost looks like a photo. It’s not fair that you have two amazing talents.”
“Who says I only have two,” Shippou teased with a grin as he looked into the camera once more. “So, we’re satisfied with those?”
“Yeah, you got those bastards down perfectly,” InuYasha replied. “It’s up to you now, beautiful. I didn’t get a look at the other guy.”
Kagome swallowed hard and nodded, squeezing his hand a little. She closed her eyes and tried to picture his face in her mind. Her stomach was in knots and she shivered as she could practically feel his hands pawing at her. She didn’t even like to think about what he might have done to her, but whenever she thought about him, she couldn’t help but to do just that. Then suddenly he was there, his nose in her hair as he nuzzled her.
“You can do this,” he said quietly. “I’m right here.”
A soft almost purr rumbled from him. It washed over her, sliding across her skin and then sinking inside her, calming her turbulent emotions and making her feel safe and strong, loved and protected. It was the strangest and most wonderful feeling though she had no idea how it was possible or even what exactly he was doing to her, she was grateful for it. She didn’t open her eyes as she started talking, so she didn’t notice the looks of shock on the faces of Shippou and the two women.
“Oi, you gonna draw or what?” InuYasha asked quietly while somehow maintaining that gentle sort of growl.
She described him in as much detail as she could, making corrections each time they took a pause so that he could show her what he had so far. It really was incredible to her that someone could draw so accurately just based on what she was saying when she wouldn’t have been draw something recognizable if she was tracing it.
“And he had red around his eyes and going down on both sides of his chin, all the way down onto his neck,” she finished.
Shippou worked for a another few minutes and then held up his sketch for the camera. “Is this good?”
Kagome shuddered a little and nodded. “That’s him.”
“Ugly bastard,” InuYasha said with a growl. “He probably did look better after you kicked him in the face.”
Kagome managed a weak laugh as she hugged him. “Thank you for whatever it was you were doing to help me and for that, but would you think I was crazy if I wanted another bath? Just thinking about him and how he grabbed me really makes me feel like I need another one.”
He pressed his lips to her forehead. “Nah, go ahead. I’ll finish up with Shippou.”
“Thank you,” she said again as she slipped away from him and then disappeared into the bathroom.
InuYasha sighed as he returned his attention to his phone to find three faces once more and all of them a little irritated. It was to be expected really, but that didn’t mean he wanted to listen to them bitch at him. Well, he sure as hell wasn’t going to start the conversation so he just sat there silently while he braced himself.
“Oh, Inu-onii-chan, is there maybe something you forgot to tell us?” Souten asked. “Like how she’s not just a woman you are protecting, or even just a woman you’re dating.”
“Keh, what of it?” he replied. “You three were almost as bad as the Monk and Sango bitchin’ at me about getting over Kikyou and moving on instead of hiding out in the mountains. Well, I’ve moved on so shouldn’t you be happy instead of giving me shit about it?”
“I think onii-chan that the problem is that you didn’t tell us we had a reason to be happy in the first place,” Shiori told him. “We’d never have not helped but if you’d told us who she was, we would have rescheduled and come in person.”
“Then it’s better I didn’t,” he said seriously. “I don’t want you three anywhere near this bastard or the assholes who work for him. It’s too big a risk and Kagome would never forgive me if I did something to hold back the career of her new favorite band.”
“Does that mean you let her listen to the cd and she actually liked it?” Shippou asked.
“She more than liked it and so did I,” InuYasha replied.
“In that case you can definitely keep her,” Souten said. “You need a woman of good taste in your life nii-chan.”
“She makes you happy,” Shiori said quietly.
He nodded. “Yeah she does and then some. Shit, I should let you guys go. I fully expect a big return on my investment. Once this shit is all settled we’ll get together and you can see just how amazing she is for yourselves.”
“We’ll hold you to that, dog boy,” Shippou told him. “I’ll scan these and send them to your email first chance I get. Oh and don’t do anything stupid like getting yourself killed.”
“I won’t, especially not now,” InuYasha said.
He ended the call and set his phone on the bed beside him with a sigh. No matter what Kagome said a part of him was always going to feel guilty for not being there for her today and for his most likely being the reason they were able to find her in the first place. It was the same sort of guilt he still carried for not having protected his mother, even though he’d been a kid at the time and even though she hadn’t even known the bastard who had killed her. He never could have anticipated it and still so many years later he felt like he should have been able to do something.
He forced those thoughts aside. Kagome was alive. She’d protected herself, and escaped and instead of thinking about the past, he just needed to make sure nothing like today ever happened again. He got up and headed for the bathroom to see if she was really alright. Whoever this asshole was that had dared to lay his hands on her was going to live to regret it before he sent him to hell.
He knocked lightly and then opened the door to find her in the water, knees drawn up, resting her head upon them. She wasn’t crying, which was a relief but he could tell that she was at least a little shaken up still. Not that be blamed her. Kneeling by the tub he reached out smoothed his hand along her hair.
“I’m know I’m being a big baby,” she said quietly. “He didn’t even really hurt me. I just, I think about the way his hands felt, the way he looked at me…” She paused as she shuddered. “It could have been so much worse, but it’s like I can still feel him.”
“You’re not being a baby,” he told her. “It completely normal to be freaked out by what happened, but remember you took care of that bastard all on your own.”
“I did, didn’t I,” she said with a soft smile. “Though I had good teachers too. I know you think you failed me somehow, but it was only because of you and Sango that I was able to protect myself.”
He just nodded a little. “So, you feeling up to some food? I could order us some room service while you finish your bath.”
“Hmm, maybe after,” she said as she stood up.
He rose and offered her his hand to help her step out. “After what?”
She grabbed a towel and began to dry herself with it before answering. “After you come back to bed with me and I let you kiss me everywhere he put his hands so if I start to remember, I can just think about you instead.”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” he said with a grin.
She squealed a little as he tossed away her towel and swept her up into his arms, but made no protest, her arms closing around his neck. He carried her over to the bed vowing to himself never to take her for granted. For so long he’d been convinced that he was better off alone, but as he looked at her, he knew just how wrong he had been. His new life had begun the day he’d met her and he would do whatever it took to keep her with him always. How could anyone ever want to hurt this woman with her bright heart and her beautiful soul? The mercy of a quick death was too good for someone like that.
“I hope that scowl on your face isn’t for me,” she said, snapping him from his thoughts.
“Keh, sorry,” he told her as he moved to shed his clothing. “It definitely wasn’t for you. Seems like you aren’t the only one who needs something to take your mind off that bastard the ones who work for him.”
“Guess you should hurry up already then,” she teased with a smile, though he could see her understanding in her eyes.
He moved down to the end of the bed, fully intending on worshipping every centimeter of her, so that there would be nothing left of the memory of that bastard in her head. She giggled breathlessly as he pressed a kiss against the arch of her foot. The sound of it filled his heart to aching and then beyond as she reached for him.
“Another time,” she said.
As he moved to lay over her, to be inside her, the only thing he could think about was how it should be impossible for her to know him so well, as if they were one in mind as they were in body. He nuzzled her throat as he moved within her. She clutched at him, clung to him, her entire body embracing his and he knew that this was exactly where he was meant to be, that they were meant for each other.
Later that night when room service had come and gone, and they lay together in the quiet dark, he watched her sleep. It was strange the sort of sorrow he found himself feeling for those who would never have what he did in this moment. To have to live their entire lives without ever knowing what it was to find the other half of their heart, or worse to endure the loss of it. Just thinking about losing her was enough to make him sick to his stomach, to imagine the rest of his life without her.
She stirred rolling into him, her arm sliding around him as she pressed her face against his chest and breathed deeply. “S’matter?”
It made no sense of course that she should be able to sense his brooding in her sleep, and yet somehow he wasn’t surprised. He circled his arms around her and drew her even closer still, letting her scent and the caress of her reiki sooth him. “What could be the matter when I’ve got you.”
He didn’t have to be able to see her to know she was smiling.
“Love you,” she murmured, drifting back to sleep as if she’d never been awake at all.
“Love you too,” he whispered as he held her just a little more tightly.
He would protect her, and rid the world of the evil bastard who was terrorizing her because there was no other way this could turn out. He wouldn’t lose her or let that piece of shit take from them all the years of their life together. He didn’t care what fate or the kami-sama might have planned for them. Nothing and noone was going to take her away from him, even if he had to face down hell itself.
