A/N: The story begins at last...lol Anyway we have finally reached the plot, so please R&R and recieve my undying love
I also added a lot of chapters this time since it took me so long to update so make sure you went back far enough I think it was chapter 12-19 today.
Kagome looked at herself in the mirror with each passing day the swelling of her belly seemed to get just a little bigger and and with it her excitement also grew. None of the worries of the reality of her world seemed to matter when she could see proof of the life inside her. She couldn’t let fears about the future keep her from enjoying the present.
At her last visit Hisako had told her how important it was that she remain as positive and stress free as possible since her part youkai child could sense her mental state. So far she hadn’t had any trouble and a lot of that had to do with InuYasha. Whatever he had said to his brother had worked and he had been spending more time with her than ever, doting on her and on their pup.
He was always talking to the baby and recently been moved almost to tears as he announced that he could hear the fluttering whoosh of the baby’s heartbeat. She had to admit that he hadn’t been the only one and that she had been just a little jealous.
Reluctantly she left the bathroom and went to get her robes. She didn’t really want to go down to the main branch today, but she had chosen that over having them come to her home on the off chance that they might run into InuYasha or sense something she wasn’t ready for them to know. She would go down and give her update and then see to a few matters that had been waiting for her attention but that weren’t as simply as reading a report or signing a form. Once that was done she would return home where InuYasha was sure to be waiting for her, since they had agreed to meet this afternoon.
She put on her hakui and her hakama, a little sad that it hid her belly completely. Once that was done she put on her chihaya and tied back her hair with a white ribbon. She smiled a little thinking about how that would be the first thing to go once she and InuYasha were alone together. He liked her hair free and little wild not tied back. She decided that would be her happy thought to help her maintain her serenity even when Kikyou or someone else voiced the same tired objections to her plans.
She headed down stairs and slipped on her sandals before picking up her bow and stepping out into the morning sunshine. The sky was clear and the temperature mild. She took a deep breath and headed down the stone stairs convinced that it was going to be a really good day.
~ * ~
InuYasha paced at the top of the shrine steps. Kagome and he had agreed to meet nearly an hour ago to work on the next scroll and then hopefully to sneak in some time alone once that was done before he had to go home and report to his brother. Her morning had been booked at the main branch but she had assured him that she would be free that afternoon.
His youkai was a fucking mess and it was all he could do not to go tearing through the city in search of her. He pulled out his phone and called the monk, thankful that Kagome had insisted that he have the man’s number just in case he ever needed his help when she was unreachable.
“Hello?”
“Oi, Bouzo, you talked to Kagome in the last hour?” InuYasha asked. “She was supposed to meet me here at the shrine about an hour ago and she hasn’t shown up yet.”
“She left here nearly two hours ago,” Miroku replied.
“Shit,” InuYasha said. “Meet me outside in ten minutes. I’ll try and see if I can pick up her scent.”
Miroku was waiting for him outside. He ignored all the disbelieving stares at one of youkai blood standing outside the headquarters for those with spiritual powers.
“I will watch your back,” Miroku told him. “Just do what you can.”
Had it been anyone else, anyone he was not so connected to, so intimately familiar he would have had no hope in picking out her scent. He started following the path she would have taken to get to the shrine. After a few blocks he found his first trace. She had gripped a sign post while waiting at a light to cross the street. There was no scent of fear or anything that might lead him to believe that she had been in trouble or suspected that someone was after her.
“She was okay when she got here,” he told the monk.
They kept walking and he found another trace of her scent in the bushes at the edge of the park. He bent down and found the ribbon that she used to tie back her hair. There was also the scent of youkai on it and he growled. If a youkai had grabbed her then why hadn’t she used her powers to defend herself? It didn’t make sense unless they had drugged her or knocked her out. He searched around and found her scent again, against the side of a trash bin and it was laced with fear, and there was the barest hint of her blood. He found the source. One of her fingernails had torn partially off as she had tried to grab hold of the wire cage holding the bin.
He turned to the monk with the ribbon still in his hand. “She’s gone. Some bastard fucking snatched her right off the street. We need to know if there are any cameras that might have seen who took her.”
Miroku pulled out his phone and started making calls. InuYasha wasn’t really picking up anything he was saying. He was too busy trying not to lose his shit. If whoever had her hurt so much as one hair on her head he would visit upon them such pain that death would seem like a blessing.
“We will have any video footage that might show us anything within the hour,” Miroku said. “I have sent out an alert and within the next 20 minutes everyone with spiritual powers will know that they need be on the lookout for her.”
“I have a friend, she has the sight,” InuYasha said. “I’m going to take her this ribbon and see if she can get anything off it.”
Miroku frowned. “Are you sure that is wise? What if your friend sees who the father of Kagome’s child is?”
“She already knows,” he replied. “She read Kagome and saw our future months ago before there even was a baby.”
“Would you allow me to come with you?” Miroku asked.
“Keh, my friend’s a hanyou. Is that going to be a problem?” InuYasha questioned.
“I know I did not have the best reaction when Kagome told me about who had fathered her child, but how I feel about it is irrelevant,” Miroku told him. “The only thing that matters is that she loves you and trusts you and that we find her and get her back safely. I will do whatever it takes to make that happen.”
“Then let’s go. It isn’t far,” InuYasha said.
Shiori looked out through the peephole and smiled upon seeing that it was Inu-onii-chan knocking so furiously on her door. She opened it and her smile fell as she felt his youki and saw the look on his face. She didn’t even really notice the monk who came in behind him and closed the door.“What happened?” she asked.
He offered her the ribbon. “Someone took her. You have to see what you can get off this.”
“Of course,” she agreed at once.
She took the ribbon and closed her eyes. She saw the great miko walking home, a smile on her face and a song in her heart. She was so happy to be headed back to the shrine to be with him and happy about the swelling of her belly that was still easily concealed by her robes.
Everything that followed happened so fast, something falling down over her head, cutting off her ability to touch her gift. Her heart broke as she reached out trying to grab onto anything to stop them from taking her. Pain swept over her as her nail was torn past the quick and fear as she was shoved roughly into a van. She tried to get back to the door, but he backhanded her and she curled up her arms wrapped protectively around her middle as her vision darkened around the edges.
After that all the futures that had come about because she had been kidnapped rushed into her in a blur. As usual some were terrible and others filled with joy, and most importantly the one where she and InuYasha led them all into a brave new world of peace and hope was still intact.
Shiori opened her eyes as InuYasha’s arms came around her to steady her. Her hands were shaking so badly that the ribbon slipped between her fingers and onto the floor. She let herself be guided over to the sofa to sit down. InuYasha looked up when the monk appeared beside him with a bottle of water.
“Sorry, nii-chan,” she said quietly. “I know you are anxious but I need a minute.”
He shook his head. “It’s okay. I know using your gift is hard on you.”
Miroku watched the interaction between InuYasha and the girl and wondered how they had come to know one another. They were clearly very close and cared about each other a great deal. That she hadn’t even hesitated to use her gift when it was so clearly difficult for her said more than words ever could, and the same would have to be said about InuYasha’s patience with her considering it was Kagome and his child that had been abducted.
Shiori took several deep calming breaths. “First of all she’s alive. I know that for sure, even now. I didn’t see any future where she doesn’t deliver her baby so there is time” Both InuYasha and the monk appeared visibly relieved at her words so she continued, “I can’t see who has her or where she is, but I know for certain that the answer lies somewhere in the scrolls she found. That’s all I can tell you. I’m so sorry nii-chan.”
“It’s not your fault,” he told her. “It’s mine.”
Miroku snorted. “No more your fault than mine, or hers for being born in the first place. None of us could have anticipated this. At least now though we know that she is alive and will remain so for six months more.”
Four,” InuYasha said. “We have four months to find her. Hanyou pregnancies are only seven months.”
“Four then,” Miroku repeated. “I will return to the main branch and see if there are any leads in the video footage, and I will assign myself to be the one who resumes working on scrolls. It is what Kagome would have wanted.”
InuYasha nodded, knowing the monk was right. “Shit it’s going to be slow going. I don’t know how to use half that shit and I don’t suppose you are familiar with the more archaic forms of writing.”
“Unfortunately, I am not, but this cannot be trusted to anyone else,” Miroku said. “We will find a way to get it done, though. Of that I am certain.”
InuYasha stood up. “All right then. I have to go report to Sesshomaru and the next few days are probably going to be hell. You have my number from when I called you earlier. Call me when you have a time we can meet to start working on the scrolls.”
InuYasha stopped outside the door to his brother’s office. He’d sort of hoped that by the time he had to tell his brother about Kagome and the pup that things would already be settled between their peoples, but that wasn’t an option anymore. Finding Kagome and his pup was more important than avoiding any fight he might end up having with Sesshomaru. Though, he supposed it couldn’t hurt to avoid pissing him off before he had even said a word. That in mind he raised his hand and for the first time ever he knocked before entering the office.“Enter,” Sesshomaru said.
Were the situation not so dire InuYasha would have laughed at the actual expression on his brother’s face upon seeing it was him who had actually not just come barging in. As it was though his youkai was impatient and not in the mood to enjoy such things. He paced in front of the desk, growling quietly as he tried to decide how best to begin.
“The Great Miko has been abducted,” InuYasha said.
“Hn, that is unfortunate news,” Sesshomaru replied. “We must consider what impact this will have on the truce.”
InuYasha slammed his hands down on the desk. “Fuck the truce. The monk has already agreed to keep working with me. What we need to worry about it finding the Great Miko.”
“You seem upset, little brother,” Sesshomaru said.
“My question is why aren’t you?” InuYasha demanded.
“She is but one woman,” he replied. “As long as the truce remains in effect that is what really matters. You said yourself that the monk has agreed to continue her work.”
InuYasha growled and realized that he was going to have to tell his brother the whole truth. “You know she’s with child.”
“I have heard,” Sesshomaru said. “It is rumored to be the child of the monk.”
InuYasha snorted. “That would be like me knocking up Shiori. Shit, Sesshomaru, the baby she’s carrying is mine.”
“This is no time for jokes,” Sesshomaru said with a frown.
“The baby is mine, nii-san,” InuYasha said quietly. “It’s mine and so is she. We have to find her.”
esshomaru gave him a hard look and then pressed his fingers to his temples and rubbed them in small circles. “How long has this been going on?”
InuYasha sighed. “Looking back, I’d say from the moment we met, but we’ve been sleeping together since the first week. It was right after she came to the dinner with the other youkai lords that we decided to make it official. Then about two months ago she told me she was pregnant and that was when I knew for certain that she was my mate.”
“How is it that no one has sensed the baby’s youki?” Sesshomaru asked.
“Keh, she made a rosary that hides the youki,” InuYasha explained. “She knew that her pregnancy would be seen as a good thing as long as no one figured out I was the father. As the last direct descendant of Midoriko everyone has been anxious for her to continue the bloodline.”
“You should have told me,” Sesshomaru said.
“Yeah, that would have gone over real well,” InuYasha snorted. “If I had told you when it started you would have ordered me to end it and forbid me from seeing her anymore.”
“I will not deny that, but at the very least you should have informed me when she became pregnant and you were certain she was your mate,” Sesshomaru said. “Once that point was reached I could not have ordered you to end the relationship and I could have seen to her protection.”
“You still would have been pissed and you probably would have kept me too busy to see her just out of spite,” InuYasha said. “We were hoping to have all this shit resolved and a treaty in place before she had the pup.”
Sesshomaru didn’t disagree mostly because his brother was right. He could not place too much fault with his brother though, knowing that she was his mate. The initial attraction would have been too great to resist once the miko responded positively to his advances. It wasn’t an ideal situation but it could perhaps prove to be a positive one once the truth was revealed and a treaty negotiated. A blood tie between his house and the great miko herself would be proof of her sincerity to the youkai at least.
“Have you gone to the girl to seek a vision?” Sesshomaru asked.
“Keh, it’s the first thing I did,” InuYasha replied. “She can’t see who has her, only that the scrolls have the answer we need and that there is no future where she doesn’t deliver the pup.”
“Hn,” Sesshomaru said thoughtfully. “Then we have… four months to locate her. It will be difficult to find teams willing to search for her, or at least those willing to actually search for her once out of my sight.”
“We should make contact with the Cranes and the Black Bears. Both their clans have more reason to want to look for her,” InuYasha offered. “Also Shiori’s dating that kitsune. Fuck, his name is… Shippou. He’s head over heals for her and owes me one for saving his parents when he was just a kit. He’s a sneaky little shit who always knows way more than he should. We should get him to start seeing what he can find out.”
“The kitsune do have a remarkable spying network,” Sesshomaru admitted. “If you are owed a favor then it would be best if you called it in. Proceed with that and I will contact Kaito and Mamoru. Since I know I could not order it to be otherwise you are freed from all other duties except translating the scrolls and following leads about your miko. Though I will still expect you to check in regularly.”
“By phone, you mean,” InuYasha clarified.
“Yes, phone contact will suffice,” Sesshomaru said sounding tired. “I assume I will be able to find you at the shrine of the great miko most of the time anyway if I need to meet with you face to face.”
