Kagome was late again. She was only supposed to be gone for three days, yet it’s already been four. That useless human... t sht she even turn up on time.
Inu Yasha glanced down the well’s deep darkness, before angrily letting out his breath through his teeth. The well remained stone silent, and no matter how much he was expecting a bright light to suddenly start shining to signal her coming, it didn’t come. The hanyou’s eyes narrowed to form thin slits.
No. He’ll stay here, and wait for her. Why the hell does he always have to go after her anyway! It’s not like he’s her mother!
The hanyou let out another agonizing sigh and slouched against the well, ears still straining to hear any sort of noise coming from the well. His red haori was damp from the night before but it was bearable. Even though he spent quite a bit of time trying to dry his kimono (I really don’t know what to call Inu Yasha's outfit…so kimono will have to do for now) it would not dry properly.
After sitting on the ground with his back to the well for a short while, he got a sudden irresistible urge to look at his arms. Thoughts of how violent he was to himself sent shivers down his spine...though he had to admit that for a short while there, and then, it felt... serene.
Watching his blood drip onto the ground in slow and lazy leaps gave him what nothing else could have given him. This unbreakable, untouchable fascination, and what seemed like eternal quiet and peace. Humans were t, it, it did give you unbelievable relief, but most of all, it made you forget who you were. If for a second, you were someone you didn’t mind being, because then it didn’t matter.
Inu Yasha pushed up his spacious sleeves and revealed the torn flesh to the light. His bright golden eyes glanced over the damage in a skilled, practiced manner. Dark brown horizontal cuts covered his lower arms, though readily healing, still looked fragile and vulnerable to further damage. One of his hands reached over to touch the top of a wound when a sudden loud croak of a crow startled him out of his daze.
He quickly turned around to look back into the empty, dark well. No longer wishing to preserve his anger, Inu Yasha gave out a low, almost silent growl and jumped. He was tired of waiting. Demons carrying shards didn’t just wait for them to come. If they didn’t hurry up, they might not get a chance to collect a certain shard for a long time.

She wasn’t at home. Inu Yasha’s eyes darted around the empty room he was looking at from a high up branch. Her smell drifted from the open windows in his direction. His ears drooped slightly at the thought of waiting for even longer.
Easily leaping through the widow, the hanyou skillfully landed on the soft rug that lay in front of Kagome’s. Af. After taking a few unconscious puffs of Kagome’s smell, he carefully listened if there was anyone in the house. He heard faint scrubbing from the outside, automatically thinking that it was probably nothing more than the old guy sweeping the pavement.
With slight hesitation, he edged towards Kagome’s open door that led towards the rest of the house.
*A few minutes later*
Inu Yasha was in the kitchen. Having got used to a few extremely alien looking appliances and machines, he decided it would be better if he didn’t touch anything. Though upon spotting the knife rack close to the sink, that thought immediately dissolved into thin air.
The sharp edges flickered in the light of the sun, and the clean, bright metal of the blades centered Inu Yasha's attention. Having seen the knives, he seeme’ve ’ve immediately lost interest in all else that was in the kitchen.
Inu Yasha froze. Wasn’t he thinking about this the other night? About how nice it would’ve been had he had one of Kagome’s futuristic and sharp knives... yeah. And right now, he was looking at that very object.
*~*
“Damn, damn, damn!” Kagome shoved a couple of t-shirts into her worn old traveling bag while huffing panickily (ehehehe, I know this word doesn’t exist... I just couldn’t be bothered to change the whole sentence) out of stress. ‘He’s going to kill me!’ The floor, bed, and table were all covered in clothes while Kagome desperately tried to pack up all the essentials.
Kagome glanced outside her window to look at the sky. The sun was nearly all gone, and the scarlet colors bled the sky. Her eye brows lowered in guilt as she realized that she was a whole day late!
Not wasting anymore time, Kagome quickly sprinted out of her room to rush down stairs and into the kitchen. Swiftly rushing to the cupboard that contained the Higurashi emergency supply of ranmen, Kagome took as many packets as she could carry in her arms.
“Kagome?” Her mother’s unexpected voice startled Kagome making her drop some of the packets of ranmen she managed tlanclance on top of the pile she was carrying.
“Mom, you scared me!” Kagome turned around to find Mrs. Higurashi chopping some vegetables. Sporting an old fashioned motherly apron, Mrs. Higurashi turned around to face her daughter with a concerned smile.
“Kagome, are you leaving today?” A faint sadness entered her mother’s light blue eyes to see her daughter leave. Before Kagome could confirm her departure and sympathize with her mother, Mrs. Higurashi’s eyes quickly lit up with newly remembered knowledge. “Oh before you go, Kagome-chan, have you by any chance taken one of my knives from the knife rack?” Kagome’s mother nodded her head in the direction of the knife rack while wiping her hands dry on the apron.
Hardly paying attention, Kagome bent over to pick up the ranmen packets she dropped on the floor earlier on. “No. I don’t think so. Have you asked Souta, and Grandpa? They might’ve taken a knife for one thing or another.” Mrs. Higurashi walked over to help her daughter with the noodle packets after seeing Kagome dropping even more on the floor whilst trying to pick up the others.
“I asked Ji-chan about it, he told me that he knew nothing of missing knives... that is except a few made up legends; and to be truthful, even though Souta said he doesn’t mbermber, I don’t think he even knows where the knife rack is, so chances of him taking a knife are pretty slim.” Once all the packets were collected and safely placed in Kagome’s arms, the two females stood up.
Kagome’s eyes unconsciously darted to the collection of knives that was placed by the windowsill and quickly spotted where the missing knife should be hanging. Finding the incident slightly strange, Kagome turned to face her mother. “I really don’t know mum, but if I see it anywhere, I’ll tell you.” Kagome’s mother nodded in appreciation and started back to the table where she was chopping vegetables before Kagome’s arrival to the kitchen.
“Thank you, darling. I hope you have a nice trip- I’ll see you in a week?”
“Yes, mum.” Kagome left the kitchen and made her way back to her room.

With the last of her strength Kagome pushed over the side of the well, her poor old yellow bag followed her suit and landed heavily on the ground beside her. She let out a heavy sigh and continued to just lie on the ground, letting her muscles rest for a little while.
The clear sky vertically above her was already sprinkled in a grand mass of stars. She would’ve stayed to watch for a little longer if a curtain of silvery white hair didn’t suddenly obstruct her view. ‘Damn.’ Kagome’s thoughts were immediately in a scramble trying to sort out how she should act in front of him. Inu Yasha was standing right above her, with his feet planted close to either side of her head.
The way Inu Yasha was glaring at her told her that this wasn’t going to end quite as well as she would’ve liked it to. Kagome quickly rose into sitting position just as he came round to glower down at her from the side. “Um, look, I’m really, really sorry that I’m la-“
“How the hell does that fix anything?!” Kagome flinched at his rough voice while still getting up so that at least he wouldn’t look down at her. As much as he is now...
“Geezez! Don’t make such a tragedy out of it!” Kagome’s eyebrows took a dive into a guilty expression. She finally managed to stand up to face him face to face, with her back towards the well.
“Well shit! How the fuck am I supposed to rely on your ass if you can’t even bother to turn up on time?!” Inu Yasha's voice rose a pitch or two, just as he thrust his hands into his sleeves, still glaring at her.
“I said I was sorry- besides I couldn’t help it!”
“Sorry doesn’t cut it-“ Inu Yasha looked as if he was about to say more when Kagome leaned slightly in his direction with an angry glint in her eyes.
“Will you listen to yourself?!” Inu Yasha's eyes narrowed even further at that, and his hands fisted in his sleeves.
“Don’t interrupt me!” he snapped.
“You interrupt ‘me’!”
“That’s it! Now I really am going to stuff that rock down that ‘damn’ well- so we wont fucking ‘ever’ have this conversation again!” His hands flew out of his sleeves just a sto stomped over to an oversized boulder lying about five meters away from the well.
Kagome suddenly began to panic a little bit. “Inu Yasha... don’t 'be' like that!” Unconsciously spreading her arms slightly to defend the well as well as a skinny teenage girl can defend a well against a furious and stubborn demon.
Ignoring her, Inu Yasha picked up the overgrown (with vegetation) rock and balanced it in his arms. Kagome’s voice began to get slightly desper “In “Inu Yasha, I’ll say ‘it’”
“Fuck you!” He snapped and swiftly began to make his way to the old well. Kagome spread her arms further out and backed up against his target, nearly falling in.
“Fine! Sit!” Kagome finally shouted at him and at the same time lowered her arms in defeat.
Inu Yasha let out a startled gasp behind the rock he was holding auickuickly collapsed to the ground, the boulder followed suit and landed close to his head with a loud thud. One of Inu Yasha's ears twitched while he kept his face buried in the luscious grass.
Nobody moved. Kagome let out some air she didn’t know she was holding while at the same time still observing Inu Yasha. A few uncomfortable moments passed before Kagome managed to get a hold on her vocal cords.
“H-hey.” Taking an uncertain step towards his stiff figure, Kagome’s voice shook a bit. “Are you okay?” She hadn’t sat him for quite a while now, maybe... no, Inu Yasha's strong, he can take it. If he can handle eight sits, surely he can take one!
Kagome broke out of her daze and quickly scrambled towards his lying figure. Crouching by his side she reached out for one of his arms, but as soon as she touched his sleeve, Inu Yasha angrily pulled away from her grasp. Turning his face away and leaning on the arm she touched, he snapped at her- “Will you just ‘go’ to the village already! I don’t have the patience for you at the moment!”
Kagome’s eyes widened in shock. She could think of a couple of come backs, but thought the better of answering him, and instead hastily got to her feet and scurried to her big and heavy bag.
“Fine, I’m going.” She picked up her rack-sac and started walking in the direction of the village, angry at him for being such a total and utter jerk.
Inu Yasha lay on the ground for a couple more minutes, slowly thinking over what just happened while watching Kagome’s little form slowly disappear behind the dark horizon.
When he couldn’t see her anymore he allowed himself to lower his head to the ground while running one of his hands through his hair. A long sigh of frustration escaped him. It’s not like they heard any rumors or had any leads to follow anyway, so why was he so annoyed...
Inu Yasha fisted a hand and slammed it into the ground sending a slight shiver through the earth. Now Kagome was pissed off at him, and this time he felt guilty about it, which made him more mad than ever.
With a low growl, Inu Yasha pushed himself off the ground and kicked the boulder to the side, where he got it from, no longer wishing to block up the well. The night sky and the cool evening breeze reminded him how late it was.
Why was Kagome always so bloody virtuous?! It really aggravated him when she just gave into him and walked away with things unsaid. It made him mad that she always had to be 'grown up' about everything! And it always seemed to be his fault?!
Inu Yasha angrily kicked a bush as he trotted up to the God tree he was planning on resting on. He jumped into the tree and settled down on his favorite branch. Shoving his hands into his sleeves again, Inu Yasha pouted while unpleasant thoughts slowly led him to self-loath.
Letting out an irritated breath he pointlessly attempted to sleep. When sweet darkness didn’t envelop his troubled mind and send him to the wonderful land of unconsciousness, Inu Yasha suddenly remembered the knife he had hidden in his haiori (that looks terribly wrong...oh well).
Inu Yasha quickly remembered how he shouted at Kagome for no real reason. He had the right to be mad at her, yes, but not the right to shout and scream as if it was going to help anyone.
Slowly slipping the knife out of the folds of his haiori, Inu Yashak a k a moment to observe it’s sharp edge. It was a nice knife. Sharp and small, exactly what he needed. Of course he could’ve stolen a knife from one of the villagers, though finding a nice knife like this would’ve taken some searching. After all, he didn’t really steal it in the end, he ‘borrowed’ it. And besides, Kagome had loads of knives almost identical to this one- she wouldn’t mind if one went missing...for a while.
Inu Yasha watched the knife glisten in the faint mooht tht that managed to get through the thick layers of dark leaves. The warm wooden handle was nicely and carefully carved, specifically curved to fit the lines of your hands. The whole knife was a little bigger than his hand, and it was sleek.
Pulling one of his sleeves up, Inu Yasha revealed readily healing scratches from last night.
Without further hesitation he slowly brought the sharp edge of the knife towards a fresh patch of skin on his arm. Watching carefully, he felt the flesh gradually break as the knife sank deeper. He quickly pulled on the blade, leaving a neat line in its wake. Slowly the dark line swelled and overflowed its low banks. In the dim light the rich red of the blood turned to a dense black that seemed to clash with his light skin.
A few more gashes and Inu Yasha let himself sigh and lean against the tree. The blood dripped onto the hard and rough bark of the God tree. Branch like patterns covered his arms as the blood flowed downwards, some stains appeared on his already red haiori, and Inu Yasha closed his golden eyes.
Relief. No more anguish, or anger.
Inu Yasha sat there for few more minutes, thinking of nothing except his arms. The gentle sting somehow made him relax all his muscles and just breath. Peace washed over him.
After a while, Inu Yasha opened his eyes and sighed. He then jumped down from tree and jogged over to the lake he paid a visit to yesterday. Crouching down by the lapping water, he carefully washed off the blood from his arms and knife.
Everything was going to be okay. Just as long as they kept on collecting the shards. Just as long as he knew he would be sger.ger. Soon. It will happen, soon.
