Times Change
Chapter 2
Kagome smiled as InuYasha drifted off to sleep by her side. She hated to admit it, but he
was right. She was stretching herself too thin. She was tired and cranky all the time, and she
now had the attention span of a two-year-old. If something wasn't screaming her name, she
completely ignored it. And since InuYasha had just spent the past hour and a half screaming her
name, she could no longer ignore him.
Quitting school completely, was out of the question. If her mother could let her wander
around Feudal Japan for nearly a near, battling demons and gathering jewel shards, without so
much as a raised eyebrow, the least she could do was follow through on her plans and become a
doctor just as her father had been . . . But maybe she could cut back on her credit hours. Instead
of taking on a full credit load as a full-time student, maybe she could only take two or three
classes and be a part-time student.
Now, that would mean she'd have to spend more time in school overall–ten to twelve
years, instead of eight. But with fewer classes, she could concentrate more on her studies and
therefore make better grades. And with less time spent on campus for class, she'd have more
time for her family, friends, and InuYasha . . . That could work. Especially, since she had no
intention of cutting back on the time she spent with her family and friends.
As it was, she didn't feel as if she spent nearly enough time with either of them. There
were her friends' weddings and Ayumi's baby to plan for. And she liked to drop by the temple at
least once a week to check in on Sota, her mother and grandfather. The past two weeks, she'd
been stopping by everyday, but that was because her grandpa was so ill. He'd overdone himself,
shoveling snow at the temple and had come down with a nasty case of pneumonia because of it.
He'd just gotten out of the hospital last week, and the doctor's prescription, coupled with her
herbal remedy, was enabling him to make a complete, though slow recovery.
The older he got; the more she worried about him.
She sighed and sank back beneath the sheets.
Her third option was quitting the café. If she quit waitressing, she'd have more time to
spend with InuYasha and more hours to devote to her studies. She could get her grades up, and
they could go out more. Like they used to–concerts and theme parks and karaoke bars.
Sunbathing at the beach, strolling through the park, camping in the mountains . . . She could feel
herself relaxing already. She'd be done with school in eight years. Her mom would be proud to
call her “doctor,” and she'd have InuYasha by her side.
But if she quit her job, they couldn't keep the flat. She'd have to move back home, and
InuYasha wouldn't have a place to stay. Now, her mother was very modern and fairly open-minded about their relationship. She knew that InuYasha and she were staying together, but
because their flat had two bedrooms, her mother could at least "pretend" they weren't doing
anything "improper." But if she had to move back home . . .. It wasn't like when she was still in
middle school and high school when innocence was presumed until evidence of guilt could be
found. She was an adult now, with adult needs. And InuYasha and she, though not officially
mated, were very much in love and quite committed to each other.
She smiled to herself. And they enjoyed showing their love for each.
He still slept peacefully at her side.
Knowing what she knew of the two of them, the only way her mother could let him stay
at the temple, in good conscience, was if they were married.
Not that she shied away from the idea of marriage. But if they DID actually get married,
she wouldn't be able to postpone parenthood much longer. As it was, she could stay on the Pill
because it was "improper" for a child to be born outside of wedlock. But once they were
married, that excuse was out the door . . . She just couldn't imagine raising a family and going to
school at the same time. Especially, since she was having such a tough time, now. How would
things be if you threw in a baby?
Baby? She bolted upright. "Dammit!"
InuYasha shot up beside her. "What! What is it, Kagome?"
She pushed her covers off and ran across the hall to her own room.
"Kagome?"
She returned with a glass of water and a small green pill. "I forgot to take it this
morning."
He collapsed back in bed and pulled the covers over him. "Not that again," he groaned.
"You should be glad you have such a responsible girlfriend."
He grunted as he watched her wash the pill down her throat with a couple of gulps of
water. She then wiped her mouth, put the glass down on his night stand, and climbed back
beneath the covers, visibly much calmer than when she'd left.
"Would it be so bad if you WERE pregnant?" he asked.
"Don't even joke about that," she said.
"Well, Ayumi's having a baby," he said. "You two are the same age."
She laughed to herself. "Ayumi married a very rich man who can take care of her and
anyone else who comes along."
He wasn't sure if she'd said that to hurt him, but it did. "Well, it's not my fault," he said.
"What's a guy like me supposed to do in a world like this? Your time isn't exactly teeming with
demons."
"I didn't mean it the way it came out," she said.
"Then how DID you mean it?"
"I mean . . ." she was clearly searching for some pretty words to disguise her ugly
thoughts. "They're prepared," she finally said. "They're ready."
"I'm ready," he said.
"And I'm not," she said. "I'd like to finish school first."
"And how long will that take?"
Kagome sighed. "Awhile?"
"Is that a question or an answer?" he asked.
She hesitated a moment longer, then smiled overly wide. "It's only eight years," she said.
"Eight years!"
"Keep it down," she said. "Don't get so excited."
"Well, it doesn't matter how 'excited' I get as long as you keep taking those stupid pills,"
he grumbled. "You expect me to wait eight more years for a son?"
"Or a daughter," she said.
"Unacceptable," he said.
"A daughter's unacceptable?"
"Eight years is unacceptable."
"Well, whatta you want me to do, InuYasha? My mom wants me to be a doctor, and
that's how long it'll take me to become one."
"Feh," he pulled the covers more tightly around him and rolled away from her.
"Is there something else you wanted to say, InuYasha?"
"No," he said.
"We might as well get it out in the open now," she said. "If you keep it in, it'll just keep
building up till it's completely blown out of proportion."
"Forget it," he said.
"I can't forget it. Once again, I find myself in your bad graces and--"
"If we'd stayed on the other side, you'd be doing Kaede's job by now," he said. "No
classes, no professors, no finals . . . You'd be doing the same work as a doctor, and you wouldn't
have to wait eight years to do it. Gods knows the old woman could use the help."
"InuYasha . . ."
"I knew you'd say that."
"Say what?" she asked. "What have I said?"
"You're gonna tell me I'm being silly. You're gonna tell me I'm being selfish. You're
gonna tell me you already put in your time on that side of the well, and it'll be a cold, cold day in
hell before you'll go back."
She gave him a sympathetic smile. "I already said we could go back after finals week."
"I wanna go back to stay. Not to visit."
"InuYasha . . ."
"You wanted to know what I was thinking, and that's what I was thinking.
She didn't know what to say.
"And I'm not saying it to be mean. And I'm not saying that I'm not happy here with you...
But I can distinctly remember being happier over there."
"InuYasha, I--"
"I don't wanna talk about it, any more. Gods know I've gotten on your nerves enough
tonight."
"InuYasha . . . That's not--"
"Good night," he said.
She couldn't leave things like this. Let them go to sleep on such a sour note. She just
had to be patient with him, reason with him. "InuYasha, I know you must have put a lot of
thought into this, but--"
"What else am I gonna do with all my 'free' time? It's not like I have a job like Ayumi's
husband."
"InuYasha!"
"Good night!" He pulled the covers over his head and scooted as far away from her as he
could.
