Just the Two of Us
Chapter One: Forgettable
By: Banshee Puppet
Home at last. Kouga
stripped down and sank into the lake’s cool water. He hissed slightly at the chill. The cold water burned at every scrape on his
body, but it felt good in that way that sore muscles burn after a workout. He sighed, content for now at getting rid of
the day’s dirt and blood, and unfastened his hair, dunking under the
water. He pushed his fingers through the
tangles and reached over for the bar of soap he’d laid in the nearby
grass. He sniffed at it curiously. It was different from the usual, scentless
bars his pack used, this one carrying the peculiar, though not unpleasant scent
of buttermilk and blueberries. Tenku had
gotten it from a different village than the one he usually stopped in, and
though it was more luxurious than practical, Kouga figured it didn’t matter
much as long as it got him clean. With a
shrug, he began lathering his body. He
wanted so badly to be clean of this wretched day, and if that meant bathing by
moonlight, then so be it. The silence
was good for his peace of mind, or at least he hoped so. He put the bar down
and ran his fingers over the burning shoulder where Miroku had touched
him. Something flitted in his chest,
like butterfly wings waiting to open.
“Why can I still feel you?” he wondered aloud. The wolf prince sighed, allowing his eyes to
fall closed as his mind traced back to his strange reaction to the monk earlier
today. ‘Calm down. You’ve done enough for now,’ he had
said. He tried to think back further,
grab onto any memory that would explain it and found himself smiling slightly
at the monk’s laughing face, but that wasn’t anything. When Miroku was happy, it was always
contagious—it even made Sango smile, even Inuyasha (that mutt). He remembered Miroku sitting alone in a
field, staring at his right hand.
Something had made him stop back then.
Loneliness, sorrow, determination.
‘So strong. All of Inuyasha’s
friends are so very strong and spirited.
Are all humans strong like this?’ he had wondered then. He still had no answers to that, or to the
immediate question, but he would begin to prune up if he didn’t get out of here
soon. He dunked under the water again,
rinsing the last bits of soap from his hair before standing. He shivered slightly in the evening breeze. “Brr.
It’s gotten damn cold.” Ringing
out his long hair, Kouga pushed it to fall down his back, and flicked his tail
slightly at the rivulets of water that dripped down his bare skin. ‘Damn soap,’ he thought, realizing that the
scented bar was fogging his sense of smell slightly. His fingers brushed over the spot where
Miroku had touched him yet again. He
didn’t understand why he couldn’t escape the feeling of the monk’s hand. ‘He smells a bit like jasmine, but
muskier. It’s not the same jasmine scent
that a woman would carry—what the heck is wrong with me? Why can’t I stop thinking about him. As far as he’s concerned, I’obabobably
completely forgettable, right?’ But
before he could think any further on the subject, he heard the tiny snapping
sound of a twig. His ear twitched and he
turned his head quickly over his shoulder.
“Who’s there?” he demanded when he heard something splash
slightly into the water. He turned about
quickly, but already too late, as his eyes widened onto an overgrown Cobra,
which swiftly coiled itself tightly around him.
He struggled, but couldn’t get away from it, and it squeezed tighter,
forcing him to gasp for breath. “…the
fuck…?” he managed to mutter between wheezing breaths as his eyes locked onto
the jewel shard embedded in the snake’s forehead before he fell out of
consciousness due to the lack of air entering his lungs.
From out of the trees, his true enemy came, and the Cobra
brought his prey to his master. Golden
reptilian eyes and smooth bronze scales that twisted up clawed arms, down the
back, and over a good portion of the left side of an otherwise not unattractive
face—this is the image of the man who Kouga would come to hate more than anyone
else. Yes, he was one of the higher
demons, a snake breed, most likely from the viper family. “Yesss,” his forked tongue slithered and his
speech came out in reptilian hisses. “You
have done well, my pet. He isss lovely,
ssstuning really.” The youkai ran a
clawed finger along Kouga’s jaw, through his hair. “He will make a sssplendid ssslave.”
