2. Ghosts From the Past
“He should sleep for a while.”
Three heads turned to see Kagome step out onto the wide porch that surrounded the house. At a quiet word from Sango, the tiny kitten youkai scrambled inside. The youkai taijiya shrugged. “Kirara will watch over him. She’ll come for us when he wakes up.”
Kagome sat down at her mate’s side. “We have a real problem,” she said, still trembling from the information she had received from the boy.
The hanyou was instantly on the alert. If something made her this unhappy, it was a safe bet that things were about to take a turn for the worse for all of them. “What the hell is going on?”
“He told me pieces of what happened to him. I don’t think he has any family. He was living alone in a cave. They found him and slapped a seal on him before he could do anything at all.” She shivered again. “He told me that they catch and sell hanyou children to both humans and youkai--as playthings.” She could feel the disgust and indignation all around her. She couldn’t bear to look at her mate.
Miroku asked quietly, “Does he know who they were?”
She shook her head. “The two leaders dressed like Sango. There were others working for them, but they were running things.”
Sango looked down at the hands in her lap. “It’s all my fault….”
“Sango-chan?”
“It’s true,” she said. “I taught them everything they know. They were two of my first students.” She sighed, shaking her head. “They were two brothers who had heard that I was starting to train new taijiya. They were smart, and strong, and agile--I thought they would do well. Unfortunately, they were also greedy and sadistic. They thought that it was a waste of a valuable resource to destroy youkai--that we should enslave them instead. I dismissed them from the group: we couldn’t afford to have people like that in positions where our lives could be in their hands.”
“Apparently,” Miroku added, “They’ve gone into business for themselves.”
Her mate, though indignant, was momentarily thoughtful--there had to be a way to reduce or maybe redirect her distress. “Maybe it’s not so bad. You know what most hanyou’s lives are like--maybe being a servant would be an improvement for some of them.”
Kagome shook her head. “From the sound of it, they don’t just provide servants. I got the impression that the buyers were free to use their property in whatever twisted way suited them--can you imagine what somebody like Naraku would do with a child like this? He did tell me that they’d really like you--to warm some rich woman’s bed.”
The silver-haired hanyou paled suddenly, and she smiled sadly. “Besides,” she continued, “Don’t these kids deserve the same kind of life you’ve managed to make?”
Miroku suddenly stood, resting the butt of his staff on the porch. “I think,” he said, “That it’s time to get the team back together.”
“We can’t!” At the surprised looks from the others, Kagome stumbled for an explanation. “I have to go through the well for a while tomorrow. Maybe we could do it after I get back?”
Sango nodded. “I’ll have to set some lessons for the class while we’re gone, so I could use a day or two as well.”
Since little more could be done that day, they decided that it would be best to return to their respective pursuits so that they could make the necessary preparations for the new journey. Before they departed, the hanyou stopped the young monk. “Can you come back here just after daybreak tomorrow to watch our…guest? I’m going to go with Kagome tomorrow.” He could sense rather than see the shocked--almost panicked--expression that settled on his mate’s features. He was going to have a lot of explaining to do once the others left.

“What do you mean, you’re going with me tomorrow?”
He carefully avoided looking directly at his mate. “I know why you’ve been going back so often. I spoke to your mother about it, and did a little research--I think it’s my fault. I’ve been reading about biology and genetics: I know that most hybrids are sterile. If you think that those healers in your time could find an answer for us, I’m more than willing to do whatever is necessary.” He gathered her trembling form into his arms, lightly stroking the back of her hair. “I don’t want you to cry any more because of this.”
They stood there for several minutes as she quietly wept into the front of his haori.
When she could once again regain her composure, she returned to her vigil at the bedside of the hanyou child, settled into the lap of her mate with his arms around her waist while she waited. They spoke in quiet tones, talking about their plans for the future and discussing exactly how far they were willing to take their search for a family.
They had been there for slightly more than an hour when the child finally stirred. At a silent gesture from his mate, Inuyasha went out to the kitchen and returned with a large tray of food. Although the child was nearly starving, he was restricted to some soup and a small bowl of rice--anything more substantial would react badly with a stomach unaccustomed to adequate food.
After the small meal, Kagome checked the bandages on the boy’s rapidly healing wounds. Although the cuts on his legs would restrict his movements for some time, he would, in time, recover fully. She helped the boy back into bed, pulling the blanket up to his chin. “Would you tell me your name?”
He looked momentarily thoughtful. “They called me Ja’aku back in my mother’s village.”
Kagome’s voice was quiet. Did your mother pick that name for you?”
He shook his head. “No. She died when I was born. Her brother gave me that name.”
The older hanyou had more questions. “How long did you live in that village?”
The boy shook his head slowly. “I’m not sure--I think I left after four or five years. The people there didn’t hurt me, but they hated my mother because of me, and I couldn’t stand to hear them talk about her like that any more.”
The silver-haired hanyou nodded slowly. “I was a little more than five when I left my mother’s home. She was killed by her own people because they were scared of me, and I had to run for it.”
“I never heard of a hanyou that got to live as long as you.” The boy looked like he was finally starting to trust one of the new people in his life.
Inuyasha shook his head. “They usually don’t. You probably understand better than anybody: youkai will kill you at the first opportunity, and humans--most of them, anyway--will try to chase you away if they can’t kill you outright.” He sighed, resting a hand on the boy’s head. “I’m probably the oldest living hanyou in the entire country.”
His mate shook her head. “No, you’re not.” At his blank expression, she continued, “Jinenji is older than you are--at least, if you don’t count the time when you were sealed.” She turned her attention to the child, who was starting to drift off to sleep. “Would you like to stay here with us, at least for a while?”
Too far gone in sleep to do more, the boy nodded slowly. Kagome reached out and lightly stroked his ears, causing his eyes to close in what was probably the first pleasurable sensation he could remember. “Good night, Takara.”
