Chapter I: Enter Rin
The bell rang throughout the halls of Shihou High, bouncing off the metal lockers lining the walls and into the students chattering loudly to one another as they walked to their classes.
Seijunaki Rin was no exception. The petite, dark-haired, chocolate brown-eyed sophomore walked beside her friend, her pale blue backpack resting on her shoulders and a textbook clutched to her chest, listening intensely to the gossip her friend insisted she be filled in on.
“And then supposedly she caught him in the janitor’s closet. You know, the one next to Mrs. Takahashi’s room? Yeah, anyway, she said she saw him engaged in some major tonsil hockey with that totally gorgeous new guy who enrolled a couple weeks ago. I mean, talk about crazy, right?”
“Um .. Yeah, wow. Crazy,” she said, not in the least bit interested, but tried to sound like it for her friend’s sake.
“Who’s crazy? You’re not telling people about my mental state, are you, Lulu? And here I thought you could keep it a secret!”
Rin watched with a small smile as the brutish-looking, dark-haired school wrestling champion draped a heavy, muscular arm around her friend’s tiny frame, pulling her against his frighteningly large body.
Lulu grinned, not even looking up at her boyfriend as she replied, “Secret? Kisho, your insanity is no more a secret than that time you peed your pants last week.”
Kisho’s grin tightened as he pulled his girlfriend closer to him, biting out between clenched teeth, “Sweetie… I thought we already discussed this. No spilling my embarrassing moments in front of company.”
Lulu waved a dismissive hand, smiling at Rin who was looking on in interest and amusement over this new information. “Oh, pfft. Honey, everybody knows about your little .. accident.”
Smile still frozen in place, the popular jock leaned in close to hiss in her ear, ”Not. Rin.”
“Oh.” Lulu paused, looked at Rin, and then up at her boyfriend. The she smiled sweetly. “Well, now everybody knows. Come along, Rin. Math class awaits us.”
Guiltlessly brushing her boyfriend off, the stunning blonde hooked her arm in Rin’s and pulled her with her, smiling prettily as they left Kisho standing alone, his mouth agape.
----------
Rin sat in the only chair positioned next to the window, her cheek resting heavily in her hand, her boredom evident. As her teacher droned on about the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles, she just watched as she forced her pencil to doodle and scribble utter nonsense at the very top of the lined paper, trying to amuse herself with a mental conversation with the yellow writing utensil.
Mr. Pencil: I see you’re bored again.
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: Is it that obvious?
Mr. Pencil: Well, at least you’re not gnawing on my body, painfully and mercilessly removing chunks of my yellow coating, and then cruelly forsaking me to drown in saliva.
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: Watch it. I could always hand you over to the itchy-scratchy guy next to me. I hear he forgets when he borrows and uses said whatever borrowed item to scratch himself wherever he deems itchy.
Mr. Pencil: You. Wouldn’t. Dare.
Lonely-Girl-wish-No-Life: -insert sigh here- Yeah, you’re right. You’re my only pencil I have right now; otherwise, I would gladly hand you over.
Mr. Pencil: But why?! What have I ever done to you?
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: You got me a ‘D’ on my last test. And your doodles are really crappy. You make my crappy paper look even more crappy.
Crappy-Paper: I resent that!
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: You would, crappy paper with crappy doodles all over him because my crappy pencil can only doodle crappy doodles because he’s crappy like that.
Mr. Pencil and Crappy-Paper: Miss Seijunaki?
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: Yeah?
Mr. Pencil and Crappy-Paper: Miss Seijunaki.
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: Yeah?
Mr. Pencil and Crappy-Paper: Miss Seijunaki!
Lonely-Girl-with-No-Life: What?!
“MISS SEIJUNAKI!”
Rin gasped and shot up in her seat, sitting ramrod stiff against the back of her chair, her soft, chocolate brown eyes shooting about the classroom franticly. She heard quiet sniggers and saw amused smiles on her fellow peers’ faces.
“Miss. Seijunaki. So good of you to finally join us.”
Rin grimaced at the cold, irritated tone of her math teacher and she leaned away slightly as she tilted her head back to gaze up his towering, intimidating form and locking eyes with his glaring gray ones.
“S-sorry, Mr. Kokumori …” she mumbled, dropping her gaze and shoving her fists in her lap to keep from trembling under his heavy, disapproving gaze.
“Miss Seijunaki, while normally I would force you to undergo one of my famous lectures about how ‘not paying attention‘, ‘not taking proper notes‘, and ‘failing my class’ are all entwined and out to cause you utter misery, I will refrain from doing so on account that you are still new. But you will not do it again. Understood, Miss Seijunaki?”
Rin swallowed hard, her face hot from humiliation.
‘Wow, talk about harsh! I only zoned out for a few minutes!’
Suddenly the large palm of her teacher’s hand came crashing down on her notebook with a resounding bang that caused her pencil to bounce and roll off the desk.
“MISS SEIJUNAKI!”
‘Oops.’
Rin had to force herself not to recoil away when her teacher grasped the back of her chair with one hand while keeping the other flat on her notes and leaned in slowly, becoming eye level with her even though she refused to meet his gaze, knowing doom awaited her if she did.
“Do you,” he whispered harshly, causing her to flinch, “understand, Miss Seijunaki?”
Still refusing to meet his eyes, Rin stammered quietly, “Y-Yes, Mr. Kokumori. I’m s-sincerely sorry. P-Please accept my apology.”
She heard a rumble of what sounded like approval and she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding when he pulled away and began his journey to the front of the room once more.
But she wasn’t in the clearing yet.
“Be warned, Miss Seijunaki,” he said turning his back to the blackboard and directing a steely gaze to her, “that slipping this early in the semester will only cause more slipping, and will thus bring you to disaster in the end. You do not, Miss Seijunaki,” his gaze turned suddenly ruthless, “want to fail my class.”
She looked down in her lap, nodding slightly before mumbling loud enough for him to hear, “Yes, sir.”
“Good. Now then!” He suddenly smiled, his eyes crinkling in the corners happily. “Let us continue on with the lesson, shall we?”
Rin leaned down and picked up her pencil quickly, and then she sat back up, poising it over her doodle-infested paper, but before she could start jotting down notes, she stared at the paper that had just been abused by her bi-polar teacher, and she realized that her imagination was determined to have the last word.
Crappy-Paper: … ow …
--------
Rin shuffled quietly next to Lulu as they filed out of the school and started their way down the sidewalk that would lead them to the busiest part of the city.
Next to her, her beautiful friend sucked and licked at a cherry flavored lollipop, looking content and delighted with life.
She sighed, looking down at her school uniform’s shoes as they scraped against the cracked and stained cement that was the sidewalk.
“Is he always like that?” she mumbled, not bothering to look at to see if her friend heard her.
Lulu paused from lavishing her candy with her tongue and snuck a sideways glance at her before popping her sucker wetly out of her mouth. “Who are you talking about?”
Rin looked up, giving Lulu an irritated look. “You were there, weren’t you?”
The blonde blinked her large, baby blue eyes in confusion. “Where? What are y-- ooooh.”
Rin rolled her eyes. He friend just smiled big and moved closer to give her a small reassuring hug, mindful of her sticky treat.
“Yes. Mr. Kokumori can be total monster sometimes.” She paused and looked thought. “Actually, I take that back. Most of the time he’s a total monster.”
The slender brunette heaved a defeated sigh, gripping the straps of her heavy backpack. “Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better.”
“Oh, relax, Rin. Yeah, he’s harsh, but he’s a really good teacher. He’s the way he is so you won‘t slack off. He really does have the best intentions for his students unlike some of the other staff members.”
She suddenly elbowed her in the ribs while shoving the cherry sucker into her mouth. “Besides, you did ask.”
Rin just shrugged and hiked her backpack higher up on her shoulders.
“So where are we going anyway?” Lulu asked, around a cheek full of lollipop.
“I’ve got karate.”
“Hold it!”
Rin was suddenly yanked to a stop and then her vision was suddenly blocked by the shocked and awed facial expression of her friend.
Lulu popped her sucker out again and asked in a disbelieving tone, “You do karate?!”
Rin scrunched her nose slightly at the powerful scent of cherry and nodded.
“Ohmigod!” she shrieked, grinning. “That is, like, so totally cool!”
Rin smiled back a little, almost wanting to grimace at her outburst of preppy giddiness.
“Yeah, I guess.”
Lulu hooked her arm with Rin’s, looking highly interested and wowed. “So, what, did you just start or something?”
“Um, actually, no. I’ve been doing it since I was eight, I think.”
Lulu’s expression turned into one of confusion. “But … I thought you just moved here last week?”
Rin smiled some, “I did, but I only lived on the other side of Tokyo, Lulu. My grandma would always pick me up and drive me to my lessons when my parents couldn’t.” Her smile quickly died, bringing with it an intense look of despair. “And now that they’re gone … yeah, all I have to do is walk.”
Lulu almost wanted to crush Rin to her when she saw how upset she was. Instead she tightened her hold on her arm and patted her hand.
“I’m sorry about your parents, Rin …” she said softly.
“Yeah,” Rin replied in a soft whisper. “So am I.”
They walked in silence most of the way until the uproar of the most active, busiest part of town hit them.
Lulu, unable to stand looking at her friend so down, unhooked her arm and grasped her hand with hers and waved her cherry lollipop about in the other, exclaiming excitedly, “C’mon, Rin! I wanna see you do some of those cool combo kicks and some back flips and other stuff like Jackie Chan does!”
Rin didn’t even have time to utter a word, let alone a protest because she was forced to run the rest of the way to her karate session, practically being dragged by her overzealous friend.
------
She unlocked the door slowly and pushed on its wooden mass, opening it just enough for her to slip her slight form inside, then pushed it closed and locking it back up.
Rin let her heavy backpack slip off her shoulders and smash down onto the carpeted floor with a muffled thud, and she began dragging it behind her by one of its straps as she trudged into living room tiredly.
“Grandma, I’m home,” she called, plopping down on the couch with a groan. She paused and looked around.
“Grandma?” she called again. Sighing, she pushed herself back onto her feet and moved toward the kitchen.
“Grandma? You here?” she said, looking around. Then her eyes locked onto a piece of paper taped onto the otherwise plain refrigerator door.
“Uh-huh,” she said to herself, quirking a slim eyebrow as she made her way over to the major appliance. Tucking a few strands of her dark hair behind her ear, she plucked the note off the door and began reading it to herself.
‘Hi, sweet pea. I’m out playing bingo with a few friends tonight. I probably won’t be home until late, so don’t wait up, mmk? I promise to make it up to you in the morning by making a nice big breakfast! Anyway, feel free to eat whatever, don’t forget to do your homework, and make sure you get to bed at a reasonable time.
Love you, sweet pea!
-Grandma’
Rin shook her head and sighed again, tossing the note onto the kitchen table and walking back out of the kitchen.
She wasn’t feeling very hungry.
