Reaching for the Sunrise

Inu Yasha entered Kagome's house. His heart was torn, he knew it was his responsibility to protect
her, but how could he protect let alone love someone who was determined to kill him. His angst was
only masked by anger, he couldn't understand, he wouldn't understand, he needed questions
answered. So many questions, he would get his answers but he feared what he would find out he
feared that knowing the truth the truth about Kagome would somehow force him to run or worse
fight her.

Kagome's mother was sitting down at the table to some afternoon tea. "What's wrong Inu Yasha?"
she called out. "Why are you back so soon? And where's Kagome?" obvious worry was in her voice
now. "We need to talk," Inu Yasha replied trying as much as he could to keep himself in check.
"Who was Kagome's father?" The bluntness of the statement almost shocked her, would she have not
had anticipated a time would come where she would have to explain... "Inu Yasha sit down and
have some tea, there is something about Kagome you should know..."

"Its funny really, your heart never tells you exactly who to fall in love with. But, I was no older than
her when I met the love of my life. He came to me in my dreams, and those hours we spent together
as few as they were, were the best times of my life. It pained me so much when he died. But, that
doesn't apply to what I have to tell you. Kagome's father was an Incubus."

"The hell?"

"He was a demon, much like those you know in your era. You see when he and I mated, Kagome
was born a hanyou much like yourself."

Inu Yasha's ears obviously perked up from knowing Kagome was a lot like him. "How come she
showed no visible traits like me?"

"We live at this shrine so the purity of the shrine can keep her demon prowess in check. Like that
sword you wear, how it keeps your demon side under control. But, since she's been away so long she
can no longer contain it."

It pained Inu Yasha to think he would have to destroy her. And his anguish was not unnoticed by
Kagome's mother.

"No! She's not evil, she just wants to be loved. Inu Yasha she's been in love with you. You protect
her, you care for her, you've been by her side. I mean honestly how dense could you be."

Realizing his error. Realizing it was his doubts and fears that always kept him away from her.
"Pretty dense."

"Inu Yasha, if you'll love my daughter I will support you both in any way possible." Her tears
became visible. "Please just don't kill her. She and Souta are all I have left to remind me of their father."

On the other side of the well.

Miroku awoke to a strange demon aura approaching. As he rose he woke Sango and Shippo. "It's
strange I've never sensed this presence before but it seems so familiar," he said confused. Sango
armed herself with her usual weapon of choice. Then Kagome appeared, had sunrise started they
would have noticed her wings, but it was still to dark for them to notice anything odd about her.

"Kagome!" Shippo squealed. "No! Shippo get away from her! Something's wrong with her!" Before
Miroku could further protest Shippo leaped into Kagome's arms and cradled him like he was her
own. Miroku and Sango approached her cautiously, and then there they were it was visible to all of
them. Kagome had wings.

"Kagome is something wrong?" Sango asked with honest concern. "Nothing just Inu Yasha, has run
back to my time." "Uh no insult intended, but you have god damn wings! I don't think Inu Yasha
would wait around to find out why you have those!" Miroku blurted out then flailed his arms to
block any impending hits. None came, Kagome was still cradling the now sleeping Shippo and
smiling looking down at him.

Kagome only slightly irritated used her powers to compel them to return to sleep. "Well if nothing's
wrong I'm going back to sleep," and with that Miroku dropped to his sleeping bag. "Same here, cya
in the morning Kagome," Sango said dozing off. Kagome rose to a perch in a tree with Shippo in
tow. She thought of the inevitable confrontation...

"Inu Yasha it's time. Go to her."

And with that Inu Yasha leaped off through the well. As his hand emerged to pull himself up. He
could feel the dawning sunlight on his hand. There she was waiting for him. Perched in his tree.
Smiling... always smiling...
