Title: Forsaken Mistakes
Chapter One
The cell phone beeped in her ear as she listened to what her mother had to say. Due to be home by four she was pushing it. The groceries were sitting in her backseat as she drove home. Today was Souta's birthday so everything had to be special for the little brat. He wasn't so small anymore but still a brat. The list her mother had given her had been a mile long. No one could eat the food that was being prepared. The only thing that made it worthwhile was knowing she was leaving after the party. She wouldn't call where she was going a date. No it was anything but that.
Six months had passed since that strange incident in the movie theater. It was something she wanted to put behind her. There was no clue to whom the guy was. She didn't care to know. For several days his identity had bothered her. From his statement he'd assumed she was someone else. Which meant she'd helped him cheat on someone. Maybe someone he loved. Knowing how it felt to have the man you loved run off with another woman she sympathized. Yet what could she do now? It was one of those things to leave in the past.
Hojo hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. If he had he didn't speak of it but that was Hojo for you. In her mind she had done him an injustice and cheated. Not intentionally but it had been done. After it sleeping with him had been out of the question. So she'd used the time after to slowly draw away from him. How could she sleep with him knowing what was missing from it. There was really no passion between them, not on her part. Instead of leading him on any longer she'd begun the process of breaking things off. Like in high school the man was deluded about it. When she'd said she needed time he'd taken it rather well. In his mind she was saying cut down on dating time not break up. So he kept coming around as always. At times she debated telling him she'd fucked another man to get him angry for once. Two weeks after the incident she'd ran into someone unexpected. The face and hair was something she wouldn't forget. The pretty male from the theater had bumped into her on the streets. She'd been heading to work sipping on a cup of coffee. The accident had caused it to spill. After swearing enough to make a sailor blush she'd let him apologize for the mishap. He'd suggested that she allow him to replace it. Being short on time she'd declined the offer. So he'd asked her out to dinner instead. Not having any plans she'd agreed. It had also been a chance to be away from Hojo.
Since that day she realized she liked him. He was charming, extremely sweet, good looking but had a brain. Still dating Hojo at the time all she could offer him was friendship. So it had begun for them. Once a week they'd gone out to dinner for two months getting to know each other. Getting rid of Hojo had become a daily task in itself but Kurama was a bright spot in her life. The friendship he'd offered had been lifesaving. He'd asked her about her boyfriend a few times but she'd quickly change the subject. How could she explain to him that the guy had a serious crush on her through high school and now that he'd finally gotten into her panties she couldn't get rid of him. It meant explaining to him why she wanted to ditch him. Saying, 'I screwed some stranger at the movies one night,' didn't sit well with her.
Hojo was still being thorn in her side which hadn't been too big an issue. After knowing Kurama for three months she realized that she had feelings for him. It didn't matter that he had told her how he felt. He wasn't looking for anything serious, no attachments. He claimed to care for her but said he didn't want the commitment. At times she felt the youkai energy coming from him. She knew he wasn't all human but wasn't sure what. Did he know of it? He didn't offer that information and she didn't ask. One night he'd asked her out to a late dinner. She'd happily accepted wanting to spend time with him. That day she'd called Hojo up and told him it was over. It wasn't fair for him to think there was a chance when she knew she was falling for another man.
Hojo being himself didn't take it hard. Instead he asked her if she was feeling well. The route of explaining that she wasn't ready to date seriously had been played. To that he replied she just needed some time alone and that he understood. Then the usual 'when is our next date going to be?' came out. No matter what she tried he didn't seem to get the picture that she was kicking his ass to the curb. That night after dinner she'd agreed to accompany Kurama back to his apartment. There was no doubt what he wanted by the way he'd kept touching her all evening.
When it happened she'd been ready and wanted it. The man was filling the spot in her heart she'd thought long dead. He was an amazing lover and friend. The sex put all those before him to shame. He had ways of making her body shake with pleasure. It was more than just the sex for her. Every morning after she woke up smiling thinking of him. For the first time since returning from the past she felt happy.
Now the only things that bothered her were both men. Kurama made it more than obvious that he'd never want a serious relationship with her. Whenever he introduced her to someone it was just as his friend. In public he treated her as that nothing more. Whenever they did go out together he kept his distance. It made her long for the closeness that came with being a couple. Some nights she wondered if she was making a mistake by giving her heart to him? Would she ever be more than just a fuck buddy? She'd yet to meet any of his close friends or family. Another strike against their relationship or lack of. Plus, she only got to see him on set nights. It almost made her feel like a kept woman. But she knew she couldn't just give him up. The thought of never seeing him again was too much.
Then came Hojo, the constant thorn in her ass. Six months later and he was still hounding her. Kurama never really asked about him, he still thought she was dating the poor guy. He hadn't asked about Hojo in over two months but she wasn't sure as to why. Kagome was at her wits end on how to deal with the man without crushing him. He called her all the time, some when she was with Kurama. The redhead just gave her a sly look but didn't say anything. As far as she was concerned they were no longer a couple but he still assumed as much.
Neither man asked about her feelings which sucked. If so she'd tell Kurama that she was in love with him and tell Hojo to kiss the narrow end of her ass. She thought of telling Kurama her problem with Hojo but refrained from doing so. One night she'd brought him up but before she could tell him about it Kurama had spoken. Saying that they were just friends and didn't care whom she dated. The admission had stung but she hadn't expected him to. Maybe she'd been hoping her lover would knock some sense into her ex. She wouldn't plead her case to him because it would look like she couldn't handle her own affairs. Inuyasha had once told her she couldn't do anything right. Seemed she couldn't dump a man right.
Throwing her problems on Kurama wouldn't be right and he said he didn't care. So she left it at that hoping would day Hojo would take the hint and just stop calling. If she'd actually thought for a second that Kurama cared about her in that way she'd have laid it all down for him. Most men would see her in the wrong for cheating on her boyfriend. He didn't care either way about it so she wasn't about to hash that Hojo wasn't her boyfriend anymore and couldn't take a fucking hint.
Hanging up with her mom she tried to switch over only to find he'd left her a voice message. Pressing the correct keys she listened as she turned the corner. A frown replaced the smile as she listened. He was breaking their plans for this evening. There was no reason given just an apology saying he wouldn't be home and that he'd call her in a few days. It so unlike him to do it. Even if she didn't get to see him everyday, they spoke on the phone at least once a day. Looked like shoveling down cake and ice cream would have to appease her mood.
Kurama cursed as he hung up the phone ignoring the stares he was receiving. The timing was so wrong for this shit. He didn't have to go but didn't want to risk anyone showing up while Kagome was over. A little over three years had passed since the first Makai tournament. The plans for the next were already underway. Hiei had come with a request from not only Yomi but Mukuro for him and Yusuke to head into the Makai as soon as possible. Which meant now in youkai terms. Of all the days in which Yomi could have summoned him. He wasn't under any order to go, he owed Yomi nothing. But the tense way Hiei had been standing since entering the room didn't bode well. Something was up if they'd sent him.
Yusuke was sitting on the edge of his bed flipping through a book. He frowned seeing it was actually one of Kagome's books that she'd left over. She liked to read while he did some of his work at home. The girl was an enigma to him at times. One he didn't want to share with any of his friends yet, especially Yusuke. He'd easily found her the next day after the incident. Finding her at a shrine had been strange. He couldn't sense anything coming from her so it had to be a family shrine. Inherited through out the years. No one was that much into religion anymore. Houshi had long since died out years ago, no one believed or practiced their ways no more. For two weeks he'd debated if he should approach her watching her from afar. Being able to get a better look at her he was glad he'd searched her out. She was indeed beautiful, smart and entertaining. Those large blue eyes had a way of making him wish he could lose himself in everything that was Kagome. The day he'd bumped into her on the streets had been intentional. It had started the beginning of their friendship, if one would call it that. The were good friends everywhere except in bed. What he did with her he'd never consider doing with Keiko or Shizuru.
It bothered him that she was still seeing the male from the theater. Knowing she was still dating the man while coming freely to his bed didn't sit well. At times he'd seen the girl glance at the ringing phone and ignore it. Of course she couldn't answer it, not in his company. It reeked of guilt to him, she was stringing the other guy along. One reason he'd stated that he didn't want a relationship with her. Tossing his desire and her personality, he couldn't himself to a woman that was incapable of being faithful. If he ever settled down with a woman it would be like his human mother. Soft, gentle and kind but believed in having only one lover. He wasn't sure how many Kagome had. She came to him once a week so he had no way of telling. A good enough bath would wash away all the traces of another male. Unless he reverted back into his youkai form which he wasn't about to do. She didn't know of that side of existence, he wouldn't introduce her to it. Not when there was no telling how long it would be before she moved onto the next man.
Taking her to bed hadn't been part of the plan. She'd merely stirred his curiosity and he wanted to make sure nothing came from Yusuke's mistake. He should have known a female that would sleep with a stranger in a dark theater would be prepared to prevent such things. Yusuke had been right about her, too right. She was very responsive to his touch and he to hers. If it weren't for the side of her personality he'd be more than happy to propose a steadier relationship. But true to form she seemed pleased with their current arrangement. They kept in touch during the week on a friendly basis except for the one night she'd spend with him. Those nights made him long for more.
Yusuke saw the way the fox was glaring at him and frowned. "I didn't take you for the type to read romance novels Kurama. Is there something you aren't telling us?" He hated these books, Keiko left them everywhere. His relationship with her was still going strong. She still didn't know of his mistake that night. Kurama had been kept it to himself. He was just glad the fox was his friend and not Keiko's first. The last thing he wanted was to lose the woman he loved more than anything. She wasn't his dream girl but she'd stuck by him through everything.
"It doesn't belong to me." Kurama took the book from his hands. Maybe he was being silly in his anger but he didn't want Yusuke to even touch the girl's book. If they ever did happen to meet they wouldn't know who the other was. The only one to know they had already slept together was him. It was something that constantly burned in the back of his mind. Part of him was scared that it had happened because of the undeniable attraction some people have. It might be possible that they might come to like each other in the long run. There was no doubt they'd enjoy the more pleasurable peaks together. He didn't want to take that chance with her. Besides Kagome had yet to ask to meet his friends. Or had she shown any interest in meeting his family. He was just another one of her male partners.
"You went and got a girlfriend Kurama? When do we get to meet her?" Yusuke smiled when his face fell. So he did have one and was keeping it a secret. "We are your friends, we get to pass judgment. Right Hiei?" The Detective glanced over to the hybrid leaning against the window. A short grunt was his only answer, so he pried again. He was curious as to what female would have caught the fox's attention. He'd never seen the boy with anyone. "So who is she Kurama?"
"Who cares who she is. I for one, do not. Let Kurama fuck whom he will Detective. You didn't ask our permission before jumping between Keiko's legs." Hiei hoped that would shut him up for now. The fool was too blind to notice the way Kurama's shoulders had tensed in anger. Obviously Kurama didn't want to talk about his female friend. A youkai's sex life was meant to be a private affair, not broad casted like these humans tended to do. "I think we should leave now before dusk falls. Yomi and Mukuro are waiting for us at Gandara."
Kurama was thankful for the small save from the koorime. How could he explain to Yusuke why he didn't want to share the girl in his life? Most would assume because he was ashamed of the relationship. It wasn't that he just didn't want to risk losing her to his friend. If for one second he could hope that she cared about him or even felt the smallest amount of love for him. Then it wouldn't bother him to parade her in front of the others. Yet it wasn't that way. "Let's go."
They all lounged around the small room. It made Kurama feel like a band of rebels meeting in secret. Jin and the others had just shown up to take part in the meeting. Everyone had already said their hellos after being away for a few years. He had to frown when he noticed that Chuu was sober. His face was etched with worry lines along with Touya's. Seemed something had been happening in the Makai since he'd left. The last he'd heard from Yomi the man had been taking Shura on a trip of self discovery. The boy had grown a few inches but his attitude was much the same. "Why have we been called here?"
"Something the matter Kurama. I have never known you to be this anxious before." Yomi leaned back into the chair and crossed his legs. Placing his hands in front of himself, he wondered just where to begin. He supposed since the last time they'd all seen each other. "Here's the deal the next tournament is coming up and we have a major concern. There is a new youkai running around, I've never heard of him until last year. A few of my informants have but are confused about what's going on. This man goes by the name of Byakuya. Up until last year he was nothing more than an C class rank. Now his power surpasses that of all of us combined. Don't scowl Hiei, you've felt it yourself. Which is the only reason I'm sure you bothered to show up here today. The power coming from him is unbelievable. There is rumor of him having a sacred object which gives him the power he now possesses. The few of us that are over five centuries old all know the tale of the Shikon Jewel. Rumors say that it's the jewel at work. If so then we will soon have a serious problem on our hands."
Mukuro recalled the tale herself, she herself having gone after it at one time. "It isn't just a legend, I once went after it on my climb to the top. Over five centuries ago it was in the Ningenkai protected by a very powerful miko by the name of Kikyou. I still remember the woman's smug smile as she almost killed me. It was said she was killed by her lover over the jewel, then had it cremated with her body. It was her way of keeping it out of evil hands. Then fifty years later it came again along with another miko, this one said to be the true guardian. A great battle was fought over it, the miko winning in the end. Many say she perished soon after along with the jewel."
"You see it could grant it's holder immense power having contained the soul of a youkai and a miko." Yomi waited for the younger ones to digest the information. Kurama didn't look interested having heard of it already. "If this youkai has it then he will no doubt try to gain control of the Makai. Mukuro and I have conversed with Enki over the matter and he agrees with us. We can not allow him to use that power to take over."
"So why can't you guys just go and steal the jewel from him?" Yusuke didn't see what the problem was. Send a team of fighters in to kick his ass and steal the damn thing back. He'd be willing to go if he knew Keiko wouldn't ream his ass for fighting again. It was on of his promises to her. Getting involved in another case wasn't possible. "I'd like to help but unless it interferes with the Ningenkai or my personal life I can't."
"I understand your concern Yomi." Kurama had to agree with Yusuke to some extent. "Youkai have been fighting over that thing for so long. One can only guess how he managed to get his hands on it. What you don't want to tell them is that you can't do what Yusuke has suggested. A main problem is if the youkai is skilled enough he can hide the location of the jewel. None of us being connected to the jewel; will be able to pinpoint it's exact location. We can tear him apart as we saw fit or even blow him apart but without the location of the jewel his body will just regenerate at a fast pace. As long as it's hidden the man will be indestructible at least by us. The only way to find it would be through the means of a miko strong enough. I'm willing to bet the last one capable of doing such as task died over five hundred years ago. If you choose to fight him you are going into a losing battle unless luck is on your side."
"Once again you are correct Kurama. We sent someone to inform Koenma of the situation as we speak. I don't know if the Reikai will get involved or not. My men have entered the Ningenkai to try and track down someone that might be of any help. Needless to say they came back empty handed and we are running out of options. The next tournament will begin in three weeks. This guy is very cunning. Instead of starting a war and fighting for control. He's simply going to destroy those that oppose him in the ring. Then smile as we basically hand it over to him." Yomi frowned when Kurama shrugged his shoulders. What had gotten into his old friend? His mind seemed distracted and far away.
"Unless we can find someone there is nothing we can do but wait for the tournament and hope for the best." Touya chose to speak up now. He was old enough to know of it but had never seen it. Though he'd felt the immense power that had suddenly filled the Makai. It was enough to send chills of dread down his spine. The feeling of doom clung to his soul. Were they all about to be damned?
Kagome threw the dirty plate into the trash. She'd eaten way too much cake. Her rear was tingling; she wasn't sure if it was from all the sitting or her ass spreading. All the guests were heading out the door as the party came to a close. Not only had all of Souta's many friends had shown up but some of the parents as well. The event had lifted Gramps spirits. Of course he wasn't the one having to clean up the mess left behind. Not wanting to leave it until the morning she grabbed another to toss it into the large plastic bag strapped to her side. It was a good thing Kurama had canceled their evening. She wouldn't have gotten to his place until after midnight at this rate. The young teenage kids had taken food and drink outside only to leave the leftovers laying around. Nice of them to feed the ant population.
She would have preferred to spend the evening wrapped in Kurama's arms. Instead of sex she had trash duty. Not to mention dish duty, vacuum duty and bathroom duty. Even after hitting puberty the boys still didn't know how to lift up a toilet seat. She grimaced while picking up a plate of mashed food from the ground. "Disgusting little twerps."
Soft meowing caught her attention. The first image to come to mind was Buyo laying on the ground with a swollen gut unable to move. Let him roll into the house for all she cared. Would serve him right for begging food from the kids. He reminded her of Inuyasha, he'd eat until he'd fall back from the load. Something brushed against her legs and she looked down. The fat cat began purring as she bent down to give him a quick pet. "Did you eat too much?"
The answer came from her right and behind the well house. The cat between her legs stared at the wooden building also. She was almost scared to go check it out remembering the last time she'd gone to fetch a cat from the well house. The only thing that gave her solace was knowing that it was coming from behind the structure. Had someone tossed their animal out? It was darker behind the there so she called out before going all the way back. "Here kitty."
She stumbled back as it sprang from behind the back to land directly in front of her. "Kirara?!" The small neko made a small noise before bounding forward in haste. Reaching arms out Kagome welcomed the feline. Feeling the familiar fur rubbing against her arms brought tears. What was she doing there and how? The well no longer worked for her. None of the others had been able to travel through but Inuyasha. The neko was indeed in her embrace, licking her like a bone. Seemed she'd been missed as well. "How did you get here?"
Large red eyes looked up in answer. Kagome noticed something wrapped around her neck. It was small wooden tube wrapped in wards. Taking it from the neko she proceeded to walk over to one of the chairs. "I'm guessing you didn't come through the well girl. So that only leaves one option. Good to see you survived the last few centuries. What did you bring me?"
Pealing off the ward she felt the magic respond. There was a tiny peace of parchment stuffed inside. Removing it using her pinky she sat the neko in her lap as she took her own seat. The paper was only slightly aged due to the magic container it had been stored in. The writing wasn't anyone's she knew but decided to read it anyways. "Kagome, due to Inuyasha's inability to read or write I've taken it upon myself to do so. You disappeared so suddenly we never got a chance to see you off. It has been forty years since your departure from us. Sango and I married to eventually raise a large family. We believe unknown to you the wish you'd made had a strange side effect. Not only was Kikyou restored but Inuyasha was turned human. Kikyou and he have lived the past years in happiness. Shippou has finally left us now that Sango and Kikyou both have departed from this world. Their lives were happy ones. The kit we all loved and adored has went to live among Kouga and his clan. Hopefully, he will grow strong and arrogant. We have no means of delivering this to you for our lives are also short. So I have instructed this into Kirara's safe keeping until the day she finds you again. We thank you for everything and all that you've done. Inuyasha says to send his love and that he misses you dearly, Miroku."
The neko reached up to sniff the girl's face as the scent of salt filled the air. The girl embraced her tight as the tears continued to fall in earnest. It had taken her a long time to find the missing miko. Being shoved into the Makai hadn't helped the search. Once the barrier had been dropped she'd waited to make sure not to impede in the girl's travels. Seeing the few extra years on the girl's face said she'd timed it perfectly. The found now laying discarded on the ground was an extra bonus. Jumping down suddenly she ran towards a piece of grilled meat near. It was a little on the burnt side but would do nicely. Taking her first bite she stopped hearing a small growl coming from beneath the girls chair.
Kagome looked up at the growl to see Kirara about to have dinner. Buyo growled again at the intruder not wanting to share the feast. Laughter filled the air as Kirara transformed baring fangs at her cat. A screeching noise was heard before a fat fuzz ball took off running into the house. "Serves him right for being stingy when there's enough for both of you." Her eyes scanned the neko who hadn't changed a day. The advantage of being a youkai. Wiping the tears from her cheek she wondered what to do with the new addition. She couldn't send her away. If anything Kirara was her link to the past. Receiving the letter had done her heart some good. So the wish had turned Inuyasha human. Shippou had gone to live with Kouga? Did that mean it was possible for those two to still be alive?
Tucking the parchment back into the tube, it was stuffed into her shirt pocket. Going back to cleaning up the mess she kept an eye on the neko. Kirara was helping clean up in her own way. The two tails swished back and forth as she found the things she wanted. Looking up into the night sky she couldn't help but wonder where Kurama had gone off to? Was it his way of slowly ending things with her? Would she have to wait to next week to see him? Or would he call as soon as he returned? Going so long without speaking to him would be tough. Would she be able to continue her life as she had been with the neko on board. In the past she'd gone everywhere with them. Would Kirara expect the same treatment here? Letting her go flying around the city was not an option.
The last bit of trash discarded she went to stacking the chairs. Souta came running out to hand her the phone. He paused seeing the large cat licking it's mouth. "Uh, Kagome?" Kirara just stared at him without blinking. The twin tails still moving vigorously behind her.
"It's okay, that's Kirara. She's friendly enough. Who's on the phone?" He extended his hand keeping an eye for any movement from her. Kagome grinned seeing while he was scared he was also wanting to play with the cat. "It's okay you can pet her."
She placed the receiver to her ear and spoke into the phone. Knowing it wasn't Kurama because he only called her personal phone. Hojo's voice cheerfully greeted her. He went on explaining that he'd called to wish Souta a happy birthday. She knew it had just been an excuse to call and bug her. Replying curtly she waited for him to get to the point. When he asked her to another movie this friday she'd declined almost snapping at him. Months of rejection should have gotten the point across. The boy was worse than Kouga. "Look I'm busy at the moment I'll have to talk to you later."
Souta watched her hang up on the guy and laughed. Even he felt sorry for his sister. The man was a big pain in the ass. They hadn't gone out in months so why did he insist on trying? He was glad that his sister wasn't with him. She needed someone better, Hojo wasn't the one to make her happy. He'd been there to see her mourn the loss of Inuyasha and all her friends. His sister was smiling again and it wasn't due to the dork's doing. He'd walked into her room one day while she'd been in the shower hearing her cell ring. Picking up the phone the name Kurama had shown up. They hadn't met the guy yet but she was always talking to him and disappeared once a week over night. He knew she was getting some sex from the man. It had to be better than with Hojo because she had taken up the habit of singing in the shower. "Can we keep her Sis?"
