The lights were dazzling, brilliant flashes of color against a drop black sky. The aging theatre had once again been transformed into a magical gateway to adventures beyond. The rain had paused, it seemed to honor the occasion, though the clouds curled and gathered overhead, hiding the face of the moon. A true demon's night. Sesshoumaru stood on the high rooftop terrace, empty now save himself and Youko. But soon enough demons and mortals alike would perch upon the comfortable divans and beneath the gauzy canopies. They would gather around the inviting fire pits and drink the finest wines and liqueurs, nibbling on savory foods from both realms. Odd how some humans liked demon fare. Just beyond his shoulder was an enclosed porch and there within here several pillowed platforms, that could be closed off for further privacy. It required no imagination to guess what would occur there. In those quiet places and deeper shadows, demons would sup on the mortals, a mouthful of blood at a time. Not enough to harm, not seriously. Others, who fed off sexual energies would also find their prey there, or perhaps only passing amusement. A high wall divided the inner courtyard from the crowded street, closing in on a lush garden, more than half of it artificial, blinking and glimmering with artificial fireflies. The effect however was more than acceptable and starry eyed or plain drunken fools could walk in that tiny forest and be lost in that tiny scrap of magic. Already they clamored and shifted at the large doors, eager to gain entrance to the court of the inhuman. Some were dressed in silks and jewels, some dressed as demons or fae, some Sesshoumaru wasn't sure what they were dressed as, if you could call them dressed at all. He fought the urge to roll his eyes at their antics. Youko was not so reserved, "What the hell is that?" he asked peering down at a woman who appeared to be clad in nothing more than paint and piercings. "I am certain you shall find out" Sesshoumaru replied, "I will search the north side for Delno". Youko nodded, "I'll take the south then, meet in the middle and go to council". Sesshoumaru nodded and turned to vanish into the lingering dark of the stairs. His hand settled on the hilt of his Tenseiga, one night a year he was able to carry the sword at his hip and don the white silks he favored. It was like a touchstone now, his hilt. From the corner of his eye a small movement was detected. "What is it miko?" he asked, waiting for the young woman to come into the open. She could not meet his eyes, but bowed low, holding her hand out to him. "Shiziru-sama has asked that I deliver this to you my lord" she whispered, holding a small envelope out to him. Elegant fingers closed over the paper, claws not touching the pink palm. "You may go miko". She was gone as swiftly and silently as she had come, leaving only the faint scent of ozone in the air behind her, a testament to her growing powers. Sesshoumaru slid one lethal claw beneath the waxen circle and scanned the missive carefully. The writing was hers, and it seemed that she was concerned over not only Delno but a member of the Alliance as well. Someone was playing both sides and Sesshoumaru was nearly certain he knew who it was. Curling his fingers around the note, he allowed his poison to seep forth, obliterating the paper until nothing remained but noxious vapor. Riding on the wind, was the hint of power that was Youko, and he allowed his own to unfurl fractionally allowing his presence to be felt and known among the demons below. His very presence was enough to keep most of the rabble in line. Most, but not all. How times had changed. A collective hush fell over the theatre, within and without as the large double doors slowly moved inward and then were flung wide. Humans flooded through the entrance in swirls of color and overpowering scents. Sweat, pheromones, colognes and sharp perfumes that attacked delicate youkai noses. Then the soft hum of the air flow system reached his pointed ears and the rush of air and the scents were dulled to a tolerable level. Yet another precaution taken by the Keeper. Youkai were dangerous on any given day, make one nose blind and you were asking for bloodshed. Most youkai relied on their noses more than their eyes as it was. Eyes could deceive you, but a nose never lied. Humans followed the music though richly appointed halls to the wide stage and empty floor. There on the stage a once human man stood, elegantly attired in jerkin and velvet doublet, his long golden hair caught at the nape and his blue-green eyes sparkled with merriment. Upon seeing him, all fell silent. “Welcome lords and ladies to the most magical night of the year. The night when the mists between realms part and all creatures play”, his tone was smooth, cultured and sent many a female’s heart a flutter. Purposely of course. “Have a care my friends as you walk in this enchanted place for some creatures are darker than others. Enjoy one and all!”. Thunderous applause met him and he bowed, a courtly, chivalrous gesture, his arms spread wide. A veiled warning of a very real threat, too bad the fools would not know that. As the music began and mortals took to the floor, Sesshoumaru felt the telltale pulse of power. The summoning of the remaining cardinal youkai lords and mikos to gather in the secret chamber for council. With graceful moves he swept through the crowds, ignoring the adoring looks cast his way. Through the halls and down into the arms of the earth he went, the roughhewn corridors lit by lamps and just ahead the wide iron doors leading to the hallowed heart of the Alliance. A miko and youkai waited there, symbolic of the equality of the peoples. They bowed to him and pushed the doors wide. Sesshoumaru stepped over the threshold pausing to incline his head to his peers. They rose and bowed to him as he made his way across the marble floor and took his place among them. Youko appeared a few moments later and Shiziru called them to order. The usual items were discussed, the status of each lord’s domain given. The accounting of mikos was given as well. A system of checks and balance existed between them and in this way they kept peace. Children were asked after and tales exchanged. Pleasantries concluded, Shiziru raised her hand, “I fear that not all matters before us are happy ones” she announced, her voice tired, her age evident. “Delno is active again and blatant as ever”. A younger miko hurried to provide files to each cardinal. Flipping through them, they found the photos of a young woman, dressed as a miko, in a pool of blood. “He has attacked two shrine maidens viciously, the last survived long enough to name him” she went on. The tigress beside Sesshoumaru rumbled low in her throat, “Kill him” she said bluntly. Youko shook his head, “Won’t work” he told her, “We know that he does not operate alone but not all of his supporters are known to us..yet”. She nodded her understanding. A grizzled boar scoffed, “If there is any evidence against him, surely our great champions would have found it by now”. He chuckled at his own joke and slapped his knee. Sesshoumaru lifted one elegant brow, “Perhaps Ryoka, you fear to see to such matters on your own that you rely too heavily on the champions”. The Champions being himself, Youko, the deer youkai Walsa and three priestesses. They were charged with the execution of the decisions of the Alliance. Over the centuries, they had slain many youkai and humans alike to preserve peace. It was not a duty to be envied. Ryoka sputtered, “You insult me! Do you challenge me then?” he demanded. Sesshoumaru leaned back in his chain unconcerned with the pig’s outburst, “The question Ryoka is… do you challenge me?”. His voice like an icy whip in the stillness. Shiziru was about to ask what was happening, but Youko covered her hand with his own. Ryoka’s beady black eyes darted about the room. How could he answer without losing face or his life? He met Sesshoumaru’s eyes for only a moment and knew. In that instant, he knew without a doubt, that the dog lord knew. Knew he was hiding something. Sesshoumaru watched his pallor go white and smirked, “Why so pale Ryoka? Perhaps you should tell the others what I already know” he pressed. The others looked on in question. Ryoka sensing a very messy end closing in on him, jumped to his feet, “This is foolish” he retorted, “I have no idea what you are talking about. Lies and suspicion!” Golden eyes narrowed to slits, and Sesshoumaru shifted ever so slightly, “Are you calling this Sesshoumaru a liar?” he asked softly. The pig falling nicely into his little trap. Ryoka grunted in fear, “What?”. Sesshoumaru rose to his feet, towering over the cowering youkai. “Tell them that you have been aiding Delno all this time, given him support, hidden him away, not reported his crimes in your domain. Or tell them that this Sesshoumaru lies so that I may kill you anyway”. The tigress snarled, “Aiding him? You’ve been covering his crimes and risking our very world?” she demanded angrily, green-gold eyes flashing like sunlight on leaves. Ryoka stiffened, the scent of his fear clogging the air around them. He shook his head, “No…no, it wasn’t like that” he attempted but the stench of deceit rose around him. Sesshoumaru didn’t even blink as his nails began to glow an eerie green and then with a sharp motion of his wrist, he sent his youki snapping outward like a whip and cracked the trembling boar in two. The strangled cries giving way as his remains turned to dust under Sesshoumaru’s powerful blow. Shiziru half rose from her seat, her mouth open wide. She had sent Sesshoumaru to kill before, but had never actually witnessed it. “He was the one?” she asked. Sesshoumaru resumed his seat, tucking his long silver hair behind one elven ear, “Not the only one miko” he replied, “Now tell me of this guest who commands such attention from you”. She blinked at the change in topics but nodded as she sank into her seat. “A mortal” she replied, “A strange mortal with the powers of a priestess but none of the limits. She does not even know what she is or what she is capable of, but the power within her calls to youkai and I fear that she may become a target herself. I have invited her here to the ball”. Sesshoumaru nodded, the woman was most likely correct, “Where is she? What does she look like?” he asked. Shiziru shrugged, “I have no idea, but you will know her when you see her. I charge the cardinals with finding her and securing her safety until Delno can be dealt with properly”. "If she is here then she is already in danger" Youko pointed out, wondering at the woman's actions. Shiziru smiled softly as a sudden surge of power filled the room, "She has come, she has crossed the wards" she announced. Sesshoumaru rose from his seat, Youko beside him, "So be it".While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
