Blank: Chapter Two – Q &
A
The young woman tensed
involuntarily as the girl stood, looking ready to launch. A sharp intake of breath was all that
betrayed the pain that shot through her at just tensing, but she saw at once
that Sesshoumaru had noticed.
And then the little girl was in the
air, a deliriously happy grin on her face, flying towards her and she knew this
was going to hurt. Still, a part of her warmed to know that this
child was so ecstatic to see her, and she felt her own face bloom into a full
smile, even as she braced herself for the pain.
The girl hung suspended, and the
young woman wondered if this was what it was like to have time slow down when
anticipating extreme agony. She blinked
stupidly and then realized that, no, the little girl actually was being held suspended in the air by
none other than her host. She glanced at
him gratefully, wondering how much pain he had just saved her. He was regarding her coolly, his face
unreadable.
“Rin,” he said. Oh, he
really does have a very nice voice, she thought. Isn’t
there anything about him that isn’t pretty?
Well, besides his attitude.
“I warned you that you must be careful around the miko until she
recovers.”
The girl looked crestfallen,
contrite but still joyful, all at once. How do so many emotions fit on one little
face? the young woman wondered. “Rin
forgot, Sesshoumaru-sama! Rin won’t
forget again!”
The youkai lord set her down
gently, and the small child immediately flopped into a kneeling position just
by the young woman’s head. Tentatively,
the girl reached forward and brushed some strands of dark hair away from the miko’s face gently.
“Rin is so happy that
Kagome-nee-chan is awake!” the girl said excitedly.
The young woman smiled at her, and
replied, “Hello, Rin-chan.” This is Rin, she thought. I don’t
know this girl. And I…I am…Kagome. Ka-go-me.
She turned her name over and over in her head, getting used to the feel
of it. It was a nice enough name, but it
was meaningless to her. I am Kagome. There was no familiarity to it at all. Her name could have just as easily been Matsuko
or Kazumi or Jane.
She became vaguely aware of the
fact that the girl…Rin, she corrected
herself, had been prattling nonstop. The
young woman turned her attention to her and realized that she was just
chattering, completely oblivious to the fact that Kagome hadn’t been listening.
“…and then Jaken fell over and Rin
laughed and laughed and even Sesshoumaru-sama thought it was funny and then
when he stood up he had mud on his face and the brown and green look funny
together when the mud is running off the green skin and he glared at Rin but
Rin knows Sesshoumaru-sama will never let anything bad happen to her so …”
A slight headache bloomed behind
Kagome’s eyes. It wasn’t that she didn’t
like Rin – in fact, she thought she would normally by delighted by the little
girl, but it was a bit much. Almost as if he sensed her distress, her
host’s deep voice cut across the young girl’s story.
“Rin,” Sesshoumaru said. She immediately stopped talking and looked up
at the daiyoukai with adoration. “You
are satisfied that the miko will not die, yes?
Go fetch her something to eat. Something
simple like…” he paused a moment, and frowned slightly.
“Soup?” Rin supplied.
The frown disappeared, and he
nodded. With a casual, “Yes,
Sesshoumaru-sama!” the girl scampered out of the room, and the young woman did
not miss the look of gentleness and protection that briefly flared across his
golden eyes. Kagome filed away that little bit of information to be
pondered upon later. Part of her
wondered, suddenly, if he had sensed how tired she was and had sent the girl
away to spare her. His next words almost
confirmed that suspicion.
“You will eat when Rin returns,
then you will sleep. You have much
healing to do.”
Kagome frowned. There were so many questions she needed to
ask (WHO AM I?), but she was
exhausted and she hurt. Yet she felt bad
for another reason. This little girl
obviously cared for her, loved her even, and she couldn’t remember her. It was almost as if just the thought of Rin
summoned her, because she came through the shoji doors right then, gracefully
balancing a tray topped with a bowl and a spoon.
The child then proceeded to feed
her, since the miko was clearly incapable of lifting the spoon herself. The soup was good, Kagome discovered, hot and thick and filling, a miso broth with some small bits of tofu floating in it. It hurt a bit to chew, but the tofu was soft
enough that she could just kind of squish it in her mouth, and very soon she
felt warm and full and quite a bit better.
Rin talked nonstop the entire time,
mostly about Jaken and/or Sesshoumaru.
Kagome was able to figure out that Jaken was the lord’s retainer, but
she couldn’t remember him, of course.
However, there was something so…comforting about it all. She supposed that some people would be
embarrassed to be hand fed by a nine year old girl, but she was so sweet, so
warm and caring, and when she looked at the miko her eyes were filled with love
and trust.
Finally the meal was done, and
Sesshoumaru once again sent Rin from the room.
The little girl paused at the door, casting one more look in Kagome’s
direction, before flouncing off. It was
then that the miko realized that the child was worried about her, very worried
about her. She was so bright and sunny
that worry didn’t seem to fit…
“I almost died, didn’t I?”
Sesshoumaru gazed at her for several
long moments before he nodded.
“I need to ask you,” Kagome
began. He eyed her coolly, before
nodding his head once.
“One question,” he replied. “Then you must rest.”
She hesitated, chewing her thoughts
carefully. Who am I, who are you, did you save me, why did you save me, what am I
doing here, what are we to each other, what do you want from me…these
questions and countless others spiraled through her head, but her thoughts kept
returning to the sweet little girl.
“Is Rin-chan my sister?” Kagome asked.
Again, surprise flashed across his
eyes (I’m pretty good at that, at least,
she thought, congratulating herself), before he shook his head.
“Rin is my ward. You are not related.”
Disappointment threaded through
her. Her world consisted of two people –
one was cold and thought she was a bug, the other was warm and thought she hung
the moon. It would have been nice to be
more closely related to the warm one.
And the familiarity with which the girl treated her, the sincerity and
love…Kagome had been sure that they were sisters or cousins or the like.
“Rin is that way with
everyone. She loves indiscriminately,”
Sesshoumaru offered, his voice deceptively neutral. “But…she does seem to hold a special
affection for you.”
Now it was Kagome’s turn to be
surprised. Was he trying…to comfort her? She wasn’t sure, but it almost seemed like he
was. His eyes were carefully blank, so
no help there. Still, she couldn’t shake
the feeling that he was being considerate of her and her feelings. She just didn’t know what to make of him, and
her eye was starting to hurt in its socket.
“Sleep, now,” the youkai said, in a
voice that brooked no disobedience. The
miko nodded very, very slightly, her eye drifting closed. She felt safe enough for now, and even if there
were many, many questions that needed answering, she wasn’t sure she’d even be
able to handle the answers to them right now.
Within moments, she was lost again to unconsciousness, although at least
this time she slept instead of lying in a comatose state as she had been
earlier.
Sesshoumaru, Demon Lord of the
Western Lands, stayed by her for quite a long while, contemplating his strange
new charge.

When she woke again the sunlight was
just breaking over the dawn horizon, and she realized with a start that she had
slept straight through from the day before.
Her stomach was a whistling hole, and she sat up without thinking about
it.
It hurt. But it hadn’t hurt. And both of her eyes
had opened this time, upon her second waking.
She was healing…fast. Faster than
she thought people normally did.
Her eyes immediately sought out the
girl where she lay sprawled in an untidy heap again, snoring lightly. Her host was there as well, in exactly the
same position she had seen him last, sitting and gazing upon her as if she were
a specimen under a microscope. They don’t have microscopes now, she
thought to herself, and frowned. What
exactly did that mean? She knew exactly what a microscope was, she
could even picture one in her mind, and yet she knew with certainty that
neither her host nor the little girl nor anyone else she could possibly talk to
around here would have the foggiest idea of what a microscope was. Kagome’s frown deepened,
and she let out a little growl of frustration.
Sesshoumaru waited quietly for the
woman to gather herself. Her eyes hadn’t
shown any more recognition this morning than they had yesterday afternoon, and
he gave a mental sigh. Her memory had
not returned.
He’d had a lot of time to
contemplate their situation while she’d been unconscious. He had taken her from that last battle
because of the immense power she had unleashed, knowing that she would be a
powerful ally once he had tracked down his quarry again. Possibly, he’d taken her because he had
always found her intriguing. He
definitely had not taken her because
she had looked so small and helpless in the aftermath, curled on the scorched battlefield
while their hated enemy fled. No, that
definitely hadn’t had anything to do with it.
Plus, it wasn’t like this was the
first time he had saved her.
She’d remained completely
unconscious since the end of the battle, now four days past. It had been a surprise when she’d woken
yesterday – he hadn’t even been sure if she would
wake, but she’d healed quickly, much more quickly than any human should. This new power within her, this sudden
realization of her full potential – it could definitely complicate matters, especially
since her memory seemed to have been completely erased.
She turned her dark blue eyes to
him, regarding him with no fear. Well,
at least that hadn’t changed.
The miko had been a constant source
of surprises for him ever since she had entered his life two years ago. She would sometimes flit across his mind,
often as just a brief image or a short snippet of memory. Her hand curling around the hilt of Tessaiga as she pulled it from his father’s tomb, her eyes
alight with fear and fury as she refused to back down from him, her expression
concerned and anxious when he had been enveloped by the Kaze
no Kizu, the tender way she had looked at Rin when
the little girl had run off to rejoin him.
The woman was nothing if not interesting.
The silence stretched between them,
almost a living, tangible thing. Kagome
had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from breaking it. She didn’t know why, but it was important to
her that he spoke first. She didn’t
particularly like being examined while she slept, and she also felt uneasy
around this demon. He was powerful (I am too, her mind whispered), but she was
already disadvantaged enough without her memory. She wasn’t about to start spouting off
questions that he may or may not answer.
Finally, he spoke. He had been debating his words since
yesterday, but he vaguely remembered hearing once that someone with amnesia
could sometimes be shocked out of it. He
hadn’t fully decided if it would be better for her to remember her past or not,
but if they were to become allies, it would be better if she trusted him. Plus, a tiny part of him insisted that she
deserved to know what was going on.
“Inuyasha was killed by
Naraku.” He paused, gauging her
reaction.
She blinked slowly at him, and her
brows furrowed.
“Who is Naraku?” she asked. Almost as an afterthought, she continued,
“And who is Inuyasha?”

A/N: I am trying to stay within the
bounds of the characters as much as possible, but they will necessarily bend
from canon a bit. I’ll try to explain
their reasoning (eventually) when they do stray from the path. Unfortunately, the way this story is shaping
up, I do feel there will be some OOCness, but I’ll
try to keep it under control. Sess isn’t going to really sprout fairy wing, I
promise! But fair
warning for future reference.
Although I suppose the whole point
of alternative pairings in fanfics is OOCness. Don’t worry, I’m not going to have anyone do anything wonky.
Also, if I get a little wacky with
Japanese terms, I’ll post them at the bottom of the story. Sometimes I go a little research happy and
get very technical over customs, clothing, culture, etc. If I had to research it, I’ll stick it in an
end a/n.
Finally, a
personal note. You now have the
entire reason I am writing Blank before you.
No, really. I was thinking about
how, in so many fanfics, Kagome often pronounces her
name to someone like she did when she first met Inuyasha, Ka-go-me, with an
emphasis on every syllable. Then I
thought to myself, “Self, how can I work that into a story in a way I haven’t
seen before?” Behold, the result of my
late night musing. I ought to sleep more.
