Kagome crawled out of the well into the Sengoku Jedia just before lunch. She ran all the way to Keades’ village and was met by Shippo
half way to her destination. She barely had time to brace herself when she saw
a ball of red and orange fur come zooming towards her. At the very last moment
she stepped to the side and caught Shippo like she
would a foot ball. Kagome laughed and hugged Shippo
to her as he cried out her name.
“Jeez Shippo, I was only gone a day.” Kagome said as she placed
him on the back of her head with his feet on either shoulder. Shippo had gained in size over the years and was unable to
just perch on her shoulder since he was too heavy and it caused her to get a
kink in her neck from holding her head to one side. Instead they came up with
him just straddling both shoulders while latching onto clumps of her hair for
balance. Shippo quite liked the position… it made him
feel tall.
“Where are the others Shippo?”
Kagome asks as they continued down the well worn path towards Keades'.
“Sango and Miroku
are at Keades', Inuyasha
hasn’t returned yet, and Kouga and his pack are
resting on the edge of the village. Apparently the village chief has offered to
give them a spot of land for them to build a temporary hut.”
“Oh, really? Did Kouga except?” Kagome asked.
“He and Ayami talked about it for a bit and said that it
was much appreciated, and as a way of thanks they have offered to help a young
couple in the village who have just been married to build their own hut.” Shippo orated with wide eyes. “Hey Kagome, isn’t it
something how different Keades’ village is with the
way it reacts to demons than most of the other villages we’ve been to? It’s a
wonder they are so ready to except demons, it’s not like the village has been
kept all that separate of demon attacks, what with the Shikon
Jewel residing here most of the time.”
“Hmm Shippo, I think it has a lot
to do with you and Inuyasha.” Kagome replied when he
paused for breath. “You two have shown the people in the village that not all
demons are monsters, and that humans and demons really can live together in
peace. Just think Shippo, you have taken part in
forming something extraordinary, it is not every day that something like this
occurs.” Kagome said with a backward pat on Shippos'
back.
Shippo was quiet for a bit, lost in the realization that he had
indeed made a difference in something as big as a whole village. “Wow.” It was
all he could get out causing his world to vibrate slightly as Kagomes’ shoulders shook from her light chuckles.
Miroku and Sango were down by the river
together gathering fresh drinking water within buckets when they both paused.
Their ever conscious awareness towards approaching danger was starting to cause
tingling to run up and down the backs of their neck and skulls.
“Miroku, do you feel that?” Sango asked as she stood slowly.
“Hai… but it is far away, I do not think we have to worry
just yet.” He answered as he turned to face the west.
“It’s Naraku… do you think Inuyasha is there?” Sango asked
as she stood beside Miroku.
Before either of them could say a word they each turned to
see Kagome, Kouga and Keade
running towards them. Just as they reached their sides everyone froze at the
new force they felt as it washed over them.
“Inuyasha…” Kagome breathed.
“Oh kami, I’ve never felt him
give off so much power before.” Sango whispered as
they continued to face west.
Just then
they felt another slightly stronger wave wash over them and they all tensed a
bit more.
“That one was Sesshomaru.” Miroku said as they felt a few more fainter spikes come
from Inuyasha and then a strong burst that was filled
with feelings of protection, warning and urgency. Before anyone could say a
word they felt another huge burst of power from Sesshomaru,
this too filled with feelings of acknowledgement fury and warning.
“Kami, they are communicating
with their auras.” Kouga said quietly. “I didn’t know
you could do that.”
“I’ve heard of it before, but this is the first time I’ve
ever felt it for myself.” Sango replied.
“When did they get so strong? Dog breath was NOT that
strong when we last battled.” Kouga replied.
“What do we do, they are so far away, there is no way we
can get there in time!” Kagome was beginning to panic slightly.
“Relax Kagome; I think they will be fine. Narakus’ evil aura is indeed strong, but it seems to me as
though Inuyasha and Sesshomaru
both have some how learned how to unlock more if not the rest of their
spiritual power. They are both so much stronger than before.” Miroku said in the hopes of calming Kagome.
“I think he’s right child.” Keade
said as she found a dry place on the side of the river to sit cross legged with
her hands resting on her knees and her back straight.
“Keade?” Kagome asked as she felt Keadais’
own aura begin to grow and pulse.
“Sit Kagome, this is an excellent opportunity to practice
some of your miko training.” An old hand patted the
ground next to the old miko as a sign that it was
more of an order than as request. Bowing her head in response, Kagome took a
seat next to Keade and mirrored her position.
“Now child, relax and let your aura go. Focus and clear
your mind. When you are completely relaxed reach out with your own aura and
feel for Inuyashas’.” Keade
instructed with her eyes still shut. “Do not be discouraged if you are unable
to reach him from this distance, for it is a great ways away and although ye
are a miko ye are still human.” She too then went quiet.
Kouga, Miroku and Sango
looked between the two of them and then took their own seats a little off to
the side keeping a stead vigil on the meditating mikos’.
“Miroku, are you not going to try and focus your aura
as well?” Sango asked as she felt Kagomes’
own aura weaken and then give off a soft pulse.
“I do not think I should let my own guard down while they
are in a trance.” Miroku said as he looked to the
left and spotted a bit of red off in the trees. He let no sign show and said
nothing to the others that he had noticed Kikyos’
presence. He knew that if he let out a warning to remain on watch for the
undead miko that he might inadvertently give himself
away. Though he had said nothing to his companions with regards to Kikyou in the last few days he could not help the shudder
that would wrack his frame when she came near. He often spent long moments
staring off in her direction pondering what it was that had his senses and
internal alarms going off at all times when she was near. ‘There is something
not quite right about her; it is almost as though she were not herself at
times.’ His ponderings were cut short once more as Sangos’
voice filtered through his thoughts and pulled his attention once more to the
events taking place around them.
“Why do you think Naraku has
attacked Sesshomarus’ castle?” Sango
asked looking between Kouga and Miroku, she wanted to hear
both opinions on the matter.
“Most likely because Sesshomaru
is one of his most powerful enemies. Maybe he was hoping he would be an easier
target while cut off from the rest of us. Although Sesshomaru
may be the strongest demon in the Western Lands, Naraku
still poses a significant threat.” Miroku answered in
a soft voice. He was currently watching Kagome whose aura had begun to spike
and grow in intensity.
“I don’t know if that is really it. Sesshomaru
is often on his own and away from his land… The
question we should be asking ourselves is what does Sesshomaru
often have with him, but does not have with him on this occasion? It is not
uncommon for Naraku to attack Sesshomaru
when he is walking his lands, but it is not his habit to attack places unless
they hold something that he wants. So, what does Sesshomaru
possess and bring with him at most times that he might not have with him at the
moment?” The wolf prince sat hunched over with his chin in his fist contemplating
his thoughts out loud, unaware of the looks of surprise adorning the faces of
those around him.
Before Sango could voice her own
thoughts on the matter she shivered as the malevolent aura of Naraku grew slightly in intensity. “He’s attacking now. The
battle has begun, if only there was a way for us to get there in time!”
Kagome could feel her body beginning to tingle slightly.
She was focusing on Inuyashas’ aura and knew that he
was ok for the time being. She shifted her focus to Sesshomaru
and was surprised at how fast he was moving. She had not known that he could
reach such speeds, at the rate he was moving he would reach Inuyasha
and the Western Castle within half an hour. Redirecting
her focus she brought back up the image of Inuyasha.
She could almost see him in her minds eye. He was standing in front of the
castle with the castle guard standing ready behind him. Then she saw it in her
mind, massive amounts of black swarmed around in front of the castle, Narakus’ minions had arrived. She saw Inuyasha
unleash the Wind Scar as they swarmed towards him and the other guarding youkai. Kagome felt her heart clench and her spirit pulse.
Her inner voice screamed out ‘Inuyasha’ and she felt
her body go rigid.
Sesshomaru continued to pick up speed as he flew in a direct route to
the castle. He felt a surge of power focus on him for a moment and noted that
it felt like Inuyashas' miko.
He was vaguely surprised at the increased spiritual strength the miko seemed to have developed but quickly dismissed the
presence and feel of her power flowing over him in warm waves as her miko energy tingled against his senses. At the speed he was
currently going at he would reach the castle in half an hour. He felt Inuyashas power spike and stay spiked and noted that the
malevolent aura seemed to have stopped moving... the battle had begun. ‘Rin.’
Inuyasha watched as the black mass bore down on them all. Then just
before they were within striking distance of the tetsuseigas’
wind scar he felt Kagomes’ aura surround him. He
didn’t have time to do more than wonder at the strength he felt coming off of
it before the mass charged head on at him. “Wind Scar!!!”
Inuyasha shouted as he unleashed tetsusiegas'
killing attack. A hundred demons fell to the ground, only to have their place
taken by more attacking demons. He heard battle cries and shouts rent the air
as his fellow youkai rushed the attacking swarm.
Blood showered down on everything, painting everything and everyone a rose red color.
Inuyasha parried attacking swords that slashed at him from Narakus minions and struck out with his claws a few times
while shouting “Iron Reaver Soul Stealer,” killing a
few more of the minions. He flipped backwards in the air and slashed out with
his sword while landing, slicing three demons in half at the waist line. He
glanced around quickly to take in the battle and seeing no one except Narakus’ minions before him, he charged his strength
causing tetsuseiga to glow white. He ran forward,
brought his sword up and twirling in a circle yelled out “Wind Scar!!” Another
hundred demons fell before him. Once again another hundred took their place. Without
pause Inuyasha ran into the swarm of lower class
demons, and began to slash and slice at any who came too close. A few times he
found himself too close to a demon or two and was forced to use hand to hand
combat in order to keep from being bitten or stabbed himself. A tail hit him
square in the back and he felt himself flying through the air. Stretching his
arms out and bringing his legs together he used the air itself to right himself
before he landed feet first on the ground in a squat. Using his other senses
and relying on his sixth sense he jumped up and twisted in the air, just
managing to avoid being beheaded from behind. He charged his strength once more
while in the air and upon land, slashed out in front of himself and shouted a
third time. “Wind Scar!!!” A hundred more demons fell
before him and he was only slightly relieved to see that less demons than
before occupied the skies and land around him. Slowly they were winning the
battle against Narakus’ minions. This knowledge did
not cause Inuyasha to relax in the least however. He
knew from experience that Naraku would either show up
himself or send his incarnates or one of his golem dolls’.
Miroku, Sango and Kouga
all gasped at once, all having their eyes focused on Kagome. She was still
sitting across from Kaede in a cross legged position.
She had gone completely rigid and stayed that way for the past 15 minutes. Now
they watched in awe as her aura began to condense and pulse with power around
her. The fine hairs on their arms began to stand up as they watched her hair
begin to lift and sway from the energy she was putting off. They could feel the
dark aura to the west building in intensity; it was beyond anything they had
felt before coming from Naraku. Even Inuyasha and Sesshomarus’ raw
power was astounding them. What was happening?
Kikyo had remained in the surrounding forest for the past 20
minutes, ever since she had first felt Narakus’ presence
to the west. She had come to see what the others thought about it and to see
what they would do. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion and hate as she watched
Kagome unleash her power. ‘Bitch.’ She thought. ‘That
is MY soul she is using right now. That should be within ME!’ She narrowed her
eyes at Kagome and the others. ‘Perhaps now is the best time to attack, they
are all too pre-occupied with themselves and her to notice me.’ Ever so slowly Kikyo reached for her bow and arrow, she notched it and
took aim at Kagome. Pulling the arrow back all the way until the feathers
brushed her cheek and ear she looked down the shaft of her arrow at Kagomes chest, right where her heart was.
Miroku tensed and prepared to launch himself forward. He had not
taken his focus away from Kikyo throughout the entire
time. He started to slowly release the sacred beads around his hand when he saw
that Kikyo had drawn her bow and arrow and was taking
aim at Kagome. Time seemed to have slowed down for him. Seconds seemed like
minutes and minutes, hours. He watched as she let the arrow fly… “WIND TUNNEL!” Miroku shouted and
released his Kazaana right beside Kagome. The force of the window tunnel cause the arrow to swerve and glide
right by Kagome with mere inches between them.
“Meddling Pest!” Kikyo screamed as she expertly
notched a second arrow and prepared to let it fly.
Miroku once again covered his wind tunnel. Sango
and Kouga were baffled at what just happened, but
quickly pushed their confused thoughts aside as instinct took over. Kouga launched forward and kicked the second arrow away,
yelping in pain as the sacred arrow burned its’ way through his shoe to his
foot. Sango cried out “HIRAIKOTSU!” and let her bone
boomerang fly at the dark miko.
Kikyo raised her hands and put up a barrier, she reached for her
weapons again and this time took aim at Sango.
Letting loose her arrow she glanced once more at Kagome. The entranced miko didn’t seem to know what was going on around her. Sango screamed out in pain as the arrow embedded itself in
her mid section and dropped to her knees. She grasped the arrow and tried not
to move or fall over as the pain raked through her body.
Kouga charged at the undead miko, but
with his foot burned badly from kicking the second sacred arrow he was unable
to move fast enough to reach her before she erected her barrier. He hit it at
full force and was knocked backwards falling to the ground while hitting his
head on a rock in the process. He lifted his head in an attempt to keep the
black from consuming him. “Kagome…” He whispered before falling unconscious.
Miroku was horrified as he watched Sango
sink to the ground and Kouga pass out. He ran to Sangos’ side and held her in place. He told her not to
move, and stroked her hair to reassure her as he held her in his arms. He heard
Kouga call out Kagomes’
name before silence fell. He felt Sangos’ body shake
slightly from her cries of pain. He glanced up to see that Kikyo
was now advancing on Kagome. “Kagome, snap out of it!” Miroku
yelled.
Just then Keade came to and saw
what was transpiring. “Kikyo sister, is this what ye seek? Revenge on those who have done nothing to
ye? Do ye still not see who your true enemy is?” Keade asked as she watched her sister draw nearer.
“Silence Keade! I shall take back what truly belongs to me.” Kikyo hissed as she drew forth a dagger that had been
hidden within her sleeves.
Just then
Kagome’s head snapped back and she let forth an ear splitting soul chilling
scream. Her arms flung out to her sides and extended to the air, fingers stretched
wide. Keade gasped and her eyes widened as she looked
once more upon Kagome. Kikyo starred in horror as she
felt the last bit of her own remaining soul being tugged away from her.
“No, NO!” Kikyo screamed as she
lunged for Kagome.
Keade and Miroku watched opened
mouthed as Kagomes’ body lift into the air and
hovered above the horrified Kikyo. Kagomes’ scream ended but as she drew in another breath her
scream continued. They watched as Kikyo cried out and
her soul stealers disintegrated before her eyes. Her remaining bit of soul was
wrenched from her body and flew back to Kagome, who dropped back down to earth
and lay completely still. Kikyos’ body turned to soil
and ash as her clothes fluttered in the wind.
Just as Keade was about to
approach Kagome and check on her, Kagomes aura flared
again. It pulsed and flared out with new found power. It was bright and dark
all at once. Colors seemed to swirl within the white and black of her aura. “Inuyasha…” She breathed out. “I am here.” It was barely
above a whisper. Then before their eyes Keade and Miroku watched as a large portion of her aura broke off
from the rest and disappeared to the West. Silence blanketed the area broken
only by the sobs of pain escaping Sango.
Keade got up and went to Sango and Miroku. “Miroku, ye must hold the
arrow still and snap off the end of it. We must remove the shaft from her
body.”
Miroku did as Keade instructed and broke off the end of the arrow. “Now
brace ye self girl, we must pull the arrow out on the other side.” Keade placed her hand on Sangos’
shoulder and filled her with her own calming aura. Miroku
grasped the other end of the arrow that was sticking out of Sangos’
back and pulled it out at a moderate pace, not wanting to cause more internal
injury. Sango cried out and then collapsed as she
felt it leave her body completely.
Shippo choose that moment to appear in front of them. “Keade, Miroku. What’s going on?”
“Shippo-chan, where have you been
for the past half hour?” Miroku asked the kitsune as he began to pull Sangos
top off so that they could begin dressing her wounds.
“Eh? After I met up with Kagome at the well we headed back
towards the village but then Kagome sensed something and sent me over to Ayame to see that they were all fine and let them know that
everyone would be down by the river. But since Ayame
is all the way past the village on the other side of the field it took me a
while to get back and forth.” Shippo said as he
petted Sangos hair away from her face. He knew by
smell that Kagome was ok. Over the years he had come to trust in his nose and
other instincts. And right now they were telling him that Kagome was ok but Sango needed help. He looked to Kouga
and sniffed a bit. He smelt fine but looked like he would not be waking up for
some time. Shippo jumped up and turned around,
zipping off at top speed this time he yelled behind him. “I’ll go and get Ayame!”
The battle had been raging for half an hour now and almost
all of Narakus’ minions had been defeated. Inuyasha and the castle guard were fighting with all they
had. After beheading his opponent, Inuyasha glanced
around at the grounds before the castle. It looked to him as though half the
guard had fallen. Their bodies lying amongst those of the attacking demons who
had fallen prey to Inuyasha and the surviving guards.
Behind him he saw a younger looking hanyou of no more
than about 17 fighting off two demons; a third was slowly creeping up on the
unsuspecting youngster from behind. Inuyasha leaped
towards the other hanyou and sliced off the demons
arm before rounding about and beheading him.
The hanyou youngster stabbed one of the demons in the heart and
beheaded the other. He turned to see Inuyasha finish
off the third demon behind him. They looked each other in the eyes for a moment
then nodded to each other charged into battle once again side by side. Together
they fought, companions in war, their kinship instantly forged by the need to
survive and persevere they took down any and every demon that dared stand in
their way.
When there appeared to be about twenty demons left that
were fighting for their lives Inuyasha looked up to
see Kagura and Kanna floating
above the mass of demon bodies that littered the ground. He growled when he saw
what she was doing. As he watched she sprinkled some dust and dirt amongst the
corpses and uttered words under her breath. “Kagura!” He shouted at her before leaping into the
air with his sword glowing. He brought it up above his head and shouted out
“Backlash Wave!” as he swung it towards Kagura and Kanna.
Kagura was deep in concentration as she performed the complex
spell that would bring the dead back to life as the undead. As she opened her
eyes she saw Inuyasha jumping into the air and
reading to strike, “Dragon Twisters!” She cried out just before Inuyasha brought his sword down with his backlash wave. She
screamed in horror as she watched her own attack come flying back at her. It
was too close to dodge out of the way. As she felt her flesh, clothes and hair
being ripped and shredded around her, she screamed in agony and fury. When the
attack was over, she was barely alive enough to flee for her life.
“Damn you Inuyasha! Kanna, we better back out for now. Hakkudoshi,
you are on your own!” Kagura hissed as she flew on
her feather away from the battle and to the north.
Down
below her, hundreds of the demons that Inuyasha and
the castle guards had worked to destroy started to slowly rise from the ground
and take up their weapons once more. The castle guards that remained looked on
in disbelief as the hordes of walking dead demons turned towards the castle
once more.
Inuyasha cursed loudly and ordered everyone to regroup. He watched
as the undead advanced on them and then saw to his horror Hakkudoshi
descend out of the sky upon his demon horse to stand before the army of the
dead. “Inuyasha” Hakkudoshi
greeted as he landed.
“Hakkudoshi.” Inuyasha snarled.
“You die today Inuyasha. Prepare
yourself!” And with that Hakkudoshi leaped at Inuyasha slashing out at him. Inuyasha
dodged to the side but Hakkudoshi managed to slash
open his left shoulder before he could get away.
“Hnnugh” Inuyasha
grunted, twirled and lunged at Hakkudoshi, who side
stepped the attack and kicked at Inuyasha, only to
touch nothing but air. Inuyasha had already moved to
stand in front of Hakkudoshi. He tore his claws along
Hakkudoshis’ shoulder and neck, ripping open his
flesh and baring his collar bone.
“Ungghh” Hakkudoshi
gasped out bringing his blade up and slashing at Inuyasha
in return before the hanyou could back away. He
smiled in glee as he watched a line of red appear across Inuyashas’
mid section.
As the two fought to the death, a furious battle was being
waged around them. Undead demons attacked and surrounded the remaining living
castle guards who fought on bravely and held them back. Hakkudoshis’
demon horse Entei laid siege to the castle that was
slowly being torn apart piece by piece.
Inuyasha looked at tetsuseiga and debated
weather or not he should throw it away, and unleash his full demon form. Hakkudoshi had managed to stab him through the right side
of his chest and he could feel his demon blood fighting desperately to try and
heal himself, but there was simply too much damage. He had managed to injure Hakkudoshi as well, but not nearly enough. Then all at once
three different things happened at once that manage to tilt the battle to their
favor.
Sesshomaru had arrived at his castle, he took in the sight of the
undead demons, Hakkudoshi and the demon horse and
then Inuyasha and his remaining castle guards. Before
he completed further thought, his hand went straight to tensaiga
and unleashed it. He had already unleashed a wave of tensaigas'
power upon the undead demons, killing a hundred of them in one swing before
anyone had manage to focus on him. Cheers, hollers and whoops rent the air,
courage was renewed and the remaining castle defenders felt new strength fill
them at the sight of their Lord. Such was the effect of Sesshomaru,
demon son of the great Inu Taisho, and current Lord
of the Western Lands.
Inuyasha felt before he saw that Sesshomaru
had arrived. Then before he looked to him he felt Kagomes
essence surround him and heard Hakkudoshis’ demon
horse howl in rage. Inuyasha steeled himself against
looking. Turning away from Hakkudoshi now would be
fatal. Inuyasha didn’t know how Kagome was doing it,
but as he felt wave after wave of her aura wash over him, he could feel his
demon blood reacting to her spiritual touch. It roared in response to hers. Yet
he could tell that something was different about her aura. It was dark and
light at the same time. The shades were not converging to form grey but
swirling around each other. He could feel how powerful she had become. Her
strength had more than doubled since he had last seen her. This only made him
yearn for her and their companions all the more. Being away from them had made
him realize how much they had all come to mean to him. They were more than
friends now; they were family, something that he had never thought that he
would ever have. He felt as the shift in her aura triggered something within him.
He could feel his nails becoming sharper longer, his fangs pointier and longer,
but his vision remained clear. He marveled at how his eyesight and hearing
increased and wondered if perhaps he did indeed take on his demon form but had
somehow managed to hold onto his sanity.
Hakkudoshi paused in his battle against Inuyasha.
He could sense that somehow the tables had turned. The balance was no longer in
their favor. He looked to his horse and found him striking and attacking a
barrier that had been placed upon the castle, preventing him from completing
his destruction of it. He marveled at this, the barrier had to be incredibly
strong in order to stand up to his horse. His eyes narrowed. Though he could
not see or smell the girl, he could sense the mikos’
presence. How was she here without her physical body!? Glancing to the left as
he swung half heartedly at the hanyou just to keep
him busy, he spotted Sesshomaru. He had felt him
arrive and now he watched as the demon lord laid waste to the undead army with
his sword. Each swipe of his sword either killed the undead demons or
resurrected the fallen castle demons. Hakkudoshi
refocused on the hanyou in front of him and his eyes
widened, before him stood a full fledged completely sane demon. His piercing
golden eyes let show the intelligence he usually hid, his dark purplish blue
jagged stripes streaked across his cheeks, his puppy ears that had always stood
out so blaringly had disappeared leaving behind only pointy ears on either side
of his head.
“Wha… How is this possible?” Hakkudoshi demanded.
“Keh, wouldn’t you love to know?”
The hanyou turned youki
taunted, and with that took to attacking Hakkudoshi
at a speed that surpassed even his.
Inuyasha was still in the midst of wondering how Kagome was
managing to erect a shield this strong while being many miles away. He switched
from defense to offense mode and started to attack left and right. He was
slowly shredding Hakkudoshi who could not seem to
move fast enough or predict the youkai Inuyashas’ next move.
Deciding that enough was enough, Hakkudoshi
turned to see that Sesshomaru was now battling his
demon horse. He whistled and called to him. Laughing with glee as he landed a
final stab at Inuyasha which drew the last bit of
blood of the battle before his horse picked him up and zipped out of eye sight
as quickly and mysteriously as he had arrived.
Inuyasha turned from watching where his opponent had disappeared to
and looked to Sesshomaru who had turned his attention
back to finishing off the remaining demons and undead army. Without a word to
his older brother Inuyasha stepped up to his side,
swung tetsuseiga and aimed for the non walking dead
while calling out “Wind Scarrr!” with that the rest
of the non dead demons were vanquished and only the dead remained.
Sesshomaru swung tensaiga at the undead
army that remained and sent them all back to hell. He turned to watch as Inuyasha walked up to Yukao and
helped him up from where he had fallen after being struck on the back of the
head. He took in the sight of his half brother and couldn’t help when his eyes
widened and his face showed shock. Schooling his face back to its’ impassive
expression he approached his half brother.
“Inuyasha, how was this done?” Sesshomaru asked in a demanding tone.
Inuyasha turned and faced his brother, matching his impassive face
with one of his own. “Which do you mean… my being here, the castle attack or my
sudden youkai appearance?” He met Sesshomarus’
look head on.
Sesshomaru paused as he felt Kagomes' aura
wash over him for a moment. It seemed as though she was looking for injuries,
and finding only mere scrapes. He marveled inwardly as she caused his demon
blood to react to her aura causing his blood to heal himself much faster than
normal. Then he felt her move on to Inuyasha.
He watched as Inuyashas’ blood
stopped seeping from his cuts and his wounds closed completely. He arched a
brow and asked “How is your miko wench doing this?”
He glanced at the castle and watched as the barrier that had kept the demon horse
from destroying it flickered and disappeared. “How is it she has erected a
barrier over this Sesshomarus’ castle without being
present?” Sesshomaru demanded.
Inuyasha sighed and looked around him. “Perhaps you should give
orders to clear the field and sort out the injured from the dead amongst your
servants. Is there a place we may sit and talk in private for a while? You
should find Rin as well and assure her that all is
fine. I sent her into the castle to sound the alarm and hide before the attack.
I told her not to come out of her hiding spot until you yourself came and got
her.” Inuyasha said in reply to all his questions.
Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at Inuyasha. ‘Is
he trying to evade this Sesshomarus questions?’ “Very
well, Yukao” Sesshomaru
addressed the now lucid young hanyou who was gaping
at the sight of Inuyashas’ new appearance.
“Yes my Lord?” Yukao asked with a
slight bow of his head.
“Show Inuyasha to my study and
prepare the room opposite my own for him.” Sesshomaru
said as he walked away.
Inuyasha sighed as he turned and walked side by side with Yukao towards the castle. He felt the presence of Kagome
leave them, and was surprised that he did not feel himself change once again
back into a hanyou. They watched as Sesshomaru addressed another older youkai
and told him to clean up the field, burn the demon carcasses and sort out the
injured from the dead youkais’, ordering him to lay
out the defenders off to the side who died defending the castle.
“I will take care of the castle defenders that died by my
self. You need only lay them out in a line.” Sesshomaru
said as he passed into the castle gates and kept going, his long demon hair
swaying slightly back and forth behind him.
Kagome blinked her eyes, groaned and looked at the clouds
that were swarming slowly above her. She sat up and briefly wondered why she
was lying down in the first place. Before she could bring herself to speak, she
looked around herself and saw Miroku and Keade leaning over a lightly crying Sango.
Her brow furrowed. She felt like she was momentarily forgetting something. She
closed her eyes and focused on what she had felt while in a trance… something
about Inuyasha and Sesshomaru
and then hearing cries and an attack taking place. Then all of a sudden it all
came back to her, Kikyos’ attack, Sangos’
injury and her absorbing her soul back within her. She remembered the burst of
power she felt when her soul was once again whole. She remembered aiding Inuyasha and Sesshomaru against Narakus’ attack, and she remembered how her friends here
had fought to protect her in her moment of supposed weakness. Getting to her
feet she quietly made her way over to them, and reaching out she touched Miroku lightly on the shoulder. “Let me see, please.” She
said just above a whisper.
“Of course, Kagome.”
Miroku replied as he shuffled to the side a bit to
allow her access to Sango.
Kagome slid down onto her knees beside her best friend. She
placed her hands over the wound and let her essence flow into Sango. Immediately she stopped crying and heaved a sigh of
relief. She could no longer feel the pain of being speared by an arrow. Looking
up at Kagome she placed her hand on her friends shoulder. “Thank you, Kagome.”
She said as she met her friends’ eyes before looking to where Kagome still had
her hands over her wound. She felt a peculiar tingling where the arrow had been.
“…Kagome, what is that?” She asked as she tilted her head more to get a better
look.
“One second, Sango, I am almost
done.” Kagome answered as she kept her hands on Sangos’
wound and closed her eyes gently before she lifted her hands off of Sango and heard faint gasps come from all three of her
friends.
“Kagome child, I see now that there is no more I can teach
you. You have surpassed even me when it comes to your miko
powers.” Keade said as she looked upon the slayers’
healed wound. Miroku looked to where Sango had been wounded and then back to Kagome, his lips
continued to move as though he were trying to speak, but no sounds came forth.
Kagome smiled. “It’s alright Miroku,
I know what you mean.” With that the monk threw his hands and arms around
Kagome and gave her a big bear hug.
“Words cannot express how grateful I am that you have
managed to do this for my Sango.” He said as he
continued to hug her, and if his words and actions were not proof of how he
truly felt the mere fact that he did not grope or attempt to grope her, were.
“Unggh” They all heard behind
them and turning they saw Kouga walking slowly up to
them. “Kagome, you’re ok!” He said a bit surprised as he continued towards
them. Before he got to them however Ayame and the
others appeared in a small cloud of dust and dirt.
“We came as soon as we saw Shippo
barreling towards us, he mentioned someone being hurt and an attack…” Ayame said quickly but then slowed down near the end of it.
Sango was covering herself back up and Kagome stood
up to face them.
“Miroku, Keade,
can you fill them in on what has happened for me? I am going to go home for the
night. I’ll see you guys in the morning.” Kagome said as she started to walk
away.
“Hold on Lady Kagome, you should not walk about alone,
especially after what just happened.” Miroku said as
he looked for someone to escort her.
“I think I will be alright by myself Miroku…
especially after what just happened.” Kagome replied as she kept walking.
“What exactly did happen while you were in a trance
Kagome?” Kouga asked her as she neared the tree line.
“I suspect you will all find out soon enough when Inuyasha arrives within the next week with Sesshomaru.” Kagome said before she disappeared into the
trees, heading towards the bone eaters well.
Sesshomaru entered the castle and sniffed at the air. The acrid smell
of burning materials and toxic smoke filled his nose and caused his eyes to
water. He took smaller sniffs and eventually ended up catching Rins’ scent. He followed it into the underground tunnels
and soon came upon her crouched within a little cubbyhole behind some wine
bottles. He felt a smirk form upon his lips as he took in her little hiding place.
“Rin.” Sesshomaru said and watched as
her head sprang up and she shoved aside the small wine rack.
“Lord Sesshomaru!” The now 14
year old Rin exclaimed as she jumped out of the hole
and stood before her lord. “Is the battle over then, my Lord?” Rin asked as she dusted herself off.
“Indeed, Rin, it is.” Sesshomaru answered her while he turned and started to lead
her back upstairs.
“Lord Sesshomaru, Rin is assuming that Inuyasha-sama
is alright. Is he?” Rin asked her lord as she
followed him down the dark corridor.
Sesshomaru thought of Inuyasha as he last
saw him in a full youkai form. “Perhaps he is better
than alright for now, Rin.” He answered.
Rin looked at her lord. ‘Better than alright?’ She
thought as she followed him. ‘What does he mean by that?’ But after years of
following her lord around, she knew better than to question him further on his brother.
“Rin, I am pleased by the way you
have behaved this day. I have been told by a few of the castle guards that it
was you and Hatari who wrung the alarm.” He informed
her placidly as they walked on in silence.
“Rin was only doing as Inuyasha-sama instructed her, my Lord.”
Sesshomaru looked to the young girl who was walking slightly behind
him on his left side. “Explain.” Was all he said as he stopped to survey the
tunnel before them, sniffing every now and then.
“My Lord, Rin and Hatari were playing on the front lawns together, when the
black cloud formed in the distance. Inuyasha-sama
told Rin to run inside with Hatari
and to hide after sounding the alarm. Rin told Hatari to find his parents and let them know that Inuyasha-sama was at the front gates guarding against
invasion already, and then Rin took off to ring the
alarm and hide. Inuyasha-sama told Rin not to move from Rins’ hiding
spot until Lord Sesshomaru himself came to get Rin. So Rin obeyed, and even when
the sounds of battle faded in the distance Rin stilled
stayed in her hiding spot until her Lord Sesshomaru
found came.” A smile bright enough to lighten even their mud tunnel alighted on
her lips as she spoke of Inuyasha and his defending
the castle.
“Hnn.” Was Sesshomaru’s
only response. ‘So, not only did Inuyasha
protect my castle and land, he protected this Sesshomarus’
ward as well. Though he hated to admit it, he knew that he was now in debt to
his filthy half breed brother… ‘Though perhaps he is no
longer such a filthy half breed.’
Upon entering the first floor of the castle Sesshomaru stopped one of his servants and instructed him
to organize the servants together and get repairs underway. When he was done
with the servant he turned to Rin. “You are to go and
find Hatari and play with him in the garden that is
outside this Sesshomarus’ office.”
“Yes, my
Lord!” Rin said and hurried off to find Hatari. When Rin had turned 13 it
had fallen on her to watch over Hatari, who was one
of the few demon children privileged enough to live in the castle. Sesshomaru had thought it fitting for Rin
to be given responsibility over another, since humans her age were usually preparing to find mates of their own. So it
came about that Rin spent the majority of her time
teaching Hatari and studying her own lessons. Growing
up with Demons had its’ advantages and being able to learn much more than the
average human was one of them.
One hour later, after surveying his castle grounds and the
damage that had been done Sesshomaru made a final
sweep of tensaiga reviving his guards that had fallen
during the battle. He sheathed his sword and set off in the direction of his
office where his brother now awaited him.
Inuyasha sat on the window ledge of Sesshomarus’
office, eating fish that he had scavenged in the kitchen. It had been a little over
an hour since he had last seen Sesshomaru. ‘What’s
keeping that ass of a youkai now?’ He watched Rin playing with Hatari in the
gardens. He had at first marveled at how much she had grown over the last 7
years. Smirking to him self as he looked at Rin
closely he couldn’t help his thoughts. ‘Sesshomaru is
going to have his hands full over the next 5 years; she looks to be becoming a
beautiful young woman. It is not often that one remains as pure of heart and
mind as she has.’ He couldn’t help but wonder how his brother planned to deal
with her coming into woman hood. ‘Maybe I could suggest Kagome or Sango having a talk with her on what to expect…’ Just then
the door to the study opened and Sesshomaru stood
before Inuyasha.
“Took you long enough.” Inuyasha grumbled as he
continued to scarf down the plate of fish.
Sesshomaru looked at Inuyasha. “How is it
you bare the markings of a full youki, Inuyasha?” Sesshomaru demanded
more than asked.
Inuyasha looked at Sesshomaru, and then
back to his fish which was nearly gone. “I am not certain how this has
happened. One moment I was fighting Hakkudoshi and
loosing and the next moment I felt Kagome near me, and then the next I was a
full youkai. I intend to ask her about it myself. I
thought perhaps that this” he gestured to his appearance “would wear off and I
would be my hanyou self again when Kagome left… but
that does not seem to be the case.” Inuyasha said as
he looked outside to see Rin drop to ground and cause
Hatari who was attempting to tackle her go flying over
her and land in a rose bush. Inuyasha broke into a
laugh at the site of Hatari jumping two feet above
the rose bush and yelping.
Sesshomaru made no sign that he noticed the display outside, but
inwardly smirked. ‘So, the whelp knows nothing of his transformation.’ “When
did your miko wench become so strong?” He demanded in
his usual brisk bored tone.
“Once again Sesshomaru, you ask
me a question I can not answer. When I left Kagome and the others almost 4 weeks
ago, she was planning on beginning her official miko
training with Keade. Maybe she has come to realize
the true extent of her abilities through her training, I am not sure. All I
know is that even her aura has changed slightly. Did you notice how it was both
light and dark at once? Whereas before I left her, it was only light… I wonder
what could have happened, maybe Kikyo did
something….” Inuyasha trailed off.
Sesshomaru started slightly, his reaction barely enough to be caught
by the average eye. “Kikyo?
Have you in your ignorance sent the dead witch to your mikos
side, while you are away?” He sneered at Inuyasha.
Inuyasha looked at Sesshomaru
indignantly. “Of what concern is that to you anyways? And what do you mean my
ignorance? I know they do not see eye to eye but it is not like they are mortal
enemies.” Inuyasha stated, while glaring at Sesshomaru.
“Not enemies Inuyasha? Have you
forgotten all the many times your dead bitch has tried to kill your miko, or even you yourself? Do you honestly believe that
your dead bitch is no threat to her reincarnation? That she does not yearn to
have her entire soul back?” He sneered verbally once again at his ignorant half
brother.
Inuyasha felt his mouth go dry. ‘Kami,
how could I have been so blind?’ he screamed in his head while he mentally
berated himself over his foolishness. “I encountered Kikyo
just outside the Western Lands border about a week and a half ago. She agreed
to join us in our battle against Naraku, and departed
that night for Keades’ village…” He said with all indignation
gone from his voice, his shoulders were slightly slumped as he thought over
what he had done.
“Then it seems obvious to this Sesshomaru
what has increase your mikos’ power so quickly.” Sesshomaru stated as he glanced out the window at Rin. He looked to Inuyasha to see
what his reaction to his comment would be, and was slightly surprised to see he
looked relieved.
“Her soul is whole once more. Kikyo
must have tried to harm Kagome. Fool, with all the protection Kagome is
currently under.” Inuyasha said as he swallowed his
last bit of fish.
Sesshomaru lifted an eyebrow. “What protection?”
“Sango, Miroku,
Keade, Kouga and some of
his pack, and Ayame and some of her pack from the
north as well as Shippo and Kirara. They are all back at the village waiting for my return.” Inuyasha said.
“Then why are you here, uninvited on this Sesshomarus’ land?” Sesshomaru
demanded once again to know.
Inuyasha glared. “Don’t get all high and mighty with me, Sesshomaru. I just saved your land, castle, subjects and
ward from being destroyed and killed off by Naraku!”
“You would not have saved anything, if it were not for this
Sesshomaru arriving on time!” Sesshomaru
said right back.
“Well you would have arrived back to nothing if I had not
been here in the first place!” Inuyasha said with a
slight smirk. He knew that Sesshomaru knew this too,
for he could do nothing more than glare.
“Why are you here Inuyasha, what
do you want?” Sesshomaru ground out between clenched teeth.
Inuyasha audibly sighed. “About four weeks ago, I left Kagome and
the others back at Keades’ village. It was about then
that we started to sense something in air; something is gathering together and
preparing to strike the land… We believed it was Naraku.
However, after the battle we just had, I am not so sure it is him anymore. What
we sensed arriving a month ago was… is ten to fifteen times stronger than anything
Naraku has displayed so far. Today just adds to my
suspicions. Naraku sent his strongest incarnates at
us, along with at least a thousand sub demons, and we still managed to defeat
them, without the aid of my companions… except of course Kagome. Kagura, Kanna, Hakkudoshi and his demon horse Entei.
I am beginning to think that there is another being that has been using Naraku as a cover to get close to us before attacking, and
I think Naraku is aware of this new threat and that
is why we have not seen hide nor hair of him for
almost a month now. Which also makes me suspect that there is something here
that would cause him to come out of hiding. There must be something here that
he wants quite badly. You wouldn’t happen to know what that was, would you Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha asked as he
looked Sesshomaru in the eye.
“This Sesshomaru knows not of
what you speak.” Sesshomaru answered, keeping his
gaze upon Rin.
Inuyasha just stared at him for a few moments then he too looked
out the window at Rin. “I have been traveling since I
left the village; I have gone on a search to gather what allies I could. Kouga agreed to aid us, and so has his intended Ayame. I believe that they have brought their packs
together and split them down the middle, some of their warriors followed them
to the village while the others remained behind to guard what is left of their
combined packs. I then heard a rumor of Kikyo being
near here and since it was on my way here, I met up with her and sent her back
as well; I see now that that was a huge error on my part. I arrived here in the
Western Lands about a week ago. I have been wondering the land in search of
you, but then decided to just come here to the palace. I knew you would
eventually find me instead. The others and I agree that your assistance in the
defeat against the oncoming threat would be of great help.” Inuyasha
finished off and then waited for Sesshomaru to reply.
After a few minutes of silence Inuyasha decided to
broach the subject of Rin and her oncoming woman hood.
“Sesshomaru, might I suggest that
you bring Rin to speak with Kagome or Sango within the next few days? I think that Rin is going to need another human female around her for a
bit.” He said hoping that Sesshomaru got the hint.
To say that Sesshomaru was
surprised at the amount of civility and adult politeness Inuyasha
was displaying, would be the understatement of the year. He had never guessed
that his brother had the mental strength required to add two plus five and come
up with seven. He looked upon Rin as she tackled Hatari and pondered what Inuyasha
had said about her needing a human female around to talk to and knew that his
half brother was right. For that reason alone they would journey East with Inuyasha. He turned to face Inuyasha
and gave his reply.
“This Sesshomaru has had similar
suspicions concerning Naraku and an unknown other. We
will travel East with you, Inuyasha, to give Rin the chance to speak with either your miko or tiajiya, and once we are
there this Sesshomaru will decide on weather or not
your pack and allies are worthy of an alliance with the West.” With that said
he turned to leave. Stopping at the door he turned his head ever so slightly
and said “Your room has been set up for your stay. We will leave first thing in
the morning. Yukao.” Sesshomaru said sternly and
with that the young demon appeared before his lord.
“My Lord.” Yukao said with a bow.
“Show Inuyasha to his room, and
ensure that he is called upon for dinner.” Sesshomaru
instructed and then left. Leaving Yukao
and Inuyasha staring after him.
“Well, if wonders
never cease.” Inuyasha mumbled. “He didn’t address me
as a filthy half breed.”
