Here comes
another chapter! Silly requests and puppy dog eyes begging me to finish, ok ok. I could never turn down those damn puppy dog eyes. Sigh. These characters wouldn�t give me all of their secrets so it was fairly difficult to write this chapter. Again they took me somewhere I wasn�t intending, but it has promises. Enjoy!

Chapter 2:
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Kagome strode in
front of the group purposefully not pausing even though they were practically begging
her with their eyes. She never did get the sleep she wanted the night before because
of a certain, now heavily bandaged, hanyou who decided that he would
interrogate her for information before she was able to go to bed. That ended
with the usual Inuyasha shaped crater and Kagome growling for the rest of the
night in her sleep.
When they had
woken, Kagome had force fed them and got them moving before they were really
ready. Now she led them with ferocious intent not even
letting them rest while she forced them to follow in her pissed off foot steps.
�Oi, Kagome, slow down will ya?� Inuyasha scampered up
beside her. �Look, you don�t need to keep going like this.�
Kagome growled
at him. �Like what?�
�You started off
leading us today, which is usually what I do-�
Kagome threw up
her arms and turned on him. �Oh! So I can�t lead the group?!�
Inuyasha put his
up hands in defense. �That�s not what I�m saying, you just started today off at
a really hard pace and you haven�t changed it at all in five hours, not even
for a quick break.�
�We don�t need
to break yet.�
�Uh�Kagome?� Kagome turned her heated eyes to Miroku.
�Um�I�think we would like to take a break.� Kagome narrowed her eyes at him.
�Please,
Kagome?� piped in Shippo, �I�m hungry.�
Kagome�s eyes
softened when she looked to her adoptive son. �Ok, Shippo. We�ll stop here.�
They moved off the road and rested on the grass.
�How come you
listen to the little brat and not to me?� Inuyasha barked.
The calm that
had filled Kagome�s eyes for the first time all day blazed to anger. �Don�t
speak about him like that, Inuyasha.�
Inuyasha gave
her an arrogant smirk while he crossed his arms. �Oh yeah?
And what you gonna do about it?� Kagome growled and
the rest of the group sighed. They passed around a bag of chips that Kagome had
brought back from her time as they watched the two fight.
�They�re at it
fairly early today.� Sango said as she looked to Miroku.
�I don�t know,
they tend to get at it around now.� He replied.
�Yeah, but it�s
at a higher level today than normal. If you think about it the anger level was
high when we woke up.�
Miroku nodded
sagely at Sango�s words and Shippo mimicked him.
�Perhaps
something happened in the forest when Inuyasha went charging after Kagome last
night?� Shippo suggested.
�Quite possibly, my little friend.� Miroku said as they
watch Kagome storm around in a little circle.
�Shut up, shut
up, shut up! I am SO
tired of your CRAP, Inuyasha!
You�re nothing but a load of hot air with limited mental capacity! You do
nothing but barge in on situations without thinking and one of these days we
won�t be here to save you from yourself and you�re going to end up getting a
sword in the belly!�
�When the hell did this end up being about my
fighting tactics?! What would you know about it anyway when you know nothing
about strategy?!� The group winced as Kagome snarled.
�You watch your
mouth, Inuyasha.� She said with crisp, concise words as she felt her fury fill
her.
Inuyasha
scoffed. �Whatchya gonna
do? Sick your dog on me? Tell me,
Kagome, how long have you been his spying little bitch?� Kagome�s jaw dropped
as her body went completely still.
�Uh oh.�
Whispered Shippo as Kagome�s eyes darkened and narrowed.
�How dare you.�
She whispered. �How dare you presume to mock me, to presume I would betray our pack?
How dare you think that Sesshomaru has anything
to do with what�s happened between us.� (�Wait, Sesshomaru?� whispered Sango
from the background.) �How dare you call me a bitch and how DARE you call me a spy! You know what?
Fuck you Inuyasha! I don�t need this crap! There are people begging me to join their groups, why
should I remain here with an incompetent
little twit of a boy who can�t even choose which girl to love.� Inuyasha�s eyes
widened at that. �Why should I be with a simple immature puppy when I can choose to be with any man I want to? Tell me, why should I stay with you?� Inuyasha
swallowed and licked his lips but couldn�t voice his answer. Kagome sighed.
�Your brother has offered me a spot at his side. I declined because I thought
that this is where I belonged, by your side. But if you can�t even give me a
reason to stay, then I won�t.�
�Wait!� Inuyasha
cried as she turned to go. She raised an eyebrow as she looked at him. �J�just stay here. You can�t join him that would be
betraying us!�
�No, it wouldn�t
because I wouldn�t be your enemy. Do better, Inuyasha.�
�W�we need your
help to find the jewel shards.�
Kagome�s face
fell as her shoulders drooped and Inuyasha knew he had said something he
couldn�t take back. �That�s all I am to you, isn�t it? Just the shard detector,
not a real person, not really Kagome, just the tool to find those precious
stones for you so that you can get more powerful and become a demon. A
mindless, murdering, immoral demon who will kill mercilessly
until you are killed, and it�ll probably be me that has to put you down.�
Kagome shook her head as the light in her eyes died. �No, I don�t think I�ll be
your tool anymore. I may not know how to fight, I may not know how to
strategize, but I do know that I won�t be used anymore. I�m tired of it and I�m
tired of wondering when you�ll realize that the body that roams these lands and
haunts your dreams isn�t Kikyo.� Inuyasha tilted his head in confusion,
she was dancing around too many topics for him to make any sense of it. He
watched as she smiled sadly at her friends then turned her back on them.
�Wait! Kagome!� Shippo stood up and ran to his mother only to be
grabbed by the scruff just before he reached her. He snarled up at the
offending hand that had picked him up only to feel his snarl die in his throat
as fear bloomed in his chest.
�You heard her,
boy. She has left your group.� Sesshomaru tossed the small kit to Inuyasha who
caught him easily. Inuyasha stared openly as Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru
with naked wonder before she brought up her defenses to hide her emotions from
him. Inuyasha couldn�t help notice that she was standing taller or that a light
blush had tinted her cheeks for his elder brother.
�Kagome, will
you join me now?� Sesshomaru asked as he held his hand out to her.
He had come from
nowhere, suddenly appearing by her side. She was startled and wondered how long
he had been following their group. She was also excited because she had been
thinking about Sesshomaru�s offer the night before all day and it had been
looking more and more pleasant.
She had tried to
find reasons to stay and soon found that it was the rest of the group that made
her stay, but the rest of the group wasn�t any different from Inuyasha. Sure
they were nice to her and loved her, but she was still just an image, needed
for what she could do, not who she was and at the moment she was pissed at all
of them for not seeing her as something other than what they needed. Kagome
licked her lips and looked down at Sesshomaru�s offered hand. �Um�� She looked
back into his eyes and made her decision, �Only if you promise me three
things.� She said quickly.
Sesshomaru
raised his eyebrow. �I�m listening.�
�You can�t treat
me disrespectfully, you can�t hurt my old pack and if I choose to leave you,
you must let me go.�
Sesshomaru
narrowed his eyes. �I will treat you with respect only if you recognize my
dominance to you, I won�t hurt them if they do not threaten me or anything
under my protection and I will let you leave if it is truly your choice and
your choice alone, deal?�
Kagome narrowed
her eyes right back at him. �I will recognize your dominance to me now, but if
you prove to no longer be my alpha then I will not hesitate to tell you as
much. Otherwise, deal.� She put her hand in his and shook it. He gripped her
hand tighter and pulled her to him much to her surprise and joy. He looked over
his shoulder at his half brother and smirked arrogantly.
�Fare well,
brother.�
�Bye, guys, I�ll
try to visit!� Yelled Kagome as she waved good-bye feeling
true happiness for the first time in a long time. She saw her friends
shocked and sad faces and wondered if she hadn�t acted too rashly right before
Sesshomaru took them to the skies.
The feeling of
flying was incredible. She had experienced something similar while riding
piggy-back with Inuyasha, but this�this was something extraordinary. It was
like swimming only your muscles weren�t being worked and you could breathe
freely. The speed made excitement bubble in her chest while she reveled in the
feel of merely gliding through the sky.
She looked down
at the ground some hundred feet below her and wondered why she didn�t feel
fear. The arm around her shifted and she looked up to her escort. She realized
she wasn�t afraid of falling because he would not allow her to be hurt. He was
strong enough that she had no flicker of fear at her well being, she was part
of his pack now and as alpha he would do anything to protect her�and the rest
of the pack. Hmm�
�Why are you
frowning? Regretting your choice already?�
Kagome found her
way out of her thoughts only to be lost in his eyes. He was incredible looking.
His intense eyes with their unusual color were almond shaped and laced with
thick lashes. His face was decidedly feminine despite his strong jaw and
sculpted cheek bones, the markings on which were more like birth marks than the
painted image she had always assumed them to be. His lips weren�t as full as
Kagome liked them but they weren�t thin and were absolutely kissable. She felt
the lean body beneath her hands and the strong arm encircling her and had to
fight back the images of what he might look like under all that armor and
clothing.
Kagome blinked a
few times at him and realized his eyes were laughing at her and she frowned
harder. �Well I wasn�t regretting anything until you started laughing at me.�
�I�m not
laughing at you.�
Kagome felt a
barely perceptible vibrate beneath her hands and gaped. �Yes you are! Why are
you laughing at me�?� She wanted to say �you jerk� but knew that wasn�t exactly
the way to start off their new �friendship�.
�You were
staring at me so openly. I�ve never seen anyone look like such a fish before.�
Sesshomaru bit his cheek to keep from smiling and laughing out loud at her
gaping expression. One thing he had found he liked about being around this girl
was that she had the tendency to make him want to laugh. Now, being who he was
he would never do that, but it still felt good to have his icy heart heated
enough that he thought of laughing.
�I did not look
like a fish!� she said indignantly.
�You did indeed.
Now why were you frowning?�
Kagome let out a
huff and wished they were on the ground so she could cross her arms moodily.
�My thoughts were running from me, that�s all.�
�In what
direction did they run?� He always had to ask her lots of questions before he
really got anywhere but strangely he enjoyed it with her.
�They ran to
what rank am I in the pack and what is your level of protection for each
member?� When he raised an eyebrow she shrugged. �What order will you think of
saving someone? Will it go me, Rin, Jaken or Rin, me, Jaken, or just Rin and
me?�
�Why?�
�I�d like to
know so I can react appropriately in a battle.�
�Rin is my ward
and so I will protect her first. If you need saving I will
save you but I expect you, as alpha female of this pack, to be able to fend for
yourself. If my half brother has not taught you how to fight properly
then I will teach you to fight for I require it of you to be able to protect my
ward if I am otherwise engaged. Is that clear?�
Kagome nodded
excitedly. �Hai Sesshomaru-sama.
Are you really going to train me? What am I going to learn? Just basic hand to
hand or weapons too? Can I beat up Jaken? Do you know anything about miko
training?�
Sesshomaru
sighed at her endless questions. �Yes I shall train you, both hand to hand and weapons.
No you may not attack Jaken, unless he makes the first move,
and no, I am a youkai, I do not know how to use miko powers other than in
theory. Though,� he added when he saw her downtrodden face, �I do have an
extensive library and believe you will be able to find some references there. I
assume you can read?�
Kagome raised an
eyebrow. �Yes I can read, and write too. Why would you have books on miko�s?�
�Know thy
enemy.� Kagome made an �O� with her mouth. �Prepare yourself, we are
approaching our pack.� Kagome smiled at the �our� and leaned into Sesshomaru as
they declined. She could see the small clearing that Ah-Un was in and could
just make out two small yellow and green spots that ran about the dragon. As
they descended Rin and Jaken stood before Ah-Un awaiting their masters� return.
When Sesshomaru and Kagome touched ground Rin ran forward a great smile
stretched across her face.
�Lord
Sesshomaru!� She squealed as she bowed low before him. �I am so happy you have
returned, milord! How was your trip?� Rin�s eyes darted between Kagome and
Sesshomaru but she didn�t ask straight out what was going on. And with Jaken
around she didn�t have to.
�Filthy, miko ningen!� Jaken came scurrying up to Sesshomaru
and Kagome. �What are you doing touching my lord in such a manner?! Remove
yourself from his person at once!�
�Jaken.� Sesshomaru said in warning, giving an icy glare to
his toad vassal.
Jaken looked up
at him with a pout forming at his beak. �But, my lord!�
�Silence, Jaken.
I will not have you speaking to the alpha female of this pack in any disrespectful
way. I have given her permission to punish you as she sees fit if you are in
anyway insolent to her. Understood?�
Jaken�s lips
quivered and his eyes filled with tears. �Hai,
master.� Sesshomaru walked past Jaken guiding Kagome away from the toad
and to speak with his ward. �Oh, my Lord Sesshomaru!
How you treat your loyal servant with so much hostility!� He whined to himself
before turning and following his master.
�Rin, you know
Kagome.�
Rin lifted her
shining face to her lord and the lady beside him. �Hai. Hello, Lady Kagome! Why are you with Lord
Sesshomaru? Are you going to stay with us?�
Kagome smiled
warmly at Rin and kneeled down so they were on the same level. �Yes I am. I
have chosen to join your pack.�
�Yay!� Yelled
Rin as she leapt into Kagome�s arms. �You can be my mommy and pick
flowers with me, and help me feed Ah-Un and help me tease Jaken because he�s sooo funny when he gets annoyed. And then you can marry my
Lord Sesshomaru and we can be a big happy family and then we can get a neko pet and-� Kagome had been smiling and agreeing with
what Rin was saying up until she had said the bit about Sesshomaru. Her entire
body tensed and she had a huge urge to look up at Sesshomaru but kept her eyes
trained on the energetic girl before her. She smiled weakly at her and chuckled
nervously.
�Eh heh. That sounds�wonderful Rin. What do you want to do
first?� She asked hoping the girl never said anything about her and Sesshomaru
again.
�Let�s pick
flowers! I haven�t finished the crowns for Ah-Un. I�m almost done with the one
for Ah but I haven�t even started Un�s!�
�I would be
honored to help you with Ah-Un�s crowns.� She said while taking Rin�s hand and
leading her away, taking special care not to look up at Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru
listened to his energetic ward welcome the new member. He nodded when Rin
suggested Kagome should be her mother. Rin needed female influence if she was
to become a proper woman and a ningen female would be best since she would
respond better than a demoness would to Rin�s wants and needs.
He raised a
delicate eyebrow at the suggestion of Sesshomaru marrying the ningen Kagome. He
wasn�t quite sure what that was but to the best of his knowledge it was similar
to demon�s life mates. He restrained his urge to shake his head. He could never
have a human as a life mate. He would be a laughing stock, first the ice cold,
human hating Sesshomaru takes on a human ward and now marries a human female? Unthinkable. Kagome would have to be more powerful than any
demoness he had ever met, and he had met some impressive demoness, though none
with the integrity to treat his human ward with decency.
He watched
Kagome smile and laugh with his Rin and wondered. What would it be like to have the devotion she gives to my brother
given to me? What would it be like to hold her sweet innocence as she slept? He
could admit to himself that she was pleasing to look at, for a human, and that
she smelled good since she had this addiction to cleaning herself. He would
never lower himself to mate with her, but he could allow himself to wonder and
imagine though he would die a thousand painful deaths before he ever admitted
it out loud.
�Maybe I can
make her more powerful. Let�s see how worthy she can become as I train her.
With my expertise and the potential she has I have a chance of finding out what
it would be like to have her�� With a wicked grin that no one saw he began
planning a way to make her stronger.
