Chapter Two: Sorry Won't Bring her Back
Inuyasha held the bouquet of lilies against his chest nervously. A smile kept blossoming and falling off his lips at the excitement bubbling up inside him at being able to sneak away from the hospital after attending to a few patients. He had one of his slightly competent interns watching over his patients for the rest of the nights in case anything happened. But hopefully nothing major would drive his intern to page him and deter him from his plans.
Inuyasha had spent tortuous hours planning up this moment and had decided earlier that night that tomorrow he would propose to his long-time girlfriend. But as he bid Ms. Amu goodnight before handing the night nurse his clipboard, he realized that it’d be more of a pleasant surprise if Kikyou walked off the stage to see her boyfriend down on one knee.
Sure he could still charm her with the violinist he booked at the froufrou restaurant he made reservations for tomorrow; but it didn’t smack of the spontaneous nature that the demure woman had first fallen for. pushing one here and there to make sure that all was in place before he knocked once more on Kikyou's dressing room door. "What is going on?" he muttered to himself and after waiting another minute he opened the door.
"Oi Kikyou didn't you hear me knock on the door," said Inuyasha annoyed then he paused as he saw Kikyou's hairdresser sitting on a stool crying. "Oh Inuyasha-sama," said the hairdresser and fell into his arms.
"What's wrong Kumi?" Inuyasha asked patting her back.
"It's so terrible," sobbed Kumi her face buried in his shirt.
"What's terrible Kumi? Where is Kikyou?" Inuyasha questioned. Uneasiness tingled down his spine in what could only be a 'bad' feeling.
"She's... she's..." and before she could finish he heard the electronic high pitched ring of his beeper go off.
He looked down to see that it was the hospital, and they needed him to come down there immediately. "Damn," Inuyasha muttered under his breath and quickly sat Kumi down on the stool. "I'm sorry but I have to go. Please tell Kikyou that I will return as soon as possible," he nonchalantly tossed the words over his shoulder and walked out the door, leaving a despondent hairdresser to her own devices.
SOMEWHERE
Kagome wondered why she could not pierce through the inky darkness that surrounded her. She could occasionally hear sound drifting through to her but only bits and snatches. 'Why can't I see anything,' she thought to herself and tried to recall what had happened in the last twenty-four hours.
'I remember... remember after eating dinner with my friends I was taking Kikyou to her concert. Kami she's a good dancer,' thought Kagome admiringly and through the inky darkness she saw a spotlight fall on Kikyou. She was dressed in baby blue ballerina outfit, her hair pinned up in a bun exposing her graceful neck.
Kagome crawled nearer to see her performance. "Kikyou," she whispered and watched as Kikyou turned her head in surprise. "Kagome you surprised me," said Kikyou. "Kikyou," Kagome whispered again as she stumbled to her feet. "What Kagome, did Inuyasha bother you again? I told you if you leave him alone then he'll leave you alone," said Kikyou chuckling.
"It wasn't that, it was just that I was worried about you," Kagome frowned.
"Why are you worried about me? I'm perfectly fine," Kikyou smiled but this time blood dribbled from her lips and down her chin, "Perfectly fine."
Kagome cried out in horror and ran to Kikyou's crumpled form only to be hit with memories of the car accident flashing through her head like snapshots. A red light, an empty road, a smiling Kikyou, and then...a blinding light. Cruel laughing eyes behind the baboon mask.
'Kikyou... what about Kikyou?' thought Kagome frantically. She turned her head to look at Kikyou and saw her broken form lying heavily across Kagome, blood soaking the side where a piece from the door pierced it. "KIKYOU!" Kagome screamed and woke up with a jerk.
"Kagome are you all right?" came Sango's warm, caring voice.
"Ss... Sango? Is that you?" said Kagome and tried to turn her head towards her friend but that only made the throbbing pain in her head increase.
"Don't," Sango insisted and stood up so that she was now in Kagome's line of vision.
"Kikyou... please tell me that she isn't... isn't..." Kagome couldn't finish as warm tears pricked at the corner of her eyes.
Looking at Sango's face, Kagome already knew. But she needed to hear the words. "Kagome I'm sorry but she's..." abruptly the door to Kagome's hospital room opened with a crash.
"You killed her! You killed her," Inuyasha hissed angrily as he entered the room. He was making his way to her bed, but Miroku grabbed him from behind and pinned his arm behind his back.
"Sango a little help here," implored Miroku as he kept his grip on his struggling friend.
Sango quickly rushed to join Miroku as they tried to hold Inuyasha back. "She didn't kill her Inuyasha," said Sango.
"Then who was in the driver seat? Who drove through a red light? Who survived through the accident? I'll tell you. It was Kagome Higurashi, Kikyou's best friend," he twisted the words out between gritted teeth. Hatred oozed from every word.
"Inuyasha!" yelled Sango, but then Kagome halted her words with a wave of her hand.
"He's right. Kami I hate that fact but he is," sorrow crept onto her face. Kagome turned her head with difficulty to look at them, "I shouldn't have rushed. I should have just waited but... but there was no one there and Kikyou needed to get there on time."
"There must have been someone there if you ended up in a car accident that killed Kikyou," eyes narrowed in a deadly lock on Kagome's face. A low pitched growl rose from the depth of his chest signaling his hostility towards the girl on the hospital bed whose stupidity had just been the cause of his girlfriend's death.
Kagome closed her eyes and took a deep, shaky breath before opening her eyes again as she gathered courage. "If I could do it all over again then I would have just waited for the light to change. I would have been more careful. I'm so... so sorry Inuyasha," a fresh wave of tears coming on.
Inuyasha wouldn't accept her apology and snapped out his rejection. "Sorry won't bring her back Kagome and now I won't be able to give her that," and then pulled something from his pocket. He threw it on her bed in disgust before jerking his arms from Sango and Miroku's grip and leaving the room.
"I know," Kagome softly whispered and closed her eyes against the pain in her head that was building into an unbearable level.
"Kagome ignore him," said Sango as she sat back down. Kagome only shook her head slightly back and forth, not bothering to open her eyes.
"Please I want to be alone," Kagome whispered.
"Of course, if that's what you want," said Sango concern in her voice.
"Yes please," and this time Kagome opened her eyes to offer Sango a watery smile although anyone could read pain and guilt behind her glassy eyes.
"Sure, Kagome," said Sango and kissed Kagome's forehead, "I'll be back tomorrow to check up on you." Kagome nodded her head, her eyelids dragging down already prepared to sleep once more.
NEXT DAY
Kagome awaken to the feeling she was being watched. She turned her head slightly and winced at the pain before her eyes settled on blue ones. "You're awake, I'm so glad, honey," Kouga spoke in a lowered voice filled with concern before kissing her playfully on the lips. "Kouga, why... why are you here in my bedroom?" said Kagome looking confused, but then it hit her, this wasn't her bedroom but her hospital room.
...She had been in an accident.
Kouga looked at her sympathetically as he saw the realization of the night before coming back to her. "Damn, I thought it was all a nightmare," she said and smiled sadly before her fingers bumped up against something hard.
She wondered what it was, and her fingers lightly brushed against a small velvet box. 'This must be Kikyou's engagement ring. I... I can't let Kouga see this,' thought Kagome and engulfed the box with her palm and pulled it closer to her so that he wouldn't find it.
"I'm sorry I took so long, but our band had a gig, and I didn't know about the accident till I was on stage. I tried to cancel it but the pack needed me. I'm glad you're all right though," said Kouga smiling but she could see the worry in his eyes.
"I'm fine, just perfectly fine," but tears welled up in her eyes as she remembered the dream of Kikyou saying just those same words before she crumpled to the ground, dead.
"Kagome," Kouga breathed, concern radiating from his words.
"If I could, I would exchange my life for hers. She had so much to live for; I don't," said Kagome. She closed her eyes in an attempt to hold off the inevitable tears.
"That's not true," Kouga fingertips brushed the hair from her face, but then paused when he sniffed the air, "Inuyasha was here wasn't he. He was the one who made my Kagome cry."
Kagome tried to shake her head no, knowing that Inuyasha had been through enough already, but her neck felt so stiff and tender. "Please don't," Kagome begged, opening her eyes and training them on Kouga, "I've caused enough trouble for him, so please don't cause more."
Kouga tilted his chin up stubbornly, ready to refuse her plea, but he didn't want to cause Kagome anymore pain and suffering. "Of course Kagome," Kouga relented. Then, "Did you see the driver that hit you?"
Kagome shivered visibly remembering those maliciously laughing eyes, but that's all she could remember. She didn't want to remember the rest or she was sure her blood would turn to ice because she knew that person. "I know it was a man, that's all," said Kagome with difficulty his manical laughter echoing through her ears, "I'm sorry."
"That's okay, honey," Kouga reassured her as he pulled her up slightly into his arms. Kagome wanted to be comforted so badly but the thought of being comforted made her feel guilty. She was glad when the door open but change her mind when she saw Inuyasha.
"Inu... Inuyasha what are you doing here?" said Kagome breathlessly. She pulled away from Kouga as if she had been caught making out by her parents even though it was a simple hug.
"I'm your doctor," grumbled Inuyasha begrudgingly as he took a look at her chart on her bed.
"My what?" Kagome gasped sitting up straighter only to wince.
"Your doctor, you know those people who take care of other people until they get better," sarcasm filling his response.
"I'll go see about this, honey," Kouga promised as he glared at Inuyasha. He wasn't sure if he should leave Kagome alone with someone who obviously hated her more then ever.
"Don't worry I won't kill her, because then I'll loose my job," he dismissed Kouga and turned to face Kagome, "Hmm you suffer from whiplash, a dislocated shoulder and fractured leg from where your body was thrown against the car door, bruises on the left side of the body and some soft tissue damages," Inuyasha read from his clipboard.
Kagome had a sinking feeling that he enjoyed reading off her injuries. But some of her injuries she felt more then others. "Do you suffer from nightmares involving the accident?" said Inuyasha finally looking up.
Kagome flinched as she remembered Kikyou dressed up in her ballerina costume collapsing into a heap on the ground... dead after saying that she was "perfectly fine." She could feel Kouga's fingers surrounding her hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze, but she shook her head no. 'I'm not going to give you the pleasure of adding something else to that chart,' she thought but she knew that was ultimately spiting her own self too.
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at her as if he smelled the lie in the air. Kagome hoped he didn't sense the lie, and he nodded his head as if he accepted it before putting the metal clipboard back into the bed's slot.
He moved his way casually to the door, and Kagome felt herself relaxing but then he turned around a smirk on his face. "I have scheduled you to see Dr. Hojo, the hospitals psychiatrist, next Tuesday. He can help you with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but I really think you should be worried about any guilt you feel," said Inuyasha.
Then seeing that Kouga's back was turned he mouthed the words, 'I'll never forgive you for killing her. No matter that I am your doctor.' His eyes speaking volumes of the restrained, violent, hatred she felt. Then he left leaving Kagome even more depressed then she was already.
"Ignore him," Kouga stroked her hand in a gentle, pacifying motion.
"Haven't I always," Kagome smiled but in her mind she said, 'But this time my guilt won't let me.'
