You’re Not
Fooling Anyone
“Are ye sure
these rumors are true?” asked the old raspy voice of Lady Kaede.
Inside the
small hut of the protecting priestess sat the rest of the InuYasha clan.
Miroku, Kaede, Sango, Shippo and Kirara were discussing the newfound
information about possible jewel shards around the small fire they made to keep
warm and prepare their rice and vegetables with. While they talked they
consumed their simple meal enjoying the light flavors that danced on their
palettes. Kirara lay sleeping in Sango’s lap and remained out of the
conversation, though she never really said anything anyway except for the
occasional mew.
“Aye, Lady
Kaede. Most of the villages on the mountainside a day’s hike from here are
talking about it. The normally docile beast has become ramped. It’s destroyed
parts of the forest and attacked travelers as well as passing merchants. No one
has been seriously injured as of yet, only a broken arm and one broken leg so
far, but that does not mean that things will not get worse. From what some
people have said the beast has ventured higher into the mountains,” Miroku
spoke between bites of carrot and rice.
“And ye are
sure that it is because the mountain beast has jewel shards Young Monk?”
“Yes, I’m
most certain. This is just like the other time before with Naraku poisoning the
forest demon Royakan. I’m not sure if he has a hand with this beast turning
hostel, but I’m not ruling it out just yet.”
Sango
turned a questioning eye to the houshi in regards about who this Royakan
creature was. She had yet to hear about this demon facing off with her
companions causing curiosity to bubble to the surface. “Royakan?”
“He’s a
demon of hell though normally peaceful despite his label. It was before you had
joined our group my dear Sango.”
“Yeah and
feel lucky! That demon was sure scary with all those wolves he kept spitting
out of his mouth. He attacked after InuYasha sent Kagome away. Boy was that a
mistake,” piped in little Shippo putting down his bowl. “That beast almost had
us for dinner until Kagome came back. InuYasha is nothing without her. Only she
has the power to control that idiot and have him kick butt. I swear he’s such a
BAKA! I should teach him a thing or two about how to treat ladies.”
“My, my
Shippo, you seem very sure about that. Aren’t you afraid InuYasha might punish
you for such a statement?”
Shippo
froze in place at Miroku’s words and gave a slight sweat with the flash backs
of all the poundings he had received from the annoyed hanyou over the years.
The kit’s blunt comments had caused a number of lumps to appear of his little
skull and reliving them all in one second was enough for him to take back his
words.
A cold shiver
came over Shippo and unable to control themselves Miroku and Sango broke out in
laughter. The thoughts and expressions of the young fox demon were too much to
bear even for old Kaede as she let out a chuckle. From embarrassment Shippo too
laughed at him self. As the laughter settled down the priestess went back to
business.
“If ye are
absolutely sure about this ye should try and set out the day after tomorrow
towards the mountains. This journey will be a difficult one going up the path
to the top where this beast may now preside. Ye need to be well prepared and
rested.”
“Aye, Lady
Kaede. I’ve heard stories in my village about that mountainside. It’s swarming
with monsters, some we may have never even seen before,” Sango stated.
“Ah, it’s
not too bad. I did grow up around there you know. As long as you have someone
strong, like my dad, you’ll be fine. For the most part the demons there don’t
even bother each other,” Shippo proclaimed. He was boasting with confidence as
he spoke in remembrance of his father and how he protected him as a little pup.
“But that was without the influence
of Naraku. Those beasts could be completely different from what you remember,”
explained Miroku. “As you’ve seen with his miasma any timid creature can turn
into a killing machine and even loved ones will turn on one another.”
“Oh, yeah.”
A cold
silence fell on the room as each person stopped eating and remembered their own
misfortunes caused by Naraku. His love for causing misery did not by pass
anyone within the hut. Between lost loved ones, mental torture, physical
despair, cursed lineage, and the over all frustration of the horrid hanyou’s
cowardly tactics to over throw any plans leading to his eventual demise, there
was no surprise every heart in that room was full of self doubt and wonderment
over why Kami would allow such a being to roam his lands.
With a
heavy sigh Kaede broke the agonizing silence and changed the subject back to
the current dilemma.
“Do not
tell InuYasha about any of this yet. We do not need him rushing into this being
unprepared. It won’t be an easy task to get up into the mountains. Ye need to
be careful and consider the colder temperatures, different beasts and the
chance of getting caught in a blizzard or avalanche. InuYasha is not one to
listen to reason and will jump into this blindly.”
“So very
true, Lady Kaede. We’ll have to keep this quiet for a little while until we’ve
at least gathered the supplies.” Miroku knew the task of keeping their current
conversation from InuYasha was solely up to him and wondered just how he was
going to do that. As soon as InuYasha sat to eat he was bound to push for the
information until the Monk spilled his knowledge or some blood. With a heavy
sigh he hoped for some kind of distraction to help with his task.
Sango
stepped in changing the subject. “Speaking of InuYasha, shouldn’t he be back by
now with Kagome? It’s getting pretty late and their food’s already cold.”
“That
hopeless romantic probably took the long way back to the village. He can’t
stand it when she leaves and then refuses to give her up once she’s returned.
He’s been hanging around me far too long. Soon he’ll be the new ladies’ man of
the group.” Miroku sighed with a shrug as if he was sad to forfeit his title.
Sango let
out a small growl under her breath. She wanted so badly to smack him up side
the head with her hiraikotsu but knew he didn’t say or do anything horribly
bad. It was just a statement meant as a joke among friends. Of course she
thought wrong as the demon slayer jolted out of her thoughts as a hand gently
stroked her backside.
“Isn’t that
right my little Sango?”
“Hentai!” Now able to use the boomerang without a second
thought she gladly gave the lecherous monk a lump on the head. “How can he be
the new ladies’ man if you don’t stop ass grabbing? And I’m NOT little!” With a
huff she turned away and stroked Kirara’s fur to calm her nerves.
“You’ll never
learn.” Little Shippo smirked at Miroku tenderly rubbing his head. Even though
it was an everyday occurrence watching the monk get hurt would never grow old.
Kaede closed
her eyes silently asking to remain sane among these crazy young people. It was
enough that she was up in years, but to live amongst these riley young folk,
keep everything in order and sort through all the side drama of their lives
gave her a head ache. She hoped Naraku would be dealt with soon so that they’d
get married and leave her alone till they had children for her to spoil.
No, she did
not have any children of her own, but with all that’s she had to put up with
she wouldn’t be denied the title of ‘Grandmother’ amongst their off spring. A
warm smile crept upon her face at the thought of all the little lives that
would be her adopted grandchildren. Quickly the expression disappeared,
replaced with a wide eyed frown at the thought of just how many were sure to be
born. Maybe the idea of being a grandmother was a little too much to think
about at the moment.
Everyone’s
attention turned to the door as the sound of laughter wandered into the hut.
Kagome and InuYasha had returned from the well, their game of tag almost over
with Kagome in the lead avoiding her friend with all her might.
“I’m gonna get you Kagome!!!”
“Not unless
you can catch me!”
Kagome
darted behind a large rock trying to catch her breath as he jumped in the air
to finish the distance between them landing on top of the boulder.
“Ha!” he
shouted.
The young miko threw her backpack at InuYasha. The unexpected assault
of the book bag startled him causing his to fall backwards to the ground
unceremoniously.
“Ha, HA!”
she shouted back at him and continued running toward the hut.
By now
everyone was at the door watching the whole scene. Shippo wanted badly to play
but Miroku kept him in place to allow them their fun. Moments like this were
few and far between without being interrupted by children.
Kagome and
InuYasha didn’t notice the others watching them as they focused on avoiding the
other, or catching the other in InuYasha’s case.
“You’ll
never get me InuYasha. I’m too much for ya!!” she
laughed at the dog demon.
“You wanna bet!” he said as he shook off the dirt from his
clothing and took another jump in the air landing in front of his target.
Kagome let out a small shrill of playfulness as she turned to run.
To her
dismay she tripped over a small rock falling towards the ground. InuYasha took
to speed to catch her but went tumbling down along with her. Kagome was now
nose to nose on top of InuYasha breathing in all of him, as he did the same.
The playfulness ended abruptly as a daze came over them both. ‘How could a simple game of tag bring things
to this point?’ ran through their minds.
As if
petrified, they laid there, one on top of the other. Eyes wondered ever so
slightly over each other’s features. The two were just barely breathing as
their hearts pumped faster with each passing second.
InuYasha couldn’t get enough of the
view that lay on top of him. He could feel more of her than ever before, each
curve of her chest and hips, each inhale and exhale of her breath, and the beat
of her heart, which felt to match his. His eyes could see the valley of her
breasts, the plumpness of her lips, the shines in her hair, the sparkle and
confusion in her eyes and the redness of her cheeks from the surprise and shock
of the fall and him protecting her from the hard ground. All of this tempted
him to do something that he never thought possible, and from what his nose was
telling him, Kagome felt the same.
She
couldn’t think clearly. There were too many sensations all at once. Anger for
falling and being caught, confusion for the look in the hanyou’s eyes, and
desire for all that she could feel of this demon she was on top of. He looked
delicious under her, the way his silver hair shone in the purple haze of the
evening light, the way his fanged lips looked so hungry, and all the emotion in
his eyes. She couldn’t help but lean into him closer taking in his scent. Her
mouth even began to water.
At that
point their eyes meet, the world stopped and everything was still. In that
moment it was only the two of them trapped in a second that would last a
lifetime as nature persisted to take its course pushing them to lean in closer
to each other.
The only
thought that ran through their minds was ‘Could
this be real?’ They were a breath away from touching lips as both breathed
in for the anticipated moment bound to happed. Kagome leaned in further, her
soft breath touching his, eyes closed. ‘What
are you doing Kagome? He’s in love with Kikyo!’
He watched
her lean in with her eyes shut. Her scent and arousal filled his senses to the
brink of insanity. There was nothing he wanted more in all his days than this
exact moment. He tossed logic out the window, ignored all complications of what
might be to focused on the right now and closed his
eyes. ‘This is crazy. She’ll never stay
with a filthy hanyou like me. At least I’ll have this one moment.’
“It’s a
wonderful evening don’t you think my dear Sango?” Miroku knew exactly where
this was going and broke their connection with his booming voice.
“Wha? Oh, yes indeed Miroku, such
a wonderful night.” Trying not to miss a beat, Sango continued with the monk’s
last minute conversation.
Startled,
wide eyed and red faced, both InuYasha and Kagome struggled back on their feet
dusting off any dirt trying to play off the situation as nothing at all.
“We were
only playing tag.” InuYasha blurted out to the group standing at the door of
the hut.
“Yeah and I
fell but InuYasha acted as a cushion for me so I wouldn’t get hurt.” Kagome
stated.
“I never
asked what you were doing. I only made a comment about the night.” Miroku spoke
in a mocking tone that seeped through his knowing lecherous smile. With a
raised brow he dared InuYasha to try and continue the argument of who knew
what, but received no reply.
An awkward
silence fell between the divided friends. Shippo though, not paying much
attention to anything ran to Kagome and jumped in her arms. “Next time can I
play too? That looked like a lot fun!”
Kagome
laughed at the little kitsune thankful for the broken silence. “Of course you
can Shippo.”
InuYasha
smiled at the little pup and rubbed his head in thanks too for the end of that
moment. “So now, what’s for dinner?”
“We made
some rice and vegetables that was given to us by the villagers. It’s pretty
good though it’s nothing like what Kagome makes for us.” Holding a still sleepy
Kirara, Sango went on about the meal they prepared. “Unfortunately it’s cold
now.”
“That’s
fine. Sounds great, maybe we can make the soup still too…”
It was then
that InuYasha heard the screeching of the Shinidamachuu that were Kikyo’s
collectors. He turned in their direction to hear the demons better. They were
calling him to her for a long awaited conversation. Lucky for him no one else
was able to hear them.
“InuYasha,
what’s wrong?” Kagome asked.
“I, um,
forgot something in the forest, by the well. I’ll be right back.” And with that
he was off into his forest for his meeting with Kikyo leaving everyone else
behind. He never stopped to look back at the group and failed to see Kagome’s
eyes hurt filled eyes.
As she
watched him run into the dark forest the time traveling miko
turned to her dirt covered backpack and picked it up. She knew exactly why he
left even though she didn’t see the soul collectors. It was the only reason
InuYasha ever went into the woods without her. ‘Kikyo.’ As she held her pack she
took one last look at the trees they were jumping through moments ago and
turned back to the group.
With a fake
smile and fake happiness obvious to everyone she asked Sango if she wouldn’t
mind taking a bath in the hot springs.
Her reasoning was because she was dirty from the game of tag, though Sango knew
all she really wanted was some girl time. She agreed and they gathered the
bathing supplies as Kirara followed behind, still tired, on wobbly feet.
Now there
was only Miroku, Kaede and Shippo. Once again Kaede was the first to speak.
“So ye felt
her presence did ye Monk?”
“Hai, I
felt that breaking their moment before the collectors came for InuYasha would
be less painful for dear Kagome. Anything too personal would have been murder
to the young girl.”
“Hmm.”
“Why do you
suppose he continues to do this to her?” asked Shippo.
“All I can
say is that he’s likely confused, not wanting to let go of the past to be able
to embrace the future.” Miroku sighed at the thought of his friend’s
predicament. He himself had gotten into sticky situations with the opposite
sex, but none like this. Even if he wanted to he could not help InuYasha with
his decision. It was his burden alone to bear, and Miroku hoped that he would
make the right one, whatever the hanyou felt that was.
The three
looked on into the distant in silence. There was no need to talk, they all knew
what the other would say being in this situation many times before. It felt
like being trapped in a bad case of déjà vu for which there was no escape.
Leaving
their elder where she stood, both Miroku and Shippo walked towards the village
passing Kaede’s hut. It was much too early to retire for the evening, so they
decided to take a long walk to think over the night’s happenings and what was
to come the next day in preparation for their journey. Miroku knew the kit’s
knowledge of the mountain area would help in collecting the jewel shards
without much hassle and planed to gain as much information as possible before
the night came to a close.
Alone, Kaede
turned to the heavens looking to the stars with a heavy heart. In a whisper not
even demons could hear, she lifted up a simple prayer of guidance for the young
souls around her. ‘What are ye up to now
sister? When will ye rest in peace and leave those two alone?’

LadyCash: Thank you so much
for reading “In the Mountains.” I’m really trying to show InuYasha and Kagome in

a wimpy person. Thankz for noticing basically!
