Chapter 2: The Search
Their movements were frantic. The tension in the air was thick as the villagers searched the area around the village. The moon was not full that night, which only served to make their task even harder. But the one thing that hindered them the most was their fear of the very person they were searching for. Before sending them off to look, Inuyasha took great care in stressing the importance of not getting too close to him. When asked why, he did not bother to hide the truth.
“I will not lie to you. The man you are searching for is a demon. He is a dog in human form and he is very powerful. He is absolutely ruthless towards humans and while he will do his best to avoid you, he will not hesitate to kill you if you provoke him.”
There was one thing puzzling the villagers about what Inuyasha said, however.
“Remember, when you find the silver-haired demon, DO NOT APPROACH OR CONFRONT HIM! You are to seek out either Rin or myself, and guide us to the area where you found him.”
That statement left the men of the village puzzled. If this demon is so dangerous, why are we to seek a human girl to help us?

As the villagers left to search for Sesshomaru, Inuyasha watched them closely. He could smell their fear, which he hoped would be enough to ensure that the men would follow his orders.
Rin looked frantic as she held Jaken’s wounded body in her arms. She picked herself up off of the ground and made her way towards Inuyasha, still refusing to relinquish Jaken’s body, clutching it like a little girl would clutch a doll. The Staff of Two Heads dragged on the ground behind her.
“Inuyasha?”
The half-demon turned his head towards her. “What’s wrong?”
“Do you think they’ll find Lord Sesshomaru?”
Inuyasha sighed. “It’s not whether or not they’ll find Sesshomaru that worries me. It’s what might happen when they do.”
“What do you mean?” The girl’s voice immediately went into a state of panic. “You don’t think they’ll try to hurt Lord Sesshomaru, do you?”
“I’m more worried about Sesshomaru hurting one of them. I mean, let’s face it, Rin. Sesshomaru isn’t exactly known for his fondness of humans.”
“I know my Lord Sesshomaru, Inuyasha. He won’t hurt them.” Her voice had returned to normal.
Inuyasha sighed. He should’ve realized that Rin wouldn’t be the one to try and talk about Sesshomaru’s faults to. When it came to his older brother, the girl was unbelievably naïve. But he couldn’t blame her for that. After all, if it hadn’t been for Sesshomaru, the girl would be dead. She owed her life to him, and it was pretty obvious to anyone who knew the circumstances that she was (in Inuyasha’s point of view, hopelessly) dedicated to her Lord Sesshomaru.
“Why didn’t you tell them about you and Lord Sesshomaru’s relationship?”
He frowned. “Because there’s no relationship to speak of. You should know that.”
“You know what I mean. Why didn’t you tell them that the ‘silver-haired demon’ was in fact your older brother?”
“Half-brother. And the reason I didn’t tell them is because the less these villagers know about me, the better. All they need to know is that I’m a half-demon who lives in and protects their village. The fact that I have a demon for a brother is none of their concern.”
“Hmmm.” Rin was silent as she turned on her heel and made her way back to the hut.
“Where are you going?” Inuyasha asked.
Rin answered without turning to face him. “Back to the hut. Master Jaken needs medical attention.”

Kagome quietly comforted her daughter as she waited for Inuyasha to return. The little girl was still frightened somewhat, but now she was also confused about why Rin had so readily abandoned her after hearing about a small demon wielding a staff with two heads.
“Mama, why did Rin run away?”
Kagome sighed. “Well, Kaede, the demon that the villager described is someone that Rin knows very well. It has been a long time since she has seen him, which is why she ran out of here so quickly.”
“But she never told me about any demon, and we talk all the time.”
“This demon is very special to Rin. Although she did not know him and his companion for very long, she owes them both a great debt and therefore is very loyal to both of them.”
“Oh.” The little girl’s face was contorted into a frown as she attempted to make sense of what her mother had told her. “So, she must care about them a lot.”
Kagome turned her gaze to face out of the open doorway. “Yes, she cares for them both very much. Although I’m not too sure they feel the same about her.”
Just then, Rin came through the doorway, clutching something in her arms. Kaede immediately broke away from her mother and made her way toward Rin, saying, “My mama told me about your demon friends and how important they are to you, so I forgive you for leaving me while I was scared.”
Unfortunately, Rin’s focus was not in the room, so when Kaede finished speaking, she turned to her and said, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. What were you saying?”
Once again, Kaede was initially surprised, but then she growled her displeasure and promptly turned away, walking to the back of the hut and sitting down. Her mother tried to speak to her, but Kaede refused to listen. If there was one thing she had inherited from her father, it was stubbornness. Kagome sighed, and then turned to Rin, showing her displeasure at Rin’s behavior in a frown. “What’s that, Rin?”
Rin knelt down and laid the object she was carrying down on the ground directly in front of Kagome. Her voice was hollow as she replied. “Master Jaken.”
Kagome looked in horror as she looked over Jaken‘s wounds. The poor demon had three deep slash marks across his chest. He obviously had lost a lot of blood, and his breathing was becoming shallower by the second. Kagome’s mind quickly snapped into rescue mode. “Rin.” The girl looked at her with hollow eyes. As she looked into them, Kagome realized that Rin had made herself emotionally hollow. This was her way of dealing with her anguish. By detaching herself for the time being, she was able to help and do what was needed. Kagome hadn’t seen that look in Rin’s eyes since the priestess Kaede had passed. She must be having a rough time. I hope she’ll be okay.

Rin listened intently as Kagome told her what she would need to patch up Jaken.
“First, I want you to go down to the river and get some water. Go do that now.”
Rin was gone before Kagome got the word “now” out of her mouth. She moved as fast as she could without panicking. She had to stay calm, detached. If she didn’t, she would undoubtedly panic and mess up along the way, which could spell doom for Master Jaken. Every moment that she spent calm was a moment longer that Jaken got to live.
* * * * *
As Kagome took a closer look at Jaken’s wounds, she became more and more horrified.
His ribs had been broken before the assailant had even slashed him with its claws. His left arm was both broken and dislocated from his shoulder, and in addition, he had an enormous wound on the back of his head, like he had been thrown against a wall. He had some minor cuts and bruises all over, and his eyes were glazed over due to the blood he had lost. It’s a wonder he didn’t bleed to death. Who would do this to him?
She traced her hand along the wound. They were sharp and jagged, due to his rough skin. They weren’t deep, but combined with his broken ribs, they were very serious, possibly even life threatening. Where is Rin? Does it really take that long to get water? I know she’s in shock, but come on!
She looked at Jaken one more time and began to question why she was helping him in the first place. Jaken was Sesshomaru’s vassal; he’d done his best to be helpful to Sesshomaru when the latter had coveted the Tessaiga, which meant that he had tried to hurt them on numerous occasions before Sesshomaru gained first the power of the Meidou Zhangetsuha and later on Bakusaiga. So why was she so interested in helping him?
Because it’s for Rin. She had to remind herself that while Jaken had been cruel and unforgiving towards her and her friends, he had been somewhat kind and protective of Rin, albeit begrudgingly from Rin’s description of her travels with Sesshomaru. Rin cares for him a lot, and if anything were to happen to him or Sesshomaru, she would be devastated. So that’s why I have to help him. To keep Rin sane. Even to her, it seemed like she was reaching.

The villagers’ nerves were almost shot as the night wore on. Just as they began to lose hope and turn back, they heard a loud yell. One of the men had found something.
* * * * *
Rin made her way back to the hut, a pail of water cradled in her arms. As she walked, she looked ahead and saw a group of men headed towards Kagome and Inuyasha’s hut. She frowned. They must’ve found something.
* * * * *
Inuyasha looked at the sight in front of him. The twin headed dragon that traveled with Sesshomaru was lying in front of him. The demon was alive, but it had an enormous gash on its left side. It also looked like one of its legs was injured as well; if not broken, then badly sprained. Fortunately, that was all the injuries it had sustained. The demon was resilient; Inuyasha had to give it that.
“Did you find anything else?”
“Over here.” The villager had a nervous overtone to his voice as he led Inuyasha through the woods. The shrubbery scratched at Inuyasha’s feet as he followed the man. An all-too familiar scent came to Inuyasha’s nose, forcing him to sigh uncomfortably. Soon, they came to a clearing. What Inuyasha saw made him sick to his stomach.
“Is there anything else you want me to do, Inuyasha?” The villager’s words stole Inuyasha’s attentions for a moment.
He turned his head towards the man and said, “The only thing I want you to do now is gather up everyone and go back to the village. Tell Lady Kagome that I will be returning home soon, and most importantly, make sure that Rin stays in the village and comes nowhere near here. I don’t care if you have to stand guard outside the door. Just keep her away from this area, okay?”
“Understood.” The man hurried away, as though he was glad to finally go home and rest.
Inuyasha waited until the man had left, and then turned his head back towards the uncomfortable sight in front of him. The last thing he needed was for Rin to see this.
There was a gigantic dog lying on its side, badly injured and obviously unconscious. Its breathing was shallow, and its eyes had rolled back into its head. There were deep purple bruises where something had held it by its neck, and it was adorned with additional bruises all over its body. Inuyasha was dumbfounded. If he hadn’t already seen Jaken and the twin-headed demon, and hadn’t been able to recognize Sesshomaru’s scent, he would’ve forced himself to assume that it was some other dog demon. He had never seen anything like this happen to a demon as powerful as Sesshomaru, and the fact that it was Sesshomaru made it even more unsettling. As he looked at his brother, broken and bruised, Inuyasha could only do one thing. He walked towards Sesshomaru, placing his hand on the demon’s nose. He forced himself to ask the question that had come to mind the moment that he was certain that it was his brother that he was seeing.
“Who did this to you?”
