Chapter 2: An Ironic Friendship
Day Three, Inu Yasha’s Forest, two days later
“How dare she!?!” The angry miko seethed. “How DARE she!?! How could she do this to her most loyal fan?!” Sighing, the miko hung her head defeated. “Forcing me to endure two long months of waiting for her newest novel.”She lifted the novel of her despair to the heavens, “Why? Why, Sara Monklik, have you forsaken me ?” she clutched the novel to her chest then slumped over in dramatic anguish, “How can you leave me to face le dreaded cliffy? It wasn’t enough you left only half of the chapter for an excerpt. Oh no. No, you mock me by ending it RIGHT before the smut! Oh the agony!” she released a dry fake sob. “I can’t go on with my life.”The demon lord watched on as if uninterested when he was actually amused by her actions. He never had seen a human, or any being for that matter, so spontaneous.“Really miko, such dramatics are unnecessary.” reprimanded the demon lord calmly.“And what would you know?” she wailed. “I’m left to the tedious task of finding another author among thousands who can captivate me just as much as this one. Until her next novel grace the bookstore shelves of Japan, I will suffer.” she sighed huffed.Sitting up suddenly in realization, Kagome turned towards the lounging lord behind her. “Why are you here anyway? You’ve been bothering me for two days now.” Kagome cocked her head curiously. “Could it be that you have nothing better to do besides drive me insane?” she mocked wickedly.Sesshoumaru wondered at that himself. He will admit it’s entertaining to irritate her when she reads; her with her off the wall antics.Out of all creatures in on this earth, why is it about this simple minded creature that intrigues him so? Was it her childish charisma perhaps? Maybe it’s her daunting ability to switch back and forth between overly expressive temperaments. Or could it be that delicious intoxicating aroma that stirs the need to mount her? Sesshoumaru raised a curious eyebrow. Not sure if he liked where this internal conversation is headed.Sesshoumaru quickly dismissed his thoughts then cocked his head curiously to the side as he countered coolly, “This one wasn’t aware you possessed any sanity to drive away.”Huffing at his insult, Kagome fought the urge to throw her recently finished novel at him but thought better of it. She was alone with the snarky demon after all. Not a situation many people would find safe to chuck anything at anybody, must less the infamous “Killing Perfection”.Her friends believed she was in the hot springs for her usual decade long baths. So of course her body would have rotted away into dust about time they would think to come looking for her.Regardless of his wisecrack comments, Kagome couldn’t say she minded the demon lord’s presence too much. In fact, she was kind of thrilled about it. What was it about her that made her so appealing to the demon lord that would make him seek out her company? Something must be fascinating about her. She wasn’t all that beautiful in her opinion, but she wasn’t ugly. That much she knows for a fact.“Regardless of my lack of sanity, that doesn’t answer my question. Why are you here?” she asked carefully.Your scent miko. That blasted alluring smell that haunts me wherever I go no matter how far I travel away from you. He growled silently to himself in answer to her question.Sesshoumaru has never smelled a lust so invigorating from any female before, especially from one so innocent. The spiciness of lust infused with the sweet decadence of purity. Such a combination was rarest of the rare. It stirred his own lust, the sensation crawling beneath his skin like a curse that could only be quelled by the proximity of her body. He couldn’t tell what he hated more; not being able to get close enough or wanting to get close at all.He watched her fidget under his intense scrutiny while he tried to organize his thoughts. Finally the demon lord decided to give the safest answer he could manage. “This Sesshoumaru finds your company much more preferable to the others. You annoy me less.” He watched her shoulders slump slightly as if disappointed with his vague answer. Before he could assume anything he tested her. “You seem disappointed miko.”She straightened her back and lifted her head stubbornly. “I’m not. Unless of course there is a reason for me to be…”“Hn.”Sesshoumaru offered no encouragement to allow her to assume anything more than what she already suspects. He couldn’t allow this odd relationship of theirs to escalate to something more than it should be. She was a human and he was a demon of great prestige. Just associating with humans was looked down upon and he can’t have it staining his perfect image like it has his father’s. This all was just a simple fascination and nothing more. He’ll get over this little spell she had casted over him soon. But the demon lord must admit it was proving more difficult by the day to stay away when she picks up a novel and goes to her favorite reading spot. Sometimes he found himself there sitting beside her before he knew what he was doing.Kagome watched the demon lord stare far off into the horizon lost in his little complicated world of whatever it was he thought about. He would look so bored most of the time when he sat quietly to himself. It made her wonder if the demon lord ever thought at all. But even looking bored, he was still devastatingly magnificent. Since Sesshoumaru has been seeking her company, Kagome found herself wondering all sorts of things about the demon lord. But he was just so unapproachable that it made it difficult to simply start up a conversation. She had so many questions to ask him. What was his favorite food? What does he do at night when he leaves camp? What was his childhood like growing up? Those type of questions. Then there were the other type of questions like: what do you look for in a woman, or what kind of personality do you look for? You can’t simply ask a guy those question out of the blue unless you were a companion of sorts. But how would she go about befriending the demon lord on a more personal level without imposing? Kagome was usually a very sociable person and can befriend many people easily but with someone like Sesshoumaru, she was at a loss.
She looked to the demon lord who was now studying her; apparently back from his little mental vacation.“Decided to come back to planet earth have you?” she teased with a smile.“Hn.”“What were you thinking about?”Sesshoumaru’s brow lifted in response to her question. “What concern is that of yours?” he asked defensively.“None I guess. I was just trying to make small conversation with you.” She said with a shrug. “Don’t see why I bother.”The demon lord seemed to pause as if considering her comment. “What do you find so fascinating about this particular author miko? This Sara Monklik.” He asked dryly. It took Kagome a minute to realize that the demon lord had asked her a question and was attempting to start a conversation. Of course he completely evaded her question, but at least it was progress.“Well, her series revolves around the various members of a werewolf pack. They were on the verge of eradication and were in desperate search of their life mates to restore their packs population all the while eluding the werewolf hating hunting parties out to snuff out their existence completely. The passion she expresses between the heroes and heroines is so intense, filled with angst, confusion, fear, acceptance… then at last their soul consuming need for one another. And it’s not just the relationship of the leading characters but the struggles they must face alongside each other while they discover and strengthen their love for one another. Then there’s …” she trailed off when she noticed the demon lord had looked off in the distance with a faraway look in his eyes.Taking the hint that he wasn’t interested in hearing all that mushy baloney, she didn’t elaborate any further. But still, he could at least attempt to look interested. He was the one who asked; rude. “Well, never mind that. What about you?” she changed the subject, “What kind of books do you enjoy reading?”“I read various scrolls written by various demon scholar’s perspective in life. Other times I read about the history of my forefathers.”Kagome was awed. She had a feeling he read such things only she didn’t think he’d read it for enjoyment. It was kind hard to find any enjoyment about reading someone’s take on life when it pretty much concludes the same. Life’s a bitch and then you die…as Inu Yasha would so blatantly put it. “I’m guessing you wish to write a few biographies of your own correct? I plan to become a romance author one day.”“Indeed. I do plan to do some writing of my own. About my past accomplishments and share whatever knowledge I feel will be helpful to my lineage. A bloodline is only as great and knowledgeable as their forefathers allow them to be.”Spoken like a true lord. She noted to herself. “That’s so like you.” Kagome smiled sheepishly. “I wish my reasons for writing were as noble. But what is noble about writing explicit literature?” she said suddenly sullen faced.“Your reasons may not be noble miko, but I wouldn’t call them completely selfish reasons either.” the demon lord started quietly as he looked across the field to nothing in particular. “You wish to write for the sake of women much like yourself, correct?”Kagome was taken aback by the sudden question. She thought about it for a moment and understood what he may be getting at. She read to escape the dreary, sometimes painful reality of life and loneliness. To fall deep into the world the author created for women to experience what they couldn’t otherwise. Providing a place where women young or old could always experience something nice and magical with no limits for as long as they have the imagination. That is what Kagome found she wanted to do. Create a world for those women much like her. To give them a magical place to escape to filled with mystery, charm, and seduction. No it wasn’t a noble reason but it was definitely a commendable one.“I guess I never really thought about why I really want to become a writer.” She admitted softly while toying with the pages of her novel in her lap. “I only knew that I want to write about love and passion and share my darkest fantasy with other women out there. To let them know they aren’t alone in their need for something different and forbidden.”“And what are these forbidden desires you wish to share, miko?” the demon lord asked in an unusually husky tone that forced her to meet his hooded gaze. She felt her heart quickened in her chest at his question. Why would he wish to know? He asked as if he wanted to help her fulfill them. And if he did, would she object? And if she didn’t object, where would it lead to? “I’m not really sure how to answer that.” She finally answered.“Indeed.”“Why do you wish to know?” She asked shyly, feeling hopeful for some reason. Hopeful for what, she wasn’t sure. But she couldn’t help but feel so. Could it be that she wished to not only know more about the demon lord but actually have a relationship of sorts with him?The demon lord shrugged his shoulder slightly at her question. “I don’t particularly care but I thought for the sake of your need for conversation I’d put forth an effort to humor you.”Kagome gasped and poked his upraised knee playfully. “Why Lord Sesshoumaru, how considerate of you.” She chuckled. “I never thought you had it in you.”“Hn.” He replied dryly. No humor evident in his voice.Kagome shook his knee gently with a pout. “Aww come on. Don’t be a fuddy-duddy now. You should be considerate more often. It makes you friendlier.”“This Sesshoumaru doesn’t care to be friendlier.” He finished sourly as if the last word left a bad taste in his mouth.“Oh whatever.” She dismissed with a wave of her hand then turned away from him to gather her half eaten snacks and books. “You can stay here and be a sour puss alone while I’m going back to camp to hang with friendlier people.” She said as she went to pick up her blanket but was stalled when the demon lord wouldn’t move his long leg.She tugged and pulled and couldn’t manage to snatch the blanket from beneath the demon lord who did nothing but watch her blankly as if ignorant of what she was trying to do. “Do you mind?” She growled and tugged suggestively.Sesshoumaru simply stared at the miko, waiting.“Sesshoumaru move.” She watched him cock his head to the side while his eyes still pinned her with a bored glare, still waiting for something. Kagome was getting fed up. “Come on Sesshoumaru your doing that on purpose. Your leg isn’t that heavy and you know it. Move.” She pulled again harder. The demon lord shook his head in disappointment and lifted his leg to cross it over his other leg at the ankles comfortably. “The words are excuse me miko. Have the knowledge of common etiquette diminished in your time?” he asked calmly watching her fall harshly on her rump with the blanket thrown haphazardly over her head. He chuckled inwardly.Kagome huffed angrily while snatching the blanket off her head, ruffling her raven locks in a messy mass. “You sir, are a cad.”“Hn.” He responded evenly after her as she stomped out of the clearing. When she was out of ear shot he chuckled lightly.-Kagome stomped back into camp slightly peeved. The words are excuse me, miko. She mocked silently to herself as she shook the leaves out of her blanket then laid it out to plop down in huff.Did he have to be so rude about it? What’s his problem? But then, she was in the wrong for not asking him to move politely. Okay fine she’ll admit that she was wrong all together. And it will eat at her conscious for not admitting that, so she may as well get this over with. No matter how much it galled her, she still owed the demon lord an apology.Huffing loudly, Kagome shot up off her blanket and stomped back out of the clearing all the while confusing her comrades who were watching her silent charade.-Miroku and Sango shared a bemused look amongst each other after watching their friend vacate the clearing. Clearly something was bothering her and they could bet money that it had something to do with the absent demon lord.
“Weird wench.” Inu Yasha scowled after the miko disappeared into the brush.“Maybe. But not without reason I’m sure.” Miroku said curiously. He nudged his favorite warrior with his shoulder. “I’m sure that reason is getting a kick out of confusing our miko.”“Indeed.” Sango agreed with a smirk.
Inu Yasha looked between the slayer and monk suspiciously, completely clueless. “What are you two babbling about?”The pair said nothing but smirked knowingly. Shippou shook his head at the hanyou’s ignorance.Annoyed with their secret humor, Inu Yasha shrugged. “Whatever. All I know is that she better get back here and feed me. I’m gettin’ mighty hungry.” He mumbled then turned in the direction the miko left. “OI WENCH FEE…!!”“I know, I know. Feed me!” Kagome called out before the hanyou could finish as she entered the clearing. “Take a chill pill Yasha.” She sighed in irritation when the hanyou banged the pot with a wooden spoon urging her to speed up her movements.Kagome stormed up to the hanyou and snatched the spoon out of his hand to pop him smartly on the head. “What did I tell you about that? It’s rude.” She hissed as she wagged the wooden spoon at the cowering hanyou then moved to prepare lunch. “Honestly…”-Sesshoumaru entered the clearing a few minutes after the miko and moved to sit beneath his favorite tree beside Ah-Un.
It was surprising that the miko stomped back to where she left him to apologize for her rudeness. He still thought that she was a brash rude mannered onna but at least now the demon lord could say she has gained some of his respect when concerning other things. He took notice of his ward sitting next to the miko’s kit building some odd structure with colorful building blocks of some kind that she had brought from her time. The odd toys were quite efficient in keeping the pups entertained and out of mischief. At first the demon lord believed that the miko would have difficulty raising a young male kitsune by herself. Fox demons, by nature, are a mischievous lot and are a handful to raise as kits even to their full demon parents, so he assumed that Kagome would have an even harder time with the kit. But, after watching her, he’s noticed that she was a quite capable mother figure. In fact she displayed a lot of motherly traits he found that would be useful in Rin’s case. She would make an exceptional governess for his ward should he ever need one, which was now as he thought about it.He watched the miko move about the camp preparing dinner for everyone. She didn’t bother asking anyone what they wanted since she seemed to know what and how they wanted it.Perceptive and motherly. Sesshoumaru mused.“Instead of sitting there being a pain in my tushy, go fetch a rabbit or two…please.” She finished with a tight smile. “And wash up while you’re out. You smell like a puppy.”He watched the hanyou stand and stomp out of the clearing grumbling obscene nonsense to himself.Sesshoumaru inwardly smirked. The miko, unwittingly, held her status as alpha female of this pack well. She provides food for her pack as well as other things to keep her pack mates healthy. Not forgetting to mention that she was a highly educated onna with a fair hand of leadership. She’s gained the respect and adoration of not only her pack but everyone of the local village nearest here. She was a most commendable human indeed. The hanyou returned a few minutes later, covered in dirt and blood as he stomped back into the clearing carrying two plump skinned rabbits ready for cooking and tossed them at Kagome’s feet. He watched the hanyou grin when the miko shrieked in horror. His claw twitched with annoyance.“Keep it up Yasha and you won’t get your share. Now go get cleaned up.” Kagome pointed her spoon in the direction of the hot spring.Instead, the hanyou walked in the direction of the stream nearby to wash his hands. He failed to see the odd metal spoon flying to the back of his head. “Ow wench, what was that for?” he growled rubbing his head.“When I say wash up, I mean from head to toe. That means a bath Yasha. Now hop to it.” she pointed toward the spring again with a wooden spoon still in her hand.“My hands are washed that should be good enough for you.”“Bath.” The miko growled menacingly with a stomp of her foot.Inu Yasha crossed his arms impudently. “I don’t wanna…” His hanyou ears flattened on his head when the woman stormed up to him with a flat glare in her eyes. He turned on his heel to retreat but was a step too late.“Sit.” After watching the hanyou kiss soil, Kagome turned to smile at Miroku who only shook his head and moved to grab the subdued hanyou by his foot and drag him towards the spring pulling up dirt in their wake. Just as they disappeared into the brush the hanyou’s fire rat was thrown back into the clearing. “Thank you.” Kagome hummed as she moved to gather the filthy clothing.Sesshoumaru closed his eyes to meditate all the while paying close attention to the miko’s exact whereabouts as she moved about the camp taking care of various things. The demon lord wasn’t sure how much time passed, but he was alerted when the miko’s proximity grew near. Her aura was carefully brushing his to alert him that his attention was needed. He opened his eyes and took note of miko standing before him with bowl of rice with bloody chunks of rabbit mixed into it. It seems that she had figured out that he preferred his meat raw and bloody instead of cooked. He reached out for the bowl with a nod of acknowledgement. He’d much rather have people gain his acknowledgment than a heartfelt thank-you since the demon lord couldn’t bring himself to thank a human for anything.“You’re welcome.” The miko said quietly before giving the demon lord his space once again.Of course, leave it to the miko to ruin his indifferent mood. “Hn.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
