Chapter 1: You Say Hello
Japan, 1507
„Stop!"
The whole group came to a halt within its movement as she had spoken the single world and turned around to face the young woman. The same young woman who's heavy yellow backpack rested upon her shoulders and who was pushing the pink bicycle at her side and who had stopped as well, staring at an invisible spot right in front of her in the middle of the path they were walking along.
A red figure let themself fall from a nearby tree, landing on their feet next to the woman and wrinkling their nose. The half demon with dogears rose his nose high in the air and looked worried around before his gaze stopped on the woman next to him. "What is it Kagome?", he asked and his hand slid along the tilt of his word which he wore on his hip. A soft breeze came from the forest in front of them and caused the long sleeves of his haori to fly in the wind. Silver hair framed his face and single strands were pushed back on his shoulders.
When she didn't answer he put one hand on her right arm. "Kagome?", he asked again and finally she broke free from her stupor and brown eyes met golden ones.
"It's... nothing. For a moment it was as if I felt something but... it vanished too quickly for me to say what it was", she answered and her voice sounded thin and broken as if she wouldn't believe herself.
"Naraku?" It was the second woman in their group who was speaking now and who was wearing a tightly strapped giant boomerang on her back and who was looking into the deeps of the forest. "Was it is his aura you've felt?" The voice of the demon huntress sounded firm and demanding and Kagome knew, her friend still hold on to hope to find her brother Kohaku und to save his life which was bound to that of Naraku's by the help of a shard of the Shikon No Tama.
"I don't know Sango", she answered truthfully and witnessed the disappointing washing over the face of the other. "I don't know... it was too quickly. But this place here", she looked around and felt how goosebumps spread over her arms, "I feel uneasy about."
For three months they had been searching for a hint which could lead them to the half demon Narau. It had been three long frustrating months and it had looked like as if they would try to hunt ghost. They had stopped in every village, had asked farmers, travelers and monks, had followed even the smallest hints and smallest dawn of hope but in the end it had been for nothing. It seemed as if Naraku had never wandered the earth, as if he had never existed and as if he had never reached with his sinister hand for the Jewel of the Four Souls. They all knew though that appearances are often deceiving. This was nothing but the quiet before the storm.
Eventually they had decided to move further into the land and Kagome had prepared her family for her long absence and that she wouldn't return any time soon. Now, after three month their search had lead them to a chain of mountains which was slowly rising on the horizon in front of them. If they had followed paths which had lead them through juicy green meadows, through fields of rice and along small rivers before, they were now entering a region which was steeper, more stony and the small road lead them into a dark, old forest in front of them. They could see that the forest was embracing the mountain chain like a belt and there was snow already covering the peaks even though it wasn't cold enough for that down in the valley.
But the days grew shorter, the nights became longer and winter wasn't far away. The birds had already moved south and it would seem as if the land stood still to get down to sleep before spring would wake it up again.
Kagome bit her bottom lip and was thinking. Maybe it was nothing that she'd felt and it had been only the atmosphere which had caused for the short hair on her neck to stand to end. This place here, this old, mouldered forest and the sharp jags of the mountains which looked like the fangs of a beast – all of it gave her an uneasy feeling. But it was nothing but a shadow for now, nothing she could put her finger on yet. She would have to be watchful though.
"We should keep going", said the monk, Miroku, who stood next to Sango. Kagome could see the same worry on his face she was feeling. "The nights are cold. We should fing a place where we can make camp before it's getting dark." The group nodded in agreement and kept on walking along the small road. Shippou, the small fox demon and still a child, jumped up and sat down into the small basket at Kagome's bike. The priestess had to smile about that and run her fingers over the demon's head who turned around to her then, a big grin on his face before he turned back to look straight ahead.
She sighed heavily and realized how she was searching for a red haori out of the corner of her eye as the one wearing it and who had already disappeared into the tops of the trees again and who was jumping from one branch to the other.
Inuyasha...
Her thoughts carried her back to that day where her adventure had began. IT had been her 15th birtday. She'd been pulled into the old well on the property of her family and found herself 500 years back into the past once she emerged from it again. A demon had ripped the Shikon No Tama out of her body. Inuyasha, son of a dog demon and a human woman, had woken up from his curse and saved her life. The jewel was stolen and destroyed as she tried to save it. The shards were scattered all over Japan and it was on her now to find every single one of them to make the jewel whole again.
She had found friends while she'd been looking for it:
There was the perverted, but good-natured monk Miroku who suffered from a terrible curse which the half demon Naraku had put on his father and who was threatened to die from his heirloom.
The young demon huntress Sango, which had lost her whole family by a trap set by Naraku and who had to witness how her own brother was manipulated by the evil lord and played like a puppet and who's life was bound to Naraku's now.
The young fox demon Shippou, who came to their group as an orphan and Inuyasha, who had been bound to a tree by a curse 50 years earlier by a priestess with the name Kikyou who had been his first great love before Naraku had played them against each other. Kikyou had lost her life and was born again through Kagome and Inuyasha had been eaten alive by his anger and self-hatred. It had been shortly after her arrival in the medieval time that a witch had brought Kikyou to live again and she, driven by anger and hate, was wandering the earth now.
Yes, they all had suffered because of Naraku and they all had enough reasons to bring the half demon down. But the more they were fighting about him, the more he gathered new strength. On some days Kagome thought they would never be able to gain victory over him. It would seem to her as far too long ago now that she fell into the well and yes, that was four years ago now. Four years in which she had traveled between two times and fought against demons and learned for school exams, four years in which she had looked death into his face more than one time and in which she had chattered with her friends about mean teachers, cute guys and new music stars.
Her face turned into a grimace at thought. Somehow it was grotesque and surreal. The life which she lead was as different as day and night from her friends. And somehow... it got her lonely. She knew that she could trust her friends here in this time. She loved all of her friends by her whole heart, but they didn't even have the slightest idea about the life which she had in the future. They didn't know about cars and they didn't know about exams and papers before she had it explained to them. They didn't know about the pressure which weighted Kagome down every day and every week she spent in medieval Japan.
While all the other had graduated a year ago and soon would start university, Kagome was still stuck at school to repeat last year. She had missed too much – too much for her to keep up with and it didn't seem to get better any time soon.
It was so paradox that she couldn't even grasp it herself. On many days it seemed so unreal, as if she wasn't even there. The truth was that she could easily die here. She could lost her friends. Everything could come tumbling down like a house made out of cards if she would fail. Sometimes it was just too much.
She knew she was here to fulfill her destiny. Her destiny was the Shikon No Tama. As she had destroyed it, the shards had scattered all over Japan and fallen into the hands of humans and demons. Like Koga, for example, a wolf demon who had two splinters in both his legs. But Koga was a friend, an alley, somebody who was just as brave as Inuyasha. But not everybody was as good-hearted as Koga and so, the shards fell into the hands of Naraku – an evil half demon.
But after everything she'd already experienced... it didn't feel right. What would happen if the jewel was complete? What would she do then? Would she go back? Would her journey come to an end? Could she continue her life as if nothing had ever happened? How was she able to forget all of this, to let it behind her and to go back to her old life? What was still existing there from it anyway?
While the trees framing the road got bigger and closer, she kicked against a small stone and only listened halfheartedly to her friends conversations. As she looked up she could see Inuyasha between the bleak branches, a few meters ahead of them.
She didn't want to follow him with her gaze but she couldn't stop herself. It still hurt to think about him with the knowledge that they would never be more than friends – and that it would never change. She remembered the time in which they had seen each other for the first time. At first she had thought that he was dead and that she was trapped in some sort of fairy tale, but when she had touched him and felt the warmth upon his skin and the soft fur covering his ears, she had known it wasn't a fairy tale but very, very real.
Back then she hadn't able to say why she was there, what her destiny was. She wouldn't know where her journey would lead her to. But now after fours years in which she and her friends had fought for peace, love and friendship, after all of their loss and all of their pain... she knew that it wasn't because of Inuyasha. She'd always known that. She had thought as long as he was by her side nothing could ever happen. Nothing would ever change and nothing could come in between them. She had thought. Back then she had thought it was because of him that she was there, that it was because of him why she stood next to his side ready to fight. For her and her freedom.
She remembered the pain as her heart had stopped beating for a short second and how it had felt as if the world had turned upside down – the pain, too big as if she was able to breath.
She had seen how he had kissed her.
That woman who had sealed him to a tree 50 years ago and damned him to eternal sleep.
That woman of who he'd thought betrayed him.
Kikyou.
Kagome Higurashi sighed. It had been fours years since she had seen them. At that moment she had known that she and Inuyasha would never have a chance. But why did her heart still hurt? Why couldn't she move on? She looked at the road ahead of her. She knew the answer. She had never have the chance to have the life of a normal girl. While he friends had dated boys, while they were talking about their first kiss, teachers and homework, Kagome had traveled through the woods of medieval Japan and had fought at the side of her friends against demons. Shippou, the fox demon, Sagnoe, the demon huntress and Mirkou, the monk.
And then there was still Inuyasha.
The half demon, son of Inu No Taisho -Toga-, half brother of Sesshomaru -the Killing Perfection-, child of Izayoi, his human mother.
He was an outsider, someone who'd never be a part of no matter how hard he tried. She could still taste the tears which she had cried because of him. He had hurt her too much, but she also knew that he didn't know, that it wasn't his intention to do so. But every time he looked at her he saw Kikyou... and when Inuyasha couldn't make the decision she did it for him.
"I have to let go of you Inuyasha..."
Fours years. It'd been four years. She was 19 now and still, she didn't feel mature at all. It was foolish to cry over a love which was never meant to be anyway. It still hurt though. It still didn't get better and Kagome knew the only which would help now was to accept that it was never meant to be. After all it had been her who had taken the next step one year ago and who had confronted Inuyasha.
It had been a day in the summer and just minutes before she had arrived in medieval Japan. When she'd reached the edge of the well, a hand had reached for her and pulled her upwards. When the first rays of sun had touched her skin, she had looked up and into Inuyashas face. The sun stood behind him and colored the sky into a rich red and dark orange. She'd been late, she knew that and it was already evening and the trees created long shadows. There laid peace upon the small clearing with the old well which only existed on summer days like today. The birds had sung their songs as if they would say good night to the world.
"Inuyasha..."
His eyes had met hers. It had been only a short moment but it took too long. She had pulled her legs after her and gotten free of his grip before she lowered her eyes and put a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her hands had been searching for the cool, damp rim of the well as she sat down on it, her fingers loosely laced together.
They'd been alone and it had been the perfect moment. While she had spent the day at home and with her family she'd often thought about this moment. She had already chosen the words and had let them rolled over her tongue, she had changed and shaped them until they sounded perfect to her ears but in this moment her voice left her.
The words were gone now and she could hear her blood whooshing inside her ears loudly. There hadn't been any birds any more which had sung and there hadn't been sun, which had warmed up her body. Only she and Inuyasha had exsisted.
"Ow!"
The bicycle which she had hold in both her hands just seconds before suddenly fell down with a loud clash and all she was able to hear now was the rear tire which continued to rotate.
"Sango!", Kagome shouted and went to her friends in whom she had run together with her bicycle. "I'm so sorry", she murmured as she helped the demon huntress to get up again. "I was so lost in thoughts, I- I didn't mean to", she stuttered and felt how her cheeks started to get hot as the first shadows of a blush crept over her face. "It's alright", Sango smiled and looked over her shoulder. "You better look after Shippou though", and she pointed into the direction behind her.
"Oh no", Kagome followed Sango's finger and went up to Shippous side which had fallen out of the basket and it looked like as if he wouldn't know where up and down was. "Shippou, are you alright?", she asked the boy worriedly and he looked green in the face. The fox demon shook his head and tabbed the side of his head twice. "Everything alright!", he smiled up at Kagome. "A bit dizzy", he added once he got up and realized he couldn't keep his balance. Instead of letting him go Kagome pulled him into her arms and pressed him tightly against her body. "I hope you can forgive me for not paying attention", she whispered and felt guild-ridden.
"No, don't you worry", he replied, "but if you won't let me go any time soon I might suffocate", he laughed and Kagome released him instantly.
Certain that Shippou and Sango were alright, Kagome looked up again to see what had caused the group to stop.
"We should make our camp here", said Miroku and inspected the small clearing in front of them which was framed by several high trees and a giant root of a tree which had once stood there before a storm or something similar had ripped it out of the ground. It would give them some shelter against the cold wind during the night. She could see how Inuyasha lifted his nose and it looked like as if he was sniffing something. But his facial expression kept relaxed as much as it was possible anyway – with every day that passed in which they didn't make any progress Inuyasha grew more restless and therefore his mood got worse.
"Alright boys!" Kagome put her bicycle carefully aside before she clapped her hands confidently. "Let's start a fire."
