Another quick author's note... sorry if my story doesn't match the show precisely. Been relying on wiki for details about how to write this, and the last episode in english hasn't come out, because I was too impatient to write my saucy story. So, thanks again for reading and bearing with me! Chapter 2. An Important Conversation Kaede had insisted that Kagome spend at least her first night back in Kaede and Rin's house. Kaede did not think it entirely appropriate to let Kagome spend the night alone with Inuyasha, as propriety deemed. Kaede let Inuyasha stay as well to watch over Kagome, of course, but he must have missed Kagome during her absence deeply, because during the night he inched closer and closer to her until he was deep asleep, lying beside her. Usually, Inuyasha would never have let his guard down so much, but to again be in Kagome's presence, finally, was another matter. In the time Kagome had been gone, the village saw that Inuyasha had his own modest home at the community's outskirts, but he rarely spent time there. Even so, both were secretly relieved they wouldn't be thrown into solitude Kagome's first evening returned. In fact, they barely had a moment alone since Kagome's return. The first day back had been one of talking, laughing and sharing. “Kagome! You're up!” Rin shouted excitedly as she and Kaede entered. Inuyasha jumped up abruptly, facing the wall to hide his own embarrassment. “Kagome, Kaede and I were out picking tasty berries for breakfast. We thought you'd like them since you've been gone so long!” “Thats so sweet of you, Rin. Thank you Kaede,” Kagome sighed happily, “I'm so happy to be back! We may have instant noodles in the future, but nothing beats the fresh fruit around here. I've missed it so much.” “Let us go see if Sango and Miroku would like some as well, since we picked so many,” said Kaede. “They could always use more food, what with their growing brood.” Inuyasha walked ahead toward Sango and Miroku's, while the three females walked at a more leisurely pace. Rin laughed, “Having three babies would be fun! With a big enough family, you're never lonely.” Kaede looked at her sternly. “Fun and joyous indeed, but not without hard work and responsibility. And the labor of having the children themselves is not to be taken lightly, Rin. Sango is very strong indeed. We were lucky all of Sango's births went well.” She then looked pointedly at Kagome. “Sango and Miroku have done much growing up for their family. They were ready to mature, though. Please just take heed, Kagome. Be ready for whatever choices you may make.” Kagome blinked, and smiled politely. She'd already done this with her own mother and didn't feel like going through it again. “Umm, okay! But sometimes your advice can be a little vague, Kaede. I'll do my best though.” The elder woman sighed. Sango and Miroku were already chasing their little ones around with rice, in and out of the house, trying to get them to eat when they saw Kagome's waving form. All the energetic, laughing kids reminded Kagome of Shippo, and she sighed heavily, wishing he would have stuck around at least one more day before heading back out for training. Lucky Kohaku was able to find him and bring him to see Kagome at all. Another small marker of the passage of time, Kagome noted. Tiny, naïve Shippo was growing up, seeking to become the most skilled, quick-witted fox demon he could be. He would be back soon, she reminded herself. While Miroku and Inuyasha were preoccupied with the din of children throwing, sometimes eating fruit, Sango and Kagome subtly let themselves outside. “So, Kagome, have you and Inuyasha talked about the two of you, yet?” Kagome blushed. She still wasn't exactly sure what to say to anyone confronting her directly about Inuyasha. “I'm not even sure what to do. I mean, not since I've been back yesterday. But it's not like we're not together! Er, or officially for that matter, I guess. What about the two of us?” “Well, everyone has always known that. I was just wondering if you're promised to-” “To what? Get married? Hahaha!” Kagome couldn't suppress the awkward laugh. Sango raised her eyebrows. “Well, I didn't think it was so silly. Inuyasha loves you, and has lots of conviction. I don't remember if I ever told you, but before we faced Naraku the final time, Miroku asked to marry me if we survived. I thought that perhaps while you were alone with Inuyasha, he'd had similar thoughts.” “Sango-” Inuyasha was suddenly behind of them. Both women turned pink and looked at him, then quickly down. Sango had plenty to say to Inuyasha about his roundabout relationship with Kagome, but she knew that he would always do right by her, as Miroku had done with herself. Inuyasha looked at them with a raised brow. “Can we go for a walk, Kagome?” She returned his stare. With a “Mm-hm,” she took his out-held hand. Sango gave a knowing smile to Miroku back inside, and he winked in return. The sky was so blue, it looked like a freshly restored ink print. Tufts of cloud hung still in the air, for hardly a breeze dared to disturb the perfect moment. The grass was reflecting points of light that made the greenery almost sparkle. Singing birds, distant and nearby, sounded their calls to mates. Occasionally, a flower would grace the land, and the pop of color would tantalize the eyes. Kagome had almost forgotten the natural beauty of this time when things were peaceful. One could never forget seeing such strange, frightful, or even disgusting things as Kagome had seen during their battles with Naraku and various others, but for all its unique disturbances, the feudal era's beauty during calm was something to behold. Before she knew it, they were at the nearby riverbank, overlooking the lazily rolling currents. Kagome looked over at Inuyasha. Three years was a long time, and both of them had changed. Without even mentioning the mental maturing each had done, they certainly both looked more grown up. Inuyasha had grown three inches it seemed, maybe more. Under his fire-rat robe, Kagome could only guess at how much more muscular he could be. His face had a harder lined jaw, but his eyes were still that same beautiful gold, currently set in one of his gentle expressions reserved only for Kagome. She herself was always a beautiful girl, and was now becoming a beautiful young woman. Wearing a green v-neck shirt and short, fluttery blue skirt, Inuyasha could see the sensuous curves Kagome developed over time. Kagome's legs were as long as ever, and her skin as radiant. Her face had lost some of its softness too, but the purity and innocence remained in her eyes. Kagome blushed when she thought Inuyasha caught her looking him over, and was glad she could take in the scene, because Inuyasha hadn't said anything. Was Sango right to be concerned? She decided she ought to say something. “Kagome,” Inuyasha said, “I wanted to thank you... for coming back to me. I don't know if the well will ever open again, and I'm so sorry you gave up everything in your other world. I know you wouldn't have come if you didn’t want to, but-” He was staring out at the moving water, standing rigidly. She could see he genuinely felt bad about this. Kagome reached out to his shoulder, and gently turned his position to face her. “Inuyasha...” She blushed, then gathered her resolve. “Don't you know by now?” “You didn't let me finish.” Inuyasha gave her a small smile. He slowly brought his hand to Kagome's back, and with the other, ran the back of his fingers gently across her cheek. “I am sorry. But I'm gonna make it up to you,” His hand trailed from her cheek, down to the back of Kagome's neck, fingertips touching in between her shoulders. He could sense her pulse quicken beneath the surface of her snowy skin, and never broke the link between his golden eyes and her chocolate ones. Inuyasha breathed in deeply, for her racing blood seemed to throw even more of her lovely scent off. His hand on her back was respectful, yet instinctively drew her in ever so much closer. Inuyasha felt his own heart beating loudly in his head. He had no idea if he was saying the right things, but he knew it was time to say something. “Inuyasha.....” Kagome managed, the rest of her words lost in her stunned mind. Inuyasha's voice was hushed and strained, as he struggled to get out his own words. “Kagome, remember inside the jewel? You and I are meant to be together, and I think you know that.... that I love you, Kagome. I'll always keep you safe, and make sure you never regret staying here. I want to be with you, and spend my life with you.” Kagome's heart felt like it would knock him down, its beat was so fierce. Slowly, she reached up and pulled his face to hers. Inuyasha gently parted his lips, and Kagome barely tasted his bottom lip with her tongue. His own tongue grazed her's in return, before they drew even closer. Kagome gave a small sigh of pleasure when Inuyasha pushed his tongue a little further, only to pull back. Apparently, he was a tease. Each restrained three years worth of wanting in that kiss, fueling the fire in hopes of releasing it. Both of their faces were flushed when they pulled away what seemed like a century later. Inuyasha smiled at her and said, “Do you wanna sit for a while?” Kagome nodded with a smile, “I'm feeling a little light headed.” He pulled her close on the grass while she rested her head on his shoulder, and he held her hand. “Inuyasha?” “Yeah?” “Do you remember when we met?” “Of course I do. You think I'd forget?” “No, but while I was gone, it made me think about what my life was like without you in it. And most of the time, I was truly unhappy. It just made me think that I was meant to come back to you.” Inuyasha smiled. “You really think that's why the well reopened?” “Maybe I wanted it so badly, I willed it to happen. Maybe some things are just destiny.” He paused. “Like when we met, huh?” Kagome nodded. “I mean, isn't it strange, after everything and, Kikyo? It's like no matter what...” Our souls are intertwined, she finished the thought to herself. “No matter what, Kagome?” Inuyasha insisted. She was embarrassed to say something that deep to him, even after he had opened up to her. “I was just gonna say, we'll always find each other. No matter what.” Now it was Inuyasha's turn to think. Even after their separation, he still knew her well enough to know something was up. The difference now was that he wasn't going to push her about it that hard. “Kagome, all I want is for you to know that you're all I think about. And even when I pray to Kikyo, I know all she would want is our happiness.” Kagome looked at him with wide eyes. “Inuyasha, you've become so... I don't know. Grown up, somehow? Is that possible? You're not even supposed to age that fast.” “You know, you don't have to act so damn surprised that I can tell you how I feel and all that crap.” I guess not too mature, Kagome thought to herself. She sighed and nestled back into the crook of his neck. It would be too weird if things were that different. Inuyasha snapped up suddenly, “Before I forget, I have this for you.” He fished around in his robe, and pulled out a small wrapped up leaf. “Here.” Kagome unwrapped the tiny package, and in the center sat a ring. The ring was the most magnificent yet simplistic thing Kagome ever saw. It was a band of what almost looked like pure glass, or smooth diamond, thickened at the top in a dew-drop like shape. Although it looked like glass, most of the ring appeared to be as delicate and thin as a spider web. Upon close inspection, the ring seemed to catch every color imaginable, and for split seconds, some colors that were inconceivable. She held it up carefully to the light. “Inuyasha! It's... incredible! But where would you ever get something like this?” He blushed, unaware that he could be quite the gift giver when he put his mind to it. “Well, about a year after you left, I decided that if you ever came back, I would...” He reddened and swallowed. “...make sure we spend our lives together, and I remember you telling Sango once that in your time, women get fancy rings made of gems and metal when guys wanna court them. So I didn't wanna disappoint you after you'd been around all that for so long.” “I can guarantee you, nothing from the future can compete with this. You've been holding it for all this time?” She smiled and twirled it in the light again. Inuyasha smiled in relief. “Yeah, I mean, you could have come back at any time. So, I went to Hosenki's son, the apprentice jewel maker, and asked him if he had anything that would make a good ring for a priestess- and a special woman. He showed me this material he created by mistake that purifies the wearer. You're already so pure, he figured it would amplify your spiritual energy, and you might even be able to concentrate it using the ring. He's calling it Absoludite, for its pure quality. Hosenki junior only made it for me because he knows how powerful you are already. Even though it looks delicate and beautiful, it's strengthened by spirit, like you. Its nice enough, and its useful.” He took it from Kagome and asked her where it goes. Kagome coyly held out her left hand, ring finger raised. Inuyasha slipped on the ring, which glowed brightly and then sent a wave of light through Kagome's body. She felt breathless. In his own way, Inuyasha proved to be quite the romantic. She was impressed with his suaveness so far. “You okay?” asked Inuyasha. “Yeah, I am. Really great,” She grinned. Talk about putting a ring on it. Kagome then reached up to pull him in for another kiss. When the sun was setting, they returned to the village, hand in hand. Sango and Miroku met them outside. “Well, well,” Miroku said teasingly, “You two were gone an awfully long time. And so friendly looking, too!” Sango whacked him on the back of the head. “What he means is,” she said, “did you have a good talk?” Inuyasha turned red, and looked off to the side, clearing his throat multiple times. Kagome looked at him pointedly with a ridiculous smile. “Well?” “Well what?” “Aren't you gonna tell them?” He blinked and blushed even harder. “Well... uhmm.. yeah! Of course. Just let me ah- So...” Kagome threw her hands on her hips and narrowed her eyes, but she still couldn't stop smiling. She turned back to Sango. “Inuyasha and I are... wow, I guess it is kinda hard to say. But here goes nothing- we're getting married!” “Oh, Kagome! Congratulations!” Sango threw her arms around Kagome. “Well done, Inuyasha,” Miroku clapped a hand on Inuyasha's back. “One of the finest wives any man could hope to have!” Inuyasha glared at him, and gave him another whack on the head. “It was meant as a compliment!” Miroku insisted. “Just keep your own wife feeling fine, how 'bout.” Kagome and Sango were agreeing that a quaint ceremony would be most appropriate. Kagome did not need a blowout wedding. “I want it to be small. Just our group, and a few close friends. Like Shippo, Myoga, Hachi, Koga and Ayamé... and Sesshomaru and Jakken.” Sango assured her she would send out Kilala with some invitations, and she would talk to Kaede about officiating. Demon slaying, becoming a wife, and then a mother gave Sango a myriad of talents, one of which was organization of just about anything. She told Kagome she would handle everything, except that Kagome would have to pick her own bouquet and help alter Sango's wedding kimono to fit Kagome. Even though Inuyasha had seen this dress on Sango at her wedding to Miroku, the ladies would make sure he wouldn't know it.
