Chapter 1:
Kagome stood by the well, staring down into its depths. Her big yellow backpack was resting on her shoulders and her hair fluttered gently. She had long since given up her school uniform. At the age of 18 she was out of high school and had no intention of going to college. She wore a pair of snug jeans and a white t-shirt. She glanced at her clothes and sighed. The pull from the well was strong today and she knew that she couldn’t hold out any longer. She adjusted her backpack and stepped up onto the lip of the well. She hesitated and looked out the doors to the house. It stood empty now. Her family had all gone, moved to the states to be as far away from the well as possible. She remembered the day two weeks ago when she found out. Flashback: Her mother was sitting at the kitchen table with tears running down her face. Kagome was taken back at seeing her mother like that. She walked up to her and wrapped her arms around her shoulders. “What’s wrong, mom?” She looked up and could not bring herself to smile at her daughter. “You are going back again aren’t you?” She sounded so lost and afraid. Kagome took a step back from her mom and her jaw dropped. “Of course I had planned on going back. I have a responsibility there. I can’t just walk away from that.” Kagome’s mom sighed and tears ran heavier down her face. “We are leaving Kagome; Souta, Gramps and me. We can’t keep doing this. We were hoping that you would attend college somewhere far away and forget Inuyasha and that time,” she shook her head, “We just can’t keep doing this Kagome. You can come with us if you want to but if not, I’m going to sign the house over to you and you can do with it what you want.” Kagome fell back as though she had been struck. Tears gathered in her eyes as she watched her mother get up from the table. As she walked out of the room, the tears began to fall. Kagome sat there for several minutes silently grieving. For what she wasn’t sure yet but she knew that her mother had just given her the ultimate choice: stay with her family and leave Inuyasha and her friends behind, or let her family leave her behind and move to the feudal era for good. End Flashback. Kagome shook her head as the tears started to gather. Her gaze turned hard and she forced herself not to start crying. They choose to leave her! They couldn’t bear to support her anymore and she refused to feel regret for not following them. She had been practicing for the last week keeping her face neutral and emotions buried. She thought of Sesshomaru and smirked to herself. No one would have thought for a moment that he was a role model and yet she thought of him every time she practiced. Her family left a week ago after her mother signed the property over to her as promised. Kagome spent the next few days packing her things into boxes. She clearly marked all the boxes so that it would make it easier to access in a rush. Then she took a day to move all the boxes out to the well house so she could come back, grab what she needed and head right back again, except for when she needed to go to the store for supplies. Kagome shook her head and looked out to the Goshinboku, and then further out to the steps leading to the street. She was really going to miss this place. She had decided to sell most of the shrine. The only part she was keeping in her name was the property directly surrounding the well house and the Goshinboku. In the contract for the property there were a few conditions: (1) No one was allowed near or in the well house, (2) She was allowed to come and go as she pleased, as she had to go through the property to reach the well house, and (3) if she were to ever want to buy the property back in full the residents were required to sell out to her for the same price as they bought it for. She didn’t think that she would ever want to, but she had to have a fallback plan if she wanted to return to this era. Kagome staggered on the lip of the well, almost falling in. She quickly regained her balance and looked out the doors one more time, the well wasn’t giving her any more time. She was needed in the past. Kagome let one tear fall for her family before stealing herself for the journey ahead. Kagome jumped and was embraced by the calmness of the slipstream of time. The weightless feeling of traveling through time itself was a comfort like nothing else could have been. She felt her feet touch down on the bottom of the well and the comforting arms of time released her. Kagome reached for the vines without looking up and started climbing. At the top of the well she took a moment to look around. No one was there but she knew they were on their way. She could feel the demonic energy from Inuyasha and the Tetsusaiga coming toward her. Kagome sat on the rim of the well and turned her head up to the sky to wait. The wind picked up a bit and she noticed a shift of demonic energy at the very edge of her senses. Kagome began to scan the edge of the tree line for the source of the energy. Inuyasha was getting closer so she didn’t have a lot of time to find the source. She flared her power in the direction of the demonic energy and got a surge back in return. Kagome frowned as she felt the demon move away from the area. Inuyasha came to the edge of the trees and stopped. Kagome looked toward him and nodded slightly. She stood and started toward him. When Kagome was a few feet away he turned and started back to town. ~~~ Sesshomaru watched the miko as she left the clearing with Inuyasha. Her aura has been growing significantly over the last year, her powers increasing steadily. While he knew what it meant, he had hoped she was not the one. His time would be coming soon to make his presence known to her. With a quick turn he began walking toward the West. ~~~ Kagome followed behind Inuyasha silently. Neither spoke, but their silence was less than comfortable. The last time Kagome was in this time she did not leave in the best of circumstances. Inuyasha had finally admitted to himself, and to the group, that he was in love with Kikyo and would always belong to her. Of course, Kagome had already known this and had comes to terms with it several years earlier. Sango and Miroku were less than pleased and made their opinions known quite loudly. They then spent the next two days only speaking with Kagome. Things began to settle back into a normal routine for the next day or two. Inuyasha then stopped talking to or even interacting with Kagome. He would not even take a bowl of ramen from her. His food had to be passed to another before he would touch it. This Kagome did not expect. She had thought that they would remain friends even if his heart belonged to her. Kagome was hurt beyond words but respected him just enough to not press the issue and generally keep her distance. Kagome glared at Inuyasha’s back as the continued toward the village. Her despair and hurt dissolved into indifference a week after his announcement when he did the one thing she could not forgive lightly. It was an unpleasant day and Kagome was tired. While walking late in the afternoon she tripped over a rock on the path. She stumbled forward into Inuyasha before catching her balance. She immediately tried to apologize when he turned and backhanded her. Kagome fell backward into Sango who caught her as she fell. Kagome raised a hand to her face and winced. Inuyasha stared down at her with indifference before turning and continued down the path. Sango had tried to defend her but Kagome stopped her. This was her battle and she would fight it in her own way. Kagome left shortly after that for her own time to get some breathing room. She dragged her feet about coming back for more than a week when she found out about her family moving away. Then she went back just long enough to leave a note for one of the group to find, informing them that she would be away longer than she thought. She knew Inuyasha would not come after her and no one else in the group had the ability to travel through the well. Kagome sighed in relief has the village came into view. Every villager they came across smiled or waved at Kagome. A few called her by name as they passed close enough. Kagome smiled and waved back at them all as they moved to Kaede’s hut. Sango was sitting outside the hut polishing her Hiraikotsu in the last of the afternoon sun. She smiled and quickly got up to greet them as they neared the hut, tapping once on the wall to alert whoever was inside. “Kagome! I’m so glad you are back. I had no idea you would be gone so long. What happened?” Sango hugged her close for a moment before releasing her. Kagome smiled warmly at her. “I’ll tell you all about it as soon as I’ve seen everyone. Where are…” Just then Miroku stuck his head out the door to the hut and smiled. “Is that Kagome-sama I hear? Ah, I see it is.” Kagome smiled and nodded in reply. A second latter Shippo came bounding out of the hut and launched himself into her arms. “Oka-san! I have missed you so much. You were gone a very long time.” Shippo snuggled closer to her and relaxed. Kagome smiled and looked toward the hut as the flap began to move. Her smile died instantly as Kikyo stepped from the building. She glanced to the setting sun before looking at her. Kagome handed Shippo to Sango for a moment before facing her. “Kikyo,” she greeted coldly. Kikyo smiled and turned from her to walk to Inuyasha who immediately put his arm around her. Kikyo glanced back and smirked at Kagome. She shrugged and turned back to her friends. Sango was glaring openly at the couple as Kagome gently extracted Shippo from her arms. “Come on, I wish for some privacy if I’m going to tell you about my trip.” Kagome walked away from the hut and Inuyasha until she was positive she was out of hearing range. Kagome shrugged her bag off her shoulders and set it next to a tree before settling herself next to it. Sango and Miroku sat with her and waited for her to begin her story. “Two weeks ago I left a note at the well informing you that I would be gone much longer than expected, but did not include a reason why.” Kagome took a deep breath and hugged Shippo closer to her body. “My family decided that it would be better if we did not live next to the well anymore. They thought that a change of location would prevent me from coming back to the past.” Sango and Miroku looked worried but did not interrupt. “My mother then gave me two choices: Either go with them to America or stay with the shrine but be alone. I told them that I would not leave. My place is here, in this time, and I refuse to give that up. So last week my family packed up all of their belongings and left. The shrine and grounds were left to me to do what I wanted with.” Sango reached out to lay her hand on Kagome’s knee for support. Kagome smiled weakly at her before continuing. “I sold the shrine and most of the grounds. The only part of the shrine that remains in my name is the well and the Goshinboku. So now I have no obligations to the future and no family there either.” Kagome gently ran her hands through Shippo’s tail. “So it looks like you are my only family now. I can still travel through the well so if there are any supplies that we need or anything personal that I need to get I can still make a trip to get it but I don’t see the point of making frequent trips to a place that I am no longer wanted.” No tears fell from Kagome’s eyes as she stared into the setting sun. She had come to terms with this and refused to give into the urge to cry one last time for the family she would probably never see again. Sango and Miroku glanced at each other and nodded. They quietly got up and went back to the village. Kagome sat running her hands through Shippo’s tail, at peace for a little while. Kagome let her mind wonder to things that she would have to deal with soon if she was going to fulfill her destiny. Kikyo had come too soon. She was not ready to take on that enemy yet. Naraku was no longer a threat as he had been destroyed several months ago, but the Jewel was a constant worry to her. She felt it calling for her. Midoriko and Magatsuhi both pulling on her soul in different directions, urging her to find the pieces and make a wish on the completed jewel. Too quickly the sun set and darkness began spreading its arms across the land. Kagome shivered. Shippo looked up at her with quizzical eyes. “I do not like the night, my son. The darkness that descends over the land tends to reach me even in the brightest of surroundings. I cannot run; I cannot hide from it. And with the darkness comes… grief. I do not like the night Shippo. I have come to fear it like nothing else I have ever come in contact with.” Shippo hugged her close. “I won’t let anything happen to you oka-san. I promise.” Kagome smiled gently and felt the night settle around her like a blanket, suffocating and with no end in sight. >>>A lot of Background for the story but some interesting developments and comments for later. At this point I’m just building up the characters and history to explain latter scenarios and events.
