The dark veil of night lifted and revealed a pallid sunrise.
The pale, citrine yellow pillars of light glowed dimly behind the closed eyelids of the great dog demon. Sesshoumaru grunted when with light the pain gradually infiltrated his consciousness. He opened his eyes with a scowl on his face. A bitter tang of metal clung to his tongue.
"Water…" He croaked. "Jaken, bring me water."
The shoji of his room glided carefully open. But the one entering was not Jaken.
Kagome kneeled in front of the shoji as she closed it behind her. The subtle shuffle of her yukata and the soft steps of her feet moved closer.
Sesshoumaru couldn't remember much from last night and he had no honest recollection why his brother's human wench was in his castle. But he did not welcome this intruder's presence.
"Where's Jaken?" He demanded.
Kagome sat next to Sesshoumaru's futon, holding a bowl of water and a piece of cloth.
"He's with Rin." Kagome replied reassuringly while she dipped the cloth in to the bowl. She raised the damp rag to Sesshoumaru's lips. Sesshoumaru retreated.
"What are you doing, human?"
Kagome placed the cloth back into the bowl. "You said you wanted water."
Sesshoumaru studied the bowl, which Kagome had placed on the tatami, and realized that she had intented to hand-ply him. The mere notion made him revolted.
"I wish none of your assistance, giri no imouto. Hand this Sesshoumaru the water."
The young woman shook her head. "I strongly advice against it. Your intestines were just gutted. You should take it slowly, onii-sama." Kagome knew how much he hated the affectionate form she used of brother-in-law. But he was being pig-headed and she couldn't resist the urge to annoy him.
Sesshoumaru sighed angrily and reached for the bowl. Kagome didn't try to stop him when he greedily drank the liquid. With a wince he dropped the bowl. It didn't take long before he retched.
"I'll go get clouts. And some water." Kagome sighed and left Sesshoumaru in a pool of water, bile and blood that had scattered over the futon, tatami and the defiled Sesshoumaru.
As days passed, Kagome tended less and less Sesshoumaru who had gathered enough of his strength to get up and eat on his own.
The proud demon made no effort to hide his distaste of the fact that a mere mortal had, perhaps, saved his life and now was changing his chamber-pots and cleaning his wounds. As if he was somehow dependant on her aid.
Unlike other humans, he always welcomed Rin to his home and was genuinely glad that she was unharmed by what had happened in the forest. He was also happy that she was no longer worried about him. As much as he hated admitting it to himself, and would die before admitting it to anyone else, her happiness was the most precious thing in his life.
Sesshoumaru stood in front of the only window of his chamber. It gave out to a garden where Rin had spent countless hours playing, dancing in the rain and chasing Jaken. A small reminiscent smile tugged the corners of his mouth. A display of emotion he guarded from everyone. Except Rin.
He heard the shoji glide open. Without turning, he knew that other human had entered the room. He knew as soon as he had heard her soft steps from the hallway. Her way of walking was not like Rin's. Rin was always in a hurry. Running like the child she still was for brief fleeting moments in the verge of womanhood.
There was something peculiar in the scent of that older human wench today. Something that suddenly made his heart ache and he couldn't remember why. Sesshoumaru turned to look at her.
Kagome was holding a vase of flowers in her arms. White spring flowers that grew in a nearby place that Sesshoumaru had long since stopped visiting.
His eyes widened and the ache in his chest grew intolerable. In one swift leap he grabbed Kagome by her wrist and whisked the vase from her arms. It came to a smashing halt against the wall.
How dare she, he thought. As if she knew the insult and hurt that were hidden in those white petals.
Kagome was startled and timidly looked at Sesshoumaru whose eyes were filled with disgust and hate.
"How dare you…" He hissed like an angried snake. "How dare you bring those weeds to my house!"
As he gripped the hand of the surprized woman, he smelled something else. It was faint, barely there, but he could still smell it. A scent that was Kagome and still something slightly different. A new life. The smell of blood that was half Kagome's, half Inuyasha's.
He flicked her hand away and stepped away from her. The storm in his eyes subdued and was replaced by icy indifference.
"You have overstayed your welcome. This is not your house. You may not do as you please here."
The baffled human woman tried to say something, maybe apologize, ask what she had done wrong, Sesshoumaru didn't care.
"Leave."
Kagome just blindly stared at him, trying to get a grasp on the reason behind his sudden outburst. But Sesshoumaru's face offered no explanation.
While they were silently staring at each other, Rin entered the room. The carefree smile on her face dissipated as she sensed the hostile air around the two grown-ups.
Sesshoumaru turned his back at both of them.
"And take Rin with you."
Rin blinked. "What?"
"You are leaving. The both of you."
"Sesshoumaru-samaaaa…" Rin's lower lip began to quiver. It was usually enough to persuade Sesshoumaru to change his mind, gave in to Rin's will, but not this time. Sesshoumaru hardened his heart against the salty fragrance of Rin's tears.
"This is not a place for a human. Or a young woman, for that matter."
His tone of voice left no room for argument.
"But…" Rin still tried, but Kagome gently lowered her hands on her shoulders.
"Come on, Rin-chan." She softly murmured and guided Rin out of the room. Kagome did not understand the offence she and Rin were punished for. But the fact remained that that pig-headed salt statue was the lord in this house. He was well enough to take care of himself and Kagome was not needed. And quite frankly, she was not that fond of him either. He could sulk in his castle alone if he wished to, she didn't care and even if she did, there was nothing she could do about it.
The shoji rustled close.
Sesshoumaru sighed heavily and closed his eyes.
Sesshoumaru had decided long ago that he would not fall victim to any woman. Their mere purpose was to bring misfortune and suffering to any fool stupid enough to love them. Especially those human women. They blossomed like spring flowers and just as quickly withered and died. As if they had never been.
Inuyasha was a dolt, even more so than Sesshoumaru had ever given him credit for. What good would a human mate be? Inuyasha would out-age his wife, their half-bred children and probably the children of his own children. There would come a day Inuyasha would bury his family, one heartbreak after another. And live his long and miserable life without them. But not long enough to forget them.
"Idiot." Sesshoumaru grumbled and winced when his wounds ached.
Kagome and Rin were walking silently, side by side through the forest back to Kaede's village. Kagome had her bow and arrows ready for those men.
When they had brought Sesshoumaru back to his castle and Rin was assured that his life was not in any immediate danger anymore, Rin had explained Kagome how she had known their attackers.
It had all something to do with centuries old clan wars and land disputes. The attackers were of competing clan of demons who felt that the Western lands belonged to them. Sesshoumaru had fought them for years. Even back when he was still travelling with Rin.
On the night of his wounding, Sesshoumaru had defended them against dozens of demons that had waited to attack him off-guard. Since no-one caught Sesshoumaru off-guard on his own turf, he had managed to send them back limping and crying, but not without his own damages.
Rin didn't know much about the disputes or about the opposing clan. Sesshoumaru had always tried to spare her from worrying things.
Kagome mused all these things and hoped that they would reach Kaede's village before nightfall.
As Kagome and Rin reached the village unharmed, Kagome could not have known how close the danger had hovered around them.
Beady black eyes carefully observed from the shadows how Kagome and Rin entered the little hut that Kagome and Inuyasha shared.
"…with the little one. They returned to the human village just now." A piping voice recounted.
"That Inu-no-taisho had a fancy to humans. Seems like his son has the same inclination." A deeper voice remarked and laughed dryly.
The voices belonged to a pair of rat demons who had been shadowing Sesshoumaru for days. The one they were telling all of this was sitting in a throne of bones, their master, Nezuooki.
The great rat king.
The rat king carefully listened to his minions while sucking marrow from the bones of his prey.
"I see. What suggest you?" He languidly asked.
The rat with the deeper voice, who seemed to be more intelligent of the two, said: "Sesshoumaru is too strong an enemy to be fought man to man. We suggest, oh Greatness, that you take the woman. Lure Sesshoumaru to us. We will be better equipped to face him in our territory."
What, of course, they had lacked to be aware of was that Kagome was not Sesshoumaru's lover. That they would have known had they observed her for longer. Now they merely assumed that since she was the only female visitor Sesshoumaru had ever had, she must have been his woman. Taking care of him and staying with him for days.
Similar suggestion had been made before. That they should abduct the little one, Rin, but brutes as they may be, even the rat king found it distasteful to use children as weapons of war. Inu-no-Taisho might have been an asshole and wrongfully robbed their clan of their rightful plains, but he had never shed blood of the innocent.
Nezuooki was vain and pride. He did not wish to lose the battle of nobility and honour to a filthy dog. So he would never use a child as a bait as long as his opponent did not.
But a fight-skilled woman. That had the sound of a delicious plan.
A/N: You'll get why Sesshy is so upset about the flowers if you read the semi-prequel to this story. "Tale of the Unfortunate Prince".
