InuYasha opened the door and let Miroku step inside, behind him was Sango, her arm around another woman who had her head bowed, her wavy back hair hiding her face. He frowned as he noticed the way her hands trembled and the way the bones on her wrists were sticking out. He moved further away from the door and Sango coaxed the woman inside.
“Kagome-chan, this is Inoue InuYasha,” Sango said gently. “He’s been a really good friend of mine and Miroku’s since middle school.”
InuYasha’s breath caught in his throat as she lifted her head and looked him in the eyes before quickly looking away. She was absolutely fucking beautiful but those stormy eyes had shown the true depth of her despair. She was definitely standing on the edge of a precipice. No one could fake a look like hers.
“As you can see he is unmistakably part youkai,” Miroku told her. “He’s also very good at protecting people. Not only is it in his nature but he used to work for the Youkai no Taishou as the head of his personal guard.”
“Don’t fucking sugar coat it,” InuYasha snapped. “Tell her what I really did for the Youkai no Taishou. Why you really called me. She deserves to know exactly who she is going to be living with.”
She looked at him again then. “You tell me.”
“I handled all the wet work,” he said. “I killed for the Youkai no Taishou, mostly rogue youkai, but not always. Sometimes I took care of humans that needed killing but that were either too well connected or too smart to fall prey to human justice. I had special dispensation and a long leash because of how good I was at the job.”
“I’ll pay you. Everything I have,” she said and she threw herself at his feet and pressed her forehead to the floor. “It’s not much but I’ll find a way to make more. Whatever you ask. Please. Please, I can’t live like this anymore.”
Her sobs tore at the heart he was certain had been ripped from his chest and ground into dust. He bent down to take her shoulders and ignored Sango as she tried to tell him not to touch her. He lifted her from the ground and wiped away her tears.
“I can’t,” he told her gently. “I would, believe me and I’d do it for free after seeing you and hearing what he’s done. He definitely needs killing, but I lost my dispensation. My brother would know it was me and he’d come after me himself. You can stay here for as long as you need and I will protect you, but I can’t go after the bastard for you.”
Her lower lip trembled, but she nodded and lowered her head. “I’m sorry. Please forgive me for falling apart like that. I just…”
“Keh, don’t worry about it,” he told her. “Anyone with eyes can see you’ve been through hell, but know this, no one, I don’t care who the fuck he is, how smart, or rich or powerful, no one will hurt you while you're with me. If he somehow does find you here, then I’ll kill him before he can lay so much as finger on you. That’s not just a promise.” He clenched his jaw and sliced open his palm. “All my blood before a drop of yours I swear it on my youki.”
Kagome’s eyes widened as she felt the pulse of his youki and of the magic in his words. This man who didn’t know a thing about her had just made a binding blood oath to die before letting harm to come to her. She didn’t know why he would do such a thing for her but for the first time in months she felt something besides fear and sadness. She finally remembered what it felt like to have hope.
“Oi, Sango, quit standing there like an idiot and show her her room,” InuYasha barked. “I made up the one next to mine, but if she isn’t comfortable being that close then just let her pick whichever one she wants.”
Sango led Kagome down the hall and once they were gone from sight Miroku approached his hanyou friend. “What was that all about, might I ask?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” InuYasha said with a snort.
“I do not recall asking for your oath,” Miroku said. “Nor have I seen you show so much as a hint of the tenderness you offered Kagome since before Ki-”
“Do not say her name, bouzo,” InuYasha said cutting him off.
Miroku gave a small apologetic bow. “Forgive me, but that still does not explain why you would make a blood oath to protect her.”
“Fuck, your eyes work, don’t they?” InuYasha asked. “She was one good push away from killing herself or just giving up and letting that psycho have her. What else could I do?”
“At least I assume this means you are convinced that this was not all some set up,” Miroku said.
“Keh, you can’t fake despair like hers,” InuYasha admitted. “Shit, I want everything you have on this asshole. I still have some contacts. Once I have the whole picture I can help find the right person to take this piece of shit out.”
Miroku nodded and it wasn’t more than a minute later that Sango returned alone.
“She’s in the room next to yours and already sound asleep,” Sango said. “I haven’t seen her fall asleep like that since all this started. Thank you doing this InuYasha.”
“Come my darling Sango,” Miroku said. “I’ll mail a copy of everything to Sesshomaru and make sure he forwards a copy to you so that there is another layer of distance between us and you, just in case.”
Miroku opened the door to let Sango in the car and then walked around and got in the driver’s seat. He turned on the engine and turned off the radio before turning the car around and heading back down the long and winding dirt road.
“What do you make of that?” Sango asked.
“I think my darling Sango that it is a shame that InuYasha went into training instead of college, because I strongly suspect that it would have been Kikyou that ended up being dumped,” Miroku replied.
“She let him touch her,” Sango said. “She won’t even let you touch her however innocently and when I suggested a room a bit further from his she wouldn’t even consider it.”
“Obviously as we hoped, InuYasha has given her some sense of safety,” Miroku offered. “Granted it happened more quickly than I anticipated.”
“You should have seen her,” Sango told him with tears in her eyes. “She laid down and just went to sleep without checking the windows or getting a knife to keep under her pillow, and just before it was almost like I could see the old Kagome starting to come back. At first I thought he was crazy making an oath like that out of nowhere.”
“I did as well,” Miroku admitted. “But perhaps he knew better than us what she needed. She no doubt felt the magic in his words and it has to be a relief to be faced with a man who is so transparent and brutally honest..”
“Miroku, you don’t think that there is any chance that we might have actually been matchmaking without meaning to, do you, that we might actually get both our friends back when this is all over?” Sango questioned hopefully.
Miroku grinned. “I think that there is a very good chance actually, my beloved. In truth, I’ve wanted to put those two together for quite a while, but he wasn’t ready and then that cretin came along and started his attempt to destroy or possess her.”
“We have to get him,” Sango said.
“And we will,” Miroku assured her. “And if not us, InuYasha most certainly will find a way.”

Kagome rubbed her eyes as she sat up in bed. She almost panicked before she remembered where she was. She noticed the sunlight shining behind the curtain and realized that for the first time in months she had slept through the night. She got up and headed for the bathroom. The fact that it was a jack and jill should have scared her or made her uncomfortable but instead she took comfort in knowing that InuYasha was so near and could get to her so easily if he had to.
She used the bathroom and as she washed her hands she noted that there was a brand new toothbrush on the counter as well as a tube of toothpaste and a hairbrush. She smiled at the thoughtfulness of the man who had sworn himself to protect her. Miroku and Sango must have told him that they couldn’t risk going back to her place to get any of her things.
She washed her face and brushed her teeth and hair before turning off the light and leaving the bathroom. She wondered what she was going to do about clothes. Sango had given her a few things, but it wouldn’t be enough if she had to stay here for any length of time. She hated being such a burden to everyone. She vowed to find ways to make herself useful while she was here.
She opened the bedroom door and was greeted by the scent of something cooking. It made her mouth water instead of making her feel sick and her stomach rumbled its agreement. She stepped out into the main room and InuYasha looked to her with a nod.
“It’s just about ready,” he said. “Sit.”
“Are you sure?” she asked. “Can I help?”
He snorted. “You look like a strong wind would blow you away. Sit and eat.”
She knew he was right. She looked terrible and had gone past skinny and into sickly. He put a plate in front of her and she was surprised to see that he had made omelettes. “Thank you.”
He grunted and sat across from her. “So how’d you sleep. You looked like shit last night, but you look a little better today.”
Kagome never thought she would smile at being told she looked a little better than shit, but she couldn’t help it. She needed someone who would be brutally honest with her. She didn’t want to hear anymore platitudes or well intentioned white lies. “I feel better. I haven’t slept through the night in months. Inoue-san-”
“InuYasha,” he cut in. “Just InuYasha.”
“InuYasha,” she tried again. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this and if there is anything you want me to do around here please don’t hesitate to ask. I don’t want to be a burden and I’d like to make myself useful.”
“First thing you can do is stop thanking me,” he told her. “I get it. The truth is you might not be so thankful after a few days living with me. Second you can make a list of anything you might need from the grocery store and foods that you like. I only make the trip once a month, so I’m betting you're going to at least need some tampons of whatever. Be specific.”
Kagome blushed a little. He was right she was definitely going to need those if he only went to the store once a month. She didn’t harbor any illusions that it wasn’t going to take some time to secure her safety so that she could go home. She supposed she would just have to get used to the minor embarrassments that were surely to come with living with a man she barely knew.
“Okay,” she replied.
“Listen this is going to take some getting used to for both of us,” he said. “Just treat my house like it was yours. I don’t expect you to be a maid or anything but if you want to do something, do it, be it cleaning up or whatever. I’d prefer you didn’t go in my bedroom unless I’m in there and you need me for something, but other than that you can go wherever.”
“If I wanted to go outside?” she asked. “I wasn’t really paying attention on the way up here.”
“I don’t have any neighbors,” he told her. “You should be fine taking a walk or whatever but don’t get lost in the woods or I’m going to be pissed when I have to come find you. Dress warmer than you think you need to. It can be cold in the shade even if the day is mild and that way if you do get lost you won’t freeze to death at night.”
“Um, that’s another thing,” she said. “I don’t have much in the way of clothes.”
His brow furrowed. “I’ve got a spare coat, hats and gloves. You can probably wear my shirts and sweaters even if they will be too big. I’ve also got some youkai made yukata stored in the attic. When you make the list write your sizes down. The store usually has boots and jeans. We could order online but I don’t want to do that unless we have to. Better not to make it obvious that I have a woman up here in case the bastard starts investigating people around my brother because as connected as he seems to be he’ll get word when a kill order is given for him and who sent it down.”
Her eyes widened. “Y-You really think he would go that far, try to find me that way?”
“Don’t you?” InuYasha asked.
She swallowed hard. “Yes.”
He noticed that her hands were shaking as she set down her chopsticks. “Shit. I am not trying to scare you, and I will have a better idea once I get all the info from Miroku and my brother, but until then I am going to take every precaution to keep you safe.”
Kagome took a deep breath and willed her hands to still. “I know and I want you to keep telling me the truth even if it is scary. Miroku and Sango have been so wonderful and I really am grateful for their help and their support, but I can’t hide forever and I can’t go back to living like I was before. I have to know what I am really facing here and they’ve tried to protect me from that. I know I kind of fell apart when I got here, but I’m tougher than I might have seemed.”
He tilted his head as she raised her chin and met his gaze. “I was sure last night that you were close to either killing yourself or letting the bastard have what he wants, but I think I was wrong about you Ka-go-me. I guess we’ll find out.”
They finished the rest of their meal in silence and when they were done Kagome insisted on doing the dishes. While she took care of that he went outside and cut some wood. It was going to be cold tonight. He could smell it and he also just liked having a fire going when it was cold enough to warrant it. Once he was satisfied with the number of logs, he stacked them in the rack and then went back inside.
Kagome was sitting at the table working on the list he had asked her for, so he went to the front closet and pulled out a jacket for her and grabbed a knit cap as well as a pair of gloves in case she wanted to go outside while he was gone. He also went upstairs and picked out several of his shirts and set them on the bed in her room before going back down.
“I’ve finished the list,” she said.
He nodded and grabbed his keys before going over to take the small piece of paper. “Come with me before I leave.”
Kagome followed InuYasha back towards his bedroom. She looked around and was surprised by how warm the space was, but it suited him. He opened what she assumed was a closet and bent down. She gasped as he slid open a secret door and punched in a code. A door opened upwards from the floor. She looked down into the darkness.
“It’s way too soon for anyone to have figured out where you are, but better safe than sorry,” he said. “You even think you sense someone, you head for this room. Lock every door behind you. The closet door is reinforced. No human is getting through it or busting that lock. You hear someone break my bedroom door grab the flashlight hanging on the wall and go through here and close the door behind you. The code is 470531. Follow the tunnel and when you come out there is a sat phone in a survival cache. The only number programmed is my brother. Give him the short version and do whatever he tells you.”
“Okay, though I have to say I didn’t picture you as the running type,” she said.
He snorted. “I’m not, but I’m also not the stupid or suicidal type and if I’m making a last stand it’s going to be on my terms. Now what’s the code?”
“470531,” she said.
“Good,” he offered. “I’ll be gone for at least three hours maybe four, but I should be back well before dark. If I’m gone more than twelve take the tunnel.”
“Why wouldn’t you be back?” she questioned.
“Keh, weather, car trouble,” he replied. “You never know, but even in a typhoon running into the wind I can make the run from town to here in less than twelve hours. If I can’t make it in that time frame I’ll call you.”
“You are very thorough,” she told him.
“You don’t live long in my old line of work by not taking into account all the variables and planning ahead,” he said as he shut the trap door and stood back up.
“Well, I’m glad you're on my side,” she said. “All this actually makes me feel like I might have a chance to get my life back one day.”
“You will,” he assured her. “I’ll be back soon. I put some shirts on your bed and the coat and stuff on the sofa is yours to use too. I'll be back before you know it."
Kagome nodded and followed him back out of his room. She locked the door behind him and watched out the window as he got into his small SUV and drove away.
