The phone rang loudly beside her head, and Kagome reached for it blindly, snatching up the receiver. "Hello?"
"We've got a situation," a male voice said.
"What is it, Miroku?"
"A few hours ago we managed to capture a hanyou stalking one of ours," he replied and then sighed softly. "He managed to kill four of us before we were able to subdue him. He's damn strong for a half demon... Strong enough to be part of the Taishou line, and he has the right coloring too."
Kagome gasped. "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure about what I told you, but he is refusing to say anything to anyone," Miroku replied.
"I'll be right down."
Kagome hung up the phone. Ever since she had taken over as leader of her kind, after her mother's death a year ago, they had been trying to capture a youkai important enough to be used to put at least a temporary stop to the killing. If he really was part of the ruling youkai clan, then she would finally be able to put her plan into action, and it would give her the time to find out the truth about the beginning of the war.
She dressed quickly in the white hakama that marked her high rank and a white kosode. She tied her hair back in a white ribbon and grabbed her bow on the way out the door. It wasn't the most practical weapon, but even after all this time no one had been able to find a way to infuse spiritual power into anything but the weapons of old Thankfully the youkai saw using guns as beneath them, or else she doubted there would be any left to oppose them. In fact, she had heard from one of their captures that the Inu no Taisho himself forbid their use and vowed to personally destroy any youkai who was found using one.
It was information like this that made her doubt what she knew in the first place. She had been taught that youkai were dark creatures without honor, and yet this decree spoke of quite the opposite.
She climbed into her car and headed downtown. In large part the general population remained unaware of what was going on, since the youkai only actively hunted those with spiritual powers. Of course, sometimes the damage from the small battles that were waged day and night was great enough that it could not go unnoticed, but since it wasn't affecting them directly no one seemed to care about such a small inconvenience.
Miroku was waiting for her just inside when she arrived at headquarters. "Have we been able to find out who he is yet?"
"No," he replied. "He's still refusing to talk... well to answer questions anyway."
"What do you mean?" Kagome asked.
"You'll see," was all the monk would say in reply.
He opened the door to one of their holding rooms for her and let her enter first. She heard him step inside and the door closing behind her, but only just, as her entire focus was on the man before her. He was perhaps the most shockingly handsome being she had ever seen.
His eyes were such an unusual golden color, and his gaze was so intense. Long silvery hair flowed down over his shoulders, reaching below his waist and right on top of his head were two furry dog ears. He was bound with chains made from beads infused with spiritual powers, unable to harm anyone, but that didn't stop her from startling as he began to growl and shout all manner of obscenities at her.
Her eyes were wide as he made threats of all kinds amongst his cursing. She wasn't entirely certain that all the things he was promising to do to her were possible or that all his curses were even words that he hadn't made up. Quietly she waited for him to run out of steam. When it didn't appear to be something that would happen any time soon, she shocked him into silence by smiling.
He was clearly thrown off by this, and he looked at her warily. As she moved towards him, his body tensed. The muscles in his arms were ridged, and his jaw was locked. She lifted her arm, and he stared at her defiantly.
"Go ahead, bitch, do your worst," he snarled. "You probably hit like a girl anyway."
Kagome frowned. Did he really think that she was going to strike him? She let her hand continue its course, and soon one of his ears was held gently between her fingers. She rubbed the appendage, admiring how soft it was.
"W-W-What the hell are you doing?" the hanyou stammered. He jerked his head away from her.
Kagome blushed. "I'm sorry. I just... I've never seen a youkai or a hanyou with ears like those, and I really wanted to know if they were as soft as they looked."
"Well, just keep your fucking hands to yourself," he spat. "Kill me if you're going to do it, but don't fucking touch my ears."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I had no right to be so familiar with you," she agreed. "Will you speak to me?"
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "I ain't telling you nothing that will help you kill more of us than you already have."
"Actually, I hope that you might be able to help me find a way to end the killing once and for all," Kagome informed him. "Tell me, why did you think I was going to hit you?"
He snorted. "Keh, you're a miko."
"Yes..." Kagome agreed, not sure of his point.
"I'm not stupid, bitch. I know what happens to youkai who get caught by your kind," his said with no little amount of disgust. "You torture any youkai you get your hands on to find out all the information you can, and then you kill them. And you, you're the worst one of all, because you could stop it but don't. I recognize you, Ka-Go-Me, and if I get out of here alive, then I am going to make it my personal mission to hunt you down and make you suffer."
"You... You think we torture youkai?" she gasped.
The hanyou just rolled his eyes.
"Miroku, get Botan in here," Kagome ordered. The monk nodded and left the room. She looked back at the half demon. "What's your name?"
"Fuck you bitch," he snarled.
"I only ask to avoid having to call you hanyou," she said quietly. "I am going to release you from the chair, but your hands will have to remain bound, seeing as how you desire to kill me."
She moved behind the chair, and as soon as he was free, he backed into the corner of the room. He was crouched in a fighting stance and looked prepared to pounce at any moment. His eyes darted to the door as it opened admitting Miroku and Botan.
"Kagome... What have you done?" Miroku asked.
"We are going to take him to lower levels," she replied. "He won't believe the truth unless we show it to him." She looked at the hanyou. "We don't torture youkai, and we don't kill unless we have to. All I ask is that you come with us and give me chance to show you that what I am tell you is the truth. If I am lying I will release you, but if I'm being truthful, then I want your word that you will tell me who you are and hear me out."
"He killed four men!" Miroku protested.
"Was that before or after you corned him and tried to subdue him?" Kagome asked.
"After, of course, but he was following Tsubaki," Miroku replied.
"Did he attack her?" Kagome pressed.
"Well, no..." Miroku supplied.
"In that case, he has done nothing to warrant our holding him here against his will, beyond investigating why he was following a miko," Kagome said firmly.
The monk looked taken aback. "But he has vowed to kill you."
"Then if he succeeds it will be no ones fault but my own," she told him, and then returned her gaze to the hanyou.
"But Kagome-sama, without you we will have no chance. You are the last-" Botan began only to be cut off by a sharp glare from Miroku. She flushed, realizing that she had just revealed to an enemy their most guarded secret, that Kagome was the last direct descendent of Midoriko.
"I will deal with you later," Miroku promised, and then turned his attention back to Kagome. "The risk you are taking is beyond fool hardy."
"I can think of no risk too great if it would mean the end of all this killing," Kagome replied with quiet authority. She turned back to their captive. "Will you give me your word?"
He studied her face intently. She was beautiful, and her scent was soothing. Her eyes were warm and bright, and her hair looked to be as smooth as silk. More than that though her aura radiated kindness. He didn't want to believe her, and the youkai in him screamed not to agree, that he must take his chance to escape, but the truth was that he did believe.
"You, a miko, would take the word of a hanyou?" he asked.
Kagome nodded and then said, "Will you accept mine?"
"Fine. If I find that you are telling the truth, then I give my word to stay and listen to you and to tell you who I am," he agreed.
It wasn't a truce between the two groups, but it was a start, especially if he was of the Taishou line. Kagome smiled. "And you have my word that you will be released if you find me to be lying. Now, let's go."
Kagome headed for the door and opened it. She motioned for InuYasha to go ahead of her, but he just shook his head.
"I ain't showing you my back," he said.
"Of course. I see your point," she replied with a frown. Then slowly a smile spread across her face. "Then I guess we are left with one solution. You will have to walk at my side."
As a show of good faith, she stepped out of the room before him and then looked back, waiting for him to join her. After a moments hesitation, he followed and found himself standing beside her in the hall. Miroku and Botan, who trusted Kagome completely, took the lead.
The small group made its way through the building. As they reached the top of a long flight of stairs that led underground, Kagome began to speak softly.
"My grandmother was a hard woman," she said. "She was the great miko at the height of the war, when it looked like we might be battling ourselves into extinction."
InuYasha snorted. "Is there a point to this history lesson."
Kagome ignored him and continued, "She did what she thought was best, what she thought she had to do to save our people, and I won't judge her for that. But it does not mean we have followed her example. I tell you this because the area we about to enter was at one time her interrogation rooms. Of course, my mother stopped such practices when she became the great miko and used this area only to hold prisoners. I was tempted not to use this place at all because of its history, but in the end decided simply to make certain changes."
They reached the bottom of the stairs, and the first thing InuYasha noticed was that the wall to his right was made completely out of glass. The room itself was bright and colorful and toys littered the floor. A separate door behind the glass opened and twelve youkai children came running out. They were all smiling and laughing as they began to play.
InuYasha looked to Kagome, surprised to see that her face had grown sad and her eyes damp. "So many..." she whispered.
Then a boy of about six took notice of them and broke into a grin. He waved at Kagome, and it brought the smile back to her face, almost as if the melancholy had never been there at all. He wanted to believe that it hadn't, but he had a rule about deluding himself.
"Who's the kid?" he heard himself ask.
"His name is Kouta. We got a report of a youkai who was breaking into homes and stealing food," she told him. "Apparently, his parents hadn't wanted to take an active part in the war and someone disagreed with that choice so strongly that they murdered them in front of him. He managed to get away, but no youkai would take him in, so now he's here with us and others like him, those abandoned and those who were made orphans by this war."
She sighed softly and turned away from the glass. "I worry about what we are going to do with them all. Already we have more children than beds. Of course, we'll find a place for them..." Her head turned and as she looked at him she paused. "Unless..."
When more than half a minutes has passed with out her continuing he spoke again. "Unless what?"
Kagome shook her head. "That will be something better discussed once we're finished down here. Shall we continue?"
A small part of him wanted to say that it wouldn't be necessary for him to see anymore, since in his heart he knew that he would only be shown more proof that Kagome had been telling the truth. But his head told him that just because someone is kind to children, doesn't mean that they won't torture adults and that he had to see everything if he was going to be able to report to his brother honestly. As if she sensed his problem, she started off down the hall without waiting for an answer.
They passed several doors, all of which had small television monitors beside then at eye level. It wasn't until they reached the end of the hall that she stopped. Kagome placed her hand on a small piece of glass that was inlaid into the door. InuYasha could see that there was a sealing sutra on the other side.
The door opened, and she turned to him. "This is our only empty room in this area and it is where you would have been placed were you to be staying with us."
She stepped inside, and he followed closely behind her. The other miko and the monk remained in the hallway, just outside the door. The first thing he noted was the size of the room. It was quite large for what was supposed to be a prison cell. A quick count told him that there were twelve tanami mats. In one corner a futon was neatly folded and above it were three shelves. On the other side of the room there was sink, a single burner cooking surface, and a small refrigerator. The small table in the room held a single service of dishes as well as radio and television. The television was very old but something told InuYasha that was likely still in working order.
"Unfortunately, it was impractical for everyone to have their own restroom, but we did manage to have one installed between each pair of rooms, so that there is only one other person using the same facilities," Kagome said. "We can't afford a lot of luxuries, but we also managed to provide those who would rather prepare their own meals than be served with means to do so. And we also try too see that any small requests for personal items are met. For example, we are able to provide paper and pens, or art supplies, as well as books - though they are checked out from our library, and have to be returned. "
All in all it really wasn't a bad set up. It was nicer than some apartments he had seen, but in the end it was still a prison- a prison for youkai. "Keh, What happens if someone tries to escape?"
Kagome's brow furrowed, and she looked genuinely puzzled. "I don't understand. My sutra keep them from being able to leave."
"And," he pressed, "what does it do to them? What's the punishment for trying to get out?"
"Punishment?" she said, the word having to fight it's way free of her lips as if it was something dirty better kept unsaid. "Why would we punish what is only a natural reaction to captivity? Of course they want to escape. Youkai aren't animals. They have families and feelings, just like us. That they can't escape is punishment enough."
"You expect me to just take your word for it?" he scoffed.
She sighed. "No. The truth is that while most eventually adjust and accept their situation we do have a few that continue to attempt escape. We keep those few in another area so that they do not disturb the others or frighten the children. If you‘ll follow me, you will see what I mean."
They turned a corner and walked down yet another hallway. InuYasha couldn't get over the size of the space. Surely it had to be as large as the building above them. Again Kagome used her spiritual power as a key, this time unlocking a heavy reinforced steel door.
"We only have three youkai in this section right now," she told him. "Of course, we may have to move some of the others in here soon, since the other section is almost full. When I had the rooms made larger and the bathrooms added it cut in half out holding capacity."
InuYasha watched as she turned on the monitor.
"He's a wolf youkai, but that is all we know," she informed him. "He refuses to tell us his name or anything else for that matter."
InuYasha watched the wolf youkai rage, tearing apart the bedding and turning the already destroyed furniture into splinters. As the youkai threw himself at the door, InuYasha finally got a look at his face, and he barked out a laugh. "Stupid bastard."
Kagome looked at him curiously. "You know him?"
"His name's Kouga. He's the leader of the Western Wolf Youkai Clan, and he's an asshole," InuYasha replied with a smug grin.
"Ah, might you be willing to see if you can identify the other two youkai?" Kagome asked. "It might help if I could address them by name. You see the truth is that we didn't capture the other two. They appeared when we captured... Kouga and refused to leave his side."
Again InuYasha laughed. "I can tell you who those two are without looking then. That'd be Ginta and Hakkaku, Kouga's bitches. They never leave his side. But I don‘t know which is which, so don‘t ask."
Kagome lips quirked, but she held back the giggle. "Well, in that case, that's all there is to see, so let's head back up stairs."
The entire walk back through the holding area InuYasha was in deep thought, and was grateful for the miko's silence. How could their intelligence have been so wrong? He couldn't believe that those he was supposed to despise as dishonorable, prejudiced, violent beings treated their captives far better than they treated their own. It shook him up more than he would ever let anyone know.
Then there was Kagome, the great miko and leader of her kind. Besides being relatively young and extremely beautiful she was nothing like he had been told, or expected. She had treated him with respect despite how he had spoken to her and threatened her life. He didn't like the implications, but he decided that he would have to rethink all he knew and all he had been told was true about her and her side.
When they reached the top of the stairs, and the door was closed behind then, she asked, "Well, have you found me to be truthful?"
He looked into her curious blue eyes. "I am InuYasha, younger brother of the Inu no Taisho and his second in command."
Kagome gasped. She had suspected he was someone important but not this important. They had been lucky to capture him and that more of her people hadn't been killed in the attempt. This could really be her chance to put an end to all this. As a show of good faith she reached out and removed the beads binding his hands.
He looked at her, clearly surprised. "You freed me?"
"I gave you my word," she stated simply.
"Even though I could escape, and even though I vowed to kill you?" he persisted.
"You gave me your word that before you do either of things that you would hear me out," she explained. "One cannot expect to gain trust without first showing trust. Besides I am not without defenses of my own."
InuYasha's youkai flared as her aura expanded, and he was taken aback by the amount of power he could feel coming from her. She gave him a wry grin, and then led the way down the hall towards her office.
