‘The water feels wonderful Rin. Come in!’
Rin buried her toes into cool mud, ‘I don’t want to.’ She squeezed her hands into little fists, ‘I don’t think you should either.’
She knew they needed to return home before it became too dark. Otherwise the path would be difficult to find.
‘Rinnnn…’ Kiyoko whined, ‘We’ve been walking for hours. We smell awful. And no one is around. This could be our only opportunity to have a descent scrub before winter sets in. I know you were there when Lady Kayade spoke about how this is probably one of the last nice days.’
Rin shifted uneasily. ‘She did say that…’
‘Come on Rin!’
I can find it in the dark. I’ve done it before.
With a little smile she tugged at the bow holding her kimono together. Flinging it aside, she easily slipped out of the fabric.
Kiyoko threw her arms in the air and cheered.
Giggling now, she turned and ran naked up the embankment, to a little cliff that overlooked the blue water below.
‘Where are you going?’
‘I want to jump in!’
Kiyoko swam backwards, and Rin looked at the water. She took off at a run and enjoyed the feeling of air rushing around her before plunging into the freezing water.
It was a lot colder than it looked, and deeper too.
Stunned, she floated under water for a moment before kicking upwards towards the surface.
She broke the surface and continued to kick her legs, breathing deep the late summer air. ‘It’s freezing! You lied to me Ki—‘
She turned and felt the words die on her lips.
And she turned again.
‘K-Kiyoko?’
A moonless night gave her little vision, and she squinted her eyes, swimming closer towards shore until she felt her feet hit the rocky bottom. And then she began to wade.
‘Kiyoko? Quit it! Rin doesn’t like this…’
A sound, kind of like gurgling, alerted her to her left.
‘Kiyoko?’ She whispered. There was a human shaped outline.
But no answer. It shook a little.
Rin felt her heart sink. Fear washed over her. Immediately she regretted the decision to get in the water. She should have insisted they go back to the village.
But like all things, Rin hated it when people were upset with her.
‘K-Kiyoko, this is not funny.’
She rose out of the water, not stopping until at least half of her torso was exposed. Her arms were crossed over her meager breasts. And she glanced longingly for her kimono, several feet away.
She wanted to be covered.
‘Kiy-Kiyoko…?’
Something came hurtling at her, and Rin barely managed to dodge it.
Stumbling backwards, she stared in horror at the charred remains of what looked like a human body.
A scream almost made it past her lips but she slapped her hands over her mouth. Rin turned and ran for her clothing, tripping once and skinning her knee.
Almost there…
A sharp pain, and then she was struggling to breathe. Her hands tugged at the hand, but there was nothing.
And then she faced the person doing this to her.
Rin felt her heart swell in recognition…
Even as her vision became darker
