Kagome gawked at the silver haired demon before her, her eyes taking in every detail her breath could process. The inuyoukai had barely aged since she had last seen him, most of it showing in the firm lines of his face. His long silky hair was gathered in a simple ponytail at the base of his neck, as per usual not a stray hair loose. Though he wore traditional clothing, neat lines and somehow looking pressed and freshly clean, it was not the stark white he used to favor in the feudal era. His famed armor was also missing, though she could only assume he had hidden it away somewhere due to the fact it stood out like a sore thumb in her time period. His amber eyes watched her perusing glances with a hint of mild interest, and the usual heavy mask of stoicism.
“It is impolite to keep a guest waiting outside, Miko” he paused for a moment, as if letting her brain register his words, “and to stare” he added. His eye followed her own, waiting to see if she would catch the thinly veiled threat beneath the simply polite words. With a shake of her head as if to clear it, she gave a slight bow and held the door open for him, feeling his penetrating stare before he brushed by her without so much as a thank you or by your leave. As she turned and closed the front door, she found her head filled and buzzing with a million and one questions, her body leading him silently to the kitchen table. His eyes were wandering over her home, as if appraising her modest lifestyle in his own way, however he uttered not a word until the warmth of the kitchen could be felt on his cool skin. The young woman proffed the imposing man in front of her a seat at the table, and as soon as he was settled in she began busying herself making tea, her brain seemingly to work on autopilot while her emotions seem to flux as wildly as the winds. Sesshomaru himself seemed completely at ease, patiently waiting with his hands folded on the table whilst she busied herself, eventually handing him a cup of steaming hot tea and taking an awkward seat across from him. The steam from her dinner was still relatively strong, and though she was hungrier than she cared to admit, it was pushed aside until the demon in front of her could tell her exactly what he wanted. He took an appreciative sniff of the hot beverage, allowing it to cool as he leveled a very stoic stare to the nervous young woman across from him.
“Speak.” His voice cut through the silence so cleanly through the silence that she nearly jumped in surprise, her eyes focusing towards the guest seated in front of her.
“I’m sorry?” she stammered out, her hands gripping her own hot mug in silent comfort.
“I despise repeating myself Miko, speak and ask before I change my mind on the matter,” came his smooth reply, his claws lightly tracing the contours of the earthenware mug.
“How did you get through my barrier?” Her voice blurted out the question before her mind had an opportunity to decide if it was a good idea. Sesshomaru eyed her with apprehension, the corners of his eyes the only telltale sign that she had caught him as off guard as she had caught herself. This was not the question he had expected her to ask first, though silently he found himself congratulating her on the most important question of the evening.
“I am daiyoukai” came his simple response, calmly taking a sip of the warm beverage he held in his claws. When it became apparent to Kagome that this was all the answer she was going to get, she put the information aside for a different time.
“How is it you are not affected by whatever seems to be going on?”
“Miko,” he paused, a single clawed finger coming up to rub his right temple in what appeared to be his patience thinning, “All demon kind, no matter their lineage nor amount of it, have an internal drive, a feral side. For Inu’s it is known as the beast, the inner wolf from which the inu race was descended from.” At her quirked eyebrow he added “And yes we are all aware of such a lineage, which is why the feud between our kinds is so large.” He took another slow sip of tea, as if organizing his thoughts into a way the young human girl would understand. “I am quite sure you saw such a display from my half-brother Inuyasha at least once in your travels with him,” at her nod he continued, “As a Dayoukai, the relationship I have with my beast is decidedly more give and take, and very rarely have I lost control of my baser urges and let the beast out so to speak.” He paused, as if the memories of such times were clear in his thoughts, and with a wave of his hand continued. “Lesser demons such as hanyous do not have such an intimate connection with their inner beast, so when it takes control, they are no longer within functioning capacity with their minds, and rational thought becomes scarce.”
Kagome took a moment to process what the inu before her said, taking a deep drink from her own mug, her brain not failing to comment on the fact that this was the most she had ever heard him speak at any given time. It wasn’t as if he were a stranger when she saw him a lifetime ago, however her interactions with him were limited to one sentence answers and hn. Even when he allied himself with their group, lending his aid to take down Naraku, he spoke rarely and in short clipped sentences, so to hear him give such a length explanation, she was left with a moment to wonder what happened to him the last five centuries to make him seem marginally more approachable.
“So even if a person has the smallest amount of demon blood, they still have the beast?”
“Hn” came the expected usual reply.
“Why did everyone’s trigger at once?”
“I do not know.” At this point she bit her lower lip, her mind sorting the new information into it’s correct spots and formulating her next few questions with care. Her heart screamed at her brain to ask about Inuyasha, to find out about the hanyou that had stolen her heart so many years ago, however the logical side of her brain decided that this was neither the time nor place, and if she ended up seeing Sesshomaru again, that would be the time to ask. However now there were more pressing questions that pertained to the here and now that needed asking.
“I see, so that begs to ask, why are you here?” The corner of his lip twitched ever so slightly, as if this were the question he had been waiting for her to ask. The look in his eye spoke that he was relieved, as if he expected talks to go much much further.
“I seek your assistance,” he started, his hands calmly folding in front of him away from the mug of now cold tea, “I have located the epicenter of the...unrest, far in the northern reaches of Japan. Located in the central portion of Hokkaido, in the mountains, however I cannot approach due to a rather large barrier preventing my entrance.”
“I thought you were Daiyoukai” she stated simply, sending a small jab at the infallible demon before her. She was rewarded with the corner of his eyebrow twitching ever so slightly, relaying to her that the barb had sunk beneath his skin.
“I have had centuries to train my abilities, that think you call a barrier was novice work. However the barrier in which I speak of in the north is much more powerful, and seems to be held in place by many, and not just one underfed and worn out Miko.” His retort was smooth, delivered without any malice in his voice, however his eyes stared into her own as if to challenge his remark, to which none came. All Kagome could do was smirk inwardly, noting how the little barb against his pride had wormed its way deep into his skin and settled in. All in all she was surprised at how well she was handling the entire situation, the benefits of the world going absolutely bonkers she supposed.
“So let me get this straight, you need me because I am completely genuine one hundred percent human, to cross the barrier and figure out what is going on?”
“Something along those lines”
“Ah, I see,” she paused for a moment, her eyes wandering over his face, trying to read the stoic lord in front of her, “Why didn’t you find me sooner?”
“Should I have Miko? Do not misunderstand our last meeting, alliances to defeat enemies do not friendships make.” She paused at that, her mind not wanting to accept the truth, that her entire past in the feudal era was done and forgotten, but she knew that he was right, and there was no lost love between the two of them.
“Terms?”
“You shall accompany me, you are to bring your own supplies, as well as your own weapons, I will not be babysitting you. Once this is done I will return you home” he stated, his eyes boring into hers. She took a moment to idle, knowing that if she gave him the full advantage she would seem desperate, even needy, however after a pregnant pause, she smiled up at him.
“I accept” she stated, standing up and reaching across the table with her hand extended. He rose gracefully and grasped her much smaller hand in hi, her brain noting how warm the outside contract felt after so long, and with a firm shake both parties let go.
“We leave an hour past dawn” he stated simply, watching her nod in agreement, her eyes already looking around to figure out supplies.
“I am assuming you wish to sleep here, there is a bedroom upstairs you may use, down the hall from mine” she said dismissively, her back to him as she began to gather necessary items. She knew he would be able to find the room by pure scent alone, as she had avoided her family’s rooms since the whole ordeal started seven months ago. She heard his footsteps retreat, her hands already reaching for and propping up the big yellow bag, reaching in and pulling out what little supplies were in there. Placing a bottle of meds off to the side, her hand brushed her forgotten meal, letting out a sigh as she realized it was now too late to eat as they had to be up early in the morn. She cleaned the kitchen and dishes, another habit she found herself still doing even though it was no longer necessary for her to do, and returned to packing her rucksack with the proper gear.
Packing wasn’t a big ordeal, she had her experience hopping through time to fall back on, and soon the pack was filled with everything from clothes to medical supplies to enough non perishable food to last two days should she not have the opportunity to scavenge. The yellow pack was propped up in it’s usual place, her bow and quiver right next to it. Kagome gently ran her fingers over the supple wood of the bow, glad she had taken the time to continue to hone her skills with it, sharpening her senses and strengthening the muscles. It was all a matter of survival now, she had no one to rely on but herself, and this was the weapon she was most familiar with. With a sad sigh, she wandered around the downstairs rooms, running her hands over furniture quietly, firmly planting the memory in her mind. She took her last few minutes of her day to enjoy the solitude she had come to accept once more, letting her mind sear the image of her familial home into her brain, letting it fill the spot in her heart so she could always call upon it when she was tired and sick of the road. She had enough scrapes and close calls in the feudal era to know that the memory she made now would carry her through the worst of times. Part of her hoped she would be back soon with the world returned back to normal, but a small portion of her hoped it wouldn’t. The idea of facing the world without her family almost seemed unbearable, and the memories of the last seven months would haunt her in a way it would not those returned to normal. With a resigned shrug of her shoulders, she took one last look at her bulging pack, and headed upstairs to get what sleep she could.
Dawn came too quickly for Kagome’s liking, her eyes cracking open to the burst of light illuminating her bedroom wall. With a grumpy yawn she sat up, rubbing the grit out of her eyes, thanking Kami that her time as a Miko at the shrine had accustomed her to such early mornings. She felt her body come to a bit slower than her brain, her legs stumbling towards her door with a towel over her arm. As she opened her bedroom door, a large white wall happened to be right in her face, earning a yelp in surprise. Kagome had almost forgotten about the white haired inu, and when confronted by his pristine hakama, was forced to pause and gather her fuzzy thoughts. Staring up into his golden eyes, she raised an eyebrow at his stoic face, waiting for him to explain his very close proximity outside her bedroom door.
“30 minutes miko” he stated simply, turning on the ball of his foot and retreating from her door. Shaking her head, she made her way to the restroom down the hall. Cold baths were never pleasant, and though it got her clean it was never a relaxing process, though today it served the double purpose of waking her up quickly. Once she was finished, she dressed in breathable warm gear, her hair in a tight plait and last minute products in her pockets and close by. By the time the 30 minutes had passed, she stood next to the dog demon at the door, her pack on her back and the quiver with the unstrung bow inside of it hooked to her waist.
“We will travel out of the city via my abilities, however the others will be drawn to my Youki, so we must leave at a higher altitude than I would normally fly.” At his words Kagome blanched a bit, but nodded all the same, recalling the cloud he would summon when she last knew him.
“Will we be using that mode of transit the entire journey?”
“No, only to just outside the city,” his voice was clipped and authoritative, making Kagome think that he found it offensive that she would ask such a question. Did he find her company that unenjoyable already? She was under no misconception that Sesshomaru and her traveling together was going to be as fun as a family vacation, nor would be be very forthcoming with his knowledge of past events. However if this was how the whole journey was going to be she might go nuts from trying to dance on eggshells. A few years ago if someone had said she would dance on eggshells for anyone, she would have laughed at them and shaken her head, but now she was alone, and craving any company she could get to, as well as the desperation for things to go back to normal eating away her insides. With a silent grumble to herself, she double checked that her supplies were closed and secure, touching the coiled bowstring in her pants pocket. The bow itself would survive the cold and damp of the high altitude, but the string would not, and would break on her first use. Sesshomaru had no supplies, only his swords strapped to his belt, his hair pulled into a ponytail at the base of his neck, and once more, Moko Moko adorned his shoulder, stirring in the slight breeze. Kagome took a slow breath, steeling her nerves and readying herself for what lay ahead. Kagome remembered the cloud Sesshomaru summoned and internally groaned, her stomach already somersaulting at the prospect of such heights before her feet even had a chance to leave the ground.
“Miko, for this to work you need to be closer than you currently find yourself,” came the baritone, cutting through her endless brain chatter ricocheting off her skull. Nodding with more confidence than she felt, she stepped forward towards the impatient Daiyoukai. She understood his sense of urgency, this was the time of day when nocturnal hunters laid down, and diurnal hunters not quite coming to, it was a magic hour that was being wasted by her own fears. A warmth appeared at her waist, the feel of his hand gripping her torso securely causing her muscles to tense, her breathing growing shallow. Soon the feeling of air rushing past her skin caused her to look somewhere aside from the hakama of the inuyoukai in front of her. The vision of the city rapidly falling away, the transition so sudden she never felt the tingle of the barrier of her home, caused her to swallow a squeak, and she grabbed the hakama in front of her nose and closed her eyes, trying to fight the rising panic that welled deep in her chest.
“Relax Miko, this Sesshomaru will not allow you to fall” came that infuriatingly smooth voice of her companion, his hand holding steady. Somewhere deep in her mind she recognized the return of the royal ‘this’ in front of his name, however it was deep enough that other thoughts raced ahead of it. The young woman had to swallow a laugh, knowing that if anyone who wasing insane saw them, they would assume that the two in the sky were a couple. The idea was so ludicrous that she found the laughter trying to bubble out of her chest, a few whimpers escaping her throat. If Sesshomaru noticed, he never gave any sign of it, his eyes staring ahead, his silence a small comfort as she clung to him.
Eventually she grew comfortable enough with their pace and with his arm around his waist that she dared venture a look around her, watching the city speed past them in a tiny blur. Her eyes watched the skies, the sun warming and rising on their back, which meant they were headed west, towards the mountains that lay outside of Tokyo. Soon her grip on his hakama eased to a more comfortable hold, her eyes watching their path descend into the mountains in question, a few already showing white caps of snow. The lush green of the surrounding trees was a stark relief of the gray of the city below, already some of the louder wild ones already howling and crying out in the early morning. As soon as their feet touched ground, Kagome let go of Sesshomaru, his hand returning to his own side, her eyes scanning their surroundings. Sesshomaru did not seem to notice her looking about, heading towards a pile of leaning rocks away from the treeline.
“Sesshomaru?” She called quietly, her now strung bow held in her hands as she trotted after him.
“There is an opening here, and I need my rest after a flight like that” he stated simply, disappearing into a crevice between two of the larger boulders. Taking out a sutra, Kagome placed it underneath one of the rocks and focused on the well of her miko powers, drawing it forth and erecting a barrier to cover the entrance. The sweet joy she felt each time she grasped at her power was addicting, though she was always careful to not draw too much, it was the feel of life, the reminder that she still lived even in such horrible times. She soon followed Sesshomaru into the cave, letting go of her powers and feeling it draw away back into herself.
“Where are we?” she asked as she entered into a small but cozy cavern, setting her pack down on the wall opposite of where he sat with his eyes closed.
“Mt. Odake” he murmured in response, his youki swirling around him wildly, bit by bit being drawn back into his form. She watched quietly, noting that the use of his ability must have an effect on him that was not previously there, knowing that before he could fly the entire length of Japan and not need rest once his boots touched down.
“That’s nearly 40 miles from where we were,” she murmured in response, pulling out a bottle of water from her pack as the pressure of the cave eased with each passing second. Finally he had his youki in control, his head leaned back against the cavern wall, his brow lightly shining with the sweat of his effort. She offered the bottle of water, knowing it was cool if not cold, but figuring the Daiyoukai in front of her probably needed it. His hand grasped it with the smallest of nods of thanks, drinking deeply from the plastic, placing the empty bottle back in her hand. She retook her seat across the cavern from him, rolling out her bag and setting her supplies on it, taking the time to go over her supplies.
“We rest here until dawn tomorrow, then we set a much firmer pace” he said quietly, not reacting to her noncommittal grunt of agreement. That would give her time to hunt and get a proper meal, even if she could, as well as a fire going to warm up.
‘Magic hour tomorrow, the real fun begins’ she thought to herself, standing up and heading outside to hunt.
