Kirara rubbed up against the shivering Shippo to comfort him. “Disappearing Isle? L-like ghosts?”
“No, not like that.” Kagome smiled at the young kitsune before she continued, noticing Inuyasha's uncharacteristic silence. “He says the island is actually a giant turtle and so it moves or 'disappears'. There's also some kind of barrier that keeps out demons.”
Nodding in recognition, Miroku tasted the stew and added spices.
“I have heard tales of a wandering isle.” As if waking old memories, Sango continued haltingly. “The tale goes that a village wise woman made a pact with a giant turtle for sanctuary. The tale is unclear on why they needed the turtle's protection but, in the tale, the turtle did grant it in return for healing a long suffered malady.”
As Sango spoke Kagome shifted, easing an ache in her healing ankle. Noticing, Inuyasha sniffed, he no blood just a herbal smell. He left and went into another room where Kagome stored her herbal remedies and what was left of her healing supplies from the future. Finding the right salve was made only slightly more difficult by the small container Kagome had reused from the future. Normally he appreciated the way the scent was lessened, he even suspected that Kagome did it thinking of him; tonight it just added another fine layer to his building inner turmoil. He had to admit though that she was getting better at making more effective curatives that smelled better. Sighing, he smiled slightly, she had grown so much since they'd first met. Still, he didn't like that Kagome was hurt, a hurt that would probably be no trouble where she came from, where she choose to leave for him. Kagome....
–-------
The others glanced at the door as Inuyasha left. Miroku raised an eyebrow, Kagome shrugged lightly. She knew there was no point in pressuring him to talk at least not until the others were gone, maybe not even then. She continued on. “Yes, it sounds like the same village. It seems that on her way to Sesshomaru Rin ended up on the island, and it may not have been her idea.”
Silently Inuyasha returned and sat cross legged in front of Kagome. Gingerly he lifted her injured foot into his lap, Gently unwrapping the stretchy fabric from her foot. He noticed how it was wrapped in case he needed to put it back. After opening the small tub of salve he applied it gently to her bruised and swollen ankle.
“I-Inuyasha?” Kagome blushed. Between his caressing movements and the way the salve took away the pain from her injury, she was hard pressed not to moan. She really didn't want the others to notice how good this was making her feel. It was just her foot after all, it really shouldn't-
“Stay still.” was all Inuyasha would say.
Easy for you to say... she retorted internally.
Miroku cleared his throat and tried not to laugh. “So he can't go get her and he can't attack the turtle for fear of hurting Rin. So he wants us to go, is that about right?”
“That's about it.” Inuyasha replied, still lightly massaging Kagome's foot.
“But if there's a barrier to keep demons out how can we go?” Shippo tilted his head in confusion.
“I-I'm sorry Shippo, would you mind staying with Kaede or Kirara?” Kagome said attempting a normal tone. Inuyasha you're doing this on purpose aren't you? She tried not to shift.
“What about you Inuyasha, you're a … Oh.” A look of realization crossed Shippo's face.
Inuyasha's hands stilled. “I'm a what?”
“He just means you're uniquely qualified.” Sango tried to qwell the oncoming argument before it started.
He humphed looking down at Kagome's foot and back up to her face. “Do you need me to wrap your foot again?”
“N-no, it's fine like that for now, I just need to keep it elevated to help it heal.” Kagome wanted to kick herself for stammering and blushing, she wasn't a school girl anymore.
A minuite later Kagome's ankle was propped up on a couple of pillows that had made it back to the past. Inuyasha sat next to her again he peered into her face,“Hey, your face is red,” his voice was the concerned quiet reserved for her, which was nice and all, except all of their guests were starring, except Kirara. Kirara was definitely going to get a treat later. He placed his forehead against hers “Do you have a fever?”
“I'm fine, really Inuyasha.” She pushed him back gently but firmly, not that it did much good.
He moved back on his own. “No you seem fine.”
Miroku cleared his throat again, trying to hide a smirk “Not that I don't enjoy the show but supper is going to get cold and we need to figure out what we're going to do.”
It was Inuyasha's turn to redden and look awkward. “Look here monk, you're the one in our home with no notice.”
“Very true, so you should be making the meal.” Miroku quipped back.
“Looks like Miroku missed him almost as much as you,” Sango whispered to Kagome
“Sango!”
The meal and banter continued late into the night. By the end they had planned their trip to the last known location of the mysterious island for 2 days time. Inuyasha wanted to wait longer, Kagome wanted the next day, and the other's were cautiously quiet. The new moon was only a little over a week away so they needed to move quickly regardless.

“Here, let me,” Inuyasha's quiet whisper broke Kagome's reverie. She had been deep in thought and wasn't sure when he had come in. He sat behind her on the bed taking the brush from her hand.
His fingers felt so good in her hair. She remembered the first time he had brushed her hair he had been so gentle it had surprised her. She had hurt her hand while they were on a mission together and couldn't do it herself. He hadn't said much then either.
“What's on your mind?” His voice was as gentle as his hands.
“I was just thinking about the first time you brushed my hair.” She responded quietly. Shivering pleasantly when he brushed her neck with his fingers.
He hummed. “You hurt your hand fighting bat demons and the brush didn't feel right in your left hand.” He paused in brushing and sighed.
She half turned to see him, “That wasn't your fault you know, and neither is my ankle now.” She touched his cheek. He still wouldn't look at her. “Inuyasha?”
“Are you sure staying here in the past was the right thing for you? It's so much easier to get hurt here and healing takes so much longer when things can be healed.” He wouldn't look at her.
“I-Inuyasha...?” she didn't like where this was going, or the look on his face.
“If there was a way back would you go?”His quiet whisper would have been inaudible even over the quiet swoosh of brushing hair, if he hadn't already stopped.
“There's no-” Kagome's reply was automatic, quiet and cut off.
“Would you go?” Inuyasha was just as quiet but persistant.
“No...”
“But you'd be safer,-”
“No.”
“Heathier-”
“No.”
“Happier.” Inyasha finished just as quietly as he started. There was no fight in him.
“Inuyasha I said 'no'!” Alternative to Inuyasha Kagome gradually grew louder , she turned to face him fully, momentarily forgetting their guests and shouting the last words at him.
“Kagome listen...” His voice was pleading.
“No you listen. I choose to stay because I love you. I wouldn't be happy without you.” Kagome cried back at him. I am not going to cry, not now.
“I know you miss your home and family in the future. You've been talking in your sleep.” He was still calm and quiet. He looked into her eyes.
She just glared at him willing back tears. Why is he saying this? Does he want me to go away? Doesn't he want me anymore?
He took her quiet as permission to continue, he had to make her see but he didn't know how. “You aren't safe here Kagome.” He reached to wipe the tears that had started down her cheek.
She flinched away. “Don't touch me.” Her voice was the quiet deadly one that he only heard when she was really upset. He drew back. “If you don't want me anymore just say so, don't hide behind – behind – behind my past.” She leveled a look at him when he looked like he'd interrupt. “I'm here because I choose to be.” She moved to get up.
He took her hand before she could get far. “Kagome. I'm serious. There is a way...” He looked away from her again. “...and I think you should go.”
“Inu...” The tears were coming in more fully now and her voice was muffled by them. “There's... You want... but...” She tried to shake off his hand. “Let go. Let go. Let go. Let go!” Her voice grew louder again until she screamed at him again. “Sit!” She ran as well as she could from him shouting “Sit” when she heard him calling or following. In turn her ankle screamed at her. How could he after all this... Why would he? I thought we were happy...
