After lunch had come and gone the office really got busy. Calls were coming in for all of the offices left and right, clients were coming and going and she had begun to meet all the staff one by one. Kagura and Kanna were the two other assistants in the office, Yura, Miyoga, Bankotsu, Naraku, and Kikyo were the other lawyers in the building. Besides Sango and Miroku, Kikyo was the only other human and it was very clear that she had a crush on Inuyasha and was a registered miko of minimal power. She could do the basics of healing and sutras and 'cleansings' but from what Kagome felt she doubted the wards would work against anything other than a weak spirit.
Bankotsu and Naraku had yet to come into the office, but Kagura had told her that they only came in for client appointments and had none that day. She had spent her down moments researching talismans for priestesses and had a list made in her head of what she needed. But she was having problems finding the specifics for what she wanted so she concluded she would have to customize it and guess. Miroku called her desk and asked her to come to his office, she erased the browser history and logged out of the computer so no one could access the files without her password. She entered his office and waited for the door to close to sit down, patiently staring at him as he sat in silence.
“How is your first day?” She blinked.
“It's been good, is this what you called me in here for?” he laughed a little, “Whats so funny?”
“It's almost like you thought you were in trouble.” he had tears forming in his eyes as she frowned. “No, I called you in here because this is usually when I leave the office.”
Kagome looked at the clock, four o'clock on the dot. “Oh. Does that mean I leave too?” she was blinking.
“Yep. Since you are my assistant if I am not here you don't need to be either.” he seemed proud, almost like he was giving her candy.
“But everyone else...” she was cut off.
“Has jobs to do. Your's is done.” Miroku was still giddy like a child. The day had gone so smoothly with Kagome there. He had actually gotten ALL of his work done for a change. “Besides, after four I meet with people at other establishments for business.” At her confused expression he explained, “Golf, bars, their offices, restaurants.” she nodded quickly and he continued. “I do not require you come to those unless it has been discussed before hand. Otherwise your day is done when mine is.”
Kagome was happy, but then she had a thought. She was the only person at the desk that was in charge of Miroku's and Inuyasha's extensions. “What about Inuyasha? I get calls for him at my desk too?” She saw Miroku's face fall, he had forgotten that part apparently.
“He leaves whenever her wants, but he usually stays here long after everyone else is gone. That man can work..” he shivered a bit, “I on the other hand enjoy time outside of this place. It is up to you, I will pay you no matter how many hours you stack up. Stay if you want, go home if you want. I am just so pleased that you are here, it was truly chaos before you.”
“It looks like it’s still chaos with me here.” She gestured to his rather dysfunctional work space. His trash can had a mound of crinkled up papers around it as if he had been playing basketball with them, his desk was scattered with open files and post its of the sort, even his computer desktop was too full.
Miroku sheepishly rubbed the back of his head. “I will take care of it tomorrow.” he began gathering his items for his briefcase.
“I will see you later Miroku, I imagine Sango will drag you along for drinks as well.” He laughed and nodded as she left his office, she settled at her desk and debated staying and going. She wanted to go home and start the process of making her talisman, but she also needed the money on her paycheck so she stayed and worked. She sorted through emails, sent mail and packages off, forwarded calls to Inuyasha, and took messages for Miroku before the office officially closed and she was able to brush up on Miroku's calendar for appointments; she made a note to call and verify each appointment and mark it on his calendar on his desk thirty minutes early for each. She organized everything by the time she realized Miroku had been right, Inuyasha was still here even when the cleaning crew came in.
She watched them skip Miroku's office and sighed. He must have locked it so they couldn't get in. So she did it since the spare key he had given her was a master key; she hoped he forgot that part forever since he was still before-coffee-Miroku when he did it. She went into the office and cleaned up all the trash she could find, she rearranged his desk so it was organized and brutally obvious on placement so he would not die of panic when he got in tomorrow. She even rearranged his computer desktop, making files for things and deleting junk; after a quick glance at his system she decided he needed a few things to make it easier for him. So after downloading five different programs, deleting twice as many (though she left Mahjong for his sanity), and updating the rest of them his computer ran faster, and everything he would possibly need for his day was neatly arranged in rows in alphabetical order. The files on his desk were put back together and the post its were all placed in the inside covers of the appropriate folders.
She was proud of herself; but just in case, she put post its with lists and directions around everything so he would not be lost. He had an Idiots Guide to My Desk by Kagome because she had seen him try to be organized and it was terrifying. Inuyasha had come out of his office when he was done with his final draft of a speech he had to give, used to being the only one there this late he was in his head when he jumped at the sudden noise from Miroku's office. He knew that the cleaning crew had come and gone since it was almost seven, he also knew Miroku was gone. He took a quick sniff of the air, Kagome. He was confused, she should have gone when everyone else did. He walked silently to his friends office and saw her finishing up her cleaning. He had never seen the room look so tidy. “Ya know,” she jumped and spun to look at him, “Mirkou might think he is in the wrong office tomorrow and wander out half way asleep to find the right one.” he was trying not to laugh.
Kagome had been scared senseless, the damn dog demon had snuck up on her again. “Dammit Inuyasha!” She sat down in Miroku's chair, which was very comfy, and took a breath as she closed her eyes. “The next time you scare me like that I will get revenge.” She warned softly, hoping he took her seriously, but his laughter said he didn't. “Yeah, you laugh now.” she smiled and stood back up, pushing the chair in.
“It's almost seven, don't you have a home to go to?” Kagome's eyes widened.
“Oh no.” She mumbled, rushing past Inuyasha to her desk around the corner. Her phone had a dozen text messages from Sango. She read through them quickly and groaned. Sango had been waiting for her outside an hour ago, but had assumed she took the train home and left after she never came out. She had then tried to call her, but after two failed attempts sent a message saying that she was going home because obviously the day had killed her friend and they would go out tomorrow to celebrate making it through the day and to get rest.
Inuyasha came around the corner, leaning against the wall in a way that distracted Kagome momentarily. “Problem?” he questioned.
“I was supposed to go out with Sango after work, but I got distracted here and missed it. And she was my ride and my dinner date so I have to go now, otherwise it will get dark before I reach the train.” She tossed her phone in her purse and picked it up. “Thank you for making my first day,” She paused, smiling a bit. “Interesting. I will see you tomorrow Inuyasha.” She walked past him then, set on her journey, when his hand grabbed her wrist.
“I'll give you a ride...” he looked like he was shocked that he even said it, so much so that he looked down at his hand before releasing her. “I mean, if you don't want to take the train this late.” he rubbed the back of his head. “Lots of creeps…” he mumbled.
Kagome blinked a few times then smiled, “Sure.”
They left the building without speaking, both as perplexed as the other on why they were doing this. Inuyasha was apprehensive for another reason though, he had brought his bike to work that morning. After locking the office building he rubbed the back of his head and looked down at her, “Ever been on a bike before?”
Kagome stared at him, her mind going to her bicycle she rode to school. “Yes.” he started walking down the steps and around to the small parking garage, she followed him automatically until she saw the 'bike' he had been referring too. “No. Nonono. I think I will take the train.”
Inuyasha laughed a little, she seemed more afraid of the bike which was made by humans than by the logically far more dangerous demonic being in front of her. “Typical human.” he taunted after a moment, remembering all the stories Miroku had told him. Imply she can’t, and she will to spite you. He could feel her aura bristling against him now, and he was smirking. He stared at her, watching her weigh the options of the challenge and it was down right sexy. She stood there, biting her lip, eyes locked right with his, she was tense but slightly angry which gave her the presence of a snake. She could easily strike or just slither away, right out of his grasp. Inuyasha snapped his mind back into reality and started to climb on the bike, turning it on so it roared in the garage. “You comin slow poke?”
She narrowed her eyes but started to walk towards him, figuring out the best way for her to get on and hold her purse over her shoulder and hold onto him. Hold onto him, she was already on the bike when she realized she had to hold onto him. “How do I hold you so you can drive good?” She could feel him laughing for a minute before his hands gently took hers and guided them around his upper body. “Helmet?” He glanced back at her with a grin she recognized already, but before she could object they were moving and she was holding onto him tightly.
The sun was setting and the streets were starting to get busy, but to Inuyasha that didn't matter. Sango had been the most terrifying part of her day, until this moment, because he was weaving in and out of cars, sidewalks, alleys and running lights like they were the only two on the road. She had screamed when she briefly saw the red light they practically flew under, felt him laugh once more. She risked another glance but didn't look around them, instead she looked at him. She tried to figure out why he was laughing. That was when she noticed that he was as relaxed as he had been in his office earlier. She suddenly felt like a stupid woman again, he was part demon; his senses were amplified and to him this must have been like a jog. She was probably safer on his bike than she was in a car she was driving. He could react to things quicker than she could. Logic won over her fear and she started to feel her body relax against his, she lost track of everything. She felt free for just a moment, free enough that she closed her eyes and it was like she was falling down a well into a world of peace.
The bike started to slow down and she took note of the shops around, “Figured you were hungry, and even if you aren't I am. So dinner is on me if you want any.” he pulled up to a small hole in the wall ramen shop. “This place has the best ramen in Japan. And I have eaten at most of them.” Jinenji's was the only word written on the wall, but it was in blue neon and lit up softly, she had never heard of it but Inuyasha was pulling the bike up right along side the building and shutting it off.
She didn't know how to get off the bike yet, her legs were jell-o and her body was humming from the ride, but Inuyasha somehow got off the bike and was helping her off as well. “Thanks. That was... interesting.” She laughed a little. “I don’t even know where we are? Or how fast we were going.” She was slightly fired up from it now that she was off the bike, she wanted to ride again.
“You don't want to know. Lets eat then get you home, gods know Miroku will probably need saving in the morning so I wont keep you out too late.” he winked at her, his ears twitching which had her eyes torn between looking at him or at his ears. He caught it this time, “Those are mine.”
Kagome visibly shivered and squeaked a little. “I wasn't going too!” she panicked.
“Then how did you know what I was talking about?” he walked into the ramen shop smirking after that. She was silenced and staring at him with her mouth open. Caught.
After a moment she walked in after him, mumbling about stupid cute ears and the temptations of life. He smirked a little but walked past the hostess who ignored him practically and seated himself at a table near the very back of the establishment by the kitchen door. Odd choice for most people, but Kagome didn't say anything. When they sat down a waitress brought Inuyasha water with lemon and then looked to Kagome, waiting for her order. “Oh. The same please.” She smiled as the woman nodded and walked away.
“You can get anything you want, ya know. My treat.” Inuyasha looked at her, she was a marvelous puzzle and one hell of a treat for a dog demon. But she was a Miko, though his inner demon did not seem to care. He couldn't figure out where the words that kept echoing in his head every time he would begin to truly look at her were coming from.
“Thank you. But I like water, the lemon is just to cover up the city taste it has compared to good water.” Inuyasha nodded a bit in understanding, “I haven't eaten ramen in so long.” She started to speak, but was cut off by the towering shadow that engulfed their table as a demon hovered over them. A brief moment of panic set in and she snapped her eyes to what might be a threat, but the moment she laid her eyes on Jinenji the reiki in her died down to its normal simmer.
“Then I will be sure to prepare something extra special.” Jinenji spoke softly, making Kagome blush. “And you, Inuyasha, why would you bring a date here! There are far better places.”
“Woah woah! No way. Jin. Stop. She is a coworker.” Inuyasha was slightly red, Kagome was sipping water like it was alcohol.
“Oh. My apologies.. But she is very lovely and I assumed-” Jinenji tried once more, knowing he was pushing the right set of buttons for the hanyou.
“Jin. Ramen for Kagome and myself. Please.” Inuyasha glared at his friend.
Jinenji smiled, “Kagome. Lovely to meet you. Do you have a last name?” Inuyasha was actually growling softly at this point.
“Oh. Um. Higurashi. Kagome Higurashi.” she stood then and bowed her head in greeting politely, still feeling like an ant next to the demon. Jinenji's joking stopped instantly.
Inuyasha looked up at him in confusion, Kagome was still unaware since she was seating herself once more. “Higurashi. Any relation to Kato Higurashi?” Kagome stopped breathing.
“My father.” She whispered
“You will never pay for food in this establishment Kagome.” with that Jinenji turned around and left, leaving behind two very confused people.
Inuyasha tried to lighten the mood, seeing that she was upset but trying to hide it. “That just isn’t fair. I have known him for over a hundred years and I still pay full price for food.” He watched her smile a bit.
They didn't see Jinenji again, but the ramen they were served was as promised. The best in Japan. When the bill was presented Inuyasha laughed, gaining her attention fully since it sounded so much like the free laugh of a child. “Well, what do you know. I got a discount. That settles it, you are coming with me every time I eat here.” she rolled her eyes before adding to the tip pile, as well as instructing for a portion to go to the cook. Jinenji watched as the pair walked out of his shop, “Be careful, my friend.” he whispered to the gods.
After giving him brief instructions to her home Kagome let herself forget the day and enjoy the ride until they were pulling up to the steps that led to her house. “You live in a shrine? Ya know, for a Miko who is pretending to not be a Miko, this is not the best cover.” she laughed and he wanted to hear more of it.
“It was left to me. After my mother died it was willed to my brother and me. But he is in college in America and plans to stay there. So it is mine. Besides, the goshinbaku is over a thousand years old and my most favorite place in all of Japan to just sit and think. With each step the hanyou took up the shrine stairs he could feel more and more of her energy seeping into him. It was like she left a part of herself behind every time she left the grounds and when it finally reunited with her it was explosions of power and aura. Once he was able to feel past the body numbing experience it was to have her energy completely wash over him to scan him for malice or ill will he was no longer bombarded by her power and could make out the specifics scents and locations around the shrine.
Kagome had kept moving as her barrier stilled the hanyou midway up the stairs as it did everyone be they human, demon, or holy. The effect had would be different for each, humans would simply get caught staring in wonder and then continue, demons and holy beings would understand the sweep. She had no need of sutras because the magic simply happened on its own when she wanted it done. She was at the top of the steps when Inuyasha was released and felt him come past her line and into her sanctuary. She faltered in her steps, however, when she looked ahead of her and the only being that could ever evade her detection was sitting on the bench under her tree. “Sesshomaru.” She greeted softly, feeling Inuyasha stiffen momentarily before continuing up the steps to stand at her back since he was her guest at the moment and did not know how to react to seeing his older half brother at her residence.
“Kagome.” Inuyasha’s eyebrow rose, they were on first name terms. “I received and interesting phone call this morning. Can you imagine who it was from?” The stoic demon spoke clearly, though his voice was barely raised at all she heard him clearly.
“How would I know such things Sesshomaru? All I did was go to work today and then go eat and come home. No drawing attention to myself, no anything. Just normal human girl. Nothing special here.” Kagome sounded like she was repeating a mantra aloud.
“It seems you are now working with my younger half brother.” He did not need to gesture to the silent hanyou. “That is an almost all demon firm with the exception of three humans, well. Now four.” His tone was disapproving, almost like a mentor that was disappointed with his pupil.
“My friend owns it. I have an excuse to be working there without being a-“ she was cut off by Sesshomaru.
“The only humans that work there are REGISTERED holy beings.” Kagome flinched, he had stood to his full height when he mentioned the registry. Inuyasha had taken an involuntary step forward, Sesshomaru’s icy glare settled on him. “Why are you here half breed?” Inuyasha balled his fists.
Kagome answered that question, sudden heat and anger in her voice. No one treated her friends badly. “I missed my ride from Sango, who by the way DOESN’T HAVE HOLY POWERS, because I was WORKING. He drove me home.”
Sesshomaru could have foamed at the mouth. All the years he spent teaching the woman how to use her powers, how to hide herself, how to be cautious and control everything around demons by using his own aura to train her and here she was threatening to destroy his work, the old crones work, all for a paycheck?! “Stupid human. You no longer work there, you will be paid weekly by my company. Accepting rides from strange demons without-“ she cut him off then, something only Rin could get away with as far as Inuyasha knew, but apparently she could as well. Who the fuck was she?
“You are being rude. He is not a stranger. He is friend and your brother. I know of your family and the honor it holds so dear. Your father had it for my ancestor and you have it for me, and Inuyasha proved he had honor when he helped me with my sudden spikes today and held his tongue so no one would see it. I do not need another lecture from you Sesshomaru. My days of lessons and this are over. You made sure of that, I don’t want your charity.” She turned her back on him and walked to her front door, refusing to listen to a thing he said until he was no longer being rude.
She was inside her house when the brothers exchanged a look. “Naraku works at your firm.” Sesshomaru stated. “He must never know about her Inuyasha.”
“I don’t even know about her. I only saw the reiki because I was looking for it. She hides it perfectly. Who is she?” He knew Sesshomaru wouldn’t tell him, but he had to ask anyways.
“Figure it out half breed, if you can.” Sesshomaru left then, his perfectly tailored suit making sure he looked graceful as he walked. Inuyasha walked over to the door, debating on if he should walk in or knock.. he walked in and glanced around. “Kagome… can I come in? How in the hell can you talk to Sesshomaru like that and still be breathing?” He wanted to know more about the history of this wildly captivating woman. He needed to know. His inner demon was stirring in ways it never had and it made him feel the whispering primal instinct. He needed to see her the more he was around her. It bothered him.
She walked down the hall in a huff. “Fluffy can go chew on a stick if he thinks he can boss me around like I’m still a child!” She all but growled and it impressed him.
“Don’t let him hear you call him that.” He chuckled.
“I used to all the time.” She waved at him off handedly. He widened his eyes. Just who the fuck was she.
Kagome glanced at him as she was tidying up the clean house in frustration. He looked dumbfounded. “I was your brothers ward until I turned of age. When my father died … him and an old priestess named Kaede took me and hid me, my mother said she sent me to my aunts because I was traumatized but I was living with your brother and Kaede. They taught me how to control myself, but when Kaeda died it was just Sesshomaru, and I was alone when he wasn’t there. So I came home and when momma died, well Sesshomaru tried to make me come live at his estate and keep me hidden away. I didn’t allow that and it ended in us both being on bad terms and injured.”
“Why?” Was all he managed to put together. None of it made sense. He was trying to put all the pieces together but just couldn’t. His brother never cared for humans, Rin had been an exception and that centuries ago.
“Because he is an arrogant ass.” Inuyasha laughed and she tried to deter his mind because she wasn’t ready to reveal her secrets to him yet. “Oh! Can I use a drop of your blood for my talisman?”
He stopped laughing and looked at her like she had grown horns. “Why in the hell would I let you do that?”
She smiled. “Because your blood is the strongest I have felt besides Sesshomaru and we know I can’t ask him for a precious drop of his unsullied blood.” The disdain in her voice when she spoke that was not lost on Inuyasha, “It will help conceal the reiki when it flares up at work. It will help push it back down and mix with it so the air doesn’t feel different than when Miroku has a flare up or you do when you are on a phone call you don’t like.” She was proud of herself for coming up with the idea.
Inuyasha was impressed. “Well. When you put it like that.. I guess that is alright with me." he should have said no. His blood was precious and a lot could be done to him from having it, but his inner demon practically purred at knowing he would be helping protect her.
