They traveled faster than Kagome had expected, it had taken half the time to get back since she was able to ride on Inuyasha’s back while Sango, Miroko, and Shippo rode on Kirara’s larger form. It had been slightly irritating to know the real distance they had traveled but had been forced to take slow as they combed through every village, cave, and crevice they found for any signs of Naraku or his minions. The routine was still the same but Kagome couldn’t seem to understand why it felt like Inuyasha’s heart wasn’t actually in it. Granted, she was pleased when the insults stopped on the second day, but was concerned when he practically didn’t speak more than was needed on the third day. By the end of day four even Sango noticed the odd behavior among the males since not a single word was said as she pulled Kagome along for a dip in a hot spring near by, they came back almost an hour later and not a single grunt from the half demon when normally ten minutes was too long.
Any questions thrown at the stubborn silver haired half demon were thwarted with either “Quit bothering me.” Or “I’m focusing on making sure I don’t accidentally miss a wiff of the bastard we are huntin while we head home- stop distracting me.” But even the bite in his responses didn’t seem genuine. Something was wrong and he wasn’t telling her. If she could growl she would have; each time. When they got to Kaede’s Inuyasha had glanced at Miroku and then left without a word. Sango had assured he was simply going to hunt for some fresh meat since they had traveled so much and needed a good meal.
Kagome didn’t buy it. “Miroku…” She walked quickly towards the monk that was walking to the river in town, “I need to speak with you.” She caught up to him easily and started walking in pace with him. He looked down at the young priestess and smiled, nodding a bit. He knew what she was going to ask and was not disappointed, “Have you noticed anything strange with Inuyasha?”
“He is stuck in his own thoughts.” He knew this wouldn’t deter her and even though he knew Inuyasha wanted to tell her Miroku knew he could explain it better and at the same time would not plant seeds of being wary of perverted ways. This was not about that and he needed her to know that. Her confusion was obvious in her brown eyes and before she could speak he did instead. “I have figured out why you are plagued by night terrors and why your miko abilities seem to be having their momentary fits.”
Kagome almost stumbled in her kimono. Gone was the uniform- she was tired of her mother having to spend money on new ones because of demon attacks; she was currently in a green kimono that seemed to be as alive as wind kissed fields on a summer morning. “What is it?” She grasped his arm lightly and looked up at him, willing him to stop moving. “Please tell me. I can’t-” she didn’t want to keep talking. “The dreams are worse now Miroku… I die in them. It is like something inside of me explodes like a bomb.” The monk made a face at her modern term. “It is something humans created that explodes like … a volcano and a sun all at once. It is chemicals and ingredients all mixed together and they are set off and explode and destroy whatever they are around. They can be small and fit in your hand so it isn’t too big of a event or they can be big enough to take out whole cities. There is a whole bunch of technical stuff… I will show you my books some other time.”
Kagome had been rambling. Rambling about things she knew he didn’t understand but it made her feel better to try and explain something to him than have him explain why she was terrorized every night and had lost faith in her abilities due to them seeming to run out of juice like a dead battery quickly when she used them. Miroku knew she was ‘rambling’-as she had called it once-because she was nervous. With how Inuyasha had acted and his sudden declaration she had every right to be. And honestly when he had been told those same words as a small child he thought his teacher was going to say it was his imagination. That wasn’t the case. “Your miko powers are attacking you in your sleep.” He paused, seeing the argument building in her eyes and shook his head; he watched her bite her lip to keep from talking. That was distracting, ‘NO! No perverted thoughts. Kagome’s safety!’ he scolded himself.
“We all know that the Shikon was housed inside your body, and that you are it’s vessel and protector.” She was nodding as he spoke, “We also know that there are no demons-that you know of- in your time. And that while you were there to begin with you had no spiritual connection to it. You were merely its protection and from what I have put together I believe it solidifies your theory of demons being nearly-if not already extinct in your time. That makes me believe the Shikon and your powers were not active in your time to begin with because the power wasn’t sought after and you had no reason to defend it so every bit of your power went into the jewel for its slumber rendering you a normal mortal girl.” He had watched her follow his logic and was pleased that she could see his reasoning behind his answer thus far. “For some reason fate had plans to drag you here and we know the story up to this point years later. The power that spent so long keeping the Shikon dormant in your body was able to do this by nullifying the demon power and blood that helped form the jewel along with that of Mirdoriko’s very life as well. The Shikon shards that Naraku have are tainted by his malice- half of the jewel. The half you have is pure as life itself.” She once again nodded and looked slightly annoyed at being relayed already known information.
“What does any of this have to do with my night terrors and fluctuating powers, Miroku?” The sun was slowly vanishing and the village was starting its late night routine of shutting down vendors and gathering children to make meals. She was also getting hungry and tired and wanted to rest and the monks answers were making her wait on fixing those problems.
“I do not believe the Shikon was ever meant to leave your body. It was supposed to stay in your body until your time was up and you left this world and it chose a new protector to manifest itself in for protection. When Mistress Centipede tore it from your body I believe it left a taint of the demon presence in you. Not something that can be activated or that can hurt you, it would be more like a birthmark to your aura. Forever having that small spec of demonic energy in it. When you sleep, your powers go into overdrive and protect you and your loved ones that are around you. I have seen this myself. That is when I think your powers attack the source of demonic energy that it feels.”He finished and let her digest what he had said, waiting.
She felt like the rug had been pulled out from under her feet. She was tainted? His quick explanation made her feel better but she still suddenly felt dirty for some reason. She was the Shikon Miko-purest of the pure… and tainted apparently. “But if it is ME then why is my power attacking me if the energy isnt a threat?” She was trying not to cry at the moment and took a long, shaky breath. She had a sinking feeling her dreams were not just dreams, but warnings about what could happen and the more Miroku spoke the more she believed that small voice telling her to be careful.
“Kagome,” Her eyes widened a bit- he hardly used a serious tone with her. He was light and caring and perverted. But this was not that Miroku; this was a more dominant presence now. “The demon that is a part of the Shikon was so powerful that it took his death and Midoriko’s to seal it away and yet it still plagues the earth in the form of a tiny harmless looking jewel that fits in your palm. That tiny jewel could destroy this world. Your powers only feel that- the potential and the magnitude of the evil that it is and can be. Your power will keep going after that energy until it destroys it.” That didn’t sound so bad, Kagome thought, but the emotion must have showed on her face because his face fell a bit before he controlled his features. “To destroy that would mean it had to destroy the thing holding the energy- you.” She was blinking up at him, her stomach was turning and she could taste bile on her tongue. This wasn’t happening. She had faced hundreds of demons, hundreds of moments where death was acceptable. But this wasn’t like that, it wasn’t a battle or survival. It was her body trying to kill her all the time.
Kagome threw up. She had stumbled near the edge of the river to do so, and after took a moment to rinse her mouth out and wash her face off. “Can you fix it?” She whispered- he had barely heard her.
“No.” He heard her sob softly and rushed over to her, helping her stand up. “Kagome. I said I couldn’t. But you can.” She was shaking and gripping him tightly. She didn’t care if it looked intimate or inappropriate; she could barely hold her own weight and everything was spinning. “I can take you to the temple hidden in the mountains where others of great power have had to go to tame their power and learn control that would make the Lord of the Western Lands jealous. Please don’t despair Kagome. This can be fixed with proper training, you just have to be willing to go with me.”
All the information was spinning in her head so fast she could barely make out his words and then something he said hit her and made everything come to a stand still. “Miroku- if the temple is hidden and provides the knowledge you suggest… How do you know where it is? And why haven’t demons destroyed it?” She stepped out of his grasp, able to support herself now that her panic attack was over. Granted, the anxiety from it all was still roaring at her like river rapids but she could focus more; years of fighting demons and training finally paying off!
“Because only someone who has trained there can find it and guide others to it. And demons dare not go near the temple’s mountain for fear of losing their lives. The masters of the temples are savage and ruthless when it comes to protecting their territory.” He left it at that- he was unsure how she would handle the news that it would be both demons and holy beings training her. If he had been told that he was being delivered to demons as a child he would have ran away. Kagome was stronger than that but he still had to follow the rules- she would find out for herself. She still wasn’t speaking and he thought perhaps he had finally stunned her into shock. That was when Sango happened to walk up, right as he was grasping Kagome’s shoulder to try and get her to speak or at least look like she was breathing.
“PERVERTED MONK GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF HER!” He was unconscious before he had a chance to explain himself. It always seemed to work like that with the demon slayer he had developed feelings for and after a while was becoming bothersome. He might have been perverted, yes, but he had severely calmed himself down. He didn’t harass girls in every town, he didn’t try to follow them to the hot springs, he had even stopped groping the female companions of his group. The only time he flirted now was if he was in the tavern in the towns or trying to get them a roof and bed to sleep in instead of a campfire lit sleeping circle. But Sango had failed to notice this and took every opportunity to curse his horny ways that were tamed and knock him senseless. He was groaning and the noise told him he was waking up, his eyes slowly opened a few moments later and he was sitting up in his hut. Inuyasha was crouched down by the small fire with stew cooking on it. Stew? Just how long had the damn woman made him sleep for this time!?
“What did ya do this time, monk?” The half demon threw the remark over his shoulder.
“Nothing. I was telling Kagome about the temples and it looked like she was in shock. I merely reached out to touch her shoulder when Sango came hollering with intentions of murder I swear.” The silver ears twitched and Miroku knew his friend was smiling, though Miroku was slightly put off about Sango’s actions he still over played it in a fake hurt tone to keep his friend from lapsing back into silence.
“Bet ya still deserved it.” He laughed out loud as he dished out some stew and rice for him and Miroku. Inuyasha was about to say something else but was interrupted by the demon slayer. It was as if speaking of her had summoned her and it made him almost fall over at the force she seemed to radiate upon shoving his curtain aside and storming in. “WHAT THE FUCK SANGO!”
She ignored her vulgar friend and tried to go after the monk. “Perverted Liar! You are just trying to get Kagome alone so you can take advantage of her! You’ve never mentioned special training before but all of a sudden naive Kagome- a beautiful girl- needs help and you JUST HAPPEN to know of some secret temple in the mountains that just YOU TWO can go to. BULLSHIT! I DON’T BELIEVE YOU MONK!” Inuyasha had caught the furious human female as she yelled at their friend and his eyes were wide. He had never seen her so riled up before and it was his turn to get angry because as soon as she was done screaming the last bit she hit him to try and get out of his grasp. “LET ME GO INUYASHA! DON’T YOU EVEN CARE THAT HE IS GOING TO TRY AND MAKE HER HAVE HIS CHILDREN!” He was hauling the screaming woman out as Kagome and Kaede came rushing to Miroku’s tent- apparently they had been trying to stop her too. But it took Inuyasha literally dumping her down into the shallow end of the river in the middle of the night for her scream of outrage to end her fit with a good dose of shock.
“Cool off!” The half demon barked at the now soaking wet, but still and silent woman. The water was up to her waist since she had sank to her knees in shock at the way Inuyasha had treated her; she was a demon slayer and yet a half demon had put her in her place. Everyone was shocked to say the least when he spoke “The monk aint lying! Ive seen proof that he has trained there and you damn well know that he hasn’t been being a pervert ass for damn well almost a year now! Kagome can handle him- hell she can handle Sesshomaru so she can handle anyone.” He walked away then, trying his hardest not to let his fears and anxieties from Sango’s words make him paranoid because he knew Kagome had to go or she would die and no fear was worth that outcome. His Kagome couldn’t die.. Not like Kikyo.
“I’m sorry.” Sango whispered to the retreating form of Miroku as Kaede helped her to her own hut, her shivering form trying to be as small as she could. Though she felt guilty, it wasn’t enough to push the slight panic at Miroku being alone with Kagome away. She just had a bad feeling about it, then again she always had a bad feeling about Miroku and any female; her father had always told her that her mother had a jealous mean streak and it appeared she did as well. A sigh left her lips and that was the last she was seen that night, she was too ashamed to show her face even though she could hear the light conversation being held outside her hut by Kaede and Inuyasha- who refused to apologize.
Kagome was still standing by the river. Not only had she brought the Shikon back, she had broken it, Naraku had half of it because of her, Kikyo was dead because she took the rest of her soul back, and now her group was fighting because of her. She didn’t want to cry anymore, but it still happened anyways. She just needed a break from it all. She wanted to go home- but instead found herself at Miroku’s hut. She slipped inside and sat down, dishing herself out some food since she hadn’t eaten at Kaede’s due to Sango’s outburst. She didn’t speak though as she gently nibbled her dinner and stared into the hot coals the stew had been sitting on.
Miroku didn’t know how to break the silence. She had never come into his hut before and it was making him nervous. He had to admit she was beautiful and stunning in so many ways and he had always failed to see a resemblance to Kikyo so he only saw her as Kagome. And Kagome was now a woman; her hair came down to her waist, her body was tone and lean like Sango’s but curvy as if she were made to have children, her skin had a perfect tan to it that looked like she was coated in a layer of golden honey and last but not least she had grown in height. She was now able to fit perfectly against him so that he could rest his chin on her head instead of his arm on it instead. He tried to push the thoughts away, still remembering the lingering feel of her pressed against him earlier in her panic. She had finished eating but still hadn’t spoken.
“Ask.” His voice broke the silence and she dropped her empty bowl due to being startled. He knew she wanted to know what Inuyasha meant by he had seen proof.
“How did you prove it to Inu? I would think he would have reacted like Sango instead he defended you…” she let her words trail off.
“I neutralized his demonic blood with a touch. Similar to what you do to the shards, but I isolated his demon blood with my energy and he was fully human as long as I touched him.” He paused then chose to elaborate, “You see. When I first told him this information a few days ago he began to react as our dear Sango did and grabbed a hold of me as she aimed to do. So I showed him that I was more powerful than any could feel and that it was all due to my training in the temples. I learned to completely hide the most powerful part of me and use it at will while never giving of so much as a hint that it is from me. I am hidden from detection. It makes me less of a target. And it will help you isolate the demonic taint hiding in your body so you quit attacking yourself.” He took a sip of tea that had been made before she arrived at his hut.
She nodded a bit at his explanation and then stood up. “Thank you. We will leave tomorrow if that is okay with you.” She left then, wiping tears from her eyes again. She was so tired and the day had been so long. Miroku was so calm, Inuyasha was acting weird, and Sango was not approachable yet. She felt alone and decided she simply wanted to sleep with her adopted son to forget her problems. It didn’t take long for Shippo’s warmth to wrap her in sleep either, their hut was closest to Kaede’s and the wonderful old Miko had made sure her little fox demon had gone to bed on time.
