The Next Day…
He has been curious, ever since the strangely humorous encounter with the enigmatic Miko of legend last night. There is an old legend that he recalls, but the details are quite fuzzy and any records that are supposedly kept in Reikai are gone. Koenma had been furious. Hiei seems to not care. He, however, finds it oddly coincidental that the information that can help them prepare is nowhere to be found. The timing of their disappearance also coincided with Kagome's request.
He wants to believe that it is a simple case of misplaced documentation, but deep down he knows that the records were removed from Reikai's archives. They have been removed for this very reason, perhaps. If he and Hiei are to go back with too much knowledge, then it will drastically alter whatever has already occurred historically. So in the end, Kurama supposed he is all right with the current lack of knowledge.
"About time you figured it out, Fox." Hiei's telepathic voice cuts in, though he isn't at all surprised. Kurama glances over to where he can sense Hiei, hiding amongst the foliage of a tree close to the Higurashi Shrine. "You should come up here and see this."
Kurama frowns and glances at the steps leading up to the Shrine. He had merely been passing by, in hope of catching a glimpse of the Miko they are supposed to be helping in three days. He can smell her, and he is certain that she has been through here hours ago. Is she still in school? The Kagome that had made the request hadn't mentioned anything about a school, nor had she been dressed to attend one.
"The Kagome we are to help is fifteen, Fox." Of course. Hiei will have already found that out. "You really should come up here. Now." There is a slight change in Hiei's tone of voice, and Kurama pegs it as irritation.
Kurama turns to go up the steps and smiles when he sees that, though there are a good number of steps to ascend, it is nothing like going to Genkai's. Thank Kami for small miracles. He ascends the steps, and by the time he reaches the top, it feels like he is strangely out of breath, as if he had just climbed up and down Genkai's steps twice. He looks at the steps he had just climbed and they look the same as before.
"It's because I have a barrier in place over the shrine," a soft and very familiar voice sounds from behind him. When did she get here?
Kurama turns back around, his attention no longer on the seemingly innocent steps, to the most hilarious sight ever. Kagome is standing in front of him, but what catches his attention first and foremost is very annoyed Hiei trapped in a transparent pink that is carefully balanced on her index finger. Oh boy.
"I don't see what's so funny, Fox," Hiei gripes, sounding every bit as annoyed as he looks.
Kurama covers his mouth in an attempt to keep himself from laughing, but a chuckle does slip out. He averts his gaze to Kagome and takes in the sweet smile she wears, and it fills him with worry. He smothers his laughter and clears his throat, feeling very much like a child that has gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar. "Konnichi wa, Higurashi-sama." He bows, very formally, and is quite surprised when Kagome laughs.
With a flick of her finger, Hiei is set down on the ground and released from the pink sphere of embarrassment. Hiei quickly darts away to a tree nearby, to save himself from further ridicule, leaving Kurama to fend for himself against Kagome, who is just full of surprises. "Konnichi wa, Yōko-sama." Her smile no longer makes him nervous, and he finds himself following after her as she turns and walks over to the tree Hiei had previously been in.
Kurama's eyes widen in shock, and then his expression quickly becomes one of amazement and awe, and now he understands why Hiei had ended up in Kagome's strange sphere. "Goshinboku…" His pace slows as nears one of the legendary Tree of Ages, and he has a sudden thought. "The well is made from the wood of this tree."
"Hai. Even back then the well was old." Kagome reaches out and touches Goshinboku lovingly. As she does so the very air around them hums and the sacred tree resonates. It is a beautiful thing, seeing such a rare experience for himself. "Hello again, old friend."
Kurama stills completely as the sudden feeling that he is intruding upon something very private takes over him. They shouldn't have come nosing around, looking for something that they aren't privy to. Alas, they have done so, and thankfully Kagome is here to prevent anything from going awry.
"Don't worry about today, Yōko-sama," Kagome murmurs as she lifts her hand from Goshinboku. She turns to him now and beams at him brilliantly.
Kurama blinks, and wonders at how she knows what he is thinking. Does she have some sort of telepathic ability? And why does she keep calling him Yōko? "Higurashi-sama?"
"Yes, Yōko-sama?"
And so formally too. "Pardon me for asking, but why do you keep calling me Yōko?"
"Ah…" She looks a little flustered for a moment, a pretty pink coloring her cheeks. "Gomen ne, Yōko-sama. When I look at you, I do not see your human body. I see your true body instead."
Her words are carefully chosen, but he does not doubt them at all. She is a very, very powerful Miko, despite her being a yōkai as well, and her current capabilities are unknown to them. All of what they had seen in Reikai is just a mere fraction of what she can do. "I don't mind it when in private, Higurashi-sama, and there is no need to be so formal."
Kagome continues to smile in that beautiful way of hers and she glances over to where Hiei is, in a tree that isn't a sacred Tree of Ages. "My nii-sama is very particular about certain things… I had etiquette quite literally beaten into me."
Well now. That certainly explains a lot, and he doesn't even know who her older brother is. He is nearly afraid to ask.
"I have a gift for you and Hiei-sama, Yōko-sama. It's a little early, but it won't hurt anything." Meaning it won't change anything that is to come.
Hiei, of course, does not budge from his current tree, and he is likely going to stay up there until he is good and ready to come down. Kurama smiles a little apologetically and steps closer to Kagome, curious as to what her gift will be. "A gift, Higurashi-sama?"
She nods and bids Kurama closer still, a small and secretive smile lighting up her face. Once he does so, she reaches up with her right hand and touches the center of his forehead with her index and middle fingers. Her left hand is placed over his heart and as she draws on her power everything goes white.
Sometime Later…
"Baka! You didn't tell me that this would happen!"
Kurama scrunches his face up slightly as his ear twitches atop his head in response to the sudden and very loud voice of a worried Miko. He opens his eyes and has to shut them again immediately, as it seems like the world has exploded in color. From the one brief glimpse, everything had been so much brighter and vivid that it hurt to look at. That is strange.
"He passed out!"
Now he frowns. Did he faint from whatever Kagome's gift had been? That is certainly unexpected, and likely to worry both Hiei and the kind Miko. "Did Hiei attack you, Higurashi-sama?" His voice sounds a bit off, but it is also very familiar and it sounds like the voice of his true body. That is puzzling. Kurama opens his eyes again, after mentally preparing himself for the onslaught of color, and finds himself staring up at a wonderfully done mural of the sky on the ceiling. Where is he?
"Yōko-sama! You're awake!"She pops into his line of sight, relief etched into her face now and a smile already spreading across her lips. Her lips give a very minute twitch before she is fully smiling and her gaze flicks towards something he can't see at the moment. "Hiei-sama is…preoccupied."
Kurama sits up and turns his gaze in the direction she had looked, only to be met with the extremely familiar and highly hilarious sight of Hiei floating in a pink sphere. Hiei looks pissed, and at the same time relieved, to once again he caught in a pink bubble that he has no way of escaping. Kurama is very certain that the relief is there only because he has woken up. "I'll say."
"I am sorry, Hiei-sama. I didn't know it would make him pass out, but I couldn't have you trying to kill me over that." Kagome waves her hand at Hiei and he is set down onto a highly polished wooden floor, the sphere disappearing from around him. The Miko looks over to a fox that Kurama hasn't noticed or sensed at all as she speaks, and glares at the creature as though this is all its fault.
Kurama recognizes the fox to be the nine-tailed silver male that Kagome seems to be mated to, if his guess is correct, which had appeared with the two other kitsune as she had left Koenma's office. The fox isn't paying her any mind, his amber gaze locked onto Kurama instead. Kurama blinks, both of his ears twitching now and successfully distracting him from the fox. What the…? He reaches up, vaguely noticing the familiar claws on his fingers, and feels the very distinct kitsune ears on top of his head.
"Yes, Fox. She sped up the process you would have undergone to attain your yōkai body." Hiei, wary of Kagome and her damnable pink spheres, takes to leaning against the wall on the opposite side of the room.
"I do need to give you your gift too, Hiei-sama," Kagome utters softly.
"Hn." Hiei doesn't budge at all.
Kurama looks from Kagome to Hiei, who is outright glaring at her as though she has severely offended him. "Hiei." Hiei stiffens then gives Kurama a sullen look before he fixes an indifferent expression onto his face and very slowly walks over to Kagome.
"You shouldn't pass out from this, Hiei-sama," Kagome reassures with a glance towards the nine-tailed kitsune watching over them. The fox nods, as if confirming something to his mate, and she beams happily. "Please hold out your right arm."
Both Hiei and Kurama stare at Kagome in shock, who merely returns their expressions with that same secretive smile she had given to Kurama before giving him his gift. When she gives him an expectant look Hiei hesitantly holds out his right arm. Whatever she is going to do, he doesn't trust it one bit. He knows his Darkness Flame is extremely dangerous, even to himself.
"Just relax." It's easier said than done. Kurama knows that Hiei won't be able to relax when it comes to his right arm and the cursed flame it bears. Surprisingly though, the nine-tailed fox gets up with a yip and approaches the two of them. Hiei is slightly startled when the fox nudges him, his eyes widening almost imperceptibly and then he smiles.
"Oh… I understand." It is the first Hiei has spoken aloud in Kagome's presence since the pink sphere incidents, and whatever has silently passed between Hiei and the fox leaves Kurama confused. Hiei relaxes and Kagome places her hands over the bandages wrapped around Hiei's arm.
This time, when she draws on her power, Kurama gets to witness some of what she had done to him, only this is different. Her power is speaking to the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, if this is an appropriate way to think of it, and the bandages covering the marking disintegrate from Hiei's arm. The eyes of the Dragon glow, briefly and brightly, and a look of wonderment is left on Hiei's face.
After several long moments a more drained, but still smiling, Kagome pulls her hands away and leans against the nine-tailed fox that has since moved to stand behind her for support. "Now, if you don't mind, I need to rest and recover." She yawns, her eyes drooping closed as she sways against the fox.
"I will show you the way out," a soft voice states firmly, causing both Hiei and Kurama to jump slightly and glance in the direction of the door. There stands a short and slender man with long red hair tied back into a thick ponytail. His eyes glint a piercing amber for a split second before settling on a vibrant purple. Their gazes, however, are drawn to the sheathed sword he carries at his hip, and the traditional style of clothing from the late 1800s he wears. "Kagome-dono needs her rest now, that she does."
Kurama feels as though he knows about this man, despite having never met him, and he can almost swear that he has stepped out of a history book of some sort. He brushes the feeling aside and gets up off of the bed to follow the mysterious swordsman out into the hall, Hiei not very far behind him. Hiei curiously glances at the nine-tailed fox as they leave the bedroom.
They navigate the halls in silence, and when they reach a large set of doors the swordsman pauses and looks at them, a contemplative expression on his face. "You should put a glamour up, Yōko-dono…" If he is going to say something else, Kurama isn't sure, and he isn't going to question how the swordsman knows him. The swordsman opens the door for them and ushers them through, out into the late evening.
They pause when the swordsman gives a soft, "Ah…" and they turn to look at him questioningly. "Curiosity is unbecoming if you, Hiei-dono." The swordsman smiles and shuts the door, his comment leaving them blinking and staring at the door.
After a moment Kurama chuckles and glances at Hiei, who looks rather put out. "He's right, you know." Curiosity truly doesn't suit Hiei when it lands him in floating pink spheres.
"Fox…"
