I've done away with this part, because Goku's characterization is almost the same as Vegeta's (Damn!), Goku fighting with Sesshoumaru almost the very second the meet comes off as gratuitous and unnecessary, it specifically implies that Sesshoumaru has a castle somewhere, a cliche that I'm going to avoid, and references to the Battletech universe for some reason. What was I thinking?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Battlefield 1542
Chapter III: Recruitment
Goku soared west above the black treetops as far as possible, but his energy finally gave out. Still recovering from the shock of the wing blade and his energy donation to its owner, he set himself down next to a stream with utmost care, but left a small crater in the ground anyway. He hobbled to the water's edge and peered into it, inspecting his new wound. Situated over his left eye was a six-inch long gash that ran from the center of his forehead to his left cheekbone. Accelerated saiyan healing had all but stopped the bleeding , but the injury was still tender and throbbed with immense pain. Goku ran his index finger over it; it was deep and it was wide, nearly an inch across at its widest point. Fortunately, he had his eyes closed when Hiraikotsu impacted, and his vision was spared from permanent damage. He was beginning to wonder if he would ever get a battle scar, as years of fighting Cell, Buu, and Freezer had left him unscathed. Now he knew.
After washing his hands of the black blood that covered them, the saiyan scooted up next to a nearby boulder, lay his head back, and closed his eyes. His new and peaceful life in Old Japan had not begun well. Defeating Li Shenron had given him the full power of the Dragonballs to command, but he still lingered around Earth. After Chi Chi, Gohan, Goten, and the rest of his friends had passed away, he no longer felt bound to his time. Because of that, he went far forward, watching Earth expand its reach to the stars, forming provinces that spanned thousands of light-years. Confident that petty national struggles were gone from the Earth and no more Freezers or Cells threatened existence itself, he settled down to live quietly on the flat steppes of Russia. Then, the Clans invaded the Inner Sphere, starting the largest conventional-weapon conflict in galactic history. Once again, Goku was pulled into the battle, leaving a trail of annihilated war machines that lead to the borders of Clan space itself. The 31st century was too busy and mechanized for Goku's tastes, so he went back, being careful to avoid the ever-decisive 20th. Eventually, he fell for the undeveloped charm of the 15th century and the isolationist Japan it contained.
The existence of these demons, however, came as a rude shock to Goku. No matter where or when he he went, there was always something or someone to pick a fight with. He gave up the search, deciding that it would be best not to fool with the space-time continuum that Bulma spoke so highly of. In resignation, the warrior used the power of the Dragonballs to strip himself of the power of the Dragonballs, regaining his mortality. Goku then resolved to live like a normal mortal being and die one last time before completely erasing his soul. Goku would do only what he wanted and he would leave the planet be.
So much for live and let die.
The demon slayer's plight in that section of forest reminded Goku that he would always be part of the Earth Defense Force and the obligation to help would follow him to the fringes of time and space. However, he had saved that woman and nearly killed her, both at the same time. He shuddered to think of what the remaining 75 years of his lifespan would bring. After an hour, a smooth, regal voice jarred Goku from his thoughts.
"What are you doing in my dominion, human?" Sesshoumaru asked.
Goku looked up to a rocky cliff at the far end of the stream. On it stood a silver-haired demon fitted with flowing white robes, mottled grey armor, and two katanas. Goku concluded that the demon sensed his ki from afar, and followed it to find him here. The saiyan did not want to get into another melee, so he answered without any contest in his voice.
"I am sorry, sir. I will leave your territory" he said.
This human had resigned with no struggle whatsoever. The lack of territorial zeal or xenophobia against his demon appearance had Sesshoumaru puzzled.
"You do not care that you are being commanded by a demon lord?"
"Race, gender, and affiliation are not vital to me. No, I do not care" Goku affirmed.
Sesshoumaru leapt down to Goku's level and looked him straight in the eyes. Goku shifted uncomfortably against the rock as the demon learned of his power.
"It is uncommon for normal humans to be devoid of the will to challenge. It is a crime altogether for a warrior of your caliber to be in such a state" Sesshoumaru explained.
"He knows" Goku thought, his mind in a scramble, "I may have to flee."
Sesshoumaru wrapped his right hand around the handle of his ordinary katana and unsheathed it. He pointed it at Goku's throat and spoke again.
"As a fellow warrior, it is my duty to relieve you of your worthless existence. Have at me!" the demon lord bellowed.
With no further delay, Sesshoumaru lunged at Goku with all of his demon speed and swung his sword with all his demon might, but the saiyan succeeded in evading the blade. Goku rolled to his left and watched in shock as the boulder he had been leaning against split clean in two, and the ground below fracture into hundreds of smaller chunks. He threw his attention back to the youkai swordsman; Sesshoumaru was at it again. The saiyan ducked and jumped, somersaulted and hand-sprung, but the demon did not relent, and his blade moved fast. Seeing an opening in Sesshoumaru's offense, Goku knelt low and swept his attacker off his feet with a jutting right leg. However, the youkai lord shifted his weight, dug a free hand into the ground, pressed hard, and kicked Goku in the head, knocking him down. Sesshoumaru stood and raised his sword over Goku. As the katana came down, Goku vaulted into a crouch and caught the blade between his right thumb and forefinger.
"I don't want to fight you!" he sneered.
The demon's reply was cold.
"That is precisely why you must die" Sesshoumaru said.
Goku may have been fast, but the recent forest battle gave Sesshoumaru the edge in strength, and now the saiyan was beginning to buckle under the blade of the katana. The demon lord reinforced his grip by pressing his left shoulder against the dull reverse edge of his sword, since everything below the elbow on that side was missing. Goku followed suit by clasping both hands on either side of the weapon.
Goku felt cornered. He had been able to get away with a weak Kai-o-ken with the snakes, but this lord would require far more aggressive measures. The saiyan knew he had three separate levels of Super Saiyan power to fall back upon, but even the first might be suicidal. Goku's short rest only gave him enough strength to safely perform some low-level, unpowered hand-to-hand combat, nothing near that fiery embodiment. Still, if that didn't kill him, the youkai would. There was no other way out.
"Your reptilian brethren tried to destroy me" Goku said, forging a confident smirk.
He burst into golden flame, his hair burning equally golden and his eyes flashing aqua.
"They failed."
Goku yanked the unnervingly-close sword to the side, and gave his assailant a hearty kick to the stomach.
"A-amazing......" Sesshoumaru choked, struggling for oxygen.
The youkai released his hold on his weapon, and Goku brought it over his knee, bending it perpendicular.
"Do you want a REAL fight?" asked Goku, a victorious grimace crossing his face.
He seized a handful of Sesshoumaru's silver hair, just above his brow, and spoke again.
"It is a fight that you will receive!"
Goku dropped the sword and drew his freed hand back, balling it tightly. His fiery fist then took flight at air-burning speed and collided with Sesshoumaru's jaw, hurtling him into the rocky cliff that he had appeared on.
Blood began streaming from the youkai's nose and he watched in fascination as Goku strode after him, glowing with unearthly power and newfound confidence. It startled the demon to see Goku vanish completely and reappear three feet from his face.
"Suffer."
Goku struck Sesshoumaru twenty-seven times more, reducing the regal figure to a regal pulp. The broken youkai howled in pain, his ribs cracking and blood vessels bursting. The cry wove its way through the woods, finally reaching Rin and Jaken, where they were fumbling about, trying to find their master.
The sound jarred Jaken and sickened Rin; they both knew who that scream belonged to.
"Sesshoumaru..." the girl breathed , changing her pace to a sprint. Jaken merely followed along, stunned that his lord could be damaged so.
Still not satisfied with the demon's pain, Goku seized his target by the ankle, and climbed into the sky.
Soon, Goku and Sesshoumaru hovered 500 feet above the earth. Goku began swinging the struggling form of his opponent back and forth, and when the inertia became strong enough, began swinging him around in full circles.
"If you love your land so much," Goku scowled, "then give.......it.......a.......HUG!!!!!!"
Goku broke his grip on Sesshoumaru's foot, and the demon speeded toward the ground. For the demon's sake, all his blood had pooled in his head, blinding him to the impending impact. With a land-shattering crash, the youkai body burrowed into the ground, kicking up a cloud of sticks, leaves, and debris. Goku landed himself in the new pit and looked closely at Sesshoumaru. He lay sprawled out on his stomach, with half of his face buried in the soil. Though he was not moving, he was definitely breathing. The belligerent bastard was still alive. The enraged saiyan picked up the youkai lord by the back of his neck, and brought him to limp kneel. He then wrapped his left arm around the demon's throat, placed his right hand behind his skull, and began to squeeze. Sesshoumaru's vertebrae began to contort and crack. It would be over soon.
Rin emerged from the forest, ran to the crater, and screamed in terror. There she saw her master, almost devoid of life and hanging from the crushing arms of some unknown, golden-haired enemy. His neck was about to snap. She suppressed a sob and cried out to Goku.
"No!! Don't kill him!"
"Rin, get back, come no closer" her guardian coughed, blood staining the front of his kimono. Even on the brink of death, Sesshoumaru was as calm and collected as ever.
Rin marched right up to Goku's left leg and seized a handful of the cloth there.
"You monster! Don't you dare hurt my Sesshoumaru! Let him go, or I'll, I'll.......or I'll......"
She broke down into screaming tears.
The sounds of the girl's heartache replaced Goku's battle-induced fury with his own heartache. That feeling of sorrow returned, still warm from the demon-slayer's near demise. The guilt-ridden soldier looked down into this Rin's eyes, and saw the sad little fox-boy that had broken his heart so. The saiyan could take no more. He released Sesshoumaru from his death-lock, and the pacified demon fell forward into the dirt. Goku could not sustain his Super Saiyan form without his anger, and he dropped out of it, stumbling backward and falling to the dirt as well. His tears finally broke free, and he sobbed with the combined sadness of failed defense and centuries without his family or anyone else at his side.
Sesshoumaru returned to the land of the living and looked upon the broken man before him, a far cry from the one that had nearly killed him. The demon lord spoke first.
"You.....you are the best fighter I have ever seen. What is your name?" he asked, regaining his breath.
"Goku. My name......is Goku" the saiyan replied, forcing his emotion to a minimum.
"Goku.... you have bested me in open battle and humored Rin here by sparing my life. I am in your debt" Sesshoumaru said.
Jaken hopped down into Sesshoumaru's crater, disbelieving what he had just heard. Not once in his numerous years of service to the youkai lord did Jaken ever observe such humility in him.
"Master, are you well? You have proclaimed your gratitude to a lowly human!" the toad gawked.
"Silence, Jaken. This man is no human, and he is the future commander of our territory guard" Sesshoumaru stated.
Goku's ears perked up.
"Okay, what?" Goku asked, unsure of the meaning of the demon's words.
"You, Goku, are to become the leader of the militia that protects my castle and the land surrounding it" explained Sesshoumaru.
The saiyan's annoyance grew and he stood up to display it.
"So, you try to cut my head off, and now you offer me a job. Tell me what, who the fuck are you supposed to be?" Goku growled, his anger resurfacing.
Rin helped Sesshoumaru stand, and Jaken cringed, expecting his master to attack Goku for speaking to him in such a manner. Nothing came of it.
"I am Sesshoumaru, Lord of the Western Lands. My attempt on your life was nothing more than a test of your strength" the inu youkai said, "and besides, you didn't really expect THAT to hurt YOU, did you?"
Goku followed Sesshoumaru's pointing finger and saw the right-angle that was once a katana. He tilted his head slightly to the left, gave in, and shook his head.
"However, I will admit that the execution of my test was perhaps.... not a stroke of tactical genius" Sesshoumaru continued, noting the blood splattered on the front of his robes.
"Fine. So you didn't really try to kill me. But you're a pretty tough target, and all I've seen around here are lesser-animal demons. They're nothing you can't handle. Why do you need me?" Goku asked, keenly awaiting an answer.
"Follow me" Sesshoumaru said.
Using Rin as a support for his weakened body, Inuyasha's brother led Goku to a cliff that overlooked a large part of his realm. The land was a vast expanse; a sea of black forest that stretched west for an eternity but was cut off to the east by a towering mountain range.
"This is only a fraction of my kingdom. The whole of it stretches the width of Hokkaido and a weeks travel north or south. I am indeed strong, but I am only one demon, and I cannot adequately defend an area of this size. Furthermore, up north lies a imaginary line that serves as the limit of my land, but it sits well short of the actual northern border. The villages closest to it are calling it the 'Soul Divide', because nothing that has set foot beyond it has come back alive. To my annoyance, this Soul Divide is encroaching further and further inward" Sesshoumaru explained.
"And you need me to give whatever's up there a wake-up call?"
"Precisely" the inu youkai confirmed, "If you can get the intruders to back down, even for a short while, it would give me time enough to shore up the lines and call in some outside help. As a bonus, it would boost morale, if the point defense forces knew their shadowy enemy was being pounded into grave dirt."
"What makes you think I would defend your land for you?"
"After what I observed you do to Sango's attackers," Sesshoumaru chuckled weakly, "I believe you would do it on your own anyway."
Goku turned his eyes away from the silver-haired demon and surveyed the vista before him. He could see several villages dotting the landscape. The demon lord was right. With so many innocent people around, the saiyan would not be able to simply turn away and let them die. This Sango was proof enough.
"I see that you have had much to deal with and would like to think about it alone. To that end, there is no better place to achieve solitude than my castle, and as Commander, you would be entitled to reside there. How about it?" Sesshoumaru asked.
"You've got yourself a soldier."
"Good."
Goku opened his mouth to ask the location of the castle, but made a yelp of pain instead, as Sesshoumaru, with secretly built-up speed, had drawn his second katana and jammed it firmly through Goku's heart.
"You.......opportunistic son-of-a-bitch...." Goku panted.
Gripping the sword, Goku pulled it from his chest and slashed right back at his double-crossing foe.
The youkai backpedaled a short distance, then stopped and laughed. Rin and Jaken were mortified, but quickly figured out what was happening and remained calm.
"Ah, good work, Goku. You have mended my wounds quite well. That is Tenseiga, the sword of healing, and we are both quite alive now."
Goku stared down at his chest. Indeed, a hole resulted in his gi from the stabbing, but he was not dead. Far from it. Goku felt all of his energy spring back to him and all of his wounds heal, except for the scar over his eye, to his disappointment. He looked down at the weapon in his hand and saw blue streaks of light fade into the air. A nervous yet sincere smile grew on the saiyan's face.
"So, you WEREN'T messing with me just now?"
"Of course not. I gather that you can fly with better speed now, correct?" Sesshoumaru inquired.
"Yeah, I suppose so."
"Outstanding. In that case, take Rin and Jaken here to my castle; they know the way. I shall join you later. Rin, find a room for the new commander. Jaken, appropriate a uniform befitting his rank."
Rin and Jaken answered in unison.
"Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru."
Goku tossed Tenseiga back to his new lord, then layed down on the ground, flat on his stomach.
"Okay, you two, hop on" he said, gesturing to his back.
Curiously, the girl and toad stepped onto Goku's back and sat down.
"Where is the castle?" the warrior asked.
Jaken pointed to the mountains off to the east.
"It lies just past that mountain range, Commander" the toad said.
Goku smiled at the thought of being referred to so, but set it aside and lifted into the air.
"Hold on tight!"
With a flash of Goku's ki, the group rocketed east in search of Sesshoumaru's castle. Satisfied that they were gone, Sesshoumaru let out a huff, releasing the emotions that he had forced himself to display a few moments ago. He sheathed the healing sword, turned his stare north, and pondered the future. The youkai lord had downplayed the state of the conflict to Goku. He had told the warrior of "intruders" and a "Soul Divide", but did not mention the one thing that concerned him the most.
Naraku.
