“That issss impossssible. Our venom issss untracccceable. He sssshould be a corpsssse.” Keiji hissed at the pacing wolf.
“If that’s true, then his beloved Miko has caught a sudden case of necrophilia.” Hiroshi spat. “What has caussssed ssssuch unresssst within you, friend? Sssseemssss to me that thissss issss an opportunity. You know the human’ssss expressssion, when the cat issss away, the micccce will play.” Keiji offered helpfully, ignoring his guest’s hostile tone. “It’s not that simple, you oaf. I need the Elders’ support first. They need to see my unwavering loyalty before I assume command. The pack needs their assurances to accept my reign. They will not turn their backs on Kouga so thoughtlessly.” Hiroshi replied, rubbing his temples with his claws. “Ah, yessss, the word of an outcasssst could be deemed unreliable. When do you plan to gain thissss ssssupport from your Elderssss? My men will not wait forever, Hirosssshi. They grow resssstlessss assss we sssspeak.” Keiji said casually, inspecting his black claws meticulously. Hiroshi stopped dead in his tracks and turned dangerous eyes on the snake perched in the wooden chair. The hidden implications behind his words sent Hiroshi’s blood into a fierce boil. “We had a deal, snake. They will wait until I give the order to proceed with our plan. This is a delicate matter. You need us as much as we will need you to conquer the four lands. This is not something that can be rushed.” He spoke sharply. “We have esssstablisssshed that, but the younger onessss have noticccced the Princccce’ssss abssssencccce. He hassss left your kin unprotected and quite vulnerable not only to our advanccccessss, but to any otherssss who take noticccce. You ssssay wait, but I ssssay we sssstrike now before your Alpha returnssss.” Keiji hissed venomously. “Your thoughts are dully noted, Keiji. It seems there will be no compromise with you today, so I will take my leave. I will return tomorrow with the Council’s decision. Do you and your young think you can wait that long before you decide to take it upon yourselves to invade my homeland?” Hiroshi said with a taunting smirk. “You play with fire, wolf, but I will allow you one day to reccccieve thissss all-important ansssswer. Conssssider it another gift from me to you.” Keiji replies with narrowed eyes. Hiroshi turned his back and walked toward the tunnel that led outside into the fresh air. His mind barely had the time to register the rustle of silk before his neck was encircled by a scaly, powerful hand. His stomach flipped at the stench of the snake’s breath penetrating his sensitive nose. “To make ssssomething perfectly clear, wolf. I grow assss impatient assss my men. If you do not comply with our wisssshessss after tomorrow, regardlessss of your Elderssss’ deccccissssion, I will make ssssure you ssssuffer for it. Perhapssss the female whossss ssssccccent issss tangled with your own will be more recccceptive.” Keiji growled close to his ear. Hiroshi took a greedy gulp of the putrid air around him when Keiji removed his bone crushing grip. He nodded once and rubbed his neck while he stormed from the snake leader’s chambers angrily. He didn’t enjoy being threatened and enjoyed even less the feel of the snake’s flesh against his, but he had to admit, Keiji had a point. Even though he didn’t fear Kouga, he was still wary of the wolf’s influence among the pack. Sure his current Alpha had committed a grievous act by mating the banished priestess, but the Council still may not rule in his favor. Hiroshi could not wait months on the four Elders to hash out their decision. In truth the odd were not in his favor. There were too many who supported Saburo as successor and virtually none who knew of his plans for ascension. He would see his lands burn before he would allow that prick to gain control of what was rightfully his. Hiroshi snarled hoarsely and slammed his fist into the tunnel wall. He groaned, immediately regretting his rash action as he pulled his fist free, leaving a string of something he was safer imagining didn’t exist attached to the slimy wall. He shook his hand to relieve himself of the muck and continued on his way.Saburo sat on the bank of the river at the base of the great falls. His curly hair lifted in the mild, summer night breeze while he launched pebbles into the churning water. He found himself in a very unusual predicament. His mind was in turmoil. The Elders had been less than receptive of his explanation for Kouga’s missing appearances in the den of late. He was almost positive that they had sensed his deception, but they said nothing to confirm it. They just scoffed and said that Kouga had been foolish to go off on such a dangerous exploration alone. Saburo being the ever loyal and dutiful Beta lied like a dog and said that he had supported his Alpha’s decision and would be meeting him periodically, being privy to the supposed nest’s location. They waved him off saying they expected reports upon his return from each rendezvous. Saburo tossed another pebble into the water and sulked. He hated lying, but he sure as hell couldn’t tell the truth. His Alpha’s poisoning would be enough to send the Elders into a tizzy, but the knowledge of where Kouga really was would be the undoing of them all. He momentarily questioned his decision to take Kouga to the little Miko, but tossed it aside with another stone. Kouga hadn’t come barreling into the lands yet, so apparently Kagome had been very persuasive. Saburo thought of many ways the little onna could have swayed his Alpha and his face broke out into a lecherous grin. The sexual tension between his two friends had been palpable during her stay at the den. He could only imagine what it was like for poor InuYasha now that they had been reunited after months of horrible separation. He didn’t see his little sister fighting her feelings for too much longer. When they arrived her appearance had shocked him. He had seen her broken and bloody on death’s doorstep, had been around to watch her feeble, malnourished body regain its strength, but never had he seen her so dejected and low. She had taken the separation from the pack extremely hard. Her eyes used to be so full of life and wonderment that they literally sparkled, but that little flame had been extinguished. Even her hair had been dull and lifeless, but when she came into contact with the ailing Prince, those chocolate browns of hers were set ablaze. He hoped for both their sakes that they had found some form of comfort in each other’s arms because they would be parted again all too soon. Maybe there was a way to keep them in contact with one another throughout their separation without anyone in the pack finding out. He would have to run the thought by Kouga when he returned. He shook his head at himself plotting to go against the Elders even further than he already had, but he valued his family more than some decree from those who had long since forgotten what it was like to be young and in love. They had not seen his two friends together, seen the way they moved in perfect sequence with each other, or the way their auras would exude such perfect peace and contentment when in the company of the other. To have Kouga and Kagome that way for as long as he could pull it off was worth any form of punishment the Council could dish out. Saburo was alerted to soft footsteps in the grass at his back. He listened to them pause and then return the way they came. He scented the air without turning around finding the retreating footfalls to belong to Hiroshi, the damned wolf that stood against Kagome during the hearing. What was he doing out of the den so late? Saburo listened intently as Hiroshi entered the woods and decided it would probably be in his best interest to follow the coward to see what he was up to. Whatever it was you could bet it would be something devious and more than likely had something to do with Kouga. He stood and brushed his pelt off before climbing the rocks to alert Ginta that he would be leaving the den. He found his pack brother sound asleep on watch as usual. It had been a miracle from the Kami above that he had managed to stay awake the night before to meet them in the woods when they took Kouga to Edo. He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes in exasperation. He poked Ginta in the forehead with one finger, but didn’t receive any reaction other than an exceptionally obnoxious snore. He kicked his friend’s foot, startling the wolf into a crouched defensive position, his breathing was heavy and his eyes darted to and fro, looking for danger. “Stand up, baka. It’s just me. I’m going to do a little reconnaissance, so you need to keep alert, got it?” Saburo barked. “Yeah, yeah, sure, Saburo. Whatever you say. Hey, uh, what’s going on?” Ginta asked rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and yawning. “Hopefully me just being paranoid, but stay awake just the same.” Saburo answered and jumped off the ledge to the ground below. He felt Hiroshi’s aura flare in the distance and started off into the trees, following Hiroshi’s scent. Something was off about the smell. He had bathed recently, that was blatantly obvious, but under it all there was something faintly unusual, something familiar. Saburo was unable to place it. Great, just what he needed, more mystery. Saburo sighed and took a more sidelong approach to the area he had sensed Hiroshi’s youki outburst from. It wasn’t long before the familiar stench of snake youkai hit his nose and human blood. He groaned and pushed his feet to move faster. He expected many things, a group of snakes feasting on the flesh of a local villager, Hiroshi trying to use his silver tongue to get the snakes to leave, possibly a fight, or even a half devoured Hiroshi. He did not expect the sight of his fellow pack mate helping the snakes to eat the dead little human girl. He sat there on his haunches tearing chunks away and stuffing his face with those reptiles like they were old buddies sharing a perfectly amicable meal. Saburo’s stomach twisted and the lead weight of rage encompassed his very being. He burst through the underbrush; fangs barred and charged the group at breakneck speeds. His claws found purchase against two snakes’ necks, ridding this world of their spirit as their heads rolled away from their bodies. He moved on to the next, but was knocked backwards by a broad shoulder slamming into his gut. He never got the chance to right himself before sharp claws sunk into his face and ripped through his left eye. He yelled in pain and brought his fist down on one of the thighs that straddled his waist. He heard a sickening crack and a roar before the snake rolled away to cradle his broken leg. Saburo stood, holding his damaged eye and surveyed his surroundings. Hiroshi and the last snake were nowhere to be seen. He snarled enraged by the traitor’s escape. His good eye focused on the green reptile writhing on the ground. Saburo walked cautiously toward him and squatted down, removing his hand from his aching socket. He gave the snake a swift punch to rouse his attention. “What the fuck was Hiroshi doing here with you?!” Saburo roared in the demon’s face. The snake sputtered blood as he laughed at the irate wolf. Saburo hit him again, only causing the reptile to laugh even harder. “Trust me when I say you will find nothing funny when you are missing a leg.” Saburo growled lowly, gripping the snake’s broken leg. The demon tensed and quit laughing, but a smile remained on his blood spattered, scaly lips. Saburo applied more pressure, hearing the bones pop, but still the smile remained. “Last chance, snake.” Saburo warned dangerously. “You think thissss meassssly pain issss enough to forcccce me into betraying my kin? Foolissssh wolf. We will ssssee you all dead!” the snake youkai snarled, his voice rising in volume with every defiant word spoken. Saburo had enough. He held true to his word and twisted his wrist, hearing the cracks and snaps of bone and sinew as he twisted the snake’s leg off from his knee cap. He had expected to hear screams of pain, but much to his surprise the snake remained silent, biting his lip with his eyes tightly screwed shut. At least that stupid smile was gone. Now, what to do? He needed answers and to heal before gallivanting through the forest at night in search of Hiroshi. The Elders would need to know of this little development immediately as well. Saburo shrugged once and clamped his hand around the reptile’s remaining leg, causing the snake to thrash helplessly in his iron grip. “Tsk, tsk. Didn’t we learn anything the first time?” Saburo admonished squeezing his hand tighter while dragging the demon behind him, leaving a smeared bloody trail, a twitching severed limb, a dead half-devoured human, and two headless snake demons in their wake.
Kagome woke up still draped across Kouga’s chest. She lay still for a moment, listening to the crickets chirping under the summer moon and reflecting on what had transpired just a few short hours before. She could still feel Kouga’s softened member inside her. She was more than a little sore from their vigorous love making. How could she have allowed this to happen? She kicked herself mentally repeatedly, not only because she had allowed him to defy his Elders’ orders probably knocking him to the bottom of the preverbal food chain in the pack, but because she had enjoyed the entire debauched process. She shivered at the thought of his racy words during their mating and the deep passion filled noises he made while driving her to the precipice of pure and unrestrained euphoria. No matter how bad she felt about her own actions, she couldn’t find it in herself to regret it or move for that matter. She loved the feel of his heated, hard body under hers, reveled in the feeling of his chest rising with each calm breath, the weight of his arms wrapped so securely around her waist, and the steady, rhythmic sound of his heart against her ear. She sighed. At least she had finally realized her true feelings toward her ookami Prince. She smiled at that. He was hers, her Prince, her love, her first, her last, her mate. She giggled in spite of herself and felt the arms encircling her tighten as his heart sped up signaling his return to the land of consciousness. He placed a gentle kiss on top of her head and smoothed a rough calloused palm up the expanse of her bare back, coming to rest at the nape of her neck, massaging it lazily. “Someone’s in a good mood.” He said sleepily and yawned. Kagome couldn’t help, but giggle harder, his deep voice rumbling in his chest tickled her ear. It didn’t help that his fingers on her neck were hitting another ticklish spot. Her snickers died in her throat when she felt him twitch and grow inside her. She sat up to extricate herself before anything else happened, but was stopped by Kouga’s strong hands holding her hips in place. He sat up and used his heels to push them backwards to rest his back against a tree, never releasing his hold on her. She grabbed his wrists originally planning to remove them, but when he shifted under her, she moaned instead. His chest rumbled in approval and his head dipped to nibble at her mating mark. The feeling of his fangs grazing the tender flesh sent shockwaves of unremitting desire coursing through her tiny frame. Gods he was sinful. No he was more godlike than anything. She was the one who had sinned. She sobered suddenly and stiffened under his assault. He noticed and pulled back, pinning her with questioning sapphire eyes. “What’s wrong, Kagome?” He asked, hurt lacing his voice, making her cringe at the inflection. “Kouga, we have to talk about this. What happened…it…I can’t believe…I’m so sorry.” She sputtered out without truly thinking it through. The hands on her hips became painfully tight, his claws dug into her skin almost pricking the delicate flesh. He lifted her none too gently and plopped her on the ground at his feet. She wrapped her arms around herself in protection against his icy glare. “Of course you are.” He snapped and rose to his feet, stomping off angrily in search of his discarded pelts. His tail twitched rapidly as he snatched his furs from the ground and hastily wrapped them around himself. He grabbed her Miko clothes and tossed them in her direction. “You might want to get dressed before you go home. Mutt face might not be too happy with you roaming around in your skin.” He said bitterly. She fingered the dry cloth before pulling it on. Kouga sat down noisily on the edge of the stream with his head propped on a fist, his shoulders slumped and a knee bouncing relentlessly. He pulled away from her when she placed a hesitant hand on his shoulder. “Kouga…” She started sadly. “I knew it was too good to be true. You said you loved me, that you wanted me. I placed my damn mark on you, Kagome! I guess it was just lust talking, huh?” He said sharply with a sneer. “Kouga…” She tried again. “What was it, huh? A pity fuck? You just gave your virginity up to the dejected ookami Prince who’s followed you around like a fool ‘cause you felt sorry for him.” Kouga snarled, cutting her off again. “Kouga, please…” “Please? PLEASE?! That word, that fucking word is what got you into this mess, Kagome. You sure you want to say that to me? I might make you regret something else.” His voice dripped with cruel sarcasm. “KOUGA!” She screamed, gaining his undivided attention and silencing him all at once. “Will you shut up for two seconds so I can explain myself? First of all, what happened wasn’t a pity anything. I truly do love you and I meant every word I said. And for your information, you arrogant ass, I don’t just hand out my, my…stuff…as a consolation prize. I cherish our bond more than words could say, but it’s a double edged sword. I’ve condemned you to Gods only know what kind of punishment. I should have stood strong, but…but I just couldn’t stop myself. It was all so…just…and you were…Look I’m sorry okay. I probably just ruined everything you’ve worked so hard for your entire life.” She started off strong, but ended her little speech in a whisper. Kouga’s face softened at her heartfelt explanation. It made him tingle on the inside to know that she finally reciprocated his feelings, but it was bittersweet. For the first time in all the years he had known her, he resented the way she emotionally martyred herself to save someone else the burden of consequence. It was ruining this moment between them. He cupped her downturned face firmly and lifted it to meet his. He brushed the thin trails of salty tears from her soft cheeks and placed light butterfly kisses across her brow. “I love you too, Kagome. I’m sorry I jumped to conclusions, I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I got to admit I’m surprised at you.” He watched as she raised a confused eyebrow before he continued. “If I didn’t want this to happen, it wouldn’t have. Regardless what happens, I’m happy you accepted my claim finally; in my mind that’s all that matters.” He stated with finality. “But don’t you care what will happen to you when you return home? I’m not worth you losing everything.” She asked worriedly. “On the contrary, my lovely mate, you are worth that and so much more.” He replied in hushed tones. He claimed her lips and his chest rumbled in pleasure as she returned his attentions. He pulled her close and wrapped her protectively in his capable arms, deepening their kiss, stroking her tongue with his. She sighed sweetly when he pulled away and nuzzled her hair. “My woman.” He said possessively. “Uh, Kouga?” She said timidly. “Yes, love?” He replied, enjoying the feeling of holding his beloved. “I’m hungry.” She whispered in perfect timing with her stomach rumbling its agreement. He laughed and squeezed her tightly. ‘Still so innocent.’ She was a breath of fresh air and he was the luckiest wolf alive. No matter what his future held, he knew his rightful place in this world. It was right here with this beautiful, enchanting human woman. He kissed her temple before grabbing her hands and pulling her to her feet. “Come on, love. Let’s go back to the hut and see if we can’t scrounge up something for you to eat. You have expended quite a bit of energy.” He said teasingly. Kagome blushed and swatted his chest playfully before entwining their fingers together. Kouga chuckled and led them back to the village.
