Chapter 204 - The Family
*But I'm Worried* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
"So," Kagome started, kneeling down in front of the children. "What do you think? Do you like them?"
Rin nodded emphatically while Shippo gave her a look that made her heart ache.
"Mama, why do I need a nanny? Won't you be taking care of my anymore?"
The ache in her heart doubled, and Kagome sighed. She should have explained things to him before now, but she hadn't thought about it.
"No, honey, of course I will. The nanny isn't here to replace me, she’s to help me."
"But you've been fine all this time," he whined. "Why do you need help now?"
"Well, the most important reason is Naraku. We're going to the final battle soon, and I need to know that you'll be safe and taken care of."
"I'm not going with you?" the kit asked in shock.
"No, honey. Really, you shouldn't have ever been involved in the first place, but I didn't have a choice. I had to keep you with me, even when we went dangerous places, fighting bad people. Now I have a different option. I can leave you here where I know you'll be safe, and you won't be in constant danger."
"But I want to go! What if you need me?" Shippo was terrified that his mother would leave to fight Naraku and not return. Just as she took care of him, he felt it was his job to protect her. How many times had he done so? How many times had he held off an attacker long enough for Inuyasha to make it to them? What would happen if he weren’t there to do so? She might be killed, all because she wanted to keep him safe. He wasn't a child! He was a kitsune who had proven he could handle himself when needed, and she might need him!
"Sweetie, Sesshoumaru is with us now, and Inuyasha, Sango, and Miroku will be there, too. I'll be fine. I'll be able to fight better if I don't have to worry about where you are or if you are safe. I know you don't like it, but it's what's going to happen. When we find out where he is, we're leaving, and you and Rin are staying. It shouldn't be too hard. He'll be hibernating. We'll catch him off guard, and take him down once and for all.
"Shippo, you have to understand, I never wanted you exposed to any of this. I've been a terrible mother, dragging you into danger over and over again. I can't keep doing that. You need to be protected. So, do you think they can be the ones to do it? Did you like them?" Kagome was hoping to redirect his focus from his desire to fight to his opinion on the nannies, but he wasn't quite ready for that yet.

"You said the most important reason. What are the other ones?" he asked her, his green eyes still sparking with worries.
The miko sighed softly. He was not going to make this easy on her. "Well, I'm the Lady of the West now. You are a huge part of my life, but you're not my only responsibility. I have things that need to be done, so I can't sit and play with you all day every day. Having a nanny doesn't mean you'll never see me again, it just means someone else will be spending time with you, too. I'll still give you your bath and put you to bed most of the time. I'll still be around to play with you. I just can't do it all the time. The nannies aren't going to replace me. They'll only be helping me."
"And?" the kit pushed, knowing there was more.
"And sometimes I'm going to want to be alone with Sesshoumaru. Sometimes we'll go away for a few days. I love you Shippo, and you, too, Rin, but I love him, too, and we'll need time together."
While the kit frowned, he understood. Kagome was young, too young to really be a mother in her time, and yet she had taken him in and raised him like her own. She sacrificed some of her freedom to be responsible for his care. Now she found the love of her life, and she deserved time with him. So long as she promised not to abandon them, or to leave them to be raised by nannies, he would be okay with this.
Shippo still wasn't happy about the Naraku part, but he understood that as well. He usually wasn't much help. He was more of a burden, someone else they had to protect. He had gotten in the way more times than he could count, and she was right. It would be better if he weren’t there. Sesshoumaru would protect her with his very life. She would definitely be coming back to him when the battle was done.
"Now," Kagome said, "I know you like that they're kitsune so they can teach you more about magic. What about everything else? Were they nice? Were they fun? Do you trust them?"
Shippo nodded. "They were great. Much better than yesterday's bunch."
The miko laughed, and Shippo finally relaxed. He hopped onto her shoulder and wrapped his little arms around her neck in a warm hug. "Promise me you won't leave me?"
"I promise I will never leave you, Shippo. You're my son." Noticing Rin appeared as if she felt she were intruding, she pulled the little girl into her arms. "I'll never leave either of you. We're a family."
