chapter 21:
_______________________
It wasn't too late. Hojo glanced up from the book he was reading to
look at the clock on the wall. It would be time for
the evening meal soon. He had left Kagome at her room a while ago, thinking
she needed to rest. The longer he laid on the bed, waiting, the more
restless he became to see her again. He didn't like that half demon
being in the same room as her. It just didn't seem right. Even though
he had no right to tell Kagome what to do, he stil had a right, as a boyfriend
to voice his concerns over a dangerous matter that might do her harm.
Hojo sighed. No. Kagome was training to be a full Miko. From now on,
she would be facing many dangers that no mere mortal could cope with.
Her inner strength made her more powerful than he when it came to youkai.
She could cope with the hanyou but....
...he still didn't like it.
The white haired half demon was a male after all.
No. He didn't like it.

Hearing a tap, Kagome got up from the bed and answered the door to see
Hojo. "Oh, Hey Hojo. Did you need something?"
"It will be time to eat soon. Do you want to go outside for a while
before dinner? The sun is setting. We could watch the sun meet the horizon."
The idea was not a bad one. She glanced at the sleeping hanyou on
the floor. He was out cold. He probably wouldn't have any of the other
side effects. She smiled at Hojo. "It sounds like a good idea to me."

They strolled hand in hand in the garden as the setting sun cast
dark yellow and tan shadows throughout the flowers and leaves.
Thinking of Inuyasha, Kagome barely noticed how tight Hojo was holding her
fingers. Hojo pulled her down to sit on a stone bench under a great oak
near the fence. "Kagome?"
She caught the serious look in his eyes. "Yes?"
"We've been boyfriend and girlfriend for a long time. Right?" He
asked while gently squeezing her hands in his.
"Yeah, about two years now."
He began rubbing her palms with his fingers while keeping her gaze locked
to his. "I think we should take our relationship to the next level."
Kagome almost let her jaw drop as she raised a brow. "Huh. What do you
mean?" She heard some stranger in her head say.
The young man glanced away for a second before fixing the serious gaze
back to her. He took hold of her arms, leaned forward, then pressed his
lips to hers.
It happened so fast that Kagome was taken off guard. Her eyes widened in
shock before she pushed him away. Cheeks hot, she sputtered. "Hojo. Uh.
give a girl some warning first. Okay."
He didn't seem to notice how irritated she was as he wrapped his
arms around her in a tight hug. "Oh, Kagome. We're going to be so happy."
She couldn't believe how clueless Hojo was. Could he not see that
she was ticked off? Or did he even notice how she felt at all? "Happy?"
She muffled into his dark blue shirt.
"Yes. Happy." He said while lightly petting her hair in long strokes.
"Just you and me and then later....lots of children."
Stunned for only a moment, Kagome jerked back out of his hold. "Don't
you think this is a little rushed? Children? I..I'm only sixteen and..
..I've hardly begun my training to be a miko. Wait...." She paused, realizing.
"Are you...proposing to me?"
He smiled brightly. "We'll have a big house with lots of room. One out
in the country where all our kids can play and we'll have a garden, and pets,
and fruit trees, and lots of herbs and flowers. It will be beautiful, Kagome."
Kagome was floored. "I think we need to discuss this. You're thinking maybe
a few years from now. Right? You're not thinking of right now. Are you?"
"Of course right now, silly." Hojo laughed. "As I said: We need to take
our relationship to the next level: marriage. Joined forever. You and me."
Her mind swirled. She needed to finish school. She didn't want to get
married now. She had too many things to do. And...she didn't want to get
married to...Hojo.
For the first time, Kagome realized she didn't love Hojo. "No. I don't
want to get married." She declared in the most assertive voice she
could muster.
His face fell in astonishment. "But..but..but..Kagome. I thought we
were happy together. I thought you wanted to be with me forever. Don't
you love me?"
She stood up from the bench and turned from him. "Hojo...I....I have to
be honest with you. I don't think I love you that deeply....enough to marry
you, that is."
"You can't mean that." Hojo croaked. "You...You don't love me?"
It was time. Kagome knew. "No. I don't love you."
Strong arms wrapped around her from behind. Kagome inwardly jerked but
didn't try to force him away.
He breathed hotly against her ear.
"Kagome. Please. You can't mean what you're saying." His breath was warmly wet
on her skin and the icky feeling made her entire body tense up.
So many times in the past she had dreamed of him kissing her and breathing
in her ear but...something had changed and now she didn't like it and she
didn't want him touching her.
"Yes. I do mean it. Hojo. I don't love you and I don't want to marry you.
Now let me go." She accidentally growled the last few words in rising anger.
The arms fell, breaking the hold. She began walking away from
him, way too mad to turn and talk to him in a civilized manner.
===============================================
Hojo watched the love of his life walk away from him. In only seconds
he went from being extremely happy to.... His stomach hurt and his eyes
burned with tears that he would not let fall. Kagome was his first girlfriend.
He thought of her all the time. He had made so many plans for their future.
All this time, he had believed that they were going to be together...forever.
Now.
Now.
She was dumping him, leaving him, walking away from their future together.
He frowned at the beautiful girl entering the house. She was supposed to
have been his...always.
Sitting on the bench, he brooded, his mind searching for answers as
to why his girlfriend, almost wife, had deserted him. He wracked his
brain until he had a notion: That half demon in her room must be the
reason. That evil hanyou had put some sort of spell on his beloved Kagome.
The monster had turned his love against him.
He glared up at the window that was Kagome's room.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Kagome greeted Ayame who was cleaning the kitchen counter. "Hey, Ayami."
She quickly fixed some sandwiches and grabbed a bag of chips along with
some canned drinks before heading back to her room.
"I won't eat in the dining room tonight. Me and
Inuyasha are going to eat in my room." She told the wolf demon while walking
out the kitchen door.

Kagome smiled at the sleeping hanyou on the bedroom floor as she sat down on the
bed while munching on a sandwich. He looked so peaceful. She wished he
would wake but knew he needed to sleep that toxin off. Hopefully, he would
be his old self in the morning. Just in case he woke in the night, Kagome
put his food on her night table.
Feeling tired, she laid down. Purposely pushing all
thought of Hojo from her mind, Kagome quickly fell asleep.
