Misfortune Followed Us Home ch.21
All she could do was watch him. His eyes bore into her and she shuddered. She watched as his gaze drug over her form. Watched as a predatory look filled his eyes. Watched as he slowly stood to his feet.
“What am I doing,” Kagome thought as she sat transfixed by the predatory hunger Sesshoumaru exuded. Some hidden or suppressed instinct blossomed to life and she grasped at the stone beneath her. She pushed off on her palms and chose “flight”. Around the corner she flew, she looked behind her to see Sesshoumaru still striding slowly in her direction. Their eyes met and he grinned. She continued to run her heart beating heavily, past the strange fungi, stumbling down the path and over foot high mushrooms. Her breath was coming in pants now and it was becoming harder to see. The sound of rushing water drew her attention, she couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from, even the sound of her heavy breathing echoed off the walls.
“Miko.” The voice came from everywhere at once, rough and guttural but just the sound of it set off a riot of different reactions in her body. “I tire of this game young one. The other is resisting and you have to be mine before I am banished again.”
“What the hell? What is he talking about,” she thought.
“Kagome.”
She shivered at the sound of her name coming from his lips. Quaked from the warm feeling coursing up her spine. Some part of her, a part she never knew existed, reveled in the feeling of being prey. Still she feared the consequences, so she hurried off into the darkness, trying to find the source of the water and hopefully follow it out the cave.
After five minutes had passed, Kagome finally stumbled into a vaulted chamber with a lake fed from a small river. Moonlight drifted from a hole in the ceiling much too high to reach. The walls were cold and damp, in some places covered with moss. The river drifted down one of five tunnels in the room. She followed the river back but the source led to a hole in a wall too small for her to crawl through. Dismayed she returned to the lake to look for another way out. With one exit already eliminated, Kagome picked a tunnel at random. But no matter which way she turned, which path she took, she constantly returned to the same chamber over again. Exasperated with her confusion and having long ago forgotten about Sesshoumaru, Kagome sat at the edge of the lake dangling her feet in the water.
“How long have I been lost,” she asked herself. Frustrated she slapped at the water causing ripples to form and crest on the water.
“Kagome.”
She jumped at the sound of his voice. Turning suddenly she lost her balance and fell in the water. She was lost immediately in a sea of darkness. “Which way was up,” she asked herself as she frantically clawed at the water. She suddenly realized how quiet it was here. No yelling, no screaming, no crying. She only had to look after herself. She looked around her as if she was seeing the world for the first time. Her struggles ceased, she closed her eyes and she merely floated in the silence.
She gasped as she was torn from the water. She immediately began coughing. Water coursed from her mouth as she lay panting on the floor. She pushed her sopping wet bangs from her face and tried to sit up. Clawed hands grasped her shoulders and hauled her into a seated position.
“That was foolish,” he stated.
“I know,” she replied.
“Can I not trust you to take care of yourself.”
“Look you just surprised me. If you hadn’t been chasing me none of this,” she stopped mid-sentence as she stared into his face, his eyes a vivid red. She had forgotten why she had been running. That feeling of being prey returned. As her body responded to his, she noticed as his eyes filled with a hunger she knew of but had never experienced. She shuddered as his claws scraped across her neck, the sharp points barely caressing her skin. He grasped her hair pulling it away from her slender neck and she gasped as he tugged her hair, tilting her head up. His crimson grazed searched her own for a few seconds before he sunk his fangs into her tender flesh where her neck met her shoulder.
