Hiroshi flew across the snake leader’s chambers and hit the wall with a loud slap. He gagged when his impact caused the slime to disperse from the wall and land with sickening plops on his head when he slid to a stop on the floor.
“How could you have allowed thissss to happen?!” Keiji roared. Hiroshi battled his churning stomach and rubbed his bruised jaw with a grimace. He looked up at the snake leader with distain. “How the fuck was I supposed to know Saburo would take interest in me all of a sudden?” Hiroshi replied angrily. Keiji snarled and lunged for the crouched wolf, grabbing him by the neck and lifting him with ease until his feet dangled a foot above the cave floor. Hiroshi grasped the snake’s scaly wrist and kicked his legs desperately trying to loosen the vice grip. “You ignorant mutt! You’ve left a ssssccccent trail that leadssss right to thissss nesssst! I don’t care any longer what your planssss are! We make our move tonight!” Keiji yelled spewing spittle onto Hiroshi’s cringing face. Keiji dropped a sputtering and wheezing Hiroshi unceremoniously on the ground at his clawed feet. He turned his back to the wolf and walked to the entrance of his lair, motioning his hand, summoning someone unseen from the tunnel. “Jusssst to make ssssure you don’t deccccide to back out of thissss new arrangement, you are going to retrieve your little female and bring her to me.” Keiji hissed, his voice filled with false pleasantries. Just then three abnormally large snake youkai entered the room. They bowed low to Keiji and turned their dry lips up in disgust at Hiroshi once he stood, rubbing his abused neck. “You three will accompany our dear friend Hirosssshi. Make ssssure he extendssss the ssssinccccerity of our invitation to hissss intended.” Kenji continued. They nodded in unison and turned to face Hiroshi who walked toward them sneering. “I don’t need any damn babysitters. So you can take your brutes and stuff them, Keiji.” Hiroshi snarled. His remark was met with a quick punch to the side of the head. Hiroshi looked up from his familiar position on the floor stunned. Keiji was returning his arm to his side, his tongue flickered out furiously. “Nonssssensssse, whelp. You will do assss I command. Now if there are no further questionssss or conccccernssss it issss time to be on your way.” Keiji said in a strained, clipped tone. The three demons walked to the exit and waited with crossed arms for Hiroshi to lug himself up off the floor and follow them. Keiji returned to perch in his chair while they departed. “Oh, jusssst one more thing, if our dear guesssst deccccidessss to betray ussss in anyway, leave hissss rotting corpsssse for the wormssss.” Keiji added with an evil smile. The three demons ahead of Hiroshi hissed their acknowledgement and continued forward. Hiroshi shivered in fear at the predicament he had gotten himself into. Maybe Ayame’s presence would be enough of a distraction to allow him a means of escape, but even if that was so, he had nowhere to run. Hiroshi sighed in defeat. He had no other choice but to comply with Keiji’s wishes. He focused his thoughts on something more productive. How was he going to convince that self-righteous Ayame to go along with the snake youkai’s plan? That female practically bled pack pride. It may be possible to convince her that her own grandfather betrayed her by not believing what she saw. He doubted that she would believe the Elders would see him this late, but it was all he could think of on such short notice. If she didn’t come with them, Hiroshi dreaded what the overgrown beasts in front of him would do, mainly to himself. Ayame was capable enough. She could take care of herself, if not; well it wasn’t like he actually loved her or anything. She was beautiful, conniving, and convenient, but replaceable. Gods, what a mess!Saburo cracked his knuckles in preparation for the fun yet to come. His captive lay in a pool of his own blood on the stone floor below the Elders’ dais. Saburo had put a saber in the fire to heat. He planned to use it to cauterize the wound. It wouldn’t do for his new playmate to bleed out during the interrogation process. He was just waiting on the go ahead from the Elders. “You are certain Hiroshi was with the snakes and not being held against his will?” Elder Yorozohu asked skeptically. “He was dining with them for Kami sake, so yes I’m sure he was there of his own free will.” Saburo replied for the fourth time, slightly annoyed. “For what purpose did you bring this thing here, Saburo?” Elder Matsusuke asked waving an elegant clawed hand at the bleeding snake youkai. “For proof and other information. That is if I can get him to talk. He was one of the snakes with Hiroshi.” Saburo explained with a smirk. “I see. It will be most interesting to find out what he knows. With your exceptional talent in the art of… persuasion, Saburo, I’m sure it will not take long.” Matsusuke replied with a smirk of his own. “Forgive me, but I fear that I do not wish to engage in such gruesome activities this late in the night. I wish you the best of luck, Saburo.” Elder Tsunenaga stated with a bow and left the judgment chambers. “I share my brother’s feelings on this particular matter. I bid you all good night.” Yorozohu said with a bow of his own, retreating from the chamber behind Tsunenaga. “Shall I begin or will you be leaving as well, Elder Kamatari?” Saburo asked with a hint of amusement. Elder Kamatari just scoffed and rolled his eyes, waiving a hand for Saburo to proceed. Saburo walked to the side area and pulled a wooden chair from the guards’ table into the center of the room. The two remaining Elders on the dais had produced chairs of their own and sat on the edge silently immersed in the scene playing out below. It took Saburo no time to secure the barely conscious snake youkai upright in the chair. His head lolled to the side; bloody spittle sliding across his split lips, eyes at half-mast. He never acknowledged the jostling movements of Saburo tying his wrists together behind his back and securing them to the frame of the chair. After Saburo secured his only leg, he stepped back with a thoughtful thumb resting on his chin appraising his handiwork. He silently voiced his approval with a nod and grasped the hilt of the saber, leaving it embedded in the fiery embers. “It is time to awaken, snake.” He said quietly, seemingly mesmerized by the flames licking the reddish orange glowing metal. He said nothing else, made no further attempt to rouse the captive demon. Quicker than the normal eye could see, Saburo was standing before the now screaming snake with the scorching blade pressed firmly to the tattered stump of his leg. The stench of burning flesh filled the chambers, but Saburo paid no heed, just stood there holding the blade steadily, watching the snake writhe and scream in pain. He removed the blade slowly, not wanting to rip open the newly sealed skin and flung it sloppily back into the flames, across the room. The snake’s chest heaved and his eyes remained wide as saucers as he stared in horror at his blackened, smoking stump. He coughed a few times, flinging, bloody foamed slobber into the air in front of him. “Y-you think that will make me talk? You know nothing of the brotherhood that lurks beneath your precious lands, wolf! I will not break!” The demon sputtered, forcing a malevolent smile. Saburo shrugged his shoulders once and dropped to his knees mere inches in front of the demon’s seated form. He cocked his head in a way that exposed his gapping, empty eye socket to the flickering light and prodded it gently with a clawed fingertip. “It seems that we have something in common.” He stated matter of factly, pushing one claw into his grizzly wound, causing a new fissure of blood to erupt from the scabbed surface. Saburo smirked at the look of confused bafflement that crossed the snake demon’s face. He, however, remained completely unfazed by the self-inflicted wound. “We both are loyal to our own kind and would endure any pain to protect our kin, but I wonder, how much pain are you willing to suffer in the name of loyalty to your band of cowards?” He continued contemplatively. The demon snarled and spat into the wolf Beta’s face. “I will never break, you fucking pathetic excuse of a demon!” He roared as Saburo casually wiped the fluid from his face. “We shall see.” He replied calmly before slamming his claws into the thigh of the snake’s intact leg and dragging them down to the kneecap, very slowly, penetrating the hardened hide to the bone. The snake muffled a yelp by biting his lip. His fangs pierced the skin there causing angry red streaks to trail down his chin and pool into his lap. Saburo sneered at the restrained reaction and brought his claws to rest deep within his flesh, just under the bone of his kneecap. “You do not scream. Is it because you fear your ever loyal brothers will hear your weakness or is it because they will not be coming for you?” Saburo growled. There was no reply, just the plops from the blood that poured from the gashes on the snake’s leg. Saburo shrugged again and pulled his hand toward himself swiftly. There was a crack and the sound of wet flesh tearing as he ripped the demon’s kneecap free. The snake roared in agony, but never responded to the question. Not that Saburo really cared at the moment. The snake would talk, all belly draggers did in the end.
“Hiroshi, what’s going on?” Ayame asked warily. She had cleaned herself up and had settled down for the night to sleep. She had been awoken by the sound of several heavy footsteps making their way to her cave. She had been quite surprised to find that Hiroshi had returned so soon and more than a little taken aback by the fact that he was accompanied by three overly large snake youkais. “Ayame, you must come with us. There has been a sudden change of plans.” Hiroshi said calmly, that false smile firmly in place. “What do you mean sudden change of plans?” She asked, taking a few steps back. Her eyes darted from each snake and back to Hiroshi, whose dark eyes held something that she could not discern. She was getting more nervous by the minute. It didn’t help that his face was badly bruised, something that hadn’t been there before. She had consented to his wishes earlier, had allowed him to touch her, and had agreed to serve him, but that didn’t mean she was going to do so mindlessly. “Don’t be nervous, my lovely. Keiji, the leader of the snake demon clan wishes to meet the future Alpha female of our pack.” Hiroshi said, smoothly, taking a few slow steps toward her. “Really? What happened to your face?” Ayame asked unbelieving. Hiroshi stopped. His smile faded into a frown. He lowered his head slightly and shook it, his shoulders drooping, making her wonder silently what caused such a change in her new Alpha. “I wish I didn’t have to explain, but seeing that you are so untrusting…I do not wish to cause you undue pain, my lovely. Are you sure you want to know?” Hiroshi said softly. Ayame’s guard melted slightly at his heartfelt words. She didn’t wish to upset him and it seemed that whatever the reason for this strange meeting was doing just that. She closed the gap between them and placed her hand on his chest. “Yes, Hiroshi, I need to know. If it has come to meeting the leader of the Snake Youkai clan, then…I just need to understand.” She said quietly. Hiroshi covered her hand and gave it a light squeeze. He never raised his head when he spoke, his voice apologetic and hushed. “I was able to see your grandfather tonight. I told him everything about Kouga, hoping he would see that your actions were justified, but he would hear none of it. He refused to believe me, to believe you.” Hiroshi explained. Ayame felt her heart twist painfully so and her body began to tremble. Could it be? Could her grandfather have disregarded her claim so harshly? He was strict and rigid when it came to their laws and what Hiroshi said made an unfortunate amount of sense. How could an Elder take the word of a betrayer and outcast so trustingly, blood or not? He couldn’t. Ayame felt the hot trails of tears against her cheeks and she fought them with all her might. She was to be the Alpha female of their new leader. She couldn’t show such weaknesses. She took calming breathes and focused on the one other thing that remained unanswered. “You still haven’t explained what happened to your face.” Ayame said while wiping her tears away stubbornly. “That is something I’m most embarrassed about. When your grandfather refused to believe your word, I…well I made a spectacle of myself and Saburo removed me from the Council chambers, rather forcefully, I might add.” He replied, looking sheepish for good measure. He could see her defenses crumbling and all it was going to take was a few well-placed words or gestures and she would follow him into hell and back. Hiroshi smiled at her and brought his hand up to caress her cheek, meeting her turquoise eyes. “I can’t bear anyone insulting my future mate. I will be Alpha with the help of Keiji and his clan and we will show everyone the error of their foolish actions. Come with me, my lovely. Keiji is not one to be kept waiting.” Hiroshi said with a sly smile and a light peck on her lips. Ayame felt her heart soar at his small speech. The words he spoke had her light headed and giddy. So, he really did care about her. She nodded her head dumbly and took his offered hand. She allowed Hiroshi to lead her out into the night and to the Snake Clan leader, to their fate and future.
“It doesn’t have to be this way, you know. All you have to do is give me what I want to know and the pain will end.” Saburo offered with a shake of his head, clearly disappointed that the bound demon hadn’t confessed to the traitorous plots Hiroshi had no doubt assisted in. The bleeding snake demon glared at the one eyed wolf with distain. His lip curled and his forked tongue flickered out from between his broken teeth and bloodied, swollen lips. “Death first.” The snake wheezed through ragged breaths. Saburo rolled his remaining eye and shrugged nonchalantly. “Suit yourself, but death will not come to you as swift as you wish.” He said, inspecting his gore covered claws, meticulously removing the grime from under them. He smile at his scowling prisoner and walked to the fire to retrieve the molten hot saber. Saburo twisted it in his palm playfully while he returned to the snake. He pressed the blade to the gaping wound in the snake’s knee. The sizzling of flesh was evident as well as the howl of pain from the reptile. “Do you still believe they will come for you?” Saburo asked with a dark chuckle. “Why not just tell me what plans are in motion, hm?” The snake’s eyes leaked tears of anguish and rage and Saburo couldn’t help, but run the very tip of the blade along the salty trails, burning and removing the hardened hide of the snake’s face. Just then they felt a tremor in the earth below their feet. Saburo shot upright, his knuckles strained white from the tightened grip on the sword hilt. The sounds of screaming flowed through the chamber. The snake laughed heartily and just before Saburo made his exit he ripped his claws through the reptile’s neck, silencing the menacing, mangled bastard for all eternity. Natsuki watched from the cliffs above as the snake demon’s clawed their way through the dirt and dragged their filthy bodies out of their holes. Gods there were so many. She saw her kin being slaughtered, ripped mercilessly to shreds by the fowl beasts. Tears streamed down her face. She heard the screams of mothers whose cubs were taken from them, the shouts and pleas of loved ones begging for the lives of their beloved kin. She wanted to help, had to, but her body refused her commands to move. She pressed herself further into the dirt and watched the chaos erupting below. She saw Saburo, or what she thought was Saburo, come running from the Elder’s den. His hair was matted with blood and he looked to be missing an eye, but his injury didn’t slow him down. He severed the arm of the first snake demon he came to and roughly shoved the small wolf female the hostile demon was holding away. Natsuki saw the girl run, screaming to the dens as the males joined their Beta in the foray. The Elder’s came next, brandishing their katana’s and snarling as they ripped through the unending herd of enemies. She watched with abated breath as more and more of her brethren fell and even more snakes, but they were losing the fight. There were too many snakes, hundreds, maybe more. With numbers like that there could be no victory. A huge silk clad snake demon emerged from the crowd and she watched curiously as the crowd parted to let him pass. Her eyes shot wide when she saw Hiroshi and Ayame trailing behind him. Hiroshi’s smug grin almost made her lose her stomach’s contents. How could he betray them like this? A swift almost unnoticeable movement caught her eye, stealing her thoughts away from the traitorous wolves below. Ginta had surged forward to attack the large demon, but was stopped by the clawed hand of the snake. Natsuki’s heart cried out in pain, causing the turbulent bile from her stomach to rise into her throat at the sight. Ginta’s flailing body went limp and was tossed aside like a rag doll. She pressed her palms to her mouth to muffle the screams of agony that threatened to give away her position. ‘No, not him, anyone, but him.’ The trio made their way to Saburo’s location as casually as if they were walking along a stream not in the middle of a horrible onslaught. Hiroshi walked forward while several snake demons wrestled Saburo to the ground, shoving his face roughly into the dirt before the clawed feet of the large snake youkai. Natsuki assumed he had to be their leader. She saw the Elders being taken captive just the same as Saburo and she felt the first twinges of defeat truly enter her soul. She needed to find help and fast, but who? Kouga was gone without a trace. Kagome and her friends were in the village of Edo, wherever that was. Natsuki had never visited any human settlements and she couldn’t afford to take a wrong turn, there just wasn’t enough time. She climbed silently down the back side of the cliff, her brain running through any ally the pack had and came to only one conclusion. The Taiyoukai of the West, Lord Sesshomaru. He spoke out for Kagome during her trial. He was powerful, powerful enough to destroy their enemies with just a flick of his wrist. It was a long shot, but she would do anything to save her family. Natsuki snuck silently past the group and fought the tears that sprung to her eyes at the sight of her kin being bound and gagged. A group of snake demons were busy stringing an unconscious Saburo up by his wrists beside the Elders on a huge tree just outside the Great Falls. Hiroshi stood in the middle of the massive horde, barking orders and sorting every last wolf left alive. The underlings were being roughly muzzled and their legs were being bound. Any who resisted were executed immediately, no remorse, no quarter given. She needed to hurry, they wouldn’t last much longer. She heard the shouts and hisses of the enemy when she broke cover and ran. She headed West, never looking back to see if she was being pursued, just pumping her legs as hard as she could and prayed to any God that would listen that she would find the InuYoukai of the West in time.
