Chapter Twenty-Two
Possessions
“Uh, Milord, would you mind telling me why you have stolen
the young woman’s clothes?”
“Be quiet, Jaken.”
“Yes, Milord.” Jaken
squeaked, bowing his head and casting a glance towards where Rin sat weaving a
garland of water lilies.
In the lake, Kaji is up to her chin in water, her arms
crossed over her chest with her hands resting on her shoulders.
“So, Priestess, I have finally found you.” A calm, smooth voice spoke.
Turning to where She thought the voice had come from, Kaji
hid any fear her face may have shown.
“Who dares hail me unannounced?” She demanded.
There came no reply, merely a rustling in the bushes as a
small green... thing came from a gap between two bushes. A small girl walked behind it.
“Hi!” The girl
smiled, waving to Kaji.
“Rin, there is no time for that!”
The young girl’se fee fend snd she turned and mumbled,
“Meanie Jaken.”
Paying no attention to Rin, Jaken cleared his throat and
turned to Kaji, an unreadable expression on her face.
“Who are you?” Kaji demanded, “And where is the one whom
hailed me first? Neither of you has the
voice to match that of the one who called.”
“Lord Sesshomaru has assigned me, his loyal servant, to deal
you you.”
Kaji quirked an eyebrow, “And what of my clothes?”
“You needn’t worry about them,” Jaken said, moving closer to the
edge of the water, “Lord Sesshomaru gathered them so as to ensure you would not
leave, Priestess.”
“Question,” Kaji said, rising out of the water so her whole
upper body was above the surface, “why do you call me ‘Priestess’?”
“Are you not the priestess with whom milord’s worthless
hanyou half brother fell in love with?”
“Excuse me?”
Jaken looked as though he were getting irritated, “Are you
not the priestess Kikyo?”
Kaji’s once unreadable expression became angry, and Jaken
swore he saw all seven hells burning in the woman’s eyes.
“How many more people are going to confuse me for her?! I am not Kikyo!” Kaji yelled, not once caring for her nudity
as she stepped out of the water and began walking back to the campsite she’d
left.
“Then you must be her reincarnation, that girl who broke
through milord’s armor with one of her arrows?
The girl that now travels with milord’s foolish half brother.”
Growling, Kaurneurned and pointed the index finger of her
right hand at Jaken, one one thing, Inu-Yasha is not a ‘worthless
hanyou’. Another thing, does my aura
resemble that of a human?!”
“No.” Jaken squeaked,
a sound that only pushed Kaji’s anger further, for the noise was quite
unwelcome.
“My name is not Kagome, and I am not
human! My current name is Kaji, and I
am a fire demon from the other side of this world! Have I made myself clear?”
Kaji asked, a warm tendril of fire creeping its way around her right arm
all the way down to her index finger.
“Y-Y-Yes, Lady Kaji.”
Jaken stammered.
“Good,” Kaji said as she continued up the path, still not
grabbing anything to cover herself with, “well at least Miroku will enjoy
the show.”
So infuriated with the small... thing was she, that
Kaji bumped into something very firm.
Taking a few steps back and rubbing her head, Kaji looked up.
Only to be caught by eyes of cold hardened gold.
Her sapphire eyes widening, Kaji took a few more steps
back. The golden-eyed man stepped
forward.
“Jaken.”
The little green thing scurried to his lord’s side,
“Yes, Milord?”
“Bring it.”
“Yes Milord!”
Kaji’s eyes were still locked on the eyes of the man in front
of her. He had two red stripes on each
of his cheeks, and a dark blue crescent moon upon his forehead.
“So, you think that just because you are not the priestess I
originally thought you to be, you may leave?”
Straightening herself to her full height of 5’ 3”, Kaji held
her head high, “I have no previous dealings with thee or thy family, so if thou
wouldst be so kind as to let me pass...”
“No.”
Kaji blinked, “I beg your pardon?”
“You claimed to be a fire demon, and I have seen it to be
true. You shall come back with me.”
“I most certainly will not!” Kaji exclaimed, phantom
flames dancing around her body, “I have business here, and you shall not
be taking me from it!”
Acting as though he had not heard her, Sesshomaru continued,
“Besides, you carry the mark of an assassin, something that shall be of great
use to me.”
Kaji was about to protest when she saw the small thing
carrying a golden chain about three feet long and hand it to his lord.
“No,” Kaji breathed, “not that. Not the Chain of Solocai!”
Click.
The flames that danced around her were gone, and Kaji truly
felt human.
“With your fire locked away, you are now as weak as any
human. Your fire abilities shall return
only when the chain is removed, or if you are in any immediate danger.” The man named Sesshomaru said, taking his
kimono and placing it upon her shoulders.
“If you would enslave me by using the Chain of Solocai, why
do you give me your own clothing?”
“I would be a fool to allow you to become ill. I have an assignment for you, and you need
to be in good health to perform it.”
Realizing that Sesshomaru had yet to take the chain in his
hand, Kaji was about to step forward when she saw the little girl the thing
had called Rin.
“Why would a demon take a human child?” She thought to
herself, not even realizing she was being led to a two-headed dragon, “Why
indeed, Idiot. You took in a
human child, but you were cursed to be a human then. So then why would a demon, whom is still a demon, take on a human
charge?”
She was being lifted onto the dragon, and as she turned her
head to the left, she saw Sesshomaru walking to the front of the dragon, taking
the reins so as to guide it. Jaken was
at his side, squeaking away like a church mouse that had suddenly gone on
strike.
“Lord Sesshomaru?”
Kaji looked to the right and then down to see the little girl
named Rin walking at the demon’s other side.
“What is it, Rin?”
“Are we going to camp soon?
My feet hurt.”
Jaken scoffed, “Foolish human. Lord Sesshomaru stops when he pleases. Isn’t that right, Sesshomaru-sama?”
Having had enough of the thing’s pessimism towards
humans, Kaji slipped off the dragon, and picked up a rock. She’d be ready when it next spoke.
“Please Lord Sesshomaru?
Couldn’t we stop for just a little while?”
“Didn’t you listen to a word I said? Lord Sesshomaru stops...”
“Would you shut up?!”
Kaji exclaimed, flicking the rock at the thing’s head, smiling
when it hit.
“Ow!” Jaken
exclaimed, turning around to face his attacker.
Kae>Kaji glared at him, “Speak no ill of humans whilst in my
presence, do you understand?”
“Silence, you! You’re
a prisoner and should not be speaking that way to me!”
Kaji’s eyes flared, “Is that so, Thing? I’ll have you know that if we were in my
father’s lands your head would be dangling from a tree’s limb held up by thy
entrails.”
Once she was sure Jaken was purely terrified, Kaji turned to
walk over to Rin, who stood next to Sesshomaru. He seemed to be holding back a smirk.
Jaken was mumbling to himself, “Damned female...”
Kneeling down in front of Rin, Kaji held out her arms, “Come
on, Rin, I’ll carry you. This way
stupid Thing over there won’t complain and then cause me to wring his
little neck.”
Looking unsure of herself, Rin allowed Kaji to pick her up,
“Arigatou, Kaji-sama.”
“You’re welcome, but please, call me Kaji-chan. It’s all right,” Kaji said, a smile on her
face as she turned to Sesshomaru, “well?
You’re kidnapping me, right?”
“I suppose you could call it that.”
“Why? What does my
being an assassin have to do with anything?”
Kaji asked, trying to keep her voice calm.
“I told you that I had an assignment for you.”
Unable to bite back her tongue any longer, Kaji exclaimed, “What
if I don’t want to do your little ‘assignment’? In case you didn’t know, I already have things to do! There is someone on that cliff that needs
me! Come to think of it, there are several
people on that cliff that need me!
There’s K-chan, and Sango-san, and Kouga-kun, Kagura-san, oh and...”
Sesshomaru turned to face her, startling Kaji so she took an
unintentional step back, “Kagura?”
Putting on a stern face, Kaji answered, “Yes. Kagura-san.”
“As in the wind sorceress Kagura?”
“Hai.”
“And why is she with you?”
“We are allies, she and I.
That, and we’re friends.”
“How did this come about?”
“I gave her a way to weaken Naraku and in return, she had to
become our friend and ally,” Kaji said, shifting Rin in her arms as she turned
and put the younger girl on top of the dragon, “why the sudden interest in my
affairs, huh? Take me back!”
“I cannot do that.”
“Why in the seven hells not?!”
“Because you are the daughter of Maru, and you shall make me
the most powerful demon lord this land has ever seen.”
Hiding her surprise, Kaji replied, “That’s Usu-Maru to
you! And anyhow, I don’t think you’re
gonna be gettin’ much power from me with this thricebedamned collar and
chain!”
Seeing that Sesshomaru was unaffected by her outburst, Kaji turned
and began walking in the opposite direction.
“Where do you think you’re going, Woman?” Jaken asked, hopping in her tracks trying to
bring her back.
She turned, an angry fire in her eyes, “I’m going back to
Kouga-kun! At least he doesn’t care
about what kind of power I could bring him!
Collared and chained or not, I don’t care! All that matters is that I love him!”
Not about to show her surprise at her own statement, Kaji
turned and immediately felt something tap a pressure point near her neck.
“Sleep now.” Came the
soothing voice she’d heard earlier by the stream.
As she fell to the ground, eyes half-closed, Kaji only had
time to think of one thing, “Kouga-kun...”
Back on the cliff...
Kouga’s eyes snapped open as he sat up, heedless of the dizziness
that followed his actions. He turned to
look at all those around the fire, whom seemed oblivious to the fact he had
awoken.
“Where is she?”
Everyone turned around to face him, startled at his suddenKagome stood and walked over to him, kneeling in front of
him, “You mean Ota-chan?”
“Yes. Where is
she? The last thing I heard was that
you banished her.”
Kagome grimaced, “I will admit that I banished her. But I only banished her name and her
body. I never banished her shape.”
“So what are you trying to tell me?”
“Ota-chan now goes by the name Kaji, and she kind of
‘borrowed’ the body of one of your wolves.
She changed its shape to match that of her real body, with only one
change so that she’d be allowed here.
She’s bathing right now.”
“Except that she’s been gone for an hour.” Inu-Yasha said, opening one eye to look at
the wolf.
Kouga stood up, his eyes ablaze with an inner rage, “What do
you mean?”
“Just what I said, Stupid Wolf.”
“I wouldn’t start arguing if I were you,” Kagura said, her
voice like a knife to cut the two apart, “the wind whispers of an evil deed
just done.”
Kouga turned to face her, “What are you doing here?”
“Easy, Kouga! She’s
on our side, now!” Kagome said,
grabbing his arm.
“That doesn’t mean I’ll forgive her for killing my comrades!”
“Well you can fight with me later, Wolf,” Kagura said,
stepping into the firelight, giving her face an eerie glow, “the one that binds
us all together is gone.”
Silencel ovl over the campsite.
Kagome broke it, “What are you talking about, Kagura-san?”
Inu-Yasha immediately stood, hand on his Tetsusaiga,
“Sesshomaru!”
“What?!” Kouga asked,
whirling around to face the hanyou.
“Of course,” Kaede began, “a demon such as himself would
be attracted to one such as she.”
“What’s going on here?!”
Kouga demanded.
Kaede sighed, “Kaji-san is the daughter of a very powerful
demon, named Usu-Maru. He was the Ruler
of the South in his land, just as Sesshomaru is the Lord of the West in this
land. Sesshomaru probably wants
Kaji-san because of the power she could bring him. It is known in both worlds that the daughter of Usu-Maru
surpassed her own father in strength many years ago.”
Kouga had turned his back on Kaede as she explained the
circumstances. He was facing the path
that Kaji had taken just an hour before.
He started walking towards it.
“Kouga, where are you going?” Shippo asked, scampering in Kouga’s path to make him stop.
Not even looking down at him, Kouga replied, “I’m going to
reclaim what’s mine.”
Inu-Yasha chuckled, “You know, Wolf, she’s not actually yours.”
Kouga turned to snarl at Inu-Yasha, “When I get her back, she
will be mine!
