Disclaimer: I don’t know Rumiko Takahashi, so I can’t say I own any of this. Now the warning: YAOI. That’s right, man lovin’ man. If you don’t like that, you don’t have to read another word. If you don’t like my pairing, you don’t have to read it, but you’ll be missing out! I’m constantly reading InuYasha fics with pairings I don’t like just because I like the story. But if you don’t like my story, please be polite when you tell me. And also, tell me why. Or if you do like it, review and write whatever you want, LOL.

Kirara seemed to sense something was wrong first. She started growling and twitching her tails in agitation. Sango asked her what was wrong, but she only whined in response and didn’t lead them anywhere. But as they continued walking, her whine became almost piteous. She really didn’t like what was coming. Sesshomaru was the next to respond, by freezing in place and gazing around.
“What is it?” Miroku asked.
“Blood,” he answered. InuYasha frowned and sniffed the air.
“I don’t smell it,” the hanyo said. “It’s not that close yet.”
“No.”
“Is it human?” Kagome asked, looking worried.
“Yes,” Sesshomaru answered. Something was obviously bothering him, though and Miroku didn’t think it was a human battle, no matter how many bodies. He pushed his wet hair off his face and shook a clump of mud off his sandal. It had been raining all day: a hot, relentless downpour. He looked down at Rin, who was wearing his rain hatand she smiled up at him. He slowed down and let everyone walk a distance ahead before sidling up beside Sesshomaru and asking, “What is it?”
“I smell the blood of human infants.” Sesshomaru said softly. Miroku stopped. Sesshomaru stopped next to him.
“Babies smell different?” Miroku asked, trying to push away what he had just heard. He didn’t want it to be true.
“Their blood is different. It changes as they age.”
“How do you know that?”
“I have seen many dead bodies over the centuries.”
“Centuries?” Miroku repeated in disbelief. Sesshomaru nodded and resumed walking. Miroku quickened his pace to keep up with Sesshomaru and catch up with his friends. He mulled over this new bit of information and began to understand, in a small part, why Sesshomaru avoided humans as a rule. If he had already lived centuries and was so young, then he would have to watch any mortal he cared for grow old and die while he barely aged. “We should stop here for the night,” Miroku called. The rest of the party stopped and looked around. There was an almost dry area under several tightly packed trees that looked ideal for keeping dry.
“But it’s still light out,” Kagome said. Miroku glanced at InuYasha, who had obviously heard what his brother had said. “What if people are hurt just ahead? Shouldn’t we see if we can help?”
“I still can’t smell it, so it would most likely be dark before we got there. Besides,” InuYasha continued, “If it’s a battle, we don’t want to be involved.” He didn’t meet Kagome’s eyes as he said it, looking instead in the direction they were walking. Miroku realized that InuYasha had just lied to Kagome. He could smell the blood. Miroku sniffed, but he couldn’t smell anything himself, which meant whatever it was that was killing infants wouldn’t be near their camp tonight. And, more importantly, he didn’t have to see any dead babies right before going to sleep. If InuYasha didn’t want to go forward, that meant he didn’t think they could help anyone anyway.
“Alright, if you’re sure,” Kagome said.
“I’m sure there’s nothing we can do to help today,” InuYasha said, turning to face her. She smiled weakly at him, and then started setting up camp. Miroku breathed a sigh of relief. It was cowardly, but there were some horrors he would rather not have in his mind. He doubtlessly wouldn’t get to avoid this one, but he might be able to put it off for a while, at least. He decided to stay with Rin for the night, forgoing the companionship of Sesshomaru in favor of protecting his child. Miroku blinked hard, thinking the phrase again. ‘My child. My… daughter.’ He smiled. He watched Rin laughing and playing with Shippo and felt a strong rush of happiness.
He had no idea how fleeting it would be.
…
Sesshomaru woke in the middle of the night, unsettled by something, though he wasn’t sure what. He decided to check on the sleeping camp. As he approached, dread began to fill him and he picked up speed, desperately trying to scent Miroku or Rin. He burst into camp in a full run and looked around frantically. As he feared, they were gone.
“What’s wrong?” InuYasha asked sleepily, obviously having trouble waking. Sesshomaru frowned. His brother may have had his faults, but being slow to awaken was not one of them.
“Where are Miroku and Rin?” Sesshomaru demanded. InuYasha looked across the camp, his eyes dull and Sesshomaru detected an odd smell in the air. It was almost flowery, but cloying, sticking to the back of his throat.
“What the hell’s wrong with me?” InuYasha gasped. He tried to stand in the tree and promptly fell, crashing noisily to the ground. But no one stirred. Sesshomaru walked over to his brother’s mate and leaned down, listening to hear heart beat. It was slow, but she was definitely alive. They were all drugged. Sesshomaru was completely resistant to poisons, but he was the only one. He watched InuYasha pulling himself into a standing position using the tree he had been sleeping in, then searched for any sign that Miroku and Rin had simply walked off. He found Rin’s few belongings in Ah-un’s saddle: her comb and the kimono he found her in. Miroku’s staff lay against the tree he had slept under. That was the proof Sesshomaru was looking for. They had not left freely, for Miroku would not go anywhere with the child unarmed.
They had been kidnapped.
Sesshomaru was momentarily blinded by rage as his vision faded to red and he nearly transformed. He composed himself and began taking a scent reading of the area, but quickly was forced to abandon it, as all he could smell was the sleeping poison permeating everything. He sought out any other youkai with his remaining senses and swiftly found a large group, thirty or more, to the west. He started to move out, but then he looked around the camp and realized it was entirely defenseless. If he left, his brother would not be able to protect it and would likely die trying. He could not abandon him, or even the mortals that Miroku cared so much for. But every moment he wasted could be time that Miroku and Rin were being harmed.
He gave no outward sign that he was ready to slaughter anything that presented itself as an obstacle to defending his family, for that is what the two ningen had become to him: his family. He may have given Rin to Miroku, but he still looked on her as a daughter. And Miroku was his mate. Someone was going to die. Potentially, several ‘someone’s were going to die. Painfully. For now, all he could do was wait until his brother was lucid again. Then the hunt would begin.
…
To be continued…Poor Miroku and Rin, being in mortal danger twice in as many days. But you know what they say: bad things come in threes. So I guess they have one more particularly horrid torment in store… or do they? Zetsumei may have been the first and this may have been the last… forever. After all, we don’t know that they’re even still alive… Don’t beg ME to save them, that’s entirely up to Sesshomaru-sama. Let’s just hope, for the sake of everyone, that he gets there in time.
YoukaiObsessed: -points to bottom of the clifff, where only Jaken sits, still unconscious from Shadowed Blade's rock- Do you really think I'd toss you down there? With Jaken? -lifts you off her leg and hugs you sweetly- -gives you a great big smile, then tosses your ass over the side, grinning as she watches you bullseye onto Jaken- Hehehehe. Of course I would. -realizes she killed you- Oops. -sneaks off, grabs Tenseiga and runs as fast as her feet will take her, tossing off the scented bag she used to trick Sess's nose, runs down the cliff, revives you and drags your butt back up to the top, ties you to the fence and sticks Tenseiga in your lap before running off- Although you almost had me with the "Resistance is futile" line (I wrote 7of9 femslash.. I have a thing for emotionally reserved characters, I guess). I really loved writing that scene with Rin and Miroku, it's one of my favorite in the whole story! Their whole dynamic, with her taking to him as a father is something I'm rather happy with. Thanks! And also, thanks for the review on Jakotsu's Happy Day! Yeah, I enjoyed the thought of Nar/Ja/Inu a little too much considering that I'm not a Naraku fan at all. I like Jakotsu, though. I'm still faithfully yowling "HE" every time one of my friends refers to him in a feminine way because they are threatened by his lack of masculinity, LOL. Not that he'd appreciate it, me being a girl and all, but hey, I can still defend him!
Isebeau: Why thank you for the review and compliments. Miroku has struck me as the type to be a very good father, especially after seeing him with all the snow-babies that he thought were real orphans. I'm sorry you don't like my use of the term 'rosary beads' but it is not a term mutually exclusive to the catholic faith. They do tend to refer to a specific type of prayer bead set, but they have fallen into common use as meaning any set of strung prayer beads. I don't know if I use the term again, but I'm not likely to edit one word out of my stories when it is a good word. Still, I don't even think I use the term again. But if I do, please ignore it, edit it in your mind, whatever. I know plenty of stories that use words I find offensive and I just ignore the word. Keep enjoying the story!
Shadowed Blade: YAOI ROCKS
Kira: Nope, no more, I'm afraid. The story's actually getting a bit darker from here on in. Chapter 20 was the climax of their relationship focus, excuse the pun. Not to say it's not still there and they're not still having hot puppy love, but it's no longer integral to the plot. InuYasha's youkai blood completely protected him from the vampire, just like it kept him from entering the dimension where human's souls are drawn into hell. Not difficult at all! I appreciate it when my reviewers make me think about whether something could have been done better (especially in such a polite way). It helps me with my future writings (and those are not few or far between lately -.-; )
Hanyou Slave: I liked the 'drop' moment, too. It shows that Miroku has come to trust Sesshomaru completely. He may still fear him from time to time (come on, he's a scary guy) but the way he confronted him later in the chapter shows that there is a definite trust bond, which is important in a relationship. A lack of one is what destroyed InuYasha and Kikyo, after all. Yes, I posted two chapters at once (19 and 20) because they needed to flow together to work best. Then I posted a third later that same day! I'm posting faster than I realize, believe you me! Thank you for saying my lemon was picturesque (or at least the climax) I do try to paint a pretty picture (it helps that I have such lovely subjects). Yes, Miroku hurt Sesshomaru's feelings. I thought that would be a bit of a turnaround, considering. My action was good, then? I'm glad for that! I particularly liked the image of the fangs swinging together, the brothers working together. Showing how they're all becoming a working unit. Earlier I had posted how Sesshomaru refused to participate in the battles, but this showed how much things are changing. I bet this chapter that you just read makes you want to go on that killing spree even more. There's a reason that the next chapter's note is "All Hell breaks loose" and I think you'll feel a little better... and a lot worse... as soon as it's done and up.
Bob: Yes, that was a nice long chapter! Glad you loved it!
Kai: Glad you're enjoying!
Lilly: Yup. I've never had this many reviews before (I mean, I've seen stories with literally thousands of reviews, but I feel so special just hitting my 100 mark!). It's up to 115 as I write this and I'm just floored. Yup, a bug WAFF-y chapter! Yes, Sesshomaru was very well named. Some translate it as "Destruction of the Circle of Life" (and I've seen this really coolavatar that says "Your Circle Ends Here" with Sesshomaru on it) since 'maru' also means circle. Sessho: killing; the destruction of life and Maru: circle;full (month); perfection;purity. I'm the first person I've seen to translate it as Purity of Destruction that I've seen, lol. Killing Perfection is slmost as common as the 'end of the circle of life.'. The first time I saw a wall scroll, I fell in love with the format. I always hated how paper posters were so easy to tear or otherwise damage. I wish wallscrolls would spread everywhere. Well, my husband does avoid the tragedies and explicit yaoi as much as possible, but he tries. We met on a femslash list and he keeps pestering me to write some yuri, but I'm just not into the female characters of any anime well enough. My mom's Buddhist (irony of ironies, when I was 14 if you had said I would be learning Japanese language and culture again and voluntarily at that, I would have laughed at you until I hurt myself or just called you a liar, I was certain I'd left it all behind; but I had a very unusual childhood) so she doesn't care about homosexuality and she's never pushed religion on me of any form (I'm not Buddhist myself, I'm a monotheist and believe in more of a nature-based faith). But I haven't cared about what other peope think in a long time. I was ostracized so badly at one point in my life that I don't worry about it anymore. You know, the whole what didn't kill me made me stronger thing.Heck, even my friend who groans at Jakotsu left and right for his flamingness is reading this story and enjoying it. I'm a terrible corruptive influence, LOL. But I'm infuriatingly apathetic to people ripping me apart for what I believe or enjoy (self-defense mechanism), so no one bothers tearing me apart that much, finding it useless. I'm very open about who I am, what I believe and my passions because I feel honesty is the best policy (partly in rebellion to the lies my family bathes itself in, partly because I hate not being able to tell truth from lies, so I try not to add to the confusion). I know a thing or two about closets (being bisexual myself) and find that they're stifling for some and cozy for others. As long as it's not making you miserable, a closet can be a safe refuge. I'm glad you liked me going into the small details. They make up so much of life they should never be ignored, so I try not to ;) Sesshomaru's concession to InuYasha on the killing blow was showing a growth in the relationship between the brothers that's expanded upon this chapter. I was actually writing for Sesshomaru to kill the fox, but InuYasha got there first. It was a bastard of an opponent and he had so much trouble because he was badly distracted. It's something he's going to have to learn to adjust for. And he was quite angry, but he was more focused on keeping Miroku safe than the actual fight. He couldn't just swing toukijin left and right because he might hit one of his allies. It made for clumsy fighting, which is why he was being so patient. As he said, if the youkai had escaped, he would have easily tracked it to a place better suited for the fight. I've actually been rather upset that the story's ending. I keep nitpicking the chapters to death to stretch it all out. This is my big epic fic. I swore them off a long time ago partly because I'm easily infected by sequelitis, partly because they are consuming in many ways and partly because it's much harder to let go to a story I've put so much work and time into. If Sesshomaru were mine... -can't think anymore, vision too powerful, moment of joy all-encompassing- ahem. Yes, it's the thought that counts. As long as he doesn't mind, of course, LOL. And please continue to write such lovely reviews, I appreciate them! And you as well! -hugs-
Shanna: Yes, I watched Star Trek a long time. I love science fiction as much as I love horror and fantasy. I say I'm a nerd, lol. And a freak. And I'm quite proud of both. I'll take a label meant as an insult and parade it around with pride! Don't worry, Sesshomaru gets pleeeeenty of opportunity to kill. You reread this story a lot? Wow, lol. You must really like it, I'm flattered! Yes, 'fleshing the chappies' does sound kinky, hehehe. Ahh, corruption, I do love it so...
