“You are creeping me out.” You say, trying to tug his arm from around your neck.
Inuyasha’s arm loosens around you to slide around your shoulders. “How so?”
It is indeed nice outside today like he said. The sun is shining, and the wind is blowing through the trees. It’s a little cool, but Inuyasha’s body temperature against you makes up for it. You’ve been walking for at least ten minutes now, and hopefully he knew the way back because you didn’t leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind.
“You seem happy all of a sudden.” You tilt your head back and stare at his smirking lips.
Inuyasha looks at you and his smile is more of a sneer this time. “I’m always happy when I’m with you.”
“Now it’s just scary.” You narrow your eyes, and frown at him. “Or very mean.”
He snorts. “You think this is scary?”
“In an ‘oh my god, he’s gone crazy’ sort of way, yes,” you nod and carefully avoid tripping over a fallen branch on the ground.
“Maybe I have, my dear wife.” Inuyasha shrugs and grins. “Now let me recite you a haiku-“
“Excuse me?” You pull away from him and raise an eyebrow. “You know what haikus are?”
“-About your beauty as we hold hands and skip through the forest.” He reaches out and takes your hand.
“That’s disgusting!” You snatch your hand away and step back. “Are you making fun of me?”
He grits his teeth and smiles as he talks. “I don’t know what you mean, my darling.” Inuyasha steps forward and reaches out to grab you.
You back away out of his reach. “Stay back, imposter!”
“Come here, let me hold you and whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”
“No way!”
“My beautiful wife, come here, I said!”
As he approaches, you quickly sidestep and avoid his attempts at grabbing you. His pace towards you quickens at once and you run away to escape his clutches. Calling out words of love and compliments, Inuyasha gives chase after you.
“Gross! I like it better when you’re mean and angry!” You cry out in response.
“I can never get mad at you, you’re perfect!” He yells from somewhere behind you.
“Go away!” You sharply zigzag around trees and bushes trying to lose him.
After a few moments, when the gushing of love and compliments and the sound of someone following you goes silent, you slow down to a stop to rest against a tree. You sigh and press your hand against your chest to feel your pounding heartbeat.
The only way to explain this is if Inuyasha has a delightful twin brother who’s in love with you… Or he’s just seriously messing with you as the jerk that he is. If only for your sanity, you decide to go with the latter. But what if he does have a delightful twin brother? Hm..
You grimace as the thought. It would be cute to have someone who looks exactly like Inuyasha happy all of the time and giving out hugs, but it would still be creepy and wrong. Compliments are nice, but not when overdone especially to this extreme. It only made what he said to you earlier so much more genuine, and you’d never forget it. Like his feelings for you, which he’s normally too shy to say aloud, mean so much more when he says them at rare times when you need to hear them the most, instead of when wanting to hear them the most.
“Oh, a bunny!” You catch sight of a small, adorable bunny hopping along through the bushes a short distance ahead of you. The little bunny stops and seems to look in your direction before hurriedly hopping away into the bushes. “I wish I had a camera...” You sigh.
When a sharp, hard beak suddenly tries to pierce through your skull, you jerk and look up. A bird that you don’t recognize is above you batting its wings frantically; it swoops down to land another strike on you. With a cry of surprise and fear, you cover your head and take off running back the way you came.
With a couple glances behind, you see that the screeching bird is still following you. “Leave me alone! I don’t want your tree or your babies!”
“…What?” Ahead of you, seeming to have been walking in your direction, Inuyasha stops, looking baffled.
“It’s following me!” You race around him, and attempt to use him as a human shield, but unfortunately the bird sees through your tactic and chases you right around him instead. “Ahh! Crazy bird!”
Inuyasha, of course coming to your rescue, swats and wipes at the bird, until the bird retaliates and pecks him on the forehead. “Argh! Damn bird!” Inuyasha’s next swing lands and bird hits and bounces off the ground before shakily flying away.
“That poor little bird,” you furrow your brows worriedly. “I hope it’s ok... I can’t believe you punched a bird, that’s terrible.”
“You were running away from it screaming! Isn’t that worst? You’re a scaredy cat!” Inuyasha scoffs and crosses his arms.
“I am not a scaredy cat just because I didn’t want to beat up a little animal! And I was only screaming to... Scare it away. It must have thought I was threatening its nest because it kept following me.”
“Yeah right, it kept following you because it smelled fear. The strong always prey on the weak.”
“I am not weak compared to a little bird!”
“Yeah? Then prove it! Go over there and give that bird a good smack for pushing you around!”
“I’ll give you a good smack. I can’t believe you’re encouraging violence against little animals!” You come to a quick realization and grin. “But hey, you’re not acting creepy and disgusting anymore! Did an evil spirit enter your body?” You give him a hug to show your appreciation for said evil spirit leaving his body.
“Get off me, Scaredy-cat.” Inuyasha shifts in your embrace with some attempt at getting away.
You smile and rub your cheek against his chest. “I love you, too.”
“You say I was acting disgusting? Cut it out. I’ll leave you out here.”
“Don’t tell lies, I know you would never leave me.”
“If you keep getting overconfident, I’ll tie you to a tree, and then leave you.”
“Whatever you say, husband.”
After a moment, he seems to give in to your hug and wraps his arms around you a little tight. “Speaking of which, why did you leave?”
You look up at him and frown. “Weren’t you listening to anything I said?”
Inuyasha frowns back and starts to reply, but pauses upon hearing the screech of a bird and several others following. At Inuyasha’s silence, and seeing him stare off at something behind you, you look over your shoulder to see a flock of birds furiously flapping towards you with something like a murderous aura surrounding them.
O.o.O
“I hate birds! What was there? Like twenty? Thirty? I want to go back to Tokyo where there are no angry bird gangs!” You say between panting for air.
Inuyasha, who had taken the brunt of the beating, looking bruised and tattered, growls and clenches his fists. “You go back; I’m going to stay out for a while. By the way, how do you feel about roast pigeons?”
“To eat? Gross. But they had pretty feathers that I’m sure would make a lovely feather boa.” You stand up straight from leaning against a tree and look around. A short distance away, between the foliage of trees you see a dirt road maybe leading to a deeper part of the forest or maybe another town. “Where..? Do you remember the way back?”
Inuyasha sighs and points in a direction behind him, “That way.”
“Thank goodness, let’s go back now. I don’t want to encounter any more animals capable of piercing through the skull, or jabbing eyes out.” You begin to walk pass him, but he reaches out on grabs your wrist.
“Hold it, you never answered my question.” He lets go of your wrist and crosses his arms. “And just so you know, your answer might decide if I will tie you to a tree and leave you.”
“What? What question? I do not recall!” You roll your eyes to the side and tap your chin in mock thought. “You really do like tying me up, don’t you? You’re such a deviant.”
“What? So you won’t to be bound and then tied to a high branch? If that’s what you want.”
You take a step back, matching his step forward and jab him in the chest with your index finger. “You weren’t listening to anything I said, were you?”
“Wha-?” Inuyasha looks taken aback for a moment before recovering his frown. “Yeah!”
You furrow your brows and set your hands on your hips. “Ok, so then why do you think I left?”
“Because you obviously like to frustrate me and the best way to do it is to withhold sex while we’re actually doing it!” He replies, looking certain of his answer.
“…Yes, obviously, since I have nothing better to do with my time nowadays, I think of little ways to torture you through the day. Withholding sex during sex, oh, you saw through my greatest plan! I obviously enjoy pissing you off more than sex itself.”
“Ha, so you admit it!” He smirks.
You throw your hands up in frustration and huff. “No, you idiot! Sex makes babies! I told you I don’t think it’s s a good time for it now!”
“You’re calling me the idiot? Aren’t you too late? We did it last night!”
“I don’t want to take another chance like that. This isn’t where I want to have or raise a baby!”
“Raise?! We’re not going to be here that long!”
“Then how long? Why are we even here? You never explained like you said you would! And with you working in situations like that, like what happened...” You avert your eyes, and squint to try to stop tears from leaking. “I don’t understand any of it, but I don’t want to have to raise our kids alone.”
A short silence befalls between the two of you, and you, unconfident on how break it, quickly rub your cheeks to wipe away the stray tears. Inuyasha steps forward and puts his hands on your shoulders, a little awkward and hesitant.
“…That was a stupid fluke; there aren’t any chances it’ll happen that again.”
You look up to him, feeling hopeful. “How do you know?”
Inuyasha glances away, not meeting your eyes for a long time. “Don’t repeat this to anyone, but there was a spy in my division targeting families of older members. I didn’t think it’d be me, since I was new, but when our place was raided I didn’t want to take any chances until he was caught.”
“Has he been caught? Was Yura the spy?” You ask, carefully taking in the information.
“Sort of, we’re working on it now. The culprit’s been inactive for a month. We’re just waiting for him to make a move. It’ll be soon… So, we’ll be returning to Tokyo in a few weeks.” He finally meets your eyes and gives you a strained smile. “It’ll be over in a month.”
“It’ll be over in a month? Really?”
“Yeah, I’m sure of it.”
You glance to the side uncertainly. “So when you guys find the culprit, will it be something like what happened again?”
Inuyasha gives a short and bitter laugh. “No, we were almost slaughtered then; we know what we’re dealing with now. As long as you’re here, there won’t be any risks. Do you understand now?”
“Yeah.”
The wind blows, lightly ruffling the leaves of the surrounding trees. You stare at a point behind him, watching a bird take flight from the branch of the tree, but not really seeing or paying attention to it. Inuyasha drops his hands from your shoulders.
“So then, in a few weeks, we’ll go back to Tokyo, back to our apartment, and everything will go back to normal, like none of this never happened.” You tell yourself this, and hope that Inuyasha can agree.
“Exactly, like it never happened.” Inuyasha shrugs and replies easily.
“That’s great, I can just... Think of this place as a little vacation! It really isn’t that bad. The hot spring is nice.” You say and smile.
“It must be nice to be so positive.” Inuyasha grunts and turns away.
“How else?” You slip your arm around his and lean your head against his shoulder. “You make me this way; I have to be the positive when you’re negative.”
Inuyasha responds with silence as he walks away, hopefully in the direction of the hot spring inn.
“Hey, are you sure this is the way back?”
O.o.O
Ah, sorry for the wait, I went pass the time I was planning to have this chapter finished, and it’s not as long as I planned either. But I guess this is the most important chapter since the Peach Man-Yura arc, since it’s one large Inuyasha/you moment, but you don’t even kiss once.
