Sesshomaru had left the human village shortly after giving his half-brother a beating he would not soon forget, per the request of his pupil. He never understood why he consented to the Miko’s wishes the way he did, or even the reason he continuously watched over her. She was an unusual human, to say the least, her time travel notwithstanding. The girl had a way of making one care even if their heart was encased in ice. The ookami Prince had been injured and Sesshomaru had felt, had smelled the anxiety that plagued the Miko. It had caused him to remain close, something he did out of pure instinct alone. She had admitted her feelings for the wolf and Sesshomaru had been pleased that she had finally let go of her denial. It annoyed him to no ends that she would choose to be so weak.
Weak, now that was something he had thought she was when he first laid eyes on her, a tiny slip of a girl, following his idiot half-brother around in the most indecent clothing he had ever seen. If he had not been close enough to actually smell her innocence, he would have thought her a woman of ill repute, but, fortunately, he had been wrong. Weak was no longer a word he cared to use for the young woman. It left a sour taste in his mouth anytime he used it in regards to her. She had proven herself in many ways and had taught him, with the help of Rin, that not all humans were spineless cowards, void of any real worth. What a concept, a human had taught him, the Great Lord Sesshomaru, something. The Miko had worth; he could not deny that. Her pure soul and strength of will more than made up for her lack of physical strength. She was smart, polite, clean, and someone he considered to be of value. She was the perfect role model for Rin, even through her depressed moments. Her awakening out of her depression proved that she could be vicious and relentless when it came to something she wanted. Of course, she actually wanting something for herself was rare, but none the less, it had happened. She had shown a part of herself in those moments of raging desire that she would not back down no matter the cost to herself. They were only lessons and curious tests on his part, but in them he had learned so much about the Miko. The fire that burned deep within her being was something that nothing or no one could extinguish. The ookami Prince was a lucky demon, indeed. Sesshomaru hoped that the wolf would not be fool enough to squander such a treasure. Sesshomaru stopped suddenly at the thought. The Miko Kagome, a treasure? He rolled the words around in his mind and contemplated his relationship with the human woman. He had gone out of his way numerous times to save her life. He had trusted her with the care and education of his ward. He had even given her lessons on fighting, self-defense, and how to use a weapon properly and here recently, he had been pushing her to let go of her nonsensical melancholy mood, trying to help her learn a very important lesson, to steady her resolve. These were all things one would do for someone they cared about, considered to be pack. Was she really pack to him or was it something more? Sesshomaru’s mind flashed him images of a snaggled toothed, dirt smudged, little girl in an orange checkered kimono, smiling up at him with adoration shining in her brown eyes any and every time he strode back into camp. Those eyes reminded him of the Miko’s, the way the young woman would look at him after each training session, regardless of how many hits and rolls she took by his hand. If he didn’t know better, he would have thought the girls to be sisters. That word, sisters, clicked the remaining pieces into place, painting him an elaborate portrait of an answer. Sesshomaru did care for the little onna the same way he did for Rin, like a father would a daughter. She was one he could pass his knowledge to, someone who sat with rapt attention when he spoke, obeyed his commands without pause, someone he trusted, respected, and could talk to without worry that she would try to use the knowledge against him, someone who wasn’t afraid to add her own opinion and stand up for what she believed in. She was a rarity among her kind, just like Rin, just as he was among his. A rare smile spread across his face at the realization and his chest swelled with pride. He amended his earlier thought. Kouga was not the lucky demon, he was. He had two very capable and precious daughters. Their humanity meant nothing to him, just the worth of their souls. His father’s ominous words, ‘Do you have someone to protect?’ drifted through his mind. The meaning had been lost on him when the Inu General flew off to save an unborn InuYasha and his mother. For centuries he had pondered his father’s words and had found no relevance to incorporate the final lesson into his own life, so he tossed them aside, categorizing them as the words of a great demon turned weak by his affection for a worthless human. It wasn’t until he met Rin that those words haunted his thoughts once more. He had part of the connotation, but not the full understanding. That is not until now. He would never voice such affections, it was not his way, but the implications remained. They were his to protect, his to watch over, mated or not, his pups. It was a satisfying fulfillment in his otherwise barren life. He had traveled the roads in search of supreme conquest, but had found something more along the way. He had a family, something he had not had since his youth. It was something somewhat foreign to him, but not in an uncomfortable way. A family had never truly entered his thoughts, only the need for an heir, but he felt he had many centuries to make that kind of decision. He had yet to meet a demoness worthy enough to bear his pup, so he pushed the duty into the recesses of his life. Kagome and Rin were human, not of his blood and therefore could not obtain his title or lands, but in all symbolism they were his. Any pup born of him would honor the girls and their descendants with reverence and praise. He would make it so they never went without and their future generations would know of what their Mothers had accomplished and would flourish under the watchful eyes of his house. They had successfully melted the ice around the Taiyoukai of the West’s heart. What an achievement for two tiny, human women. If he was to be defeated, he was glad that it was in this way. This way he had not lost anything, but procured something priceless, something he would have never gained had he never met those two quirky young girls, something he was proud of and would kill to protect. Sesshomaru’s ears twitched and he raised his regal nose to the air and inhaled deeply. There was a wolf, female, if he was correct and he always was, headed directly for him. What was a wolf doing in the Western Lands? How interesting. Sesshomaru retained his position and allowed the female to make her way to him. The closer she got the more he could smell the turbulence of her emotions. She was frightened and anxious, but what he smelled above all else, was grief. Natsuki had run for two days straight, never stopping, ignoring the pangs of fatigue. She had picked up Lord Sesshomaru’s scent halfway through the first day and had sent her appreciation to the Gods that he had decided to walk instead of take his cloud or ball of light. She stopped long enough to take in a lung full of air to ascertain her needed destination. She could smell him not far off and her heart thundered in her chest in anticipation. She sped off again in the direction that held the Eastern ookami tribe’s possible salvation. She forced the thoughts of how to convince the Inuyoukai to help away. Instead she focused solely on her goal and the most efficient way to reach it before the demon Lord moved on. She was in luck; he didn’t seem to be moving at all. Natsuki plunged through the underbrush and stumbled in her haste, falling to her hands and knees at the black leather clad feet of the demon Lord she had been searching for. She raised hesitant eyes to meet the cool glare of Lord Sesshoamru and scrambled to her feet. She rushed through a bow and apologized fervently for imposing upon his personal space. He just stood there throughout her entire floundering display stoic and silent, making her uneasiness in his presence soar to unimaginable heights. She really should have put more thought into this whole meeting. “Lord Sesshomaru, I…I’m Natsuki from the Eastern ookami tribe an…and I’ve c…co…come to…um…ask for y…your assistance.” She stammered out nervously, fighting the urge to fidget to preserve some of her dignity. “This Sesshomaru owes the wolves nothing.” He replied in his normal bored tone. Natsuki had expected this, but actually hearing the refusal incensed her. How could he so lightly brush her aside? “My Lord, please. I beg of you to hear me out.” She pleaded, finding her courage and ookami pride. “Proceed.” Lord Sesshomaru consented with a raised brow. “Our pack has come under attack. Prince Kouga is nowhere to be found and our Elders and Beta have been captured. I escaped to find help.” She explained in a rush. “Who has attacked your kin?” He asked, clearly intrigued. “We were betrayed by one of our own, Hiroshi, and an outcast named Ayame. They led the snakes to our lands and helped them in the attack. At least that is what I believe from seeing them with the Snake Clan Leader. Please, My Lord, I implore you to help. My kin were being slaughtered when I left and I have been gone for too long. Their lives depend on your decision. Please, help.” Natsuki begged, kneeling and bowing her forehead to the forest floor in submission. “Stand, girl. Why come to this Sesshomaru instead of finding your Alpha?” Sesshomaru asked. “I don’t know where to look. He could be anywhere, but even if he returned, one lone wolf would not be enough to vanquish our enemies. Their numbers are too great. You spoke out for Kagome and even though we are not allies on a political scale, you stood up for my sister. I had to take the risk in asking. You alone hold the power to free my kin and we will perish without your assistance.” She explained without shame. “You consider the Miko your sister, even though your Elders deemed her unworthy?” Sesshomaru asked again. “Yes, the Elders handed down their edict, but they cannot control my beliefs. I am proud to call the Miko Kagome sister.” She exclaimed proudly. “Very well, this Sesshomaru will assist you. However, your Alpha must be retrieved first.” He agreed walking to the East, Natsuki following behind. “How am I supposed to do that, My Lord? I don’t have a clue where to look.” She asked. “This One does. Your Beta brought him to Edo to be cared for by the Miko. He was poisoned by the very snakes that have attacked your pack. This Sesshomaru believes this matter to be quite personal indeed. Climb on.” He explained, motioning to the young female as he formed his cloud. Natsuki nodded dumbly while climbing aboard the cloud and sitting at the Inuyoukai’s feet. She had a sudden wash of relief and trepidation crash over her. She was relieved that she had gained an ally, especially one who knew where Kouga was and a sense of trepidation because she wasn’t so sure there would be a pack to save once they got there. She had no choice but to follow this through, so she stowed her emotions and put on a brave face. Her stomach leapt into her throat when the demon Lord ascended into the sky. The speeds they were traveling at were unsettling, even by wolf standards. Sesshomaru had made his decision the moment the female mentioned the name Hiroshi. He hadn’t agreed to settle the squabbles of an Eastern tribe out of the goodness of his heart, no matter how much ice had been melted. No, he had a score to settle. He would finally get his chance to teach that smug, cowardly bastard a lesson and he would get the opportunity to do the same to his little coconspirator. Sesshomaru guessed that this female outcast had been the one to orchestrate the entire ploy. They both would see where deceiving the Great Lord of the Western Lands would get them. Oh, yes, they were going to meet their fates at the end of his poison whip. He would not tarnish his sword with the blood of such cowards. Honor commanded that he find the leader of the ookami pack and inform him of the attack. That was the only reason for this little delay. He wanted nothing more than to race to the dens and lay waste to anything that stood in his way to reach that filth Hiroshi and his bitch, but he couldn’t, not yet. He hoped that the Miko had restored the ookami Prince to full health. The whelp would need it. The snakes had enough time to become numerous and organized which did not bode well, even for one as powerful as Sesshomaru. He hated to admit it to himself, but he would need the aid if he was going to rid the ookami territory of the serpents. It would not do for him to become overwhelmed. His thoughts were interrupted by a sudden gulp. “If you empty your stomach on this Sesshomaru, girl, you will be dropped to the earth below.” Sesshomaru warned, looking down at the wolf female who was clutching her stomach with one hand and had the other clamped firmly over her mouth. She nodded her answer and screwed her eyes shut with a muffled groan. Sesshomaru indulged himself in an eye roll. If this was the only other assistance he was going to have outside the ookami Prince, he was going to be in trouble.“I’m so happy for you two, Lady Kagome. I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you mated with Kouga-sama!” Rin exclaimed happily while sitting on the floor of the Miko’s hut. Kagome blushed and smiled, glancing at her mate who looked incredibly pleased. “Thank you, Rin. I’m happy, too.” Kagome replied. “Yes, I agree with my betrothed. Congratulations, to you Kagome-sama and to you, Kouga-sama.” Kohaku said with a bow before joining the trio on the floor. “Thanks, kids, but what’s with this sama business? I’m just Kouga, no sama. I ain’t a Lord.” Kouga asked, baffled at the honorific attached to his name. “Oh, you’ve mated Lady Kagome, so therefore you’re to be referred to as Kouga-sama. Right?” Rin giggled lightly and looked to Kagome for affirmation. “That is the proper way, Rin. I’m glad to see you’ve been paying attention to my ramblings.” Kagome said with a light giggle of her own. “Still, I prefer to just be Kouga, no honorific attached.” Kouga continued. He felt a delicate hand pat him on the arm and looked to his woman with a smile. She returned it and shook her head. “Just let it be, Kouga. I’ve been saying the same thing for years. The girl just won’t give in, let me tell you.” Kagome advised sweetly. Kouga shrugged and took Kagome’s hand in his and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles. “Yeah, love, I guess you’re right. You don’t get raised by Lord Sesshomaru without learning to be relentless about how you properly address someone.” Kouga said with his signature smirk and they all laughed. “Oi, none of that damn mushy stuff, wolf. It’s bad enough you’re stinking up my home. I don’t need to be nauseous on top of it all.” InuYasha remarked when he entered the hut. “InuYasha, they’re in love. Be a little more understanding, my dear.” Aiko admonished following the hanyou through the doorway. InuYasha blushed at the endearment which caused a new eruption in in laughter. InuYasha’s mouth flew open, no doubt to give everyone a piece of his mind when Kagome sprang to her feet and lunged him. He rocked on his heels slightly before wrapping his arms around his best friend. “I thought you had gotten mad at me, InuYasha, ‘cause I mated Kouga. You’ve been gone for the past two days. I was so worried.” Kagome admitted into his fire rat haori. “Feh, Kagome, I can’t be mad at you for mating the flea bag. I know you love him, but listen here you wolf, if you ever hurt her I’ll kill you. Got me?” InuYasha declared with the most serious expression anyone had ever seen. InuYasha gave Kagome one last squeeze before pulling away and moving to the now standing Kouga. “You don’t have to worry about that, mutt. Just so you know, if I ever do something so stupid, I’ll come looking for you personally.” Kouga said just as seriously, offering his clawed hand to the hanyou. “I’ll hold you to that, baka.” InuYasha replied taking the proffered hand and giving it a firm shake, before pulling away and placing his arm around Aiko’s waist. “We’ve got an announcement to make of our own.” Aiko said. Everyone looked at the couple, waiting for Aiko to continue, while InuYasha busied himself with nuzzling her hair. She looked up at him with a smile and InuYasha, mirroring it, nodded his head in consent. “I’m pregnant. We’re having a pup!” Aiko all but screamed. Rin was on her feet in a heartbeat and had encircled the woman in her arms before Kagome could react. “Congratulations, Aiko, Master InuYasha!” Rin exclaimed before pulling away and giving Kagome a turn at the mother to be. “This is great. Way to go you guys. So does this mean you two are mated now?” Kagome said while hugging Aiko softly. “Uh, not exactly.” InuYasha answered sheepishly, his face beet red and his hand rubbing his neck. “So baka InuYasha’s having a pup. Poor kid.” Shippo stated solemnly while entering the hut and hopping onto Kouga’s shoulder. “Why you…” InuYasha growled shaking his fist at the kit. “Don’t ruin this moment for them, Shippo.” Kagome said sternly. “Yes, Mama. Sorry, InuYasha.” Shippo apologized with a bowed head. “Whatever, fur ball. Like I was saying, I gotta get permission from my dick wad half-brother before I can officially mate Aiko. Chain of command, ya know?” InuYasha explained. “I’m sure Lord Sesshomaru wouldn’t have the least bit of problem with you mating Aiko. She’s lovely.” Rin stated with finality. “Whatever you say, kid.” InuYasha said with a shrug and pulled Aiko closer to him. “Hey, Kouga, since you’re mated to my Mama now, does that mean I gotta call you Papa?” Shippo asked innocently. “You call me whatever you want, squirt.” Kouga replied while ruffling the kit’s hair. “Cool. So I guess you’re Papa now.” Shippo said with a nod. “Cool?” Kouga asked, quirking an eyebrow at Kagome, who covered her mouth and snickered. “It’s a word from my time. It means good.” Kagome said once her laughing died down. “Okay, but…” Kouga began with a smirk. Aiko, Kohaku, and Rin looked at the ridged frames of their companions in the hut with confusion. Kouga was the first to exit the hut, with Shippo hanging onto his shoulder by his armor. InuYasha and Kagome nipped at his heels. “What’s going on, InuYasha?” Aiko asked worried. “It’s Lord Ice Prick. He just flared his aura. Something’s up.” InuYasha explained, his hand on the hilt of Tetsusaiga. “He’s got Natsuki with him.” Kouga exclaimed after scenting the air. “What’s he doing with her?” Kagome asked in the same worried tone Aiko had used. “Best wait ‘til he gets here, Kagome. He’s near.” InuYasha answered. “How astute of you, little brother.” Sesshomaru stated when his feet set down on the dirt outside the hut. Natsuki broke out into a run when her feet hit solid earth and hid behind the hut. Everyone, except Kagome and Rin cringed at the sound of the female retching into the weeds. Rin disappeared into the hut and came out holding a rag and a bowl of the washing water Kagome had in her basin. “I’m going to help her. It’s good to see you, Sesshomaru-sama. I hope all is well.” Rin said with a nod of her head, her tone betraying her suspicions. “Rin.” Sesshomaru acknowledged with a slight incline of his own head. “Sesshomaru, you bastard, what are you doin’ here? Didn’t get enough fun outta beatin’ the shit outta me the other day?” InuYasha bellowed, tightening his grip on the hilt of his fang. “This Sesshomaru found an immense amount of pleasure showing you who your betters are, whelp. However, that is not why this One is here.” Sesshomaru answered emotionlessly. “The dens have been attacked, Kouga!” Natsuki yelled from behind them. They all turned to see her running up to her Alpha, her eyes wide with fear and a silent plea for relief from the anxiety that permeated her very being. “What the hell happened, Natsuki?!” Kouga bellowed grasping the female’s upper arms in his hands. The female’s resolve shattered and she began to sob. “Oh, Gods, it was terrible. The snake demons attacked two days ago. They killed many and captured the rest. They were executing anyone who stood up against them when I left. I ran, Kouga. Oh, I’m so sorry, but…but…” She blurted out through sobs. “What happened to Saburo, the Elders?” Kouga asked, desperation beginning to cloud his voice. “T…They were captured, strung up on a tree, but alive when I saw them last. Kouga, Ginta, he…” She couldn’t finish, only buried her face in her hands. Kagome slid her arms around her friend and broke the hold her mate had on the distraught girl. She rubbed her hair and back soothingly. “Everything’s going to be okay, I promise. We’ll fix this.” Kagome cooed. “I don’t understand. How the fuck could they have gotten the drop on us?” Kouga asked none too pleasantly. “It seems your kin were betrayed, Prince, by one called Hiroshi and another named Ayame.” Sesshomaru replied coolly. “That bitch! I love you, Kagome, but I gotta go. No time to waste.” Kouga said hurriedly, his anger spurring him into action. “There’s no way you’re going without me. Just give me a minute. ‘Yasha, don’t let him leave.” Kagome ordered, releasing the calming wolf and running into the hut to get her weapons. “This Sesshomaru will accompany you as well. There is a lesson that needs to be taught.” Sesshomaru said with a frightening smirk. “Yeah, me too. Don’t give me that look, ya mangy wolf. You ain’t takin’ Kagome into a battle without me and that’s final.” InuYasha chimed in. “I’m going, too. I’m not letting my Mama and Papa go into battle without me.” Shippo said, puffing his chest out. Sesshomaru quirked an eyebrow at the little kit’s words. Could it be the Miko and wolf Prince had mated during his absence? He took a tentative sniff of the air and confirmed that they had done just that. He focused his amber gaze on the wolf. It would seem that a small conversation would have to happen after this was all over. There were a few boundaries the wolf would need to heed if he was going to become the protector of something that belonged to this Sesshomaru. “Okay, got what I need. Let’s go.” Kagome exclaimed, pulling her bow up her shoulder and walking behind Kouga, who knelt to allow her to climb on his back. He secured his mate’s legs with his hands and she pulled Shippo into her embrace. InuYasha turned to his intended and embraced her, kissing her thoroughly without any hesitation. “I’ll be back, Aiko, don’t you worry. You and the pup need to rest. I…I love you.” InuYasha said kissing the pregnant woman’s forehead and blushing before speeding off after his brother, who had not waited for the others. Kouga, with Shippo and Kagome, left in a cyclone of dust. Natsuki gave the young girl, Rin a nod in thanks, but before she could leave, Kohaku stopped her. “I wish to go as well.” He stated simply, giving Rin’s hand a squeeze when she gasped in surprise. “You sure, kid? It’s not going to be pretty.” Natsuki asked skeptically. The boy merely nodded his head and gave Rin a light peck on the cheek. Natsuki kneeled and allowed the human boy to climb onto her back. Then she was off, kicking up dirt, as she pushed herself to catch up to their comrades.
AN: And off they go to kick some snake arse :P Like to thank Luminari_Lilium {I'm glad you liked the way the snakes appeared, figured it would kind of explain why they could never be exterminated to begin with :) }, Cathyrin {Hope you enjoy this chap :) }, and Ash {You are absolutely right. Thanks for giving it a second shot. :) } for their reviews and encouragement as always. I appreciate any feedback I get and appreciate those who read the story just as much. I hope it has been to everyone's enjoyment thus far. There's only a few chapters left and I'm going to try my very best to make them as action packed as possible. Until next time ~scattered-dimensions~
