Warning: There will be lemons in this story, some non-con as well.
(A/N: Finally, the long awaited appearance of Sesshomaru, however brief. From this point on, he will be showing up more frequently, and boy do I have plans for him. *Evil chuckle and thrums fingers together in front of face.*)
Chapter 21: Transgressions Discovered
Kagome was able to weasel away soon after Hojo unloaded his newest poor-health related gift and returned home quickly. She was stressing terribly about the little rectangular box she had tucked away in her bra to make sure no one would see it if they went snooping into her grocery bags, as Souta was prone to do. He did just as expected, making Kagome grateful she had thought ahead as she claimed the bathroom, locking the door behind her. Withdrawing the box and following its instructions, she waited on pins and needles for its life-altering answer to develop.
'One line, that means,' Kagome let out a huge sigh of relief, 'negative.' She sat down on the floor, just letting that stress leave her. 'That was a close call. I need to be more careful.'
After that, she made sure to go by a free clinic the next day and get on an oral birth control, just in case. Spending so much time in the past, who knows what will happen. She wasn't very keen on letting Naraku near her after what she just found out, and no one else had her interest, but she didn't want another scare like that. Better safe than sorry.
Another thing that confused her was by the time she was prepared to go back through the well, it had been a week since she had seen Naraku, and she still hadn't experienced a single withdrawal symptom. Prior, she got near inconsolable in less than five days. It didn't make sense. She was prepared for an internal battle to begin, but nothing happened; she felt completely normal.
These lands were crawling with them. They bred so prolifically and without restraint, rivaling the vermin that accompanied them everywhere they went, feeding off their wasteful habits. Habits made stronger by a greed so vile. This filth, he had tried at one time to eliminate them from a region, eradicate their species in his territory, but it all proved to be in vain, for more just moved in. They were persistent pests, these humans.
Their stench was enough to make him want to wrinkle his nose had he not been as refined as he was. In his entire life, there had only been two individuals, two humans that he did not lump into the same disdainful category. One padded along behind him with a permanent grin on her face, ever obedient, perpetually cheerful, and most important, flawlessly respectful. Little Rin, who knew not of demon customs, had managed to obtain that essential trait, derived from her adoration and near worship of the demon lord, Sesshomaru. He had not intended to have her follow him, but she did, and he found her company surprisingly pleasant.
There was only one other he did not regard as scum, and that was the only human to ever survive his attack, a solid attempt on her life, Kagome. The flea, Myoga, had assumed her survival was due to the fang she held up in defense, but he could see otherwise when she rose from the puddle of melted bone; she had survived due to her own power. It was a power she was not aware of, but it was present within her none-the-less. What a shame then, that her allegiance lie with one so undeserving, a mere half-breed, even if the mongrel shared his blood, he would never consider him a brother. This was not because of his lineage, however; like many believed, but because of his disrespectful actions. Sesshomaru had given the pup many opportunities to gain retribution, but each time he failed to understand the offer and let his stubbornness cause his beatings into submission.
Wandering across the land, searching leisurely wherever his senses led him, Sesshomaru was loyally followed by Rin, Jaken, and Ah-Un. He had caught a faint whiff of a very confusing scent and couldn't resist the curiosity it spurred in him. Part of the scent, he recognized as that strange and elusive half-demon, Naraku, that had lent him the human arm. A strange character that he had to admit was very cunning, but he would not hesitate to slay him for his minor insult should he ever cross paths with him. (A/N: This is before Sesshomaru decides Naraku's death is priority.) Another part of the scent, belonged to the Miko, Kagome, who was supposedly Inuyasha's woman, even though she had not been marked or claimed in any way last he saw her. How strange then that the scent of these two would be a so intimately intertwined, considering Naraku had wanted the girl's protector, Inuyasha, dead. It was potently obvious that there had been a mass of sexual activity in the area, but it was the circumstances to this encounter that he was inquisitive about. Stepping into a steamy clearing, Sesshomaru eyed the scene intensely. The hot-spring bubbled in the center, and all around it there was destruction. Boulders were crushed, trees were scarred and snapped, and the ground was saturated in all manner of bodily fluids, including blood.
"Ah, a hot spring!" Rin exclaimed excitedly as she started shimmying out of her kimono. She was quick to adopt the demon way of doing things and that included a lack of modestly.
"Rin," Sesshomaru called, "we are not here to bathe. This spring has been fouled."
Rin looked up in awe at her lord's keen senses and redressed quickly, "Yes, Mi'lord."
'By the look of things, this could have very well been a nonconsensual encounter, however, I would think Kagome to be strong enough that she should have been able to defend herself,' Sesshomaru deduced. 'I wish to know what has transpired here.' With that he turned towards the east, towards the human woman that repeatedly opposed him, and lived, as well as the impertinent pup he had the misfortune of sharing blood with.
Heaving herself out of the well and resting a moment on the wooden lip, Kagome took in the fresh, clean air of the feudal era. She was beginning to feel much more at home here than she ever had in the future. It was so tranquil, except for when a rogue demon was attacking.
"There you are!" Inuyasha bellowed. "I thought you said you were going to come back yesterday."
'Or when Inuyasha starts barking,' Kagome noted another not-so-tranquil occurrence with a smile. He may be annoying, but he was still a cherished member of her family on this side of the well.
More voices were heard soon after, "Kagome your back!" The little ball of orange fur barreled into her chest, nuzzling and nearly knocking her backwards into the well.
"Of course I'm back, Shippo," she reassured her adopted son. "I couldn't stay away too long. I'd miss you guys." She smiled up as Sango and Miroku entered the meadow as well. They all looked to be in high spirits and rearing to go.
That good mood didn't last long though, for as soon as they had taken to the dirt path to continue their search, a very elusory individual halted them. Sesshomaru rarely showed himself, as uncatchable as a forest spirit, unless he wanted something. Last time he had appeared, it was to test Inuyasha's strength in his 'full demon' form. The encounter could have easily turned deadly, but Sesshomaru simply incapacitated his crazed brother, allowing Kagome to reverse the transformation with Tessaiga.
Sesshomaru's sharp golden gaze scanned over each member of the strange group, paying special attention to Kagome's scent, aura, and mannerisms. Nothing appeared to have changed, making him all the more suspicious. Usually, if a woman undergoes such a brutal rape, she would have telltale signs of such an encounter. He couldn't scent any bruises or cuts on her body, nor was her aura darkened. He knew how to have his suspicions verified, and went about such process tactfully, "Where is Naraku?" He really couldn't care less where the spider was hiding, his intentions were to simply speak the name and watch for reactions to it. If the hanyou had raped Kagome, that name would spur unwanted memories, he would see and scent horror on the girl. If the others reacted with unbridled rage, it would indicate they knew of such transgressions.
"I thought you were supposed to have sharper senses than I," Inuyasha bit back, hand ready to unsheathe Tessaiga in an instant. "Why are you asking me?"
None of them showed such expected reactions however. Inuyasha was his typical, brusque self, the slayer and monk stood back and looked perhaps curious, and Kagome, she showed no signs of distress. It was blatantly obvious she had been completely willing to bed her enemy. 'Perhaps, I misjudged her character,' he mused disdainfully.
"Hn, as is obvious," he remarked, disappointed in Inuyasha once again, this time for failing to detect such betrayal. "I would be wary of the company you keep, Inuyasha; humans are prone to betrayal."
Kagome had been rather wary the first moment Sesshomaru's piercing gaze fell on her, feeling like he was analyzing something, and this last sentence hung heavily in her mind. She recognized immediately that he was referring to her, and her alone. Her eyes went wide with panic, unknowingly confirming his conjecture, as she fretted, 'He knows! He knows about my sleeping with Naraku! Oh no, is he going to tell, is he going to kill me, what do I do?'
Miroku found this whole encounter strange, usually Sesshomaru came to try and take Tessaiga or try to kill Inuyasha, but this time, it almost seemed as if he was giving him a genuine warning.
None of the others notice anything though, especially Inuyasha who only took his brother's words as his perpetual hatred for humans, "Just because you hate humans doesn't mean all of them are bad, Sesshomaru." Sesshomaru could tell it was useless to try and talk to the pup, he would just have to learn the hard way. "Now, I find it hard to believe that that is all you came to say."
Without a word, Sesshomaru turned and walked back into the forest, disappearing just as mysteriously as he appeared. He would not kill the girl, it was not his place since her insult was towards Inuyasha more so than himself; it was Inuyasha's right to take her life, not his.
"That was strange," Inuyasha remarked. "What's his problem anyways?"
Out of all of them, Miroku seemed to be the only one to give Sesshomaru's words and purpose any thought, other than Kagome of course, seeing as she knew exactly what he was referring to. He wouldn't speak his thought out yet, seeing as he was still just as confused as the rest, but whereas they chose to just dismiss the encounter, Miroku let the events replay in his mind, storing them for a later time in which he may come to understand their significance.
The room was dark, no light could breach the thick clouds of miasma that swirled and swelled within a concealed barrier. From the outside, it looked to be no more than an open meadow, but inside was a sea of poisonous air that killed any living thing that lacked the demonic strength to resist. The human servants that had dwelled here had long since been dead, and now their clothes and bones had disintegrated into nothing but the stench of death. In the far room, a lone figure stared out the bleak window in thought from his seated position on the floor. He knew he needed to become stronger, but that would take time; a prolonged period of weakness in which to accumulate and meticulously organize the strengths of countless demons to his advantage. During such periods, he learned from experience that he could not maintain a barrier strong enough to continue to evade detection. Last cycle, both Inuyasha and Kouga had gotten far too close. A barrier would have to be maintained by another if he wished to remain hidden and safe during this lengthy process. That is why he sought out Saint Hakushin, and offered him life in exchange for services. He would vanish into this hiding place when the time was right.
There was one other possibility, one that would accelerate this goal exponentially. If he were to acquire the powers of a complete demon, such as Sesshomaru, he would no longer have a need to absorb masses of mindless, lesser, demons to gain power. Defeating Sesshomaru, however, would not be an easy task, and it would be very likely that he would get defeated. He would need a plan to prevent Sesshomaru from hunting him down; a plan to escape. But what would be a strong enough ploy to redirect the demon lord's wrath? That human child perhaps, but in order to test that theory, he'd need to perform a test. Nothing would be left up to chance.
(A/N: Spoiler alert! Episodes 73-74, where Inuyasha gains the Red Tessaiga.)
"Growling suits you a lot better than thinking," Shippo remarked, seeing Inuyasha lost in thought after their most recent victory, which then triggered another bought of playful squabbling between the two.
They had met a half-demon girl by the name of Shiori, a half-demon with the power to erect an impenetrable barrier. After freeing Shiori from her cruel grandfather, and returning her to her mother, she handed over the orb that housed her power and allowed Inuyasha to break it. This gave Tessaiga the power to break barriers, called the Red Tessaiga. They were now on their way to the vicinity that they last knew Naraku's castle to be hidden.
Looking back, it was clear Shiori and her mother would have many trials, but with as resilient as they have proved to be thus far, the group knew they would be all right. After all, Inuyasha was a half-demon too, and he turned out… okay.
"Huh, what's the matter, Kagome?" Inuyasha asked after seeing her strange smile, fearing he was going to be sat for fighting with Shippo.
"Good boy," Kagome smiled wider as she pet his head like a dog.
Sesshomaru and his entourage walked on continuously; wherever their destination lay, Rin had no idea but followed along happily, just glad to be with the one she idolized. This was her idea of a perfect day, nothing special, not needing much, just being in the comforting presence of her lord. Every now and then she would feel his immense demonic aura pulse, Jaken had explained it was a warning and declaration for challenge to any who would wish to come forward. All she noticed was how comforting it was, making her feel eternally safe.
Glancing down to the forest floor, she suddenly saw something she didn't often find, "Wild strawberries!" She quickly stopped to pick the sweet berries, shoving them into her mouth.
"Hurry up, Girl," Jaken squawked, walking with his head turned and not paying attention where he was going. He realized said mistake when he ran smack into Sesshomaru's leg and stumbled backwards.
"Jaken," his firm voice sent foreboding chills down the little demon's spine, "leave her be." Jaken began groveling pathetically, not understanding why his lord would allow a human child to follow him in the first place.
Sesshomaru didn't really know why he allowed her to follow, except that she had yet to annoy him. Humans were notorious for their lack of survival skills and quick tendencies to rely on others, but Rin had proven to be phenomenally self-reliant. If she had asked him to provide for her he would have immediately left her in a human village and been on his way, but she hadn't. She tended to her own needs without the slightest bit of expectation of him.
Sesshomaru settled down against a tree to allow her all the time she needed to satisfy her hunger. He honestly had no destination in mind and was just wandering for the sake of it. He had been over these lands many times before, and they changed very little between visits. He was in no hurry; he had all the time in the world.
Rin continued her harvest, wandering further and further away, jumping from one plant to another, oblivious to what was waiting for her until it emerged with a snarl. The demon was not very formidable, but plenty strong enough to harm a small girl.
Sesshomaru caught the scent of her fear at the same time as her ear-piercing scream and sprung into action immediately. A half-second later and the demon was sliced clean in half before it even had a chance to strike. How odd that such a weak demon could have its scent and aura completely masked. It was most likely a pawn, but then, who was the puppet master. He felt a strange sensation, as if he was being watched, but before he could attempt to pinpoint from where or whom, it vanished.
Watching from Kanna's mirror, Naraku chuckled at the scenario he had just contrived. Just as he thought, Sesshomaru had some kind of obligation to the girl's safety, making her the perfect bait to manipulate the arrogant demon lord. His pride and haughtiness made him very predictable, and this new weakness he'd acquired, would be the means in which Naraku would ensure his escape if his primary plan fails.
(A/N: Ok, I've gotten a little stuck and need help to get passed this roadblock. This is quite a ways ahead, like Ch. 25/26, but what should I do about the events of episode 104-107, where Kagome, Sango, and Miroku get poisoned and almost die from both Mukotsu's poison and Renkotsu's fire? I could go with the easy way out and say Naraku was asleep during this quick succession of events, or that Kanna assured him they would live; or try to explain it out and change those episodes slightly. I really don't want to spend a lot of time on this area, I'm in just as much a hurry as you guys are to get her back to interacting with Naraku. Opinions?)
