InuYasha sat outside in one of the chairs from Kagome’s and looked at the sacred tree before turning his attention to the wooden cradle standing on its end atop a blanket. He closed his eyes and channeled his youki into his claws and began to carve. He was going to find and bring her home and when he did he wanted her to see that he hadn’t given up, that he had kept on believing they would be together again, with their pup no matter what.
He lost track of time as he worked and it was only the fading of the light making it harder to see that drew him back into the real world. He wasn’t done, but he was satisfied with how it looked so far. He picked up the cradle and the blanket and headed inside. He set it on the kitchen table and then just walked through the house, letting himself feel her and trying to ignore how much her scent had faded from within its walls.
He went into her bedroom where her scent was still the strongest and lay down on the bed. The youkai in him could find no peace as long as she and their pup were missing. He looked up at the ceiling and wondered what she was thinking, if she knew how much he was missing her, how worried her was about her. Was she getting enough to eat? Was she warm and as safe as it was possible for her to be considering the fucked up circumstances?
How much bigger was she now? He closed his eyes and tried to picture her, belly swollen with their pup and imagined being able to run his hand over her, hearing the heartbeat and feeling the tiny kicks that were surely strong enough now to be felt on the outside. He was missing so much and he dreaded even more the idea that he might miss the birth of his child. He hoped that she wasn’t afraid that she had faith in him and knew that he would never stop looking for her, that he would never give up until she was safely back in his arms.
If only he and the monk were making any kind of progress with the scrolls, it would have been easier to bear, but they hadn’t found anything yet that seemed even remotely useful. Then there was the fact that he couldn’t even get angry with the monk for not being able to work with him very often since the only reason he was so busy was because he was protecting Kagome’s interests with her people.
He growled a little. How dare they be so disloyal to her, try to count her as lost so easily after all that she had done for them? How many of them might be dead by now had she not worked so hard to bring peace? She deserved better. He sighed and closed his eyes, only to have them snap open as his phone vibrated in his pocket.
It was Sesshomaru.
“Yo. Tell me got something.”
“Not what you are hoping,” Sesshomaru replied quietly. “There has been an outbreak of youkai on human violence. I am on my way to a lesser youkai swarm reeking havoc in Ginza and I need you to head to a hostage situation in Shibuya at the New National Theater where they were hosting a special performance by elementary students.”
“Sesshomaru, I-” he tried.
“What would your miko want you to do?” his brother cut in. “You are the only one I can trust to handle the situation there.”
InuYasha knew he was right. Kagome would want him to go save those children, no matter what. In fact even if someone had called and told him exactly where she was right now, she would still want him to go to the kids first.
“Okay, I’ll head that way right now,” he said with a sigh. “Any idea what I’m going to be looking at?”
“None,” Sesshomaru replied. “Watch yourself, little brother.”
“Yeah, you too,” he said.
He ended the call, shoved his phone in his pocket and took off out the window.

Kagome closed her eyes and moved to the music. It wasn’t really the right kind of song for a traditional kagura dance, but she also wasn’t doing any of the dances she had performed as a brand new fully qualified miko either. The movements were similar and in some cases the same as those she had practiced hours on end before starting to take part in the dances at the shrine celebrations, but the order of them and the tempo were all her own.
The familiar forms and motions brought her peace and it was also good exercise that didn’t put too much strain on her body now that she actually looked pregnant. She didn’t know if it was because the baby was hanyou or because of the shorter length of the pregnancy, but she felt like it was taking more of a toll on her than you would normally expect. Though, she had to admit that much of that could have to do with the stress and uncertainty of her situation.
It was dark outside, but time really didn’t mean much to her at this point. She spent much of her time sleeping anymore. At least her captor didn’t make it a point to visit her frequently. Just the thought of him made her skin crawl. She sighed and went over to the radio turning it off. It only depressed her now when the news came on. No longer did the search for her rate anything more than a brief mention that she’s hadn’t been found and the hotline number.
Deep down she knew it didn’t matter if she was still headline news. She knew in her heart that InuYasha and Miroku would never be convinced to stop looking, but it was still a little depressing. She could only hope that they could somehow keep the peace going in her stead. At least so far there had been no new reports of violence between her people and the youkai, even if there did seem to be a disturbing amount of rogue youkai activity lately.
She supported her belly with one hand as she went over to the futon to sit down. Never more did she miss her bed at home when she was struggling to get up and down of the thin mattress on the floor, especially when she really had to pee. She felt a kick against her hand and smiled. It also comforted her that small proof that her baby seemed to be doing just fine in spite of their circumstances. She wanted vitamins and a midwife, but had neither and so she had to take what she could get.
She rubbed her belly. “Just keep growing in there, okay. Daddy will come for us just as soon as he can. I know he’s missing us.”
The door opened and a youkai woman she had never seen before appeared. She was dressed traditionally and had the most striking magenta eyes. There was also a sort of hopelessness in them that she had to fight very hard not to feel sympathy towards. She set two bags of groceries on the table.
“You are a fool to hope,” the woman said. “Your child will be his and then he will kill you, if you are lucky. If you are not then he will possess you as well.” She shuddered. “If you are wise you will pray for a quick death, miko.”
“If you really feel that way then why are you helping him,” Kagome tried. Perhaps this woman could be made an ally. “You could leave, go to the youkai no taishou. If you let me escape he would definitely help you.”
“You know nothing,” she replied. “There is no escape for either one of us. The youkai no taishou will die, just like the rest who refuse to join him.”
Kagome watched the youkai woman leave with a frown. She was definitely an unwilling participant in all this and seemed so hopeless so resigned to her fate that it was impossible not to wish she could do something to help, even though that was a ridiculous notion considering her own situation. Maybe if the woman returned she could continue to try and reach out to her, to convince her that they could get away together. She could tell her about the shrine and how she would be safe there. Surely it would be worth a try at least. It was the first real chance that had been presented to her since she had been taken and she owed it to her baby to at least try and take it.

The scene at the New National Theater was chaotic to say the least. He showed his ID to a unit of the special police and then headed for the heart of the activity inside the cordoned off area. He was trying to find whoever was in charge so that he could coordinate with them when he heard a familiar male voice cry out.
“No!”
He spun to see the monk knocking aside the bow of an unfamiliar miko with his shakujo. His lips curled upwards. The miko was obviously both and idiot and a coward to have planned to shoot him in the back against the orders of the truce. He wondered if maybe things weren’t worse on that side than the bouzo was letting on to have done something so blatant and in public no less.
“Arrest her,” Miroku said to one of the special police. “She attempted to violate the treaty in the most grievous and dishonorable way. An example must be made.”
“Miroku-sama,” the miko gasped. “But he is youkai. He is probably working with the one who has those poor children. For all we know he killed Kagome-miko-sama himself.”
“Fucking idiot,” InuYasha snorted. “The youkai no taishou ordered me here to help, the fucking great miko trusts me with her life and you think I’d have anything to do with hurting defenseless pups? You’re lucky I don’t ask you be handed over to the youkai no taishou since the great miko is missing and can’t deal with you herself.”
“It would be within your rights,” Miroku offered.
The miko looked at them both with wide terrified eyes and InuYasha rolled his. “Sesshomaru has enough shit to deal with. Besides the great miko wouldn’t want that and I unlike some people believe she will be found and will respect her wishes. Just get her the hell out of here.”
The miko was taken away and Miroku sighed heavily. “Perhaps word of this will spread and buy us a bit more time. Whether or not it was something you considered, you might have just helped me a great deal in keeping them in line a little longer.”
InuYasha glanced at the man beside him. “You should have told me how desperate things are getting on your end.”
“Perhaps,” Miroku admitted. “But you are barely keeping it together. We need to save these children, you and I working together.”
“How do you want to do this?” InuYasha asked. “You have any idea who or what to expect?”
“I know they believe there are twenty two children still inside and at least three youkai,” Miroku told him. “No one was able to give a clear picture of what type of youkai they might be or of what abilities they may have. All of emergency exits have been locked down and the front entrance is guarded.”
InuYasha looked at the building. “Then we go in from above. You aren’t afraid of heights are you, bouzo?”
“How do you intend for me to get up there?” Miroku asked not sure he wanted to know the answer.
InuYasha smirked. He grabbed the monk and tossed him over his shoulder. He ignored his startled cry and his protests and made his way onto the roof with several deft leaps. He dropped him unceremoniously. “That answer your question?”
Miroku scowled at him once he was back on his feet. “Was that really necessary?”
“No, but it was fun,” InuYasha replied. “When we go in I want your priority to be the kids. You can protect them with a barrier if you have to right?” Miroku nodded. “Good then I’ll try to keep the attention of the youkai. If you see a chance to get them out go for it and don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.”
InuYasha went over to the rooftop door and jerked it open, breaking the lock and nearly tearing the door from its hinges. He crept silently down the stairs and pressed his ear to the second door. He didn’t hear anything so he opened the door slowly and looked around, taking several deep breaths. A soft growl escaped him.
“Cats,” he growled. “I fucking hate cats and something else. I’m getting five separate scents and five different youki.”
Miroku closed his eyes for a moment. “I am detecting five as well.”
“Okay, monk here we go,” InuYasha said. “Follow my lead and remember don’t worry about me. Just get the kids out of here.”
They walked silently over to the edge of the balcony and ducked down. InuYasha lifted his head over the side just enough to get a look around. The kids were all huddled together in the center of the stage. Three panther youkai were standing around them. He knew another was guarding the front which only left one unaccounted for. His lip curled up in a snarl.
“Wait here,” InuYasha said his voice barely a whisper. “I’m going to go take out the one guarding the front entrance and hopefully spot the fifth. I’ll come back and we’ll go down together. I’ll get the three with the kids away from them and then you can make your move.”
Miroku nodded and he headed for the nearest stairs. He stayed low keeping his youki tightly under control and his other senses spread wide. It wouldn’t be long before they picked up his scent and he wanted to keep the element of surprise. Once he was on the ground floor he followed the signs to the main entrance. He chanced a glance around the corner and saw the stupid feline who was looking far too smug and only focused on what was going on outside. Perfect.
He channeled his youki into his claws and then made his move. The asshole cat didn’t even have time to wonder what had happened before he looked down and to see a hand holding his heart sticking out the front of his chest. InuYasha dropped the organ and pulled his hand free, wiping it on his pants as the youkai fell dead to the floor. He didn’t see any sign of the fifth youkai so he made his way back up to where he had left the monk.
Miroku looked at his hand and his pants and held up four fingers. InuYasha nodded and then led the way to the back set of stairs that would put them out closest to the stage. He pointed at the floor and held up both his hands raising each finger one at a time. The monk nodded and InuYasha hoped he understood that he was supposed to count to ten before he headed down so that they wouldn’t smell him or feel his reiki before he was ready for them to know someone was coming. He took a deep breath and then leapt over the side of the balcony landing lightly on one of the floor seats.
“Hey assholes, how about you give up now and I’ll kill you quick,” InuYasha called.
“How the hell did he get in here?” one of the panthers demanded.
“Shit, that’s the youkai no taishou’s half breed brother,” another said. “I thought he was supposed to be out of commission.”
“It doesn’t matter,” the third snapped. “He’s just a damn half dog. You two take care of him.”
InuYasha swore to himself. He’d wanted to draw away all three of them at once and to make matters worse he could feel the fifth youkai somewhere nearby. Oh well, he was used to doing things the hard way and surely the monk was a match for one puny cat. He flexed his claws and his lip curled up in a snarl as they two mangy felines approached him. They had no idea who they were messing with.
The first lunged at him and he flipped backwards, wanting to draw them further away from the stage before engaging them. The moved with the typical grace of their kind but neither one seemed particularly fast nor did they have particularly powerful youki. Even three on one they would have been no match for him.
He dodged as one of the swiped at him with protracted claws just as the monk appeared throwing and ofuda at the panther still hovering menacingly over the children. The cry of pain that followed distracted his would be attackers who both turned just in time to see their friend rendered unconscious and immobile with a final fierce swing of the monk's shakujo and the application of a second ofuda.
Using the moment to his advantage InuYasha willed his youki into his claws and obliterated one of the cats with his sankontessou. It was completely unsatisfying as the last fish breathed asshole just stood there with wide disbelieving eyes as InuYasha finished him off. He didn’t know how on earth anyone would have thought these incompetent bastards would be able to pull off something like this. He wiped his hands on his pants and headed for the stage where Miroku was gathering up the children to lead them outside.
He frowned at the youki he could still feel and at the strange stink coming from amongst the children. He did a quick count of the kids and came up with twenty three, which could just mean their intel was wrong but he didn’t think so. Then a little boy wearing a hood turned his cold purple eyes towards him and smiled. He didn’t have time to hesitate, throwing himself at the little bastard as he released some sort of shouki, knocking him away from the kids and the monk.
He choked and his skin and eyes burned. “Shit, bouzo, barrier now!”
“Why do you care so much about these insignificant humans?” the creepy little shit asked.
InuYasha glanced back relieved to see the shining blue barrier protecting the kids from the poison in the air. He hoped the monk had enough power to give him time to finish off this strange smelling youkai who looked like a child but was clearly not.
“So I take it you are the mastermind behind this little plan,” InuYasha snorted. “Fucking brilliant.”
“No, I merely serve a greater power,” he replied. “He will not be pleased that you interfered, hanyou. Perhaps he will even take out his anger at your interference on someone precious to you.”
InuYasha’s eyes widened. “Tell me who this master of yours is and where he’s keeping her and I promise to kill you quick. Otherwise I’m going to make you wish you were dead.”
The boy smiled though it held no trace of warmth or joy. “Give up hanyou, she is lost to you as is the filth she carries in her womb.”
InuYasha charged the little fucker with a snarl and only managed to change direction just in time to avoid being impaled by the naginata he seemed to have pulled out of his ass. He hissed as it sliced him across the ribs. This kid was really starting to piss him off. More than that he knew something about Kagome. He really needed Miroku to get the kids out of here so that he could fight without worrying about them getting caught in the crossfire, even with the monk’s barrier in place it was too risky There was nothing to be done for it. He would have to try to go on the offensive and push the bastard back away from the kids.
He snarled and leapt forward with a slash of his claws. The little creep blocked his attack with the blade of his naginata but also jumped back away from him and further from the children, which was his real goal. He slipped his hand under his arm and threw it out sending his hijinkessou flying outwards. Most of the blades missed but to his great satisfaction a line of blood appeared on a pasty while cheek. The youkai in him wanted more, wanted to bathe in it, but only after the little shit told him where their mate was.
The boy wiped his cheek with his hand. “You cut me! You filthy mongrel. I’m going to gut you and bring your head to my master!”
InuYasha just smirked as the youkai laughed darkly inside him. This fucker had no idea who he was messing with. “Fat chance, asshole. I’m going to tear you apart, but not before you tell me everything you know about this master of yours and where he’s keeping her!”
He pressed his attack, dodging the naginata, blocking it when he could and ignoring it any time the blade managed to graze him. He let the youkai as close to the surface as he dared, because in this they were one mind, one heart. They would work together in perfect harmony to get back the one thing in their life that really mattered. He roared as he landed a solid blow and followed it with a rake of his claws that had the sleeve of the bastard’s hooding rapidly turning red.
The pale faced freak looked at his arm as it hung limply at his side, the tear in his jacket revealing rent skin and muscle all the way down to the bone.
“Keh, not such a big talker now are you!” InuYasha taunted. “Tell me where she is and I’ll kill you quick. Otherwise I’m going to take you apart one piece at time until you do.”
“I think not half breed,” the kid told him as some sort of barrier sprang to life around him.
InuYasha screamed in fury as he slashed at it with his claws. “You little shit! Tell me where she is!”
The boy smirked at him. “This has grown tiresome. We will meet again.”
InuYasha wanted to chase after him as he somehow blew a hole in the roof and floated away through it, but a sharp cry of his name from Miroku had him turning back with a snarl. He hurried over to the monk and together they led the kids outside all thankfully unharmed. It would be a good long time before he could forgive the bouzo for reminding him that the priority was the kids because that was what Kagome would have wanted.
They were immediatly swarmed by rescue crews and reporters who had managed to sneak inside the cordoned off area around the theater. He shooed away the paramedics trying to treat him. His wounds would heal in hours.
“Please, what can you tell us about what happened inside?” a reported asked.
He was about to tell her to fuck off when he realized that there was a chance no matter how small that Kagome might get a message from him by way of the television or radio. He looked right into the camera. “Nothing, but I’ve got a message for the great miko and the scumbag who took her and thought to make hostages of these kids.”
“Wait! You mean you know for certain that the person behind today’s horrific events and the abduction of the great miko are one in the same?” she prompted.
“One of the youkai holding those kids prisoner admitted that they were working for someone else and that he was the one holding the great miko,” InuYasha said.
“Oh my! And what is your message?” she asked.
Kagome sighed and pushed herself on to her feet. The silence was almost deafening and she just couldn't stand it. She’d just have to deal with the way she had become an after thought in the news reports. She clicked on the knob and laughed without humor as the first thing she heard was a reminder of the breaking news at the New National Theater.“The latest reports we are getting are that all of the children have been rescued safely. It appears that it was a joint effort as the children were seen being escorted out of the building by a man in the robes of a monk, who I am told is Sasaki Miroku right hand of the still missing great miko and what is believed at this time to be the younger brother of the youkai no taishou himself.”
Kagome’s heart clenched in her chest. InuYasha.
“It seems that we have new information on that front as well. It is being reported that the person behind the hostage situation with these children is also the one who has abducted the great miko. Of course we can only speculate at this time as to what his motivations might be. I’m being told now that we have an audio clip from an interview on scene at the New National Theater. I’m going to play that for you all now.”
Her hands were shaking as she strained to hear every word.
“I want to tell the great miko that we will find her, that we will never stop looking for her, never. And to the one who took her. There is no where you can hide, no hole deep enough for you to crawl into that will keep me from finding you and making sure you can never hurt anyone again. I will hunt you to the ends of the earth if I have to and I will see you punished for your crimes.”
The audio clip ended and she wished they would play it again so that she might hear his voice one more time. She wiped the tears from her cheeks. There had been so much in his tone that he hadn’t said, couldn’t say, but she’d heard it just as clearly as if he had. He loved her. He was going to find her and he would never give up on her, not ever. He was still looking for her and he now had at least some small idea of who had taken her and it was all connected to the rise in rogue and lesser youkai activity.
She placed her hands on her belly and could feel her baby moving inside her. “Did you hear that? That was your Daddy and he’s coming for us. We just have to be brave a little longer.”
She went back to the futon to lie down, but left the radio on, vowing never to turn it off on the slight chance that she would be able to hear his him again. She closed her eyes and could almost hear him, his determination and his love and she held those feelings close to her heart. He would come.
“Please, let him come.”
