Chapter 220 - The Bodies
Xerampelinae - dark red garments (Stella's Latin Challenge)"How do you want to handle this, Sango?" Kagome asked. "Do you think he'll wake up?""I don't know," the slayer replied softly, "but I think it's better if he doesn't. I don't want him to be in pain when you remove she shard.""This Sesshoumaru can attempt to revive him with the Tenseiga," the taiyoukai offered."No, I don't want him to have to remember everything that he's done. He doesn't need to live with that guilt. He's been dead a long time now. Only the shard is keeping him alive." She had thought long and hard about this moment, and she decided that it was better if she just let her brother go. He deserved to rest in peace and not be forced to live with everything he had been made to do by Naraku. He killed his father, and their entire village. How could he possibly go on with that knowledge?"Let me know what you want me to do," Kagome said, her heart aching for her friend.Sango knelt beside her brother and leaned in close to his ear. "I forgive you, Kohaku. They all forgive you. I hope you can find peace in your next life," she whispered. Then she rolled him to the side and gave Kagome a nod. "Do it."Kagome nodded her agreement and with tears in her eyes, she bent and plucked the shard from Kohaku's back. They all watched as wounds began to appear all over his body, staining his clothing a dark red. Every time he was injured, the jewel had healed him, but that healing was only temporary, and now that the shard was no longer in his body, they were reappearing. Moments later, Kohaku took his last, shuddering breath before he went still. His chest no longer rose and fell, and Sango turned away, unable to look at her little brother in such a condition. The miko found a somewhat tattered blanket hanging from a clothesline between two huts and covered the young boy's body. Sango thanked her quietly, clinging to Miroku, fighting back tears."You'll want to bury him in the slayer's village?" Kagome asked."Yes," Sango said, sucking up as much of her emotional strength as she could muster. "But after we've buried the villagers here.""Aww, come on," Inuyasha whined. The bodies were rotting and half-eaten, and he had no interest in touching them.Hiems - winter, the cold of winter, stormy weather, storm (Stella's Latin Challenge)"It is the right thing to do," Miroku said sagely. "Their souls will be unable to rest if they are left in this condition, eaten by scavengers."Kagome nodded her agreement, and Sesshoumaru murmured his, as well. He didn't like the idea any more than the hanyou, but it was the honorable thing to do, and he was an honorable demon."At least we'll have the right supplies," Inuyasha said, finally giving in. He knew when he was outnumbered and overruled. The hanyou looked around for a few minutes until he found three shovels.Though spring was approaching, the ground was still frozen solid, and only those with demon blood could dig successfully. Kirara helped the inu brothers as much as possible, digging holes right alongside them. The women set out to wrap the bodies in whatever bedding they could find. Kagura helped by forcing fresh air into the huts so that the smell wasn't as bad as it would have otherwise been. The wind witch even helped Kagome and Sango carry the wrapped bodies out of the huts, placing them in the ready graves.Miroku did his part by filling in the graves and blessing them, one by one. It was a tiring and heart-wrenching task, but he spoke the same words over and over again, blessing the souls of the departed, and wishing them safe passage to the next life.It took the group a day and a half, but eventually the task was completed, and the main road of the village was lined with dozens of graves. Soon after they finished, Sango and Miroku set out with Kohaku's body, ready to bury the boy in the village of his birth. The others set up camp for the night, planning on heading back to the palace in the morning. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
