Chapter 222 - The Wolf
Their Aspirations (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge 2)
Kagura wasn't sure what to do with herself. She was really and truly free. She survived the final battle, and her master was dead. Now what? She spent so much time just praying for freedom that now she had no idea what to do with it. She had never really expected to make it this far. She had always believed that Naraku would kill her. To have survived him and played a part in his demise was a gift.
Unsure of what her future held, the wind witch was traveling to the Western Palace with the others. Kagome had invited her to stay with them, and for now, she would. She still had no idea how to get her heart back into her chest, but she was certain that it was safe where she left it, so she chose not to dwell on that particular question. Instead, she was thinking as she flew alongside the taiyoukai, who carried the miko on his youki cloud. What could she do with her life? What did she want from life? She had no earthly idea.
Inuyasha was leaping from tree to tree, trying to keep up with his elder half-brother, who was flying rather quickly. The hanyou knew Sesshoumaru was eager to get Kagome back to the palace, but this was getting ridiculous. With a snarl, Inuyasha leapt to the ground, skidding to a stop. He hollered to Sesshoumaru that he needed a break, and the taiyoukai, carrying his precious package, and Kagura landed.
"I offered to carry you on my feather," Kagura reminded the hanyou.
"I ain't flying with you. Free will or not, you were still an enemy." Inuyasha hadn't been thrilled when the wind witch was invited to join them at the palace. He still didn't fully trust Kagura, but it took him a long time to trust anyone. She wasn't taking it personally. She had attacked him and his pack more times than she could count. She couldn't blame him for holding a grudge. She was well aware that Sesshoumaru wouldn't have invited her along either. She was welcome only because Kagome said so.
The miko gasped suddenly and wrapped her hand around the chuck of the jewel that hung around her neck. Her other hand covered her pocket where Naraku's half and Kohaku's shard remained. She was wary of joining the pieces together before she got to go home and explain things to her mother. Yes, Kouga still had his shards, and that was what she was sensing.
"Aww, damn it. Can't I catch a fucking break?" Inuyasha muttered as he spotted the trademark whirlwind of dust in the distance that signified the wolf's approach, though it was made more of snow than dust at the moment.

"Kagura," Kagome said softly. "Be careful. Kouga hates you."
And he did. The wolf had not forgotten when Kagura slaughtered more than half his pack before reanimating them to try and trick the wolf and the Inuyasha into fighting each other. He had sworn then that he would take her head, and he meant it. He didn't know that she hadn't acted of her own free will, and he wouldn't have cared if he did. She had the blood of his brothers on her hands and for that, he believed, she deserved to die.
Kouga came to a stop directly in front of Kagome and had her hands in his in seconds. "How's my woman?" he asked, breathing her scent in deeply. As soon as her scent hit his nose, he snarled as he jerked backwards in shock. "You're mated!" he declared loudly.
"I am," the miko said softly. "To Lord Sesshoumaru," she continued, hoping that the wolf would realize that her mate was a great deal stronger than him. She didn't want a huge confrontation, and she definitely didn't want them fighting. She was still exhausted, though her enhanced healing had taken care of the soreness, and she was in no mood to deal with posturing men.
"But... But you're my woman."
Sesshoumaru snarled viciously, stepping forward to wrap his arm possessively around the miko's waist. "Kagome is my mate," he said, his tone clearly leaving no room for argument.
"I laid claim to her years ago!" the wolf hollered. "You stole her from me!"
Kagome sighed heavily. "Kouga, look, I told you over and over that I had no interest in mating you. You just refused to hear me. Besides, there are more important things to talk about. Naraku is dead."
"Oh, so you're mated, and you killed Naraku without me? And what the fuck is that bitch doing here?" he demanded, finally noticing Kagura's presence.
"Kagura is with us. She helped us defeat Naraku."
"Good for her," he muttered darkly. His heart was broken, having lost his desired mate to a much stronger male. He knew he could never best Sesshoumaru if he tried to challenge him for Kagome. She was really and truly lost to him. Anger, however, was much easier to feel at the moment than pain, and so he focused on the woman who had murdered his men. "You and I have some unfinished business."
"No!" Kagome exclaimed as Kouga began to stalk towards Kagura. She slipped out of Sesshoumaru's hold and threw herself between the two youkai. "She didn't do anything on her own. Naraku forced her to do it. It's not her fault!"
"She slaughtered my pack, and you say it's not her fault?" Kouga yelled in Kagome's face, making Sesshoumaru come to her defense.
"The wind witch is under this Sesshoumaru's protection. You will not harm her."
Kouga snarled. "You would deny me retribution for the lives of my men, my brothers, my pack?!"
"I would, and I will," Sesshoumaru said coldly. He glanced at Inuyasha, who quickly came to his side to drag Kagome away. She didn't need to be in the middle of what was about to happen.
