Cats and Dogs
Manifest
Inuyasha sighed nervously, “See? Now do you understand why I never liked
Kagome going back to her time? This
is what happens! And now Riquo got dragged into this!”
“I wouldn’t worry too
much about it Inuyasha, Riquo can take care of herself,” Miroku said.
”That’s not the problem.”

Everyone turned to
look at Kouga, his eyes downcast and fixated on the crystal ball in the middle
of the floor.
“Coral snake demons,
especially poisonous ones, are extremely dangerous. They fight in large groups
and if one bites you you’re pretty much screwed. Riquo would have to take
drastic measures to defeat all of them, and since Kagome's abilities are
useless…they don’t have a chance,” Kouga said, slowly standing.
Sango frowned and
stood, reaching for her boomerang. There
is no way in hell I’m letting Riquo and Kagome get beat like that.
“Put down your weapon
woman, you wouldn’t do any good,” Inuyasha snorted.
“You really should
stay Lady Sango, it’s pointless to risk your life as
well.”
“Yea
Sango! I wouldn’t want you to
get hurt either! You’re the only that keeps Inuyasha from being mean to me!”
Shippo said, then stuck his tongue out at Inuyasha.
“Why you little…!”
“I’M GOING AND THAT’S
FINAL!!”
The entire hut was
silent. Hell, the whole village shut up for that one. Miroku, Inuyasha and
Kouga all stared at her wide eyed as she fumed. Shippo flew behind Kaede, who
was a bit surprised as well at Sango’s outburst.
“I’m
am sick of this whole damsel in
distress nonsense. Keep your eyes on that crystal ball and you’ll see us
women take care of a battle for once without testosterone trying to dominate
and be the hero.” Sango quickly turned around and left the hut, the door flap
fluttering in her wake.
“Kilala!”
The little fire cat
meowed in response and trotted out the door after her.
Inuyasha was the
first to snap out of it, “Keh, wench will get herself injured the momene
se
steps into battle.”
“It adt admit I
highly doubt that Sango’s assistance will be of much help. These are coral
snake demons after all,” Miroku said.
“All of ye hush! Let
the women fight, all of ye know that all three of them are perfectly capable of
taking care of themselves on the battlefield,” Kaede scolded.
Shippo came out from
behind Kaede and bounded onto Kouga’s shoulder, “But Kaede, what if one of them
does get hurt?”
live in your time and possibly know where you live. God help you if
you’re here by yourself one day and they come back again after you.”
She’s right…what if
they go after Mama, grandpa or Souta?
Kagome nodded, “But I’m completely useless! My senses and
abilities haven’t kicked in yet, and I could get you killed if I fuck up.”
Kagome couldn’t quite read the look in Riquo’s eyes. It was
either confidence or pity, either way she didn’t know what she was planning.
“Go up there and stay there,” Riquo pointed up.
Kagome looked up and squinted so her eyes could adjust to
the dark. A tree? Is she out of her friggin mind?!
“What am I supposed to do up there? Observe?”
Riquo rolled her green eyes and licked one of her fangs in
anticipation, “Go up there and avoid them. I’ll fight them and if one of them
manages to get up there use your claws and feet. Don’t tell me that after
traveling with Inuyasha for so long that you didn’t learn anything.”
Kagome sighed, “Alright, alright. Help me up.”
Riquo gave her a leg and Kagome was surprised at how easy it
was with her claws and pulling up her full body weight. Must be gaining some of my strength already.
Once she was several feet high, she perched herself on one of the branches with
her back to the rough bark of the tree. She held her arms out at her sides. Wow, I’m completely balanced up here…I
wonder if my demon powers are starting to kick in…
“Hey Riquo.”
“Ya?”
“How did you run in those stilettos?”
She heard Riquo’s laugh pierce the silence of the park, “I
guess I’m just that good. I’m even gona fight in them too—“
Riquo was cut off as she sensed the snake demons making
their way into the park.
“Don’t make a sound Kagome and no matter what do NOT come
down here.”
Kagome nodded and then mentally slapped herself since Riquo
couldn’t see her. She felt something odd and looked down to see the silhouette
of the snake demons approaching a growling Riquo. Am I sensing them? Impossible, I shouldn’t be gaining my abilities this
soon…Kagome…you really need to stop drinking…
“You fool! Do you really think we cannot sssensse the
half-breed up in the tree? It is pointlesss to try and protect it sso why don’t
you jussst hand it over to usss. We promissse to be gentle.”
Kagome gaped down at them. It?! Did they seriously just refer to me as It?
Jeez, even demons in the Feudal Era have more respect than that!
Riquo said nothing, just stood at the base of the tree glaring
he dhe demons in front of her. A shadow moved to her right and Riquo could see
a male snake with yellow hair creeping towards the other side of the tree.
Riquo was at his side in a flash and kicked out just as quickly, her heeled
foot coming into contact with his abdomen. Her stiletto heel punctured through
his skin and he hissed aloud in pain. She swung her foot down in front of her,
bringing him down to the ground onto his back with her foot still on top and
inside of him, displaying him to the rest of the coral snakes.
“Anyone else?”
They attacked all all at once. There had to be at least two
dozen of them and Riquo was doing all she could to keep from getting bitten.
She was kicking, spinning, punching, slashing and biting. For a moment she
wondered if Kagura was behind this. Whenever one was knocked down, it came back
up unless she dealt a nasty blow.
This is getting me
nowhere! At this rate I might have to transform…no…I can’t do that here, it’ll
get public without me even realizing it.
Kagome watched from her perch in the tree with terror. Her
teeth were clenched and her claws were digging into the tree branch she sat on.
Why the hell am I just
sitting here? I have to do something they’re going to kill her!
Something started to pulse within her every time she saw
Riquo get injured. These demons were stronger than any other demon she’d faced.
Every time they were knocked down, they got back up. She only saw this kind of
thing when Kagura was using her dance of the dead.
Riquo sliced through two snakes at once, when she felt
something behind her. She spun around quickly to see nothing behind her, but
two snakes had grabbed her arms and had her pinned
against them.
“NO! RIQUO!” Kagome shouted. She
was about to jump down when she sensed something coming towards them fast. Ok…I know I’m sensing something…and it seems
familiar.
“HIRAIKOTSU!”
The giant boomerang flew over Riquo’s head yet clipped both
demons that were holding her arms, knocking them to the ground. Kilala came flying through the air in her transformed stage, taking
down a snake that had come up behind Riquo again. Sango caught her boomerang on
the rebound and let it fly again, taking out five more snakes. Riquo was up
again fighting right by her side.
”Yo Sango…how’d you know we were in trouble?” Riquo asked ducking over one of
the snakes tail whips.
“Call it a sixth sense,” Sango said, deciding to keep the
crystal ball a secret until the got back to Kaede’s.
“Well I’m glad you’re here, but these damn snakes get up every
time I knock them down…you have to kill ‘em to stop ‘em.”
Sango smirked as she threw Hiraikotsu again, “Do you really
think I have any qualms about that?”
Riquo laughed, “I like the way you think!”
Riquo, Sango and Kilala were killing off the snake demons
without too many problems from then on. Finally Kilala cornered one snake and
killed it and that was the last one. The battle had been tiring and long, but
all of the coral snake demons were gone.
“Thank God that’s over,” Riquo said nursing a wound on her
left forearm. Sango hitched her boomerang onto her back, and stretched, and
Kilala nuzzled her leg, one of her eyes closed.
“I think her eye was hurt during the battle. Do you think
it’s serious?” Sango inspected the fire cats’ eye with scrutiny.
Riquo bent down and nuzzled Kilala’s head with her own and
sniffed, “I don’t smell any poison, and there isn’t any blood coming out.
Something probably just got in there during the battle, dust or a stick or
something. Kagome, do you think you can help Kilala?”
There was silence and then they heard Kagome mutter ‘yeah,
gimme a sec’ before they saw tree branches rustling in her attempt to come down
in one piece.
“Can’t you talk to cats?” Sango asked, petting Kilala’s
head.
Riquo nodded and growled in the back of her throat. It was dirt wasn’t it?
Kilala meowed in response. Yes, a snake demon kicked up dirt into my eye.
Riquo nodded and then froze. Oh shit…
“Riquo…what is it?”
“There’s more coming…”
Sango unhitched Hiraikotsu quickly, “Kagome! Stay up there,
there’s more snake demons!”
Riquo and Sango concentrated to try and detect which
direction they were coming from.
“Damnit! I can’t sense which way
they’re coming from!”
“Probably becaussse we’re all around you cat!!”
It was all a giant blur. Four snakes came out of nowhere and
pounced on Kilala’s back. Unfortunately for them she got pissed and took
flight, with four more grabbing her feet and none of them letting go of her no
matter how high she went. Riquo and Sango were both distracted by Kilala’s
problems to think about their own and were grabbed by several snakes at once,
both of them getting pinned to the ground.
Their leader came through the crowd of snakes and stood
before them as they were held down.
“Now… we kill them and then get the half-breed ssscum,” he
chuckled, “I cannot believe that you even went into public with that thing! You
mussst be sssso embarassssed…and yet your missstake will cosst you your life. Poor foolsss.”
“ENOUGH!”
Riquo craned her neck to see Kagome crouched low at the base
of the tree. Her scent was different, it was more like
Inuyasha's when he was transformed. Riquo’s eyes widened.
Oh
fuck…not now…not here!
Kagome raised her head, her eyes
were purple with a blue slit down the middle. She had the blue streaks on her
face, and her claws and fangs had grown longer. Her stilettos were next to her
in pieces. Obviously she had difficulties getting them off with her claws.
“Kagome! No, stay
back!” Sango shouted, knowing exactly what Kagome was doing.
But Sango’s plea fell on deaf ears. Kagome lunged forward,
tackling all of the snakes that had Riquo and Sango pinned and began her reign
of bloodshed. Sango sat up and almost vomited at the sight before her.
It’s like the first
time Inuyasha transformed all over again…I can’t believe this is happening to
her! Kagome is a miko and has a pure heart! This shouldn’t be happening to her!
Riquo’s conscience told her get your ass off the ground and go stop Kagome as before she kills
every snake in sight, but her body told her oh hell no…you keep your ass on the ground before the crazy bitch
slices you up too.
Before Riquo could decide on what to do, most of the snakes had
been demolished already. Kagome was now pinning the leader to the ground, and
she was completely covered in blood.
“Beg you pathetic fool,” she said in a low raspy voice that
was not at all Kagome, “let me hear you beg before you die!”
“How the hell do we subdue her? The only thing that works on
Inuyasha is ‘sit.’” Sango said.
Riquo bit her lip nervously looking around, “Go tend to Kilala, I’ll take care of Kagome.”
“How?”
“Just do it, trust me.”
Riquo leapt up and ran towards Kagome as fast as she could
and tackled her off of the snake leader. Once she had her pinned, Riquo closed
her jaws over Kagome's throat.
Riquo growled to her in their language. Kagome! Enough is enough now stop this!
Kagome narrowed her demon eyes and growled in response. I will not! I want every last one of them
dead for what they said about me!
Riquo tightened her hold on Kagome's throat, forcing her to
scream out in pain. Don’t make me do this
Kagome!
When it became obvious that Kagome was in no state of mind
to transform back to her normal self, Riquo tightened her grip on Kagome's
throat until blood was drawn, and then Kagome passed out. Luckily, her being
unconscious meant she transformed back to her normal self.
Back in the Feudal
Era, screams were piercing the night from Kaede’s hut. Kouga writhed on the
floor, his hands around his throat, his scar pulsing red and bleeding. Inuyasha
and Miroku tried to lean him against the wall but Kouga was thrashing too hard
for them to grasp him. Shippo, since Kouga was his favorite, was a damn wreck
and was running back in forth in the hut screaming and crying.
“Kaede! Please use and herb or something! Don’t
let Kouga die!!” the little fox kit cried.
Shippo tripped over
the crystal ball and landed square into Kaede’s lap with an ‘oompf.’ The crystal
ball rolled off of the platform it was on and cracked into four pieces. Kaede paid
no mind to the crystal ball and consoled the fox kit.
“Calm ye self child,
the only thing that can stop this is for Riquo to release her hold on Kagome's neck.”
Inuyasha and Miroku were
trying to grab at Kouga again when the wolf arched his back, screaming out
loudly and then passed out. He started shivering in his sleep so Inuyasha and Miroku
grabbed his arms and leaned him against the wall, pulling a blanket over him in
the process.
“It would seem that Riquo
has finally let go,” Kaede said. Inuyasha turned around expecting to see Riquo in
the crystal ball, but when he saw the broken pieces he almost choked.
“What the hell did
you do!” he howled, “Now we can’t see them! How the fuck are we supposed to
know what happens to them?!” Inuyasha made a grab for Shippo but Kaede stopped
him.
“Calm ye self Inuyasha.
I have a feeling that Riquo and the others will be returning without further
problems. Just be patient.”
Riquo cautiously crawled over to the snake leader as he
spazzed out on the ground.
“That is no half-demon! That’s a monster! She should be
killed or locked away with the key thrown away!” he put his face in his hands
and started weeping.
Riquo snarled at him and the snake made haste to regain his
composure, “You are the one who should be killed snake. But my friend has done
enough damage to your clan as it is,” Riquo stood over the snake to her full
height, sneering down at him, “and if I ever hear of you bothering her family
or another half-demon again, I will
personally kill you. NOW GO!”
The snake stumbled over himself to get out of Riquo’s sight.
Once gone, Riquo sighed with relief but winced at the pain searing through her
body.
Little bastards gave
me a run for my life…o well…so did Kagome I guess.
“Riquo, come over here.”
Riquo turned to see Sango kneeling over a convulsing Kagome who
was leaning her body against Kilala. Riquo sped over there and knelt down next
to her.
“I think she’s gone into shock. We have to get her back to
her house, her mom might know what to do,” Riquo gently picked up Kagome, Kilala
standing with her and laid her on Kilala's back.
Kagome woke up as she was laid down and panicked, “What! Riquo
what happened?! Where am I?!”
“Shhh, shh Kagome…you’re going to be alright, just rest now,”
Riquo stroked the frightened cheetah’s face as Kagome faded into sleep once
again.
Riquo sighed, I can’t believe this happened to her. She wasn’t supposed to get her
abilities for another week at the most, and now her miko blood is tainted…
“Riquo, what does this mean?” Sango asked, walking next to Riquo
as they silently made their way to Kagome's shrine.
“I don’t know. This wasn’t supposed to happen to her.”
“Her miko blood has been tainted hasn’t it,” Sango said more
as a statement than a question.
Riquo ran her c thr through her brown hair, fighting back
the tears of realization that hit her with great force. They walked along a
quiet, dark cobblestone walkway that led to the sidewalk of Kagome's shrine. Frogs
and grasshoppers sang a symphony that only could be understood by them, but was
peaceful to the rest of the world.
“I was just thinking that. I don’t know what effect this
will have on her miko powers…but from what you’ve told me
Inuyasha got stronger after his demon blood manifested itself. But it tainted
his human half of his blood, and that’s probably what happened to Kagome.”
They walked in silence the rest of the way, and fortunately
no one decided to take a walk in the park on this night. The shrine glowed
against the darkness of the city, almost like a lifeline that was all that they
had to grasp. Kilala flew up the length of the stairs, and Riquo carried Sango up
with her speed.
Riquo knocked on the door even though she knew she didn’t
have to. It just felt wrong to waltz into someone’s house with their
unconscious daughter and say, “Oops, sorry we had a little accident, can you
fix this?”
Riquo heard movement from inside the house, but she didn’t
sense Souta.
Good, the last thing I
need is the kid spazzin out with Kagome being a potential hazard.
Mama opened the door with a smile. Riquo and Sango kept
their heads down, but Riquo felt Mama’s face drop and it was all she could do
to keep from bursting into tears.
“Um…we…we were attacked…by coral snake demons,” Riquo dug
her claws into her palms. The puncture wounds were deep and blood from her hand
dripped on the front porch.
“Bring her inside; I’ll have grandpa tend to your wounds.”
Riquo snapped her head up to see Mama walking Kilala into
the living room. Sango walked towards the door, her mouth wide open gaping at
Mama’s back.
“That woman is incredible. Any other mother in this time
would have had a fit,” Riquo said. Sango grabbed Riquo’s bloody hand, gently
running her hand over the four holes.
“I’ll find something to put over these so they don’t infect
while they heal. Come on, let’s go inside,” Sango led her inside into the
living room. Grandpa brought in peroxide, rubbing alcohol and Neosporin. He
went to aid Riquo’s hand wound when she stopped him.
”These will heal, tend to Sango first,” Riquo pointed to Sango’s wounds.
“My child, these wounds in your hand are
not your only wounds.”
Riquo looked down and laughed at herself. Sure enough, she
had bloody gashes all over her body.
“I’m going to clean Kagome up in a bath tub and put her to
bed. There’s another shower in my room if you two would like to take turns
cleaning up. I’ll put out some clean pajamas since all of you look too tired to
travel back home. Does your…um…cat bathe with you?”
Mama asked, placing her hand on Kilala’s head.
Sango smiled despite the situation, “Send her down once you
have Kagome settled. Kilala can help you so you don’t strain yourself carrying Kagome.”
“Kilala,” Mama said guiding the fire cat up the stairs into Kagome's
bathroom, “that’s a cute name.”
Riquo was staring at Kagome's retreating body when she felt
herself being pushed in the direction of Mama’s bathroom.
“Go shower and I’ll treat the rest of your wounds that haven’t
healed by then. I’ll take care of your friend,” Grandpa said, gently nudging
her forward.
Riquo nodded and retreated into the bathroom, hearing Sango introduce herself
to grandpa as he treated her wounds. She stripped herself of her skanky
clothes, blushing when she realized that Mama and grandpa had seen her and Kagome
like this.
Oh well, not like it
matters now anyways.
Riquo stepped into the shower and sighed, the warm water
washing away the dirt and blood from her body. She could feel her wounds begin
to heal since they were clean now, and she waited for the ones in her hands to
heal before she shampooed her hair.
God…it feels good to
get all that shit off of me. That was one hell of a battle.
When all the shampoo and grime was gone from her body, Riquo
stepped out of the shower and wrapped a warm fluffy towel around her body. She found
another hand towel and dried off her tail and then her hair. Mama had placed a black
tank top and a pair of white flannel pajama pants on a stool outside the
bathroom and Riquo dried herself off before changing, making sure her wounds
were not bleeding.
She cleaned up the bathroom and walked out to see Sango sitting
on the couch waiting for the shower. Riquo quickly inspected her wounds, and
was glad to see that was free from infection.
“Is everything ok with Kagome?” Riquo asked running her
hands through her wet brown hair.
“Her mother put her to bed I think.”
Kilala came down the stairs in her kitten form and landed in
Sango’s lap. Sango petted her and nuzzled her, then reeled back scrunching up
her noise. Riquo had already taken a step back the moment the fire cat walked
into the room.
“She reeks of sulfur,” Sango said, standing and heading for
the shower.
“I’m going to go dry my hair, then check on Kagome,” Riquo sped
outside and once far enough away from the house, spun herself in a circle so
that all the water was out of her hair and she was completely dry. After that
she sped inside the house and up the stairs and halted when she got to Kagome's
door. She heard Maovinoving around and gently knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
Riquo slipped into the room and walked over to where Mama
was sitting on the edge of Kagome's bed.
“Did she wake up?” she asked.
“No, she stayed out the whole time.”
“Good, I was afraid she might wake up and go nuts again,” Riquo
sat next to her, staring at the sleeping half-demon in front of her.
“I am so sorry about this, Ms. Higurashi,
I promise I will never let it happen again. Her demon blood…it just manifested
all of a sudden.”
Mama leaned forward and wiped away the sweat that was
forming on Kagome's brow, “Do not blame yourself Riquo.
You had the most wounds out of all three so I know you fought the hardest to
protect my child. You’re like a sister to her; I trust her life with you as
much as I do Inuyasha.”
Hearing Inuyasha's name made Riquo’s heart flutter and she absently
reached for her scar to rub it. She really did miss him and she couldn’t wait
to get back home.
As if reading her mind, Mama said, “O yes, Kagome was
planning on getting some school work and bringing it with her on her travels. Will
you go and pick it up for her? I think it will make things a lot easier and you
all can get home faster.”
Riquo frowned, “I thought she would have to at least stay
here for school for a couple of days.”
