Time for another toasty warm youkai lemon….
23. School Days
The woman shook her head at the youkai crouched on the ground next to her. “I know it doesn’t seem like much, but it really is progress.”
The youkai snarled, glaring at her with scarlet eyes. “It’s only part of the answer, and you know it. Yes, I can get myself into this state without any trouble now, even when I have the Tetsusaiga. Yes, I can now think like this--at least when you’re around. But I still haven’t figured out exactly how to bring myself back out of it and return to my regular form by myself.”
She released that portion of her attention she had kept focused on the blunt sword sticking in the ground next to them, lowering the barrier she had learned how to create. It was, she decided, a useful ability: unlike most of the barriers they had encountered on their travels, she could control not only the size and shape of the barriers generated by her sword, but she could also make them selective--she could determine exactly what could pass and what could not. “Are you ready to come back now?”
The youkai leered at her, flexing his claws. “Not quite. Why? Did you have something special in mind?”
She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him up into her willing embrace. “I’m sure I can think of something.”
He held her tight, sniffing greedily at the scent of her skin while touching her lightly through her clothes. “So can I,” he growled.
Despite his youkai form, his caresses were gentle, enticing her to respond rather than simply taking what was his. He enjoyed loving her with this body, even though it required a certain measure of self-control on his part--his youkai form was much stronger physically than his normal body, its natural weapons sharper and more prominent. It had taken a number of attempts before he had been able to fully indulge his passion for the human woman without leaving her with scratches and bite marks for a few hours afterwards. Still, he decided, the results had been well worth it: even though he did not tire easily in his natural form, this youkai body could go on practically indefinitely, making it a useful tool for special occasions.
He drew the very tips of his claws across the skin exposed below the hem of her yukata, eliciting a low moan of appreciation. Despite a long-standing ambivalence toward his youkai self, he no longer really cared exactly what form he happened to be in--his mate loved him no matter what. Tearing his attention away from the idle speculations with the mental note that he would never be able to understand her thoughts in this regard, he lowered his lips to the shoulder now exposed by her movements against his body, dragging his sharp fangs across the soft flesh to make her moan even louder.
He loved being able to make her react this way, giving herself to him so freely and with no thought of withholding any part of her essential self. Even after all this time, he still didn’t understand how she could do that--he was, after all, a monster of sorts, not to be trusted. Still, she trusted him, not only with her life but with that of their daughter as well. As he considered the matter further with the small part of his mind not occupied with pleasuring his mate, he realized suddenly that the others trusted him as well, despite the fact that he could have slaughtered then all at any time, regardless of his physical form. Shaking his head to clear it, he decided that this would be a matter best considered at another time.
Returning his full attention to his mate, he was delighted to note that she was by now more than eager for him. Pressing his body to hers, he proceeded to pleasure her slowly, driving her to the edge of a climax sure to dwarf all others. Still he moved slowly in her body, until he could almost smell her desperation for release. Grabbing her hips, he suddenly moved with greater force and speed, pounding her to a screaming orgasm that seemed never to stop. She twitched and moaned in his grasp while he continued to plunge wildly in and out of her body, bringing her to a second climax in less than ten minutes. This time, he pulled her hips tight against him as she shrieked with pleasure, her inner walls tightening around him painfully, stripping his seed from him as he howled through his own release.
After an all-too-brief moment spent simply resting together on the floor of the clearing, the youkai turned to his mate. “I suppose it’s time to change back now.”
She shrugged, not really caring what form he was in. “If you like,” she said, reaching up to stroke the soft fur on the outside of his ears. “Come back to me now,” she murmured, feeling the energy in him shift as he began to return to his usual hanyou form. Continuing to stroke his ears, she studied him closely until his previously blood red eyes opened to reveal their normal golden-amber color.
“You know,” he murmured, “If you keep this up, we won’t get home any time soon.”
She smiled brightly at him. “And that would be a bad thing?”
“No,” he admitted, “But I don’t think you want to leave Nozomi for much longer.”
“You’re right,” she said, with the soft smile she reserved for their immediate family. “Let’s go home.”
*
The hanyou awoke slowly the next morning, alert to his surroundings although not yet willing to open his eyes and destroy the illusion of continuing sleep. His daughter, recently fed, was being entertained out in the cave home’s main room by her adopted older brother. Sango and Miroku were quietly discussing the possibility that there were in fact no more fragments of the Shikon no Tama to be found out in the narrow hallway connecting all of the chambers with the main room. From the scent drifting his way from the public room, it seemed that there would be a vegetable stew and baked fish for breakfast. He could hear the nearly silent movements of his mate searching through the storage rooms for something or other before returning to their bedchamber with a slight rustle of the reed curtain that acted like a door. He inhaled deeply, savoring her complex, intoxicating scent.
His eyes flew open in surprise as he realized that something was different. Leaping to his feet, he grabbed her and swung her around in a circle, scattering the scraps of fabric she had been carrying. Even so, she laughed, asking, “What’s all this about?”
He realized then that she was completely unaware of the changes in her scent. He bent down to nibble lightly at her ear, whispering, “Remember when you talked about a brother for Nozomi? Aside form Shippou, I mean.”
She blushed slightly as she remembered the exact conversation he meant. “Of course. Did you think I’d ever forget that day?”
He shook his head, the thick silver-white hair swaying with the motion. “Of course not. It’s just that there’s a chance that that brother may be showing up after all.”
“What are you talking about?”
He lowered his eyes, not entirely sure how she would take the news. “You smell different. I just noticed it when you came in here. It looks like there’s another pup coming.”
She was not surprised--she stared at him in absolute shock. “That’s impossible! All of the books I’ve read say that women almost never get pregnant again while they have a young infant still nursing.”
He smirked, pulling her tight against his chest. “I’d say that ‘almost’ is the key word here, love. I mean, it’s not like we’ve been going out of our way to prevent it. Besides, how many of the women in those books had hanyou mates?”
She smiled softly, reaching up to run her fingers along the outer edges of his ears. “That’s true enough,” she whispered. “Do you mind?”
“Do I mind? Hell, no! After seeing what we made together in Nozomi, I want as many pups as you care to give me.”
That was when she said the one thing that could make him cringe inwardly. “I can’t wait to tell Mama!” At the stricken look on his face, she continued, “What’s wrong?”
He sank slowly to the futon, shaking his head. “What do you suppose she’ll say?”
She dropped down next to him, enclosing him with her arms as she stroked his magnificent hair. “She’ll be thrilled. It’s not like it is in my world--there, people don’t dare to have large families any more: it costs so much for food, and clothing, and education, not to mention all the extra stuff that they absolutely have to have to keep up with their friends. Here, we can support a much larger family then we’re ever likely to have. We produce much of our own food and can make most of whatever else we need. With the beautiful furniture you’ve been making, we’re pretty wealthy in terms of the people around us.” She could feel him calming down as she held him. “Can we go back in a day or two so we can tell her?”
He shook his head. “Not right now. If we wait until next week, we’ll have an excuse to take Nozomi back for a visit--the full moon is in eight days.”
“Good point,” she said, reluctantly releasing him. “What do you say we get something to eat and head out to the forest for another try?”
Understanding that she was determined to get both of them to the point where they would be as ready for disaster as possible as soon as she could, he nodded. “The sooner we get ready, the sooner we can end this once and for all.”
She looked at him sharply. “You think he’s coming too, don’t you?”
He nodded slowly, not really wanting to burden her with his suspicions. “Yeah. I’m kind of surprised he hasn’t found us already. But what makes you so sure he’s coming?”
She shivered. “I’ve been dreaming about the final battle with Naraku for a couple of weeks now--I’m surprised I haven’t woken you up.” She shook her head to dispel the lingering images. “It’s been horrible, but I didn’t want to worry you about something like that.”
He shook his head. “You’re not the only one thinking about it--Sango and Miroku were talking about it just this morning. You have to tell me when you think of things like this, love--your suspicions could be the best early warning we could have.”
She sniffled a bit, concerned that he could be seriously thinking of using her worries as a basis for action. “Don’t be silly. Don’t they always say that women my age--especially under these conditions--are always getting crazy ideas? I don’t want to worry everybody every time I get some strange idea in my head.”
He pulled her to him, not entirely believing that she could still be so unaware of her formidable abilities. “Listen, baka,” he whispered, “You have miko powers. Sure, you’re not really trained, but even Kaede-babaa says that you’re more powerful than Kikyou ever was. You just have to learn to trust what those feelings are telling you.”
She pushed herself even closer to him, inhaling his woodsy, masculine scent. “Maybe you’re right. In any case,” she continued, “We have a lot of work to do before everything falls apart, so we better get something to eat and get at it.”
*
Only two days later, they were practicing their new skills in the forest when Kagome looked up in surprise. “Inuyasha,” she said, “Something’s coming. I can feel a couple of pieces of the Shikon no Tama, and three--no four--youkai coming this way.” At the low, almost subsonic growl that began to build in her mate, she crossed the clearing to rest a tiny hand on his arm. “It’s okay, love--it’s Kouga. And it looks like he’s brought some friends this time.”
The youkai grinned, showing his impressive fangs. This, he decided, could be fun. Since he knew that the wolf youkai’s nose was nearly as good as his own, he wasn’t surprised when the approaching youkai came to a halt in the forest just out of sight of the clearing. “They’ll be here directly. In the meantime….” he said, advancing slowly on his mate. In a blur of movement, he pounced. Once he had her pinned to the ground, he proceeded to tickle her unmercifully, running his claws lightly up and down her sides until she shrieked with laughter.
Finally, out of breath, she lay still beneath him as he stopped tickling her and bent his head to capture her lips once again. “That,” he said, “Was for not telling me when those dreams of yours started. Don’t you understand how important something like that might be?”
She shook her head. “No. Those aren’t important. What’s important is this: us, our family--on both sides of the well--and our friends. Nothing else really matters.”
“But,” he said, for once able to outthink his clever mate, “What if the dreams hold a key to protecting those things that matter?”
“All right,” she laughed, reaching up to her youkai lover, “You win. Now let me up so we can--” Her voice stopped with a squeak in mid-sentence as she looked past his shoulder to the four curious faces watching her face turn an almost impossible shade of scarlet.
The wolf prince sniffed audibly. “Geez, mutt. Can’t you do anything else?”
Suddenly realizing that the wolf youkai was talking about the changes in her scent that she now realized were as obvious to him as they were to her mate, Kagome glared at him from her position pinned to the ground by the comfortable weight across her hips. “Kouga,” she forced out from between gritted teeth, “What we choose to do is our business. As far as this is concerned, before you start whining about it, I suggest you give it a try yourself.”
Ginta and Hakkaku, two of Kouga’s followers who had in fact been his closest friends since they were all pups together, helped her to rise after being released by her mate. They greeted their human sister warmly, whispering that Kouga was still a little put out by the fact that she had chosen someone else as her mate. That was when Kagome’s eyes were drawn to the red-haired wolf youkai who traveled with them. One look at her piercing green eyes, and the human woman threw herself at the other. “Ayamae! I’m so glad to see you again! What on earth brings you this far south?”
The wolf youkai bitch grinned broadly. “My people are forming an alliance with the other wolf youkai tribes. We’ve been warned that something will happen soon, something that will change the lives of every creature--human or youkai--in the land.”
His attention captured by the conversation, the inuyoukai gradually returned to his normal hanyou form. With a meaningful glance at his mate, he nodded. “Naraku.” As the others stared in surprise, he went on, “We’ve been expecting an attack for a while now. With the piece of the Shikon no Tama Naraku has, the two parts with Kouga, and the one in Sango’s little brother, we’re pretty sure that we have all the rest. We think that it’s only a matter of time before he comes here looking for them. That’s what we’ve been doing here in the forest--trying to refine our skills so that we can take him down when he does.”
The wolf prince nodded slowly. Maybe he wouldn’t have to keep scrambling around the countryside hunting that bastard after all--it was only a matter of time before the filthy hanyou came looking for his own Shikon shards. “Thanks for the tip,” he said. “I guess we don’t really need to hunt him either--he’ll be coming looking for me soon enough, I expect. One thing,” he said, before turning to leave, “If you ever collect the rest of the jewel, I’ll give up my two pieces --anything to get rid of that damned thing so it can’t cause any more trouble.”
Then, as suddenly as they had arrived, the two wolf youkai leaders disappeared in whirlwinds of dust and leaves, followed at a slower pace by Ginta and Hakkaku. “Kouga, wait for us!”
Kagome suddenly looked up into her mate’s golden eyes. “You did it,” she whispered.
“Yeah,” he said, pulling her closer, “But I’m still not sure how I changed myself back. It happened while we were talking about Naraku. Maybe it had something to do with trying to make myself understood, or maybe it was because I wasn’t trying so hard--I don’t know.”
“Well, I know this: if it happened once, it can happen again--all we have to do is find the key.”
Somehow, the hanyou didn’t think it would be quite so easy.

The elder of the Higurashi women looked at the young couple before her in surprise--she hadn’t thought such a thing could happen. “Are you sure/”
Her daughter nodded slowly, never taking her eyes from her own daughter, who was trying to pull herself to a standing position by hanging on to the furniture. “I’m sure. He can’t be wrong about something like this.”
“I didn’t think it was possible….”
She nodded. “I know. I thought the same thing you did. Then I realized something--none of the women in the books had hanyou husbands, did they?”
The older women smiled. “Probably not,” she agreed. She brightened even further. “Let’s go shopping!”
Three hours and numerous parcels later, the four were sitting around a small table in the mall’s food court, trying to decide what looked good for lunch, when two of Kagome’s old friends from school appeared out of the crowd. “Ayumi! Yuka! I haven’t seen you two in over a year!”
The two swooped down on their old friend, pulling up chairs. Yuka looked closely at Kagome, shaking her head. “You look…happy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look better, even with Houjou.”
She sighed. They had never really understood that she hadn’t really enjoyed their matchmaking efforts between Houjou and herself. She shook her head. “I never wanted to go out with Houjou. There was always somebody else.”
Ayumi, who tended to speak before she thought despite having some of the best grades in their class at school, asked, “You’re talking about that possessive, selfish, violent, badass delinquent, aren’t you?”
With a quick warning glance at the silent figure next to her, she said, “Not exactly.” Deciding that the time had come for at least partial honesty, she continued, “This is my somebody else. His name’s Inuyasha, and I’ve known him since my fifteenth birthday.”
The two focused their attentions on the silver-haired young man, and he was instantly grateful for the ball cap and tinted glasses that concealed his most obvious “differences” from the casual observer. The two stared intently at him for a few seconds, then started a barrage of questions and remarks. “I don’t remember you from our school.” “Have you ever cut your hair?” “Where did you meet Kagome?” “Are you going to get married?” “Who is that?”
He chose to answer only the last of the questions with a tight smile that carefully concealed his sharp fangs. “This is my daughter Nozomi. We’re here to visit for the day.”
Unfortunately, that did nothing to satisfy their curiosity. Obviously, it was time to step in. “It’s not exactly like it sounds. The truth is that Nozomi is actually our daughter. We’ve been together since my birthday last year.”
That silenced the questions once and for all, and the two girls left soon, with plenty of what would no doubt be wild stories to share with their other friends.
