“Leiko’s family died first.”
“Masao’s family passed first.”
“Leiko’s parents.”
“Masao’s.”
“Leiko.”
“Masao.”
“Leiko!”
“Miko, I was there-”
“No you weren’t!”
“I was alive. You, however, were not.”
“Maybe so, but I heard the story straight from Masao’s mouth!”
Sesshoumaru’s eye twitched, though it went unnoticed, and he stood up to tower over the sitting woman. Her neck strained while she stayed focused on his face, her amused glare still dominating her features.
The conversation that had initially begun their… debate… was, oddly enough, stemmed from a tea Sesshoumaru had so graciously bestowed her with, (“Drink it and stop. Complaining.”) curing Kagome of the heaviest of her… symptoms. (Disregarding the fact that all of those symptoms were her own fault as Sesshoumaru politely pointed out numerous times.)
Sesshoumaru leaned down and continued to glare at her. He was right. Masao’s family died first, unless Leiko lied to him, which was completely believable, in which case he owed the miko an apology and- He was right.
He was.
“There’s only one way to settle this,” Sesshoumaru said, leaning down further to stare her in the eyes.
Kagome – ignoring their close proximity and the heated itch under her ribcage that was traveling down – crossed her arms and smirked. “Oh? How is that?”
Sesshoumaru’s nose twitched and he leaned down a little further, his silver bangs mixing with her black ones. “We’ll have to ask them.”
Kagome blinked. “How is that possible? Masao disappeared a long time ago and Leiko said she’d travel back to the Western- your lands.”
His lips curled the tiniest bit. “It is entirely possible.”
“Why?”
“They are to the east of us and moving closer fast.”
As the information settled in her head, Kagome suddenly forgot she had a demon lord inches away from her face. “Really? When will they be here?”
Sesshoumaru waited a few moments, listening to the pound of feet and estimating by the strength of their scents maybe… a few seconds. What made him pause was the hurried nature of their steps. Kagome stood up and gathered her bow and quiver, grinning. “Let’s go meet the-”
A dark blur shot in front of her.
“Masao-san?” Kagome asked.
“Run,” Masao said, panting.
“What? Masao-san-”
“Run! Runrunrunrun!” And he was gone.
Kagome blinked and looked up at Sesshoumaru. “Why would he-?”
Sesshoumaru ignored her and turned to where Masao had came from, focusing his senses.
“Sesshoumaru-sama?”
At the sound of countless thundering footsteps reached him, Sesshoumaru’s eyes widened. Not in fear, but at the surprise that Masao, Leiko and… the other odd youkai girl had had an army chasing after them.
So, stay here and fight and reveal your location and plan to the Northern lord, or run.
Decision made, Sesshoumaru placed a hand on Tokijin’s hilt-
Then shoved it in his sash, grabbed Kagome’s collar, and shot into the air, keeping a firm hold on the squirming priestess.
He wasn’trunning. It was a tactical battle plan set to-
Okay, so he was running. But Masao started it.
Hiding himself from sight, keeping his scent and aura out of range, ducking between dark boulders scattered over the sand of the beach like a common criminal, Inuyasha watched as the Northern lord’s advocates gathered his troops on Southern land. It was highly unlikely the Southern lord didn’t know what was happening on his own property (almost in his backyard), which meant that he had rallied himself with the north.
Gee, wasn’t that helpful.
Inuyasha snorted and drew the still sheathed Tetsusaiga to his chest, a plan forming in his mind.
To one side of the encampment lay the sea, a dark forest with numerous hills and mountains covered the opposite side, then a long stretch of barren sand and finally, on the side Inuyasha lay hidden, there were the great rocks and a towering wall over the ravine.
Guessing distances and counting the leaps he would need, Inuyasha’s eyes flitted about in the evening light as the strategy grew in his head. Though waiting until night descended would be helpful – his fire-red robes weren’t exactly camouflage – it would be stupid. Demons were at their most during the dark hours, so early morning, after the sun had begun to rise, Inuyasha would set his one-man army into action. Until then, he’d wait.
And wait.
And wait.
And-
“Wait! Sesshoumaru! Where are we going?!”
“We are following the cat and his entourage.”
“Where?”
I have not the slightest idea, hung in the air, but Sesshoumaru was too set on following the back of the cat-youkai to voice his concerns. Faintly the scent of Leiko and… another, hung over Masao, but it was muted. Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed and he put more force into his next jump, making Kagome gasp and wrap her arms around his waist. He ignored her, gaining on Masao effortlessly while avoiding trees and- was that a deer? “Feline,” he said, keeping his eyes forward.
“Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama?” Masao returned, leaping over a log and evading a tree systematically. Kagome sighed in envy. They’re so graceful. It’s completely unjust. I mean they get the hair and the style? If the Universe really did run on equivalent exchange I would’ve seen Sesshoumaru trip at least twice by now.
“Where are the others?”
“I was the distraction.”
“The distraction?”
“I ran while Leiko got away with-”
“Who was the… other female youkai in you company? Assuming it was a youkai.”
Masao growled, but caught himself at Sesshoumaru’s ferocious glare. “She was my daughter.”
Kagome gasped.
Sesshoumaru snorted. “Who is the unlucky mother?”
“Leiko.”
Kagome giggled.
Sesshoumaru choked. “A- an inu and-… and a cat?”
Masao smirked happily. “Mm-hmm.”
“I’m so happy for you, Masao-san!” Kagome called gleefully, ending the exclamation in a squeak when Sesshoumaru passed a thick, towering oak so close a bit of bark broke off on her sleeve.
Masao’s eyes turned toward her – somehow still maintaining his speed – and he smiled slowly. “Thank-you, Kagome-sama. Both Leiko and I are very proud.” Yes, she was still Kagome. Yes, he was still attracted to her. But he had a daughter, and he had Leiko. Besides, judging by the half-scowl the taiyoukai was sporting, the two had grown closer in his absence. Maybe someday Kagome will ‘loosen him up’.
Shivering at the image his mind brought up unbidden of Sesshoumaru in the throes of-
Masao cringed and shook his head. Nope. Not even going to end that.
The colors of early morning flashed through the sky, drawing Inuyasha’s vision to the rising sun from his place hidden in a nook high up on the canyon wall above the Northern lord’s encampment. Tetsusaiga slid from the sheath silently – still rusted and untransformed, waiting for the beckon of Inuyasha’s power – and his hand fell comfortably on the weathered grip. Guards from the night exited the forest, drawing together to rest during the hot day when their youkai energy wavered in the walls around the shiro. All types crowded the area, pulling at his sense and making the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. Rogue youkai, trained youkai, intelligent youkai, youkai with humanoid forms, wild, mindless youkai, and youkai that reeked of substantial power. They all had one thing in common, however.
Inuyasha’s eyes narrowed as he crept toward the edge of his shelf.
A collar, though he was to far away to make out any detail, hung around the neck of every youkai in the encampment. Small, large, humanoids, those that resembled animals, all of them sported an identical choker.
Isn’t that original, Inuyasha grinned and let the Tetsusaiga transform, keeping it down to hide the gleam of metal.
Feeling the same excited, adrenaline-induced elation that every battle brought him; he ran his eyes down the fang of his father, wrapped momentarily in memory.
“Inuyasha!”
“I’ll protect you, wench.”
“Friends stick together Inuyasha. We’ll always be here for you.”
“Your fine the way you are, Inuyasha.”
“Why did you betray me, Inuyasha?!”
Oops. Wrong memory.
He sucked in a breath, wrapped both hands securely around the hilt, and shot up, over the encampment. He twisted to face the rocky mountain behind him, studying briefly how it jutted out over a good portion of the camp. Satisfied, he swung Tetsusaiga over his head. “Wind Scar!”
Kagome needed a bath.
No, she didn’t simply desire a bath. Nor did she merely want one. She needed it.
She wasn’t dirty, she’d bathed the last night actually, but the smell hanging around her was distracting and frustrating and a constant reminder of things.
The point was, she smelt like Sesshoumaru. Not even the wispy smoke and spice of her dream could prepare her for being in a freaking cloud of it. And Sesshoumaru knew it. That’s why he was emanating a possessive sort of smugness that dug under her skin and threaded through the seams of her clothing. The same smugness that infuriated her and aroused her and made her growl and melt in a dizzying, breathless-
You’re doing it again.
Shaking her head Kagome walked toward the sound of water, mumbling all the profanities she could come up with that wouldn’t condemn her soul.
Masao watched her back for a few moments, but looked forward as Sesshoumaru settled him self on the other side of the clearing they’d stopped in. Sesshoumaru looked up and met Masao eyes indifferently, and immediately they both knew it was time for part two of-
‘The silent conversations held by demons that humans can only dream about deciphering.’
Masao leaned back on the rock he’d perched on, his arms crossing and lips curling conceitedly. (Translation: You want her.)
Sesshoumaru snorted and drew a knee up, draping his arm over it. (Translation: Yes. The same way I desire a terminal illness.)
Never loosing the arrogant grin, Masao stretched and leaned his head back on his hands. (You’re sure then? You in no way want the miko?)
Sesshoumaru gave him a deadpan look. (Yes. I’m sure.)
Masao sat up again and leaned forward, his hand making a move similar to that of a tail wagging idly. (Oh, good then. I heard that wolf youkai that’s so taken with her was coming behind us, anyway.)
Sesshoumaru’s eyes widened, though he tried to act uninterested. (Really. How good for her.)
Masao’s arms crossed again. (Yup. I hear that every time he greets her they hug, sometimes more than once. By the time he leaves she’ll be drenched in his scent.)
A large branch fell from the tree above him and Masao yelped, jumping away as it landed where he’d sat moments before. He looked to Sesshoumaru accusingly, but the taiyoukai was staring at the forest impassively, not a hair out of place.
Masao huffed and sat down away from Sesshoumaru and the ‘mysteriously’ shedding tree.
Bitch. Masao thought spitefully toward the taiyoukai, almost laughing at the absurdity of the statement.
Kagome: Kouga? Kouga? When? Like, soon? Are you going to let him kidnap me so I can escape Sesshoumaru-sama and-
Sesshoumaru: No.
1. SESSHOUMARU IS STILL IN CHARACTER! HE’S ALLOWED TO BE SARCASTIC AND PRETTY AND WITTY AND GAY IN HIS HEAD! SHUT-UP!
2. KANELA! *tackles* I missed you. Did you miss me? I missed you.
Two more things because I never know when to shut-up-
Have I ever been drunk before? That’s (completely accurate) preposterous! Why I’ll have you know I’m only a (avid) social drinker. Never have I (missed a day) indulged with alcoholic beverages. And to think you thought I (need a scotch) was drunk. Pfft (No, really, now.)
And the updates might be a little more spaced out. I have this other story I’m working on (18 fucking pages for the prologue. Yeah.) that’s biding my time at the moment.
