Chapter 23: And either we say or we show : So I’m going to fight for my own
The door closed behind her and beams of sunlight poured through the few open windows in the apartment. Inuyasha had left last night for Kikyo’s place and Kagome was surprised at how eerily quiet it was. She left her keys on the counter and wandered to the fridge. Per usual there was half full glasses of water, beer, and soda. There were bowls of ramen and Chinese takeout as well. Not the one to be wasteful, I see Kagome smiled and pulled out a half-eaten box of lo mein, “I guess he figured I’d eat it. Always eating the scraps.” She found a pair of chopsticks still inside the box and laughed, “Or he’s entirely too lazy.” Well, he will have that Kikyo woman to tend to him. “I highly doubt that the lady princess will ever clean up after anyone.” She shoveled some noodles into her mouth and wandered to the sofa. “So I guess you’re excited to spend some time with this Sesshomaru guy?” It will be an interesting time. Kagome pushed back her bangs and sighed, “As long as we find that relic. The sooner it is found I can finish the sketches.” How could you possibly have more to draw? Do you want a sketch of every person you’ve ever met? Honestly. “If I sketch the whole world you’ll have to deal with it.” I will personally stop you just from sheer boredom. “You should be flattered, there are quite a few of you,” Kagome teased, shoveling more noodles. “What else are we going to do with Sango and Inuyasha both gone?” Enjoy things that perhaps I want to do. “As if you have hobbies,” Kagome chuckled. The empty carton sat on the table and she laid back. “Is there something you want to do today? We do leave tomorrow.” Kagome lifted up the fang around her neck and stared at it. I want to see the priestess Kanade. You need to talk to her.Kagome released the necklace and stood up, “Gees fine.”
A half an hour later Kagome knelt across the table from Lady Kanade, who had happily welcomed the young priestess into her home. She had changed into a capped sleeve red blouse and a pair of dark denim capris.
“Thank you for having me over on such short notice,” Kagome bowed her head before sipping on her tea. Lady Kanade smiled, “Think nothing of it, Kagome-chan. You are a student, after all.” Kanade sipped at her own tea and pushed a bang behind her ear. “Is there anything specifically you want to speak on?’ Kagome looked down at the tea and then back to her, “I have not used my powers since the last time I was here.” “Is that all?” She chuckled. “Kagome, you don’t need to worry about rapidly developing those powers. The powers of the priestess are for protection of humans more than anything.” The wound on her hand was entirely healed. But that did not calm Kagome. “I know. It’s more that…Tsuki….wants to speak with you. She does not want to reveal herself because she thinks your powers---“ “---will purify her.” Lady Kanade put down the cup. “While I understand her concern I assure her I am a master at miko powers but I do understand based on previous experiences we do not want a repeat. What does she wish to ask me?” Speak on your unconscious episodes Kagome rubbed the back of her neck. “Usually I am in possession of this body. I carry demonic characteristics, such as claws and canines. That’s the daily norm for me.” Lady Kanade nodded. “Recently…Tsuki has been able to possess this body.” “Well, that is progress, is it not? The two of you can peacefully transfer possession?” “No.” Kagome held her head and felt Tsuki push forward, Kagome’s eyes bled red. “Kagome has vanished in presence once. There was three days where I entirely controlled a human body, no demonic traits, with no sign of her.” Kagome gasped and felt Tsuki fall into the back. She coughed and held her chest. Lady Kanade noted the dark pulse that radiated from her body as Kagome coughed and regained control. “I see…what brought on this instance?” “I wanted to make Inuyasha to stop fighting with his brother, Sesshomaru. Tsuki has some sort of relationship with Sesshomaru.” “A split in desires, I see.” Kagome rubbed the back of her head again, “That fight was only temporary. I went to bed that night feeling completely normal…when I…I mean Tsuki woke up…I was gone.” Lady Kanade took another sip of her tea and let out a sigh. “Do you know what color your aura is, Kagome?” “Aura?” “Every individual, human, demon, or in-between, has a colored aura.” She smiled, “Yours Kagome, is pink.” Kagome smiled, “Well that’s cute. Is that a good thing?” “The priestess will have a pink aura. It signifies her holy powers.” “Does Tsuki have an aura?” “Indeed she does. When she is present, her aura is blue. While yours is soft and fluffy, the blue is colder and collected. When you two do not move harmoniously, your aura is black.” Kanade poured herself more tea. “Humans cannot sense that aura. Other demons and priestesses can see the black aura. It’s unsettling to the nerves. It is not evil but it is not good either. It shows disharmony.” “Disharmony?” “It is one of the most fundamental concepts for the universe.” Lady Kanade poured another cup of tea for Kagome. “You and Tsuki have developed fundamental differences. Usually a demon has a beast, but Tsuki isn’t a beast, she is now become her own person.” Kagome sighed and put down the cup, “So what should I do then?”“You both need to understand what the other needs. You both need to be willing to sacrifice for the other. Once that part of you two is in harmony it will be okay, I hope. You need to dispel the black aura.”
Kagome sat in the local park with an ice cream in her hand and an easel set up in front of her. This was the park where Inuyasha and Kagome had visited when they were humans. Her sketch had two people running through the fountain, one in a dress, one with white hair.
You have been here before. With her free hand Kagome shaded the spray of water droplets in the fountain, “It was the day of the new moon. Apparently half-demons are entirely human on that day.” You have told me you used your holy powers that day. She nodded. “I just remember needing to protect Inuyasha. Then my powers came.” She licked the ice cream and continued to sketch. “I haven’t used the mechanism since the last time I burned you.” Thanks for that. Her sarcasm was apparent. “I don’t know what you want.” Tsuki chuckled; I don’t know what you want Kagome threw her ice cream in the trash beside her and rested her head on her knees. “I’m so tired, Tsuki. Do you feel tired?” Not particularly. Kagome chuckled and looked up at her sketch. She couldn’t help but frown and feel a heavy weight on her. What did her other half want from life and what did Kagome want either? She didn’t have any of her friends to talk to. She thought maybe these next two weeks, while both of her friends were gone, Kagome should really try to figure that out on her own. “When we go to Sesshomaru-sans, why don’t you take control?” Me? Kagome nodded, “You guys only need me for my knowledge. When he has things about the relic I’ll be there. I’ll be there for the work and you can play.” Is it wise to leave me in control this long? We have never switched possessions for longer than the three days you were gone. “But this time I won’t be gone.” You can’t be certain of that. “I don’t care. I just want to think.”If that is what you wish.
The driver was already outside idling when Kagome exited the apartment complex. He, a variant of a dog demon, stepped out of the car and opened the back door for Tsuki. She slid into the car as he placed her bag in the trunk. Tsuki wore tight dark denim and a sequin top that concealed her scars.
“Good morning, Lady Higurashi.” Tsuki nodded and looked out the window, “Approximately how long is this drive?” The driver locked the doors and revved the engine. He looked up at her reflection in the rear-view mirror. “I recommend using the entertainment system to watch something. You would be able to watch a movie or two before we get there. Or sleep. I’m afraid I will be a few hours.” “Thank you….” She turned her eyes to the window and watched the city streets rush by until they eventually blended into the green scenery of the mountains. Kagome conversed occasionally with Tsuki, but for the majority of the trip Tsuki was left to her own thoughts.Tsuki was able to hide thoughts and powers from Kagome. She looked down at her hands and sighed. It felt like something in the future was going to test the bond the two had. The two were not best friends, the two had a working relationship, but Tsuki still wondered what the cost of their lives would be. She flicked the fang around her neck.
“This new listing came on the market on Tuesdays. It has two bedrooms, one walk in bath, high ceilings, and granite countertops.” A woman behind a closed door explained, doorknob jingling with the sound of keys. A red-haired human pushed open the door to the apartment and stepped aside, letting in Kikyo and an ever-reluctant looking Inuyasha. “That’s a few of the items off your check list.”
“You’ve said that about every apartment we’ve walked into,” Inuyasha muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets. Kikyo looked over her shoulder back at Inuyasha and hushed him. This was the fifth apartment Kikyo and Inuyasha had seen in a row today. While Inuyasha had come to America for this very reason, he thought the hunting would have been a little bit more spread out. He was still running on Japanese time and his ears were aching under the hats he’d been wearing. Kikyo though, seemed to have no problem with the daily excursion. The woman didn’t even drink coffee regularly. Inuyasha had no idea what was keeping her standing up, let alone interested in all the empty apartments. She effortlessly glided from room to room, snapping pictures on her camera and measuring doorways and closet space. While she scurried about Inuyasha walked to the back of the apartment. There was a large window alcove, enough room for a person to spread out and sit entirely. He perched himself on the window and looked outside. Sunlight poured through the window and the city below was alive and well. Inuyasha’s first thought was how much Kagome would love an alcove like this one. He could imagine her curled up here, sketchpad on her lap, with him sitting across from her. The two could easily talk comfortably on this large alcove. “You like it, Inuyasha?” His eyes shot open and he turned to Kikyo, who was now standing over him. He smirked, “Keh, I don’t know how anyone likes the noise in this city. It’s so damn loud.” “Remember, I only have my limited human hearing,” Kikyo chided. She reached out and in a surprisingly tender manner touched the top of his head. “You are tired.” “There are too many new smells, sounds, and sights for me. Sensory overlook,” Inuyasha grumbled, leaning into her touch. She smiled gently and looked back to the agent, “We shall end here today. Thank you for your expertise.” The two made it outside to the city streets. Kikyo exchanged business cards and phone numbers with the agent before Kikyo turned back to him. “Would coffee help?” Inuyasha rubbed the back of his head, “That or letting me sleep for a year.” “I’m trying to help, Inuyasha,” she sighed, heading down the street to look for a coffee shop. “Look, I’m sorry. I ain’t good with this heavy travel. You’ve done this more often than me. I still feel like I’m on Japan’s time. I’m tired.” Kikyo opened a door and held it to him, “Come inside and have a cup of coffee. That should help. Then back to the hotel for rest.”Inuyasha smiled weakly, “Thanks.”
Tsuki was woken up a few hours later at the lord’s home by the sea. The driver let her out and informed her that Lord Sesshomaru was somewhere on the estate and would greet her soon. This place is huge. Kagome awed behind Tsuki’s eyes. The mansion was indeed home. It was a typical Japanese estate, one floor spread out over large distances. The doors were made of paper with outdoor hallways with overhangs. There were a few birdbaths and fountains. Tsuki nodded to the driver and slowly wandered the property. As she wandered the lawns she was surprised to find a demon grazing in the field calmly. It was a beast with two heads, similar to a riding animal like a horse. The two heads raised and looked at Tsuki, grunting and scraping at the ground. It has…two heads. Kagome was very surprised to say the least. Tsuki tilted her head and smiled, “It’s a herbivore, At least it won’t eat us.” “That’s Ah-Un! He’s a big softie,” a little voice squeaked. Tsuki turned around to find the voice and found little Rin launching herself into Tsuki. She caught the child with some difficulty and looked down at her. “We meet again, Rin-chan.” Rin, dressed in a summer kimono, looked up at her and smiled. “Oh, you’re not Kagome-chan! Who are you?” Rin seemed unfased by the demonness’s red eyes. “Tsuki-chan.” “Are you Kagome-oni-chan’s sister?” Tsuki rubbed the back of her head, “Something like that.” She looked back at Ah-Un. “He seems peaceful.” “Ah-Un is great. Sometimes I even get to ride on them. You know he flies? Sesshomaru-sama doesn’t really let me fly or anything, but sometimes I do when Jaken’s not looking.” Rin twirled and chatted in her lavendar colored kimono, running up to Ah-Un, the two heads bending down to nuzzle the girl’s face. “That tickles, guys!” “You have already riled her up, this Sesshomaru sees.” Tsuki spun around to find the Lord standing beside her. He was also in a traditional kimono with red chrysanthemum flowers on it. She nodded her head slowly to him, “She was excited to see Kagome.” “Was the ride to your liking?” Tsuki nodded, “It was pleasant. Already I feel my senses restored, now away from the overwhelming potency of the city air.” Sesshomaru looked away from her and to Rin. “Rin. Show Lady Tsuki to her room.” He glanced back at her. “Change and we will discuss over supper.” The room Tsuki was given was more like an entire apartment itself. A large king-sized bed, two wardrobes, a makeup station, a bathroom with a free standing tub, it all reeked of elegance and money. “Lord Sesshomaru is really happy you came.” Tsuki looked down at Rin, who had helped herself to jumping up onto the large bed. Tsuki opened up a closet cabinet and found someone had already put all of her clothes away and beside it was a selection of kimonos. “Oh?” Rin nodded eagerly, still bouncing on the bed. “He had the staff cleaning everything to make sure you would like it. He hasn’t brought a lady here in a long time.” “Is that so?” Tsuki smirked as she pulled out a kimono. It was actually a yukata, considering it was summertime. The yukata was yellow and filled with red flowers that Tsuki didn’t recognize off hand. She looked over her shoulder at the young girl. “When was the last woman here?” Rin looked down at her hands and started to count back. Tsuki took this moment to remove some of her clothes. “Rin-chan was…eight. Her name was Kagura-sama. She was very pretty but not very nice to Rin-chan.” “Hm.” Tsuki had one of her sleeves in her kimono when Rin-chan spoke up again. “Tsuki-chan? What happened to your body?” Tsuki looked down at her scars and turned to Rin, “Kagome was attacked by a not nice demon.” Rin’s eyes filled with horror, “Who would attack Kagome-chan? She saved Rin-chan. She’s so nice.” Tsuki turned back to the mirror on the wall and tied up her outfit. “A mother who did not like that her son was in love with Kagome.” “Kagome-chan was in love?” Rin-chan gasped again, as if what she was hearing was the most scandalous news to ever reach the eleven-year-old’s ears. “Did Kagome-chan get a happily ever after?” Tsuki laughed a little, “Not yet. Though it is not impossible.” Tsuki did not mind putting up with the curious little girls questions. It seemed the child was more straightforward than any of the adults who stepped tentatively around emotionally damaged Kagome and the mysterious Tsuki.
That being said…Kagome had been quiet for a while.
A different usher pulled out a chair for Tsuki to sit in. Once pushed in Tsuki could take in the enormous platter of food on the table. There was a spread of things from fruit, cheeses, meats, and breads. There were three different cups in front of her as well; a cup for wine, a cup for water, and a cup of water. She looked down at the different utensils as well and tried not to be overwhelmed by it.
Sesshomaru sat down across the long ornate table with a document in his hand. He took his cup of wine and sipped at and then looked across the table at her. “Do not wait for this Sesshomaru to eat. Help yourself.” Tsuki chuckled, “You place a lady on the spotlight? Watch her eat? Come on, Lord Sesshomaru, that is cruel even for the stoic lord.” Eyebrow raised, Sesshomaru smirked. He picked up a piece of toast and speared a piece of roast beef onto it. With a little exaggeration he bit into the toast and raised his glass to her. “Now. Eat.” Tsuki smiled and took a bowl of fruit and ate a piece. “Is she well?” Tsuki looked up. He hadn’t moved his eyes from the document he was reading. She sipped at her water. “Quiet today, but fine. She will appear when needed.” “Good.” He put down the document and looked at her. “Sakura.” Tsuki tilted her head at him. “The flower, it is the cherry blossom. Sakura.” Tsuki smiled and took another bite of food. “Are you going to be working today?” “I am not near the office.” “Yet you have enough documents and distractions here to probably create another work space.” She raised an eyebrow at him, “Please, do inform me if your intention is to ignore me entirely during my stay.” He chuckled, “The lady is far needier than expected.” Sesshomaru stood and held out his hand to her. “Come.” “Now where are we going?” “If that human body gets hungry it will be your own undoing.” He took her hand and escorted her down the hallway. The two came to a door down the hallway and Sesshomaru slid it open. There were boxes, crates upon crates, and other oddly shaped items wrapped up and packed in this room. “You have a very dirty closet, Lord Sesshomaru.” “Uninspiring working space,” Sesshomaru hummed, reaching in to turn on a light. “The relic is somewhere in this room.” “That is very specific, Lord Sesshomaru” she laughed miserably, stepping inside the room. “Kagome will probably be pleased with it.” Tsuki’s eyes shifted from red to blue and momentarily Kagome looked at Lord Sesshomaru. She bowed to him and smiled. “Hello, Lord Sesshomaru. I thank you for your hospitality.” The shift in aura was palpable; Kagome was far more guarded than Tsuki was around him. Sesshomaru returned her bow. “This is the main storage room for the historical relics. You may work here all hours of the day, but this Sesshomaru does not require you to stay here. Work at your leisure. If you require assistance, the staff works around the clock as well. Someone will always be within earshot for you.” Kagome looked back into the room, “You are certain it is here?” “This is the only place I would store such things. There is not enough display space for them in the home.” “Things like these would be better suited for a museum,” Kagome scolded, already having found an ornate vase. “Just saying.” Sesshomaru nodded and was pulled away by a staff member telling him there was a phone call. He rolled his eyes and touched Kagome’s shoulder before disappearing down the hallway. Kagome looked back in the room and smiled, “This is going to be fun.” Fun? This is your idea of a good time? “Come on. Tons of artifacts to look at and no one to talk to.” We are not spending the entire trip in here. “I know that. So let me spend the mornings here and you may have the majority of the day on your own. Okay?” Fine. “For the record. I’m hungry. You did not eat enough.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
