23:� Downtime

�� Kagome stretched as she got ready to
get back in the car with Koga.� They were
still trying to enjoy their vacation, but ignoring the huge white elephant in
the room was something that was proving easier said than done.� It was starting to grate on her last
nerve.� They had decided to try to just
enjoy the rest of their vacation after their incident involving
Sesshomaru.�

�� She knew what happened, but she
still wasn�t quite sure what had actually happened.� She knew how her powers felt as they flared,
and her miko powers had really exploded.�
She knew, in retrospect, that would have been something that would
happen without her intention, but she was still stunned as she tried to determine
what her powers had done to Sesshomaru.�
Did she really hurt him?� Would he
come back and try to gain some sort of revenge?�
Was he sane enough to try to stop himself from committing some sort of
massive, heinous crime?� There were many,
many questions for which she did not have the answer, and it was starting to
weigh on her mind as she tried to remain in a good mood.� She was certain that Koga knew that she was
worried though, but if she admitted to being worried, she would also be
admitting that there was a problem.� She
wasn�t ready for that as of yet.

�� She smiled at Koga before letting a
sigh slip out.� �I love you, Koga.�

�� Koga�s eye lit up before he turned
at responded with an enthusiastically sweet, �I love you too.�� He stepped closer to her and kissed her
forehead, wrapping his arms around her.�
�Why don�t we just take a break for tonight and get a room
somewhere?� We were supposed to be
enjoying this trip along with whatever adventure we wanted, but it seems that
we will have to work through everything with Sesshomaru before we can relax
again.�

�� Kagome�s only response was a nod of
agreement before kissing his jaw and turning to get into the car.�

�� Koga closed the car door, sighed and
rolled his head to try to relieve some of the tension in his neck and
shoulders.� He had been waiting for her
to say something, but she hadn�t.� He
knew that all of this had been bothering her for some time now.� It had been a full four days plus a few more
hours since they had left Inu Yasha rather than go back with him.� He knew the events bothered her greatly, but
he hadn�t known what to do about it.� He
had hoped that she would come to him when she was ready, but he was learning
that he might not be as patient when it comes to problems as he thought he might
be.

�� He glanced around and opted to head
toward a small area that was sure to have something.� While he had been paying for their gas, he
had asked the attendant for guidance dealing with their surrounding areas.� Several places had been recommended to him,
so now he just had to decide.�

�� He allowed another sigh before he
slipped into the driver�s seat and began the trek toward a small area that was
fairly close that did offer a few stores, a fairly nice motel/hotel, and a few
other amenities including a nice park that wasn�t so isolated.� He kept sneaking glances of his mate as she
curled up and looked out the window before her entire stance changed.� She shifted her hips, turned her body and
looked straight at him.� He tried to
surreptitiously keep tabs on what she was doing, but it was difficult to do
without getting caught.�

�� He nearly jumped when she shifted
again, and her head rested on his thigh.�
Her hand tucked itself under her head and massage-like squeezed his
thigh before she settled back down.� He
waited to see what, if anything, she was going to do.� She remained silent, but she had obviously
not gone to sleep or anything.� He tried
deciding what he should say.� There was a
lot to talk about, but the hard part was starting that talk.� Should he just approach the biggest problem,
or should he ease into it?� The one thing
he did know was this silence was taking its toll.� He just smiled and slipped his hand down and
tangled his fingers into her hair, rubbing and petting lightly in an attempt to
sooth her and create a solid connection before he said anything.� It would be so much better if she didn�t have
to have any contact with the demon lord.

�� He started scratching her head while
still determining the best way to begin this conversation.� He decided to bring up the possibility of
cutting off all possible contact.� �Why
don�t you just quit your job?� We could
start a family.� Would you like
that?� I have been looking forward to
having cubs of my own.�� He internally
groaned at his verbal diarrhea.� He knew
what he wanted to say, but he could never form that idea into words that he
knew would suit his needs well.� He
chanced a glance at his beauty in his lap and began debating what her
expression was hinting.� If he could
determine her thoughts from that, he could do some damage control.
�� Kagome continued to contemplate what
he had said.� She did like what she was
doing, but how long would she continue to keep her job if she did have a
baby.� A baby!� That was something that she hadn�t really
been ready to contemplate.� Yeah, she
wanted one, but that was something that hadn�t really been solidified in her
current plans.� It was just a distant
goal that she had never given a time limit or place in her life to date.
�Koga, I can�t
quit my job yet.� Besides, I can�t let
that bully just run me off.� That will
never, ever happen.� He can huff and puff
all he wants, but I have had to battle worse.�
I probably have just roused his curiosity, and he wouldn�t be able to
play anymore since demons hide in this time.�
I am sure it is just something�� She cut herself off as that last
vestige of thought left her.� Was she
trying to excuse the deluded demon lord that made life at the hospital
horrendous?� �Yes, I do want a baby one
day, but I want to work for right now until the time feels better.� Let�s just deal with this problem, get
married, get settled, then we can decide what to do from there.� We don�t have to have all of this decided
right now.�
�� Koga didn�t respond.

�� Sesshomaru paced his office as he
thought about the uncomfortable confrontation he had just suffered.� He had just wanted to abduct the wench and be
done with it.� He grinned at the ideal
that she represented.� She was supposed
to be human as in mortal, but she still existed and was young.� She had barely aged.� It was quite an oddity, and he would enjoy unraveling
the puzzle she symbolized.

�� Now, he did have bigger
problems.� He had to distract his hanyou half brother.�
He would have to wait to deal with Kagome once she was back.� He did so hope that would be soon.

I am truly sorry. RL sucks and gets in the way, especially with visits to chemo and then the subsequent funeral, but that is not all that has been going on.

Anyway, I have had two awesome reviewers that reminded me that I did have stories to finish as well as pointed out many incongruencies with my story, so I have been agonizing over this chapter for months. I dedicate this chapter, however short it is, to both Amy and Four Shot Child. Maybe I will get back into my writing habits. ;)
