...Finally, the sound of Annabelle's voice was released, bringing in it her shameful statement:
"Yes". She confessed, her tone chocked, yet audible. "Yes, she is right. I have been with Naraku yesterday, and we..." Her eyes tightly sealed as soon as Inuyasha interrupted her, yelling even louder than before:
"So you are his ally"!
"No!" The woman fiercely shouted. "No I am not an accomplice of his plans!"
"I don't believe in you anymore!" The hanyo showed his claws to her. "How can you say you're not Naraku's ally if you and he..." The rest of his phrase was swallowed by a disgusted grunt. Inuyasha's head shook while his eyes were closed, he did tried not to imagine the two of them entangled, hidden in the woods and ready to devour each other, but he failed, and his anger grew even more.
A tear poured by the corner of her eye, then another, and another. Soon, Annabelle's face was soaked and her body trembling unceasingly because of her sobs.
"I fought against it, but it was stronger than me!" Her orange head lowered.
"You are our enemy then!" Inuyasha sentenced as he assumed an attack posture, even his wounds were still open, weakening him.
"Kill me". On the other hand, Annabelle's gestures were simply to close her eyes and let her arms relaxed, totally vulnerable. "I will not fight back". She bit her lower lip, her every part shuddering while hearing the inuhanyo footsteps approaching.
Kikyo beheld her old love cease his parade ahead the weakened prey and raise those fatal, sharpen claws. His fingers quivered though, and then his hands closed into fists, already lowered by his body's sides. Inuyasha breathed slowly and heavily, his disappointment clear as summer skies. Yet, above all rage, there was some sympathy shinning into those yellow trembling globes. That was Inuyasha at last, someone who didn't stand to see a woman weeping so miserably. So, he passed through her, stopped by her side and stared her visage one last time before leaving that place without a glance back.
Annabelle slowly opened her eyes and looked over every centimeter around. Her friend was already gone, there was only her and that priestess who was mysteriously gazing at her.
"You..." Suddenly Anna's sorrowful semblance assumed a discrete trace of indignation. "Did you have to do it like this?" She wiped her flooded face "They were all I had!"
"So you should have thought about it before letting yourself being seduced". Kikyo reprimanded her. "You allowed this to happen, assume the consequences".
"You have no right to point a finger to me" Annabelle argued back. "Thanks to your help, now Naraku has the jewel almost complete in his hands! You, indeed, have been helping him with his plans by everybody's back. For your sake, Inuyasha almost died last night".
"I have my reasons, I do what I do for a cause higher than you, higher than Inuyasha, even higher than myself" She stolidly answered, her timbre as inalterable as ever. "Since we are here now, why don't we put some things clear between us?" the miko approached.
Annabelle shivered to the bones and gave one step back. Her saliva hardly going down, how dry was her throat.
"There is no need for us to be enemies, girl. As long as you do not stand in my way" Kikyo said "Now, tell me sincerely, what is happening between you and Naraku?" Then she stood by Anna's side, looking into her eyes with such intensity that made her feel undressed.
"Naraku..." Annabelle sighed deeply "He and I... We don't..." How would she ever find words do explain something even she didn't know what it was? "He stole the appearance of the man I was fond of" Wasn't the man she loved? Why wasn't she using the word love anymore? Did she know what it meant still? "It is hard to be in front of him and feel indifferent".
I am lying.
"That is not all. What do you feel for him?" Those pale, delicate fingers touched the foreigner lass' arm.
Anna's mouth sealed, her eyes focused on the grass. Kikyo remained attentive, analyzing her reactions and features. The miko saw her hands constricting under the long sleeves, so she knew that the stranger, outcast woman was silently torturing herself.
"Come" The priestess released Anna's' arm of her touch. "Have a walk with me" Then she began to trade the path.
Annabelle followed in silence.
"I can sense a pure energy burning inside of you" Kikyo said as she was leading their walking. "To me, and certainly to Naraku, you are not an ordinary person. He was right when he said you may be capable to do great things" She looked at Anna, an eye over a shoulder. "If you choose to use your gift in doing goodness, you will be able to help many people, to save many lives and you are aware of it. Yet, a power such as yours will always bring an incalculable burden with it. There will always be those whom will long to take advantage on it, and they will try to dry you out to your last strand of hair..." Her gaze became distant and contemplative.
Annabelle heard her every word very attentively, though she wouldn't dare to look at the priestess' visage.
"That is what Naraku wants, to absorb this precious possession of you, till you have anything left. That is all he knows to do. Do not ever delude yourself believing that creature has any feelings for you, he is just incapable of it. Naraku does not know the real meaning of love, he is obsessed, and the object of his obsession is not you, but me." And then, all of sudden, she stopped her footsteps. Annabelle stood still as well, so the latest Shikon's guardian turned around to gaze her again. "Naraku's human heart vibrates for me, and I don't believe there is any space for you in it. I hope there isn't, not only because it would spoil my plans, but also because it would make you another victim of his wicked intentions" Kikyo came so near that she could see herself reflected inside those afflicted celestial pools. "I wish I could believe that all this goodness in you, which I perceive to be enormous, could bring some light to that troubled soul, even knowing my heart will never allow me to forgive Naraku. However, I am certain that not all purity in the world would be enough to heal him. Naraku is cursed, and he is destined to be it as long as his existence endures. You cannot save him" She held Anna's hands with the same firmness that her eyes were locked onto the blue ones.
Saving him, was that what Annabelle wished for? To change his nature?
An elucidation fell over her like a beam, something has changed within the White Rose first when she saw Naraku's essence with her very eyes, and then when he saved her life. She has been blind for that inner nuance, yet noticed for that miko some time ago. Kikyo was a mature and sensitive woman indeed, and when her life was stolen from her body, she must has been younger than Annabelle. So, the western lass secretly admired her, while her fingers squeezed Kikyo's a bit. Anna made a temporary fortress of herself, ignoring the poundings inside her chest when hearing about Onigumo's maniac desire for Inuyasha's soul mate.
"I am very sorry, from the bottom of my heart, for everything he put you through." Finally Annabelle broke her silence. "You may be right about something inside me made me sympathize with Naraku's condition. You see, I don't believe a person character's is composed only by evilness or goodness. I think every being are much more complex and are above those concepts" She fixated her eyes on the vespertine firmament, some clouds were starting to cover it's beautiful colors, bringing with them the rain's omen. "I've been told that Naraku was born of a fusion between a scorched bandit and a bunch of yokai. Yes, he has been composed by the worst indoles and that is how he came into this world, bringing those putrid memories and feelings within, and not a single experience about good moments and feelings. He never had a family, he had no one but himself. How any human or yokai that lived in such conditions could know to do anything else than causing pain? Virtues sometimes can come from the crib, but they also can be taught".
"It is not up to you assuming this role, you might destroy yourself in the process" Kikyo warned her. "Onigumo knew sympathy through my deeds, and behold how it ended to me. I do not wish same fate to anyone".
In that instant, the priestess had been more vulnerable than ever. Her sorrow was almost palpable. Annabelle longed for give her any comfort she could, there was no time, though. Soon the wind suddenly changed it's direction and got sharpen. Kikyo immediately pulled her bow and an arrow. Anna stood aware, looking to every side.
"Get off the tree, I know you are there!" The sacred miko vociferated.
After a brief chuckle, an elegant female yokai jumped of the high treetop, she spun gracefully in the air till falling on her feet over the earth. Then, she opened her large fan and waved it in front of her face.
"It's her..." Annabelle petrified "Naraku's incarnation"!
"It's Kagura, I have a name". The hanyo's servant snored, evidently bored. "Naraku has sent me to watch your steps". Her crimson gaze fell upon the black-haired maiden. "How boring is just to look and can't do nothing! I would rather kill you both for once..." She had no time to finish her speech, for a purifying arrow was aimed and sent right into her direction. Luckily Kagura has been fast enough to pull the feather off her hair, and fly away in a blow.
"Naraku will know we had this conversation". Kikyo commented while watching the Wind Sorceress fading into grey clouds.
"He will come after me"...
"After us both" the priestess corrected her words. "While Naraku is playing with your feelings, he is stalking me like a crow. Do not ever feel special." Whitish serpents descended from the skies and entangled the delicate miko's body. "Never forget it". She reiterated, and finally her sandals parted from the ground. Kikyo was taken away by her Shinidamachū, and Annabelle found herself lonely, lost into the endless muddy woods.
Where will I go now? She thought, while pressing her moon-shaped pendant in one hand. Such solitude was so tiring, now that she has experienced the joy of having a man to love, then friends to cherish the moments, and she lost it all too fast for her spirit not to break.
Yet, even carrying all that suffering within, this time Annabelle didn't think of ending her misery, everything she did was walk. That was how her new pilgrimage began, wandering around, hoping her steps could pacify the amount of ideas that were confusing her mind.
Every answer was a door opening a new quest. The only conviction Annabelle had at that moment was that she knew anything at all.
To be continued...
XXX
Every answer is a new quest, a quest to non existence, a journey with no end! Epica - Sensorium. (It wasn't intentional, yet the last paragraph of this chapter reminded me this song SO MUCH lol!)
Well, that's it folks! I would love to read what you have to say about Annabelle's concepts about Naraku's nature. Particularly, I believe some of that thoughts fit humanity very well. I really enjoy the reflection on the matter. Our essences are dense, sometimes even incoherent. Wow, a philosophical moment! If there is someone who would like to discuss such subjects, please write your impressions on a comment. I would love to talk about it, to share opinions. S2
So, this is it for now, guys. See ya on the next chapter.
